We are running our 4th hyw challenge! Now you have until the end of the month to do so, be an anonymous and do 1 page, 2 pages or 3 pages of comic! Check for other changes in the pic!

>THEME: Magic

>GENRE: (choose one to play around alongside the theme!)
>Lava
>Urban Fantasy
>Inventors

>DEADLINE: August 31

Remember that you can play with the theme as you see fit, we want to see how creative you can get!

Maybe I should specify that the end of the month bit means that's when the biweekly deadline ends, not that the challenges are monthly. Please understand.

Thanks. I'm not really sure how I should change the hands honestly. I just tried to make them look slender and bony. And yeah, that hose is like a rubber covering for the joints. I'm thinking the higher end ones will have propulsion on the back so you have the precise front limbs and then the cybernetic legs are re-purposed as power lifter back arms.

Their anatomy in general is inspired by this model kit which has a similar "transformation" function involved where the legs become arms when it flies.
>>
>>94730606
although if we did them every midmonth and endmonth it might be easier to remember and keep straight
>>
Does anyone here draw their comic by hand and then scan it?
>>
>>94730683
>Bony
they look more like what I would expect a living plant to have, leaflike fingers that form together into a slender blossom.. or something out of dr seuss. if you want them bony, maybe give them knobby knuckle joints. Personally I would imagine the galaxy's most dextrous hands to be something like a gecko's paws except each thick round grippy pad tip has a small pointy tip at the end for finer manipulation. I would also imagine a thumb on each side of the hand for a symmetrical grip and two-sided joystick action
also I love me some robots whose legs become arms. model kits are the best inspiration
>>
>>94730740
if it's any consolation, when they're opened up their hands are radially symmetrical so it is kind of like a flower except each petal is a thumb.

Page came out kind of meh.

Trying to keep the story in small 12-page sections to avoid going off on long tangents. This is the end of a section. There's sort of two possible directions for the next section.

One is to move forward with her narrative, and she finds out about her father. The other option is his narrative, and him moving forward with the item she stole. I -think- it'll probably be his narrative first, and then hers after that. I have a few days to decide which.

I think maybe I should have had a panel with her handing him the thing she stole. Here it just shows her reaching into her bag, then he has it in later panels.

Weird question, but does anyone have some ideas for office themed super powers? I'm trying to come up with a cool super hero comic, where the main characters works in an office or some kind of newspaper publisher like the daily bugle. And he gets some kind of weird office based super powers. I was thinking something like whatever he writes comes to life could be cool.

Something with fixing a printer, that would be godlike in the office. You should watch office space not just couse it's about a dude and his life being part of an office but it's also a very entertaining movie.

Only get to work on this on the weekends, but I'm enjoying thinking about how different intelligent races would operate in the same world together.

I feel like the xenophobia we see in our world would actually end up uniting humanity against non-humans.

Also that Humanity's defining trait may be the unwillingness to just settle down and inhabit a niche in the world, constantly wanting to expand and change new lands to suit their needs.

I don't like the idea that any intelligent race would be "all good" or "all evil"- but I can definitely see massive culture clash.

It's Friday, so Capeworld comics has another comic-this time with a bonus text story explaining some of the lore and backstory behind the "Metal Animals" world of B-7-O.

If you voted in the last /hyw/ challenge the comic will look familiar but the text story is entirely new, and I deeply appreciate any feedback and comments anyone can give on it.

Why wouldn't I want an editor?
>>
>>94730567
We're going to be entering this one as well.

Does anyone like the mahou shojo genre? We're doing a take on this where the world's first magical girl (called Magical Girl) grows up and becomes Magical Woman-one of Japan's strongest superhumans. When she's not being Japan's Dr. Strange she teaches and protects young magical girls.

Basically "what if Sally the Witch/Megu-Chan grew up and had to deal with the modern breed of "post-modern" dysfunctional magic girls as seen in Madokka and Yuki Yunna is a Hero."

The three page comic won't be that dark, but that's the direction I want to steer the character.

