What meterial should i use for the plates, would it be possible to use aluminum foil?

Aluminium foil is likely a good material for this. Copper plates would be more effective but also more costly.

I build one once from aluminium foil, a capacitor and a switch.
The capacitor did charge up, but i never figured out why
