The biggest problem is that he refuses to let anyone else take credit for doing anything. He has to be the one who controls Spawn, but unfortunately, McFarlane is a bad writer. His guardians is better than Bendis' and he certainly seems to be gearing up to something. As for emulating the movies, it seems to be straying away from them as much as editorial will allow. I think he has also managed to get the characters closer to their original interpretation which is nice.

I think the biggest problem with Marvel at the moment goes a bit beyond their politics, as they have always been quite liberal (Although I won't deny it is a bit of a tone off for some books). It's the fact that the books don't really have an identity of their own any more. Originally, every book had a theme and an idea both connected to the heroes and the villains.
While some like Alan Moore and Claremont reimagined certain heroes, there was always a limit on the stories as well as a connection, thematically between the old books and the re-imagined ones, beyond the cast of characters. Now it just seems that books are trying to tell all the stories without worrying how it fits in with the character's established history and themes.

The Ultimates were good and I am definitely buying the trades, same with USAvengersAlong with Royals and Black Bolt. Duggan's work is proving to be good. Renew your vows proves to be the best Spidey book. Hulk and Gwenpool are fun books, for the most part. It's just the X and Bendis books which are shit. Gold is a retread of old stuff where Kitty proves that she is a shit teacher and ineffective leader. Gen X is just wasted potential. Blue is just Marvel desperately trying to get us liking the O5 and failing as we want our New Mutants Academy of X Kids and Gen X kids back. Astonishing is... well okay so far, but it is Soule. Weapon X I don't know about and I refuse to support Land.
Cable has been good so far though.

I like them growing up but I don't like the way she did it. Claremont did it and did it better. Simonson had to turn Dani and Illyana into boy crazy teens rather than picking up where Claremont left them. Maybe that's because she was writing from her own experiences as a teenager. Illyana should never be shown to be going gaga over some random boy unless you also show her doing it because she is struggling to fit in with the "normal" kids that aren't Hell Lords

See, I don't mind now that they've grown up that they are taking superhero roles as that is what New Mutants was all about. These kids becoming heroes.
It's why I loved New X-Men as well. Because they felt like kids. Like their predecessors they were trying to find their place in the world. However, there was more peril to their situation. Rater than being like the WATXM kids who just went 'meh' to that stuff, those kids were scared. They had no idea what to do and it seemed like the people they turned to once had gone away.
It felt likemy bisexual experiences as ateenager. Those kids had no idea what to do and they seemed to in a world that hated the idea of them with no one they could really turn to.

That's a screwy book, they really messed up Emma Frost in it and her characterization never recovered.
But the dark turns with the tragic deaths during the attack on the school and Wither's turn to villainy really spice things up compared to the early lighthearted stuff you've read so far.
They really go through Hell in those later stories.
And watch out for Rockslide, he's responsible for Carol Danver's costume change. The bastard.