What do you think thread?
>>
>>94737617
I myself am a fan of magical girls and like the concept of there being an elder roping them in rather than something like kyuubei.
>>
>>94737274
>that art. giant head guys
Love it.
>uniting humanity against non-humans
really? you think that?
>>
>>94737742

Yeah- I think humans need to feel like they have a "us" and a "them". And of course in any group of "us" there will be infighting. But if the difference between you and another human is skin color, and the difference between you and a non-human is that they are 10 ft tall, 600 lbs, and can chew rocks- you may see the non-human as the "them" pretty easily.
>>
>>94737845
yeah but we're bound to love some of them
Outlaw Star had the best alien layout, and explained "the Silgrians seem almost TOO friendly"
>>
>>94737652
That's basically the idea. It's almost like Kingdom Come for magical girls except instead of the old heroes having to fight to get the new heroes under control the old heroes have to save them from cosmic predators seeking to stamp out hope.

>>94737845
>>94737845
I don't know. It seems to me that in the absence of a "reason" to hate a group human races tend to hate their own far more than another group.

The Japanese tend to hate Koreans and Chinese more than anyone. The British tend to hate the Irish and French more than anyone. The different states and subcultures in the US hate each other

The US largely didn't give a shit about Japan until Pearl Harbor. People in Europe didn't give a shit about the Mid-East until the migrant crisis.

Humans aren't really going to care about what a 10 ft tall giant does with his spare time unless they start causing trouble and give them a reason to hate.

And with there being so many different kinds of non-humans it's likely humans are only going to hate certain kinds.

It's something that's always bothered me about X-men. Realistically no one is going to lump a group as diverse as mutants together. No one is going to be terrified of people like Cyclops or Colossus whose powers essentially mean they're living artillery pieces. EVERYONE is going to be terrified of Jean Gray and Professor Xavier because our social structures disintegrate when someone can wipe your mind and make you forget they did it.
>>
>>94738207
oh absolutely! There are of course humans and non-humans that can and do get along. Especially when the non-human doesn't seem threatening, or when there is commerce involved.

Goblins in this world are nomadic and constantly scavenging. They tend to find a lot of interesting items, and will happily barter with humans.

However another underlying element in this world is that humans can only use magic when utilizing the proper medium. The best medium to use is harvested organic parts from creatures with inherent magic in them.

Unfortunately for non-humanoids, almost all of them have inherent magic, and so to make a glyph of speed, or a wand you'll need something like a goblin bone, or orc blood, or dragon tooth, and etc.

And thanks to some breakthroughs in magic (and a few other background things going on) humanity is going through a magical (militaristic) renaissance.
>>
>>94738207
That's my thoughts as well. Think aliens in Star Trek. No one there hates "aliens" in general. They hate certain types of aliens. The reason humans dominate the Federation is because they're smart enough not to piss other races off.
>>
>>94738283
I agree- right now things have been pushed into a fever pitch thanks to a combination of humans attempting to colonize a new continent (new as in they only were able to access it a few hundred years ago), and the recent discovery of how to work very potent magic through the use of non-human essences.

(to clarify, humans have known how to work magic for a long time now, but it was all "unstructured" magic. Only usable in small amounts, or else it became too dangerous. It was the discovery of how to employ non-human essences to create "structured" magic.)
>>
>>94738283
The worst thing in the world isn't someone totally alien, you can forgive that. It's someone who's ALMOST right, but fucking it up. For one thing, you see that others outside your group(s) will start confusing you with them.

Would a four person cast for a horror story work well?
Some of the main cast is going to die, but I feel like leaving the main cast at only 3 people as early as I want one of the characters to die won't work out very well.

I also want the entire main cast to watch another person die from the threat in the comic just to establish it as a threat, but every time I try and think of a character to put in there as a jobber it feels kind of forced.

>>
>>94744627
A dog getting killed is what alerts the MC to the threat initially, but the rest of the characters enter the story one by one as time goes on.

The nature of the threat itself is something that's very easy to dismiss, and the personality of some of the cast members would more than likely leave them skeptical about it, so that's why I'm kind of at a loss here. Basically, all they have to go off is a somewhat mentally unstable dude telling them that there's something that will kill them.
>>
>>94743746
>>94736016
Its ac120 on tumblr, by the way.

