This is false. Have taken a couple "self-improvement" (that did not go towards a degree) classes at the local college from at least two people who taught them told us that they taught the exact same course, same syllabus, book etc., at a private school for much more money. Made friends with college professors in HS that have said much of the same thing. Universities and private schools tell what you've told us to students to make them believe that they're getting the best bang for their buck, even when they're not. Are autodidacts who enter an apprenticeship any less skilled and capable than someone who took 4 years of classes in order to obtain a degree? Going through four years of college courses proves one is disciplined, which is what employers desire most. Not skill, not intelligence, not resourcefulness. Discipline. I stroke a conversation with someone who had completed something like 24 (or 22, can't really remember how much just that it was a lot.) years of schooling last year. When I asked them how much they remember of it they said something akin to "not much." Then what was the point of it all? to show how dedicated he was to completing the work, of course. He didn't say anything when I mentioned this, but he seemed to nod in assent. He was a professor himself, btw.
