Pretty much in the same boat as you except my hair takes longer to grow. I say have it vaguely slicked back and to the side, I'd take a pic of how I have mine but I'm on the first week of no-poo so it looks like shit.

Pic is hair without product, but I usually just part and comb over with a little pomade for it to stay during the day. Any suggestions for a real/better haircut?

I have a decent taper fade right now, but I'm clueless on how to apply product and style it in a way like pic related, so I let it lay flat. Any tips on how to achieve this? What kind of product do you use? Is your hair thick or fine?
I have very fine hair - if I shampoo it, it falls flat and is very soft, shiny and has no volume. So I don't shampoo and after a few days it goes wherever I push it. You could consider forgoing shampoo.
Otherwise I would dry my hair partially out the shower, rub a bit of wax into fingers, work it through the damp hair, and then blow dry. You could also use a bit of hairspray.

Also, the way my hair falls makes it easy to lay flat even with product. Any tips for getting volume?

Pomade gave my hair a wet/greasy look, and I could feel it in there if I touched it. I find wax gives a feel more like if you dried your hair after swimming in the sea, a dry, puffed up kind of feel.
As for volume, comb it back, then comb it forward so it stands up straight, then comb it back lightly on the top if you get what I'm saying. If you drag the comb through your hair to the roots then it will fall flat, but just push it back so it falls on the body of the hairs behind it
Hard to explain I guess but you gotta practice to find what works for you.
Nobody's hair ever looked great without them standing in front of a mirror for a little or a long while.

It's just a matter of volumes, you won't really know until you actually buzz your hair. I think it will look good, just try to keep it clean and well groomed.

Well anons, I went ahead and buzzed my head for the first time. Did a 2 on top and a 1 on the sides and back. Hell of a time doing a neck line in a double mirror, but I think it looks good. Maintenance will be a breeze.

I like it! Makes me hopeful for the beard as well, I can see it getting longer/fuller and me still having the same hairstyle--and if it doesn't work I can shave it off anyway.

I swear my cheeks don't look as shitty IRL as they do in the pic.

Good god fucking advice pls

Originally just wanted a top-knot but now I want to grow all my hair out. Thing is it looks fucking retarded when the hair on the sides is long enough to stick out ~1 inch but the top is tied up.

I'm thinking about getting it all cut to the length on the sides, and then letting it grow from there. I work in a restaurant so I basically can't have shitty hair or wear a hat all the time like I do to class.

Cut it all and let it grow out evenly or just be patient? Hair is chin length on top

I really like the look of my hair once I'm out of the shower. This isn't the best example but it's sorta patted most of the water out with some coconut oil as well. It dries and goes curly/frizzy. How do I keep hair like this all day?

Aloe vera is also good for hydration. Basically look into hair hydration, hydrating needs to be done more frequently than nourishing (which is what the coconut oil/avocado is for).