That description is a good place to start. Have you decided on what an alchemist does in your story? Are they like potion mixers? Poisoners? Is your character traveling around? If so , what type of stuff does she do while she is traveling and and what kind of stuff does she need to carry to do them? Is she traveling in a cold or hot region? Does she wear ethnic type clothing and what kind of personal fashion sense does she have?

>>94737617
I am working on a magical girl comic, although the main character doesn't really view magical girl-ing as a good thing and actively discouraging up-n-comers to participate in something like that. She sees it as something more akin to child soldiering. Depending on which faction the girls join, there could be dire consequences.

Not that anon but maybe it's the zombie thing? Althought that's a bit of a stretch.

In the PSP game which has some extra routes written by the same creator of the show there is a route where one of the girls gets her soul gem (with her literal soul) too far away from her body too long, so the body becomes a corpse and decompose appropiately until they get the gem soul back to her. Thing is, the decomposition stays the same.

To be fair I like Madoka but damn if people overrated it too much on the whole "deconstruction of magical girls!" thing. Now anything that isn't just pink and cheerful is a Madoka wannabe.

i'd rather see the reconstruction of magical girls really. maybe going back to their 60s sitcom roots and including more go nagai kind of shit just to keep it peppery

>>94745537
Part of my Magical Woman series is a reconstruction When she's not saving young magical girls from being prayed on by cosmic hope-eaters she's teaching them and caring for them like a surrogate mother.

The tone of the story is generally comfy. The three page comic we're entering for the latest challenge is about her taking on a yokai wolf girl as a student and how shocked the wolf princess is at seeing that the mighty Empress of Croatoan that saved her parents and the entire Makai world...is now just an old lady tending her garden like a commoner.

>>94745758
What was this?
>>
>>94745344
>>94745108

Madoka had a "lose your humanity get turned into a monster" thing for its magical girls. And every magical girl was also a lich on the side.

I do like how your webcomic looks. Do you have anymore?

>>94745415
My interest in Madoka is in the shape of Enron stocks. Once I suspended my disbelief for why no one got an adult and why no one ever really got creative with their wishes I enjoyed it mostly for how cool the witches were. My interest peaked at the lich reveal because I thought they were going to do something interesting with it.

Then it got to muh time travel. And muh heat death. And I didn't even bother watching the last two episodes and according to the wiki I dodged a bullet there.

>Deconstruction

I never got why people attach this to Madoka. It doesn't deconstruct anything because it doesn't actually confront the logical extremes of its genre's conventions and tropes like so say Watchmen did for superheros or Paranoia Agent with several escapist anime genres.

It was just dark and violent and dark and violent doesn't actually make a deconstruction.
>>
>>94745887
>What was this?
Magical Princess Minky Momo (or Gigi if your country is European or Latinamerican). It was a magical girl show from the 80s that was kind of like the grandmother of the "Star vs" cartoon.

The truck bit was because at some point in production the toy company that was their sponsor pulled their support, so the guys on the show made a toy delivery truck kill her at the end of the first season. She reincarnated into an actual Earth human girl so it's fine. Kinda.
>>
>>94746051
People think it is a deconstruction just because it became grim and dark and the magical girls meet dark ends. Most of this people forgot -or didn't know- that pretty much a lot of old school magical girl anime did this already. Sailor Moon had their cast killed a lot and the villains did a lot of deep shit, for one. But of course most of the people that say Madoka is a deconstruction only watched series that were really deep on the sugar side of the genre.
>>
>>94745758
It was so weird when MLaaTR randomly namedropped that anime and made up a gibberish song about it
>>
>>94746156
Yeah come to think of it didn't like all the Sailor Scouts die and come back to life with no memories after the first season?

