Old tape decks are almost always missing belts. Replace them. Old ones may be present but loose.

Those things only work one way. Go to a flea market and get a couple of a similar era and start butchering them and replacing parts until you get one that works.

I have a tape deck that's missing a screw to maintain the tape head in place. How do I go about finding a properly fitted screw?

Only a handful of companies in the world ever made consumer electronics, everyone else just rebranded. Go to a flea market and get a few of a similar era and start butchering them. You'll find the right screw eventually. Probably on the first try.
