I know I said i'd brb with that hellhound story, but I took a bit longer that expected.

He picked up his ax, canteen, and satchel before heading off into the woods. Pausing to make sure his jacket was packed away in it, Fall was approaching and the afternoon could get a bit chilly. Life as a lumberjack in this region was simple and easy. It was a nice wide U-shaped valley covered in a thick deciduous forest dotted with the occational fur thicket. The carpenter or sawmill operator would go out and mark the trees and the next day he would go out and hack them down. The path he traveled was well worn enough, up the way and usually around halfway up the mountain. Today he had to go a bit off the beaten path, the trees the carpenter wanted grew a bit further into the forest off the trail, and marked the trees every so often with a blue bit of cloth. A few minutes more of walking and soon he began to see the red bits of cloth that marked what trees he needed to fell. A hard day spent kocking a few trees down and the sun began to sink in the sky. He hefted his axe onto his shoulder and began to make the trek back to town. He wanted to get back well before dark; this place was wonderful during the day, but after dark strange noises were heard coming from the forest and the rumors flowed like mead in the inn. It didn't help that those brave, or foolish enough to wander out during the hours of darkness were never heard from again.

Blue string, heading the right way. The sun was halfway down when he came upon a very familiar looking tree he had felled not too long ago. This, this can't be right. He followed the strings, and counted how many he picked up while trekking home and all except one were accounted for. Right, Just try and get a bearing off this tree and head in what is hopefully the right direction. His pace this time around had quickened slightly, the sun sinking further and further in the sky. Once again he came upon the same log as the first time. Panic started to gnaw at him as he looked up to see the sun dip behind the top of the mountains, signaling the twilight hours had arrived. A cool breeze suddenly picked up and blew what sounded like faint laughter through the trees. Figuring he'd test his luck again he set off once again throught the woods, this time at a light jog. He must have taken a wrong turn becaue he wound up in a small clearing. He stopped and looked around, pondering wich way to go from there when a strong but feminine voice called out from the trees.
"No need to smell so afraid"

He whirled around to face the direction he figured it came from. But it was useless as it called out to him again, this time from a different direciton.
"Then again, its getting dark. Don't want those ferocious forrest beasts to get you, hmm?"
He hefted his axe into his hands and held it at the ready; straining to see or hear anything that could help him identify where the voice was coming from. "Show yourself demon" he yelled "Least you're afraid of being cast back into the pits of hell"
That didn't seem to phase her and a light giggle echoed around the trees.
"I'm just saking in my fur, O brave, lost, pitiful soul. I guess You deserve to know who's responsible for all this anyways"
She emerged from the treeline, as if materializing from nothing. He flinched a little, not expecting something of her magnitude. A jet black hellhound was walking towards him with an almost arrogant swagger, she was about a head taller than he was with a soft yellow-orange flame emitting from the corner of her eyes. Her toned body and sharp look in her eye no dobt molded by years surviving in the forest. His expression hardened when he saw that she was fiddling with a small piece of blue cloth between her digits. She grinned when she noticed his sour expression.
"Oh, were these yours?" she lifted the piece up before it turned to ash "It would be a shame if something" she blew the ashes away and were carried off with the breeze "Tampered with it" She started to casually walk towards him again, giving him a quick look ever before staring right back into his eyes. He took a small step back, planting a foot down and readied to strike.

"Oh, how cute, you're armed." she remarked as if just noticing he was holding an axe.
"Well if it makes you feel better, I'll give you a few minutes head start"
He remained still as she resumed walking towards him. When she got in range, he swung. She expertly doged it and snatched it from his hand, more annoyed than anything. Axe in one hand she picked up up by his shirt, he grabbed her paws to keep it from ripping. She brought him in close
"I said, I'll give you a head start" before giving him a light toss back. He got up and began a light run towards the edge of the clearing.
"And take your toy with you too!" she yelled, throwing the axe so that it was embedded into a nearby tree.

He ran throught the trees, zigzagging around and running along logs. Trying to throw his scent off, he even went along a stream bed for awhile. He got to a small cliffface and heard a distant howling, he figured it was her way of signaling she was coming for him. This spurred a second wind in him. He couldn't go straight up it with one hand, he had to retain his axe, it was too useful of a tool to just throw away now. An idea came to him, he took one last pull from his canteen before yanking off the straps. He then tied the axe around his shoulders and he began to make his way up the cliff. It was slow going and he heard a crashing beneith him letting him know she had arrived. What suprised him most though was a huff and a tugging at his satchel. She had jumped after him, her claws barely sinking into his satchel as it hung benieth him. Her sharp claws and weight meant it simply tore away instead of bringing him down with it. It was enough motivation for him to scramble up the rest of the way. Breathing heavily he looked down to see her rip the rest of his bag to shreds, pull his jacket out and proceed to roll around in the grass with it while playfully growling. Having finished entertaining herself she laid out on the ground and propped her head up with an arm, looking up to him, jacket drapped across her midsection.
"You scent is absolutely wonderful, don't worry now, I'll find a way up there in no time"

He took that as a warning to keep on going, so he untied his axe and pushed on into the forest. At the top there was at least some sunlight still hitting up here so darkness wouldn't be an issue. There was another rocky outcrop, this time with a narrow path between them. He could easily fit down it, but she might be able to as well. He got an idea, approaching a nearby tree he began to hack at it making sure to adjust the cuts so it would where he wanted. Another howl rang out, she must have reached the top of that cliff, already. He cut more frantically and finally the tree came crashing down right over the entrance to the path. He began to sqeeze his way through when he saw her bounding through the trees towards him. He sucked in a bit and was able to force his way through, landing roughly on the sandy ground and scrambling to get clear of the paw that inevitably came swiping at him. He turned around to see it scratch at the ground a few times before see peered through the gap.
"I've gotta hand it to you, I honestly didn't think you'd last this long" he could hear her drag her claws down the tree.
"you keep this up and I might just get annoyed" she grinned. He narrowed his eyes at her, "Then I plan to keep going as long as i'm alive" She hummed and shot him a pleased look before snapping her jaws playfully at him.