An actual magical girl deconstruction would explore stuff like the constant duels and contests between magical girls to decide who is worthy of being the queen/heir of X (Magical Meg-Chan, Cardcaptor Sakura, Sugar Sugar Rune) and what kind of society that actually implies, the secret keeping from adults and parents and what a nightmare that would be from the parents' perspectives, the liberal use of memory erasure (Sally the Witch, Sailor Moon), stuff like that.
>>
>>94746156
>>94746051
I would say that as much it deconstructed the "magical sidekick/the choser of the one" character but I can't even say it did it 100%. I mean Kyubey sure didn't tell the girls the whole truth but he was still working technically for a greater good, and other shows were doing this thing already even if they weren't magical girl shows (Bokurano for example has this going on).
>>
>>94746156
The difference, as I see it, is that it's fucking edgy and cliche contrarianism to be like "oh being a magical girl SEEMS all sunshine and smiles but really it's a horrible thing that would scar you!!!" when.. nobody needs that in their superhero fantasy. Obviously that's what makes a hero special, that they can deal with it (or learn how) and it's not some fucking scarring vietnam-ass thing. It's doing the right thing with the powers you have because you're special or somejunk. but then they attack that like OHH NOBODY IS A HERO THERE'S NO GOOD AND EVIL BUUBUUBUU
>>
>>94745887
Man, I feel like that's a lot for a 3 pager.

>>94745256 >>94745415

Well, depending on how you break down the way magic works in difference fictions, it might not be too much of a stretch, but only in generality in my opinion. Although I have never gotten comment that my comic feels like madoka before. I suppose it might be inevitable considering how pervasive its effect on the genre in the last few years.

The girls will not turn into literal zombies in my story, they will lose their own "will" and become slave to whoever provide them the correct mana. The weaker ones just cast aside. It becomes sort of a problem to the civil authorities where they suddenly have a small influx of comatose young girl with no detectable medical problem with their body. What will save them is the bond they have with their family and friends, and the share humanity that arose from that. I haven't decided on precise form to that end but its the basic gist of it.
>>94746051
I see, I think that's a fair comparison. Although I want to be kinder to my character than what I understand Madoka did to theirs. Although in general I wanted more Nanoha than Madoka in my story.

Those are some real sweet designs, especially the face-giant

>I feel like the xenophobia we see in our world would actually end up uniting humanity against non-humans

Oh man, fantasy-race relations is one of my favorite parts in world building; there's just so many examples one could think of where either humanity from across nations would band together against a single (or multiple) groups or for historical reason you have Human group A working with Races X, Y, and Z to fights against Human Group B.
I mean, would a Fantasy-European be more likely to relate to a fairy that looks must like them but fairer, or to a Fantasy-Mongol? Depending on your world's history, you could justify both!
Though really, I tend to like the trope o humans dominating over all the other declining races.
>>

>Greater Good

>"Hey guys we're a few millennia away from heat death but we've found this awesome technology that converts emotional instability into raw energy (what). Let's trap a tiny population of female children of this alien race over here in a series of clandestine and horribly convoluted deathbattles because little girls produce the most emotions (what). We will gradually through the millenia to come save up enough energy to survive heat death."

No one sane could possibly think this was for the "greater good". Even at a purely "lets exploit the humans for emotional resources" level their plan was horribly stupid.

They had the technology to turn emotions into raw energy and grant perpetual time travel and godhood on a wish and THIS was the best plan they could come up with for beating heat death.

What the hell was plan B? Like when the alien cats all sat around and planned out ways to beat Heat Death what were the plans that didn't wash out?

Grant Morrison actually touched on the decay of the hero in pop culture from someone who saved people, to someone who struggled to save people, to someone that failed to save people, then to someone that didn't give a shit if he saved anyone.

Just saw this response.

I'll try to go down it like a question list then.

>Have you decided on what an alchemist does in your story? Are they like potion mixers? Poisoners?
The title of alchemist is very broad, and like wizards there are different uses for their works, such as literally bottling spells, making medicine, transmutation or just straight up explosives via chemical reactions.
The new hot popular thing for them now is actually finding out what this mysterious new blight is on the land and what they can do with it. Many of them have altruistic intentions while others have other (more harmful things) in mind.

> Is your character traveling around? If so , what type of stuff does she do while she is traveling and and what kind of stuff does she need to carry to do them?

She's been doing some light traveling (IE She goes from her home wizard tower to a town- not too much like regular exploring at the moment.)
If she is out and about, she would have her chemistry vials and some prepared firebombs with her. She's also a minor wizard but isn't the best at it.
In the early parts of the story she's been collecting samples around a small town and lost all the research she had obtained + her memories of it. So she's just trying to target
research laboratories to stay on the safe side,

>Is she traveling in a cold or hot region? Does she wear ethnic type clothing and what kind of personal fashion sense does she have?

She hails from a place that borders the dunes/desert. Maybe some grassy steppes. It's pretty hot in the sandy area, but her master's tower is by the sea.
I guess I'm pulling turkic/central asia traditional looks but the weather doesn't bother her too much.

Right. I should also mention she's a homunculus, race wise.
>>
>>94746466
It is interesting how at some point you have to acknowledge that the sort-of-human-looking fantasy races look... rather like the humans in their area.. and that kind of stops making sense if it's genuinely the case and not just because local artists drew them that way.
I gave it some consideration once when drawing a lot of half human things.. if people in europe say some critter with a human head is from mongolia, but then depict it with a rather caucasian-looking face, shouldn't I mongol it up a tad when I draw one?
>>
>>94745108

That's her name and it's my current artist name

She's not a preachy atheist know-it-all scientist like all I've seen
She's a tomboy that had a thing for math and science, but instead of focusing her career to science, she does it as a hobby and sports teacher is her main job. She does this to avoid being locked up in her lab/house all day and keep a balance in her emotional state, since she knows she'll start to lose her sensitivity sanity if she aislates from society too long.
Also for that reason iswhy she lets her roomate to stay without charging her for rent.

Well, I was just suggesting things to think about. Maybe she can have something that carries spell bottles, think about how those things can be attached to belts for easy access. Are they single use or that they will be salvaged after use. How are they used?

Even for day trips she still should pack something, so maybe she can have some sort of backpack? She is collecting samples, depending on the kind of samples she is collecting, she might need to have some sort tool or kit to do so, and containers? Does she put them in some sort of back pack? Fanny packs? Does she bring lunch? Does she buy food in town while she is out and about? Does she have a coin purse? What does that look like and how are these thing attached to her? Does she have to conceal things she is carry or certain aspect about her? Does she wears different things on different days? what components of her outfit might change from day to day? So many things one can think about when deigning a character, just pick things that interests you.

>>94748300
Yeah, and thanks, although you are not missing out on much so far.
>>
>>94752046
I've been pretty keen on giving her a backpack, since they're less obstructive to arms so she can still gesture and do stuff with it on. The questions help a lot though. I did consider maybe putting the other outfits I have thrown on her into the wardrobe of other outfits she wears on different days, since they don't have to go away completely.

>>
How much referencing/interconnecting old shit is too much?

So I want to draw pieces of the Blue Oyster Cult "Soft Doctrines of Imaginos" lyrical cycle, including the Four Winds Bar, Instruments of Time, and Desdinova/Imaginos himself as recurring plot-points. I figure one or two left-handed mentions is one thing, but to have plotlines revolving around them seems like it would be too much.
I also want to include, as a minor supporting character, an aged version of India McCray from Michael McDowell's "The Elementals". She's never mentioned by her surname, but unmistakably the same character. Toss in a few Dark Tower references too.

Is there a resource you can all point me towards so I can figure out how much I can get away with before I get sued? How much reference can I get away with before it just becomes Fan-fiction in your eyes?

Those anons are going to work together for a month or two before realizing that they are estranged childhood friends, then a weird love triangle with develop with a coworker or a publisher and there will be some climactic clearing-the-air scene in a snowy city plaza on Christmas.

This is cute. I want this to work out.

This won't work out. They are two neckbeards who prefer talking to walking. They will maintain contact for a while before one party loses motivation faster than the other, and inevitably drops off. No real bonds will be made, just another moment to be buried beneath the mountain of mundane moments in these losers' lives. There will be now snowy city plaza, only dark solitary rooms with trash bags full of frozen dinners and instant ramen.

That's a good idea. Make all the crazy space stuff seem more mundane and humble.