There were no other barriers in sight, no other path to slip down to avoid her now, he could hear her gaining on him. The crashing of the underbrush, the rough grunting as she drew breath, it would be no time now until she caught up with him. He knew she was coming up behind him, so he swung hard with the axe; putting his entire body into the motion. She caught it before it hit the mark, grabbing just below the metal head. She pulled it towards her body a bit, making him stumble a bit since the swing left him off balance slightly. Her smile broad and her eyes filled with a lustful hunger as a bit of yellow-orange flame trailed off the corners.
"Its been real fun, but I think playtime's over"
A further testament to her strength, she snapped the axe handle right below the head turning the weapon into nothing more than a stick. Thinking fast, he brought the bottom of the handle up into a huge blow right into her abdoman. It took her off guard, a small breath forcing its way out, her body hunching over a bit, and her eyes snapping open with suprise. He brought the now broken end back down across the side of her head causing her to flop to the forest floor. He ran for it, and chanced a look back to see the very image of firery, tourturous death rise to all fours. The playful, arrogant smirk erased and in its place a murderous snarl of rage accentuated by deep red flames pouring from the corner of her eyes. His eyes met hers for only a fraction of a second, before he tore his look away least he become paralyzed with fear from those bottomless pits of fury.

It wasn't a howl this time, it was a roar. A deep guttural roar that drove needles of fear down to his very bones. He heard an explosion and could feel a wave of hot air and hastily threw himself behind a tree. A wave of fire and splintered wood flew by, and he felt a sharp pain shoot through his leg. A huge splinter of tree that had exploded closer to the epicenter of the blast gave him a deep gash. Looking down at it, a bit of blood began to seep out, and he quickly put his hand over it and used the other one to clutch the axe handle like a cane. He began to limp away as quickly as he could, peering back to see a dark figure standing amoung a shallow crater surrounded by a raging inferno. He had to keep moving. She merely watched him hobble away through the red mist in her eyes, the smell of his blood unmistakable. It was only a matter of time at this point.

It was almost dark, the cerulean and violet of the sky deepening into a navy blue. He was tired, sore, brused and blooded, but still he pushed on. The breeze caused him to shiver, or was it the slow seeping wound which had began to soak down his pant leg. He reached a small dirt drop off, he tried to gingerly ease himself down it sideways step by step but the dirt gave out and his foot slipped. Giving a small shout he slid down the rest of the way before a hard landing made him tumble onto his chest. Pain surged throught his leg and he saw flashing lights as conciousness threatened to leave him. He didn't know how long he writhed there in pain but eventually he crawled foreward a bit before shakily getting to his feet. He staggered on, the pain and blood loss threatening to bring him back down. He would have kept going if not for another cliff face standing before him. He craned his neck up to see the top, and heaved a sigh of defeat. It was only a moment before he heard heavy footsteps behind him and saw the light dancing along the rocks. He slowly turned to face her and all her blazing glory.
"Ready to give up" she asked, the angry scowl still firmly planted on her face
"Not. dead. yet" He heaved. If he was going out he would go out swinging. Raising both hands up as if to box he began to move as fast as he could at hear, giving the best war cry he could. And it all went black.
She watched him 'charge' her as best as he could and tried not to smirk, he had a lot of pluck. But that quickly melted to concern as she saw consciousness leave him as he dropped to his knees.

He didn't remember much after he passed out that night, just faint and fleeting memories and sensations. That demon, or Erika as she had told him, had taken him to her home and tended to his wounds. Her house was a strange one, a cave whose entrance had been covered with appeared to be part of a normal house. The interior however was wonderfully open and well decorated, the cave allowing the living space to reach back quite a ways. He was suprised and almost taken aback at her gentleness and generocity, even describing how she carried him after he passed out and made sure his leg stopped bleeding. That was almost a week ago, and every day he felt the strength returning. It was also on this day that he decided he would head out back for the village, he would be sure to bring her back something that would make up for her kindness. Its just he hadn't seen her all day, and it was almost midday, oh well. He donned what remained of the rest of his clothes and opened the door. He turned around and gave the cozy little home one last look, kind of sad he didn't see her before heading out. Just then two big arms wrapped around him, pinning his arms to his side and pulling him into a warm and fuzzy body.

"Where do you think you're going big boy?" A familiar female voice calmly asked of him.
It was a cozy embrace, but her strength and size still make him feel a bit...off?
"Just uh, going back to the village to get you something to show my thanks" He hoped that would be good enough for her to let him go. She just hummed a bit and lowerd her head so she was right beside his ear.
"I know a better way you can... repay me" She whispered, giving his ear a light nibble. His face burned, he knew exactly what she meant but part of him perhaps didn't find it all disagreeable, and so he said nothing and didn't struggle. She then lifted him up a bit and carried him back through the door, closing it with her hind paw.