>>94754671
It's a sci-fi adventure comedy done in a "Quest" style which is why all the resources are being done in a modular reusable fashion.

The setting is a play on the sci-fi trope where everyone is divided between two major factions (one red, one blue usually), except in here there's a tiny faction in between the two that survives off the perpetual stalemate between the two larger ones. They lack any kind of home planet and are referred to as the "Vegabond". People within the Vegabond are constantly helping and sabotaging each of the larger factions to perpetuate their equal power and balance so neither one of them assimilates the universe.

The story follows 4 noobs who recently left these 2 giant extremist factions for different reasons to join the vegabond. Through unfortunate circumstance they all are forced to share a small ship after their initiation goes awry and the comic focuses on them learning to put away their inhibitions and prejudices they've cultivated from their their original factions and learn to understand eachother and become more balanced as individuals just as they are trying to balance out the universe itself.

Throughout the comic they go on various commission jobs by the different factions that gradually get more complicated and they come to find out most of the problems they've been solving for people are connected to a larger harrowing conspiracy.

The audience commands will be given to the characters via a glitchy guidance AI and all the dialogue will be displayed via an alien translation device they get near the beginning. The plot is more or less planned out as well as lots of key scenes but the audience will still direct it pretty heavily.

Depends on the tone of the project. I would avoid going for a one word title unless that word is made up, and your title should tell the audience something about the subject matter while still staying concise. I named my comic "Vegabond" because it's a pun on the words vega (star) and vAgabond (homeless) already from that title you could probably guess it's at least somewhat comedic and is about space nomads so all the bases are covered while staying short and catchy.

For my more click baity youtube series I chose the name "Forgotten Gaming" because it's enticing, gives you an idea of the subject matter (really obscure video games) and is still short and catchy. If you can't picture the name of your project on a t-shirt you should change it.

>Then I took a gamble and bought a screened tablet for $300 and it was dramatically easier, best purchase of my life.
Oh shit, my birthday's next month so maybe I should splurge then. I just got a shitty monoprice one since I have a habit of not following through, but I've been drawing for more than a few months now so I think I may end up actually sticking with it this time. Especially if I have a large purchase to guilt me into using.

Is the difference really that noticeable? I don't think I can justify four figures on an actual drawing screen tablet, but I spent about 500 bucks on amiami last month, so I can live with a few hundred dollars for a good tablet if there's a big difference.

The tablet I got for $300 was a parblo coast10 when they very first came out last year. Cheapest screened tablet you can get. Since mine was part of their first shipment it had some bugs after using it for 6 months but they replaced it for free in under a week and haven't had even slight issues with it since. At the risk of coming off as a shill I'd really recommend it for digital artists that don't have much money.

>Is the difference really that noticeable?

I actually gave up with my screenless tablet and just started tracing pencil sketches with the line tool in paint.net for a while. This drawing on the right from only one year ago was made using that method. The one on the left is after one year of using the tablet regularly and getting critique by these threads.

It's just hard to get excited about an idea that's not mine so I'd want to work with a writer from the very beginning through to the final script and the last few times I've tried to collaborate, the writer ended up ghosting during early script writing. At the same time, I really just want to get something into the world. Whether the writing's shit or not I know the art will at least be half decent and I can put my name on it lol. Also it's tough to just find someone who has experience writing comics and has nothing to do.
>>
>>94761924
Hm, my other idea would be simply commissioning a script or something. So it's still your story and you don't have another person to worry about during the process. Might even be kind of a neat gimmick if you commissioned a different writer for each segment. Most webcomics tend to be done by a single creative team throughout, so it'd make for something a little different.

How do you make an immature character likable?
>>
>>94763775
Just be careful, you could potentially write yourself into a corner or be forced to retconn your story and both of those are some of the worst things you can do in a story.

>>94763786
Let them learn and grow. Just because they start immature and naive doesn't mean they have to stay that way. Alternatively (if it's an adult character who you'd expect to be mature), give them a reason/justification to themselves for being immature. If you understand why a character acts the way they do you can frame almost anything as a protagonist action. Also, let them fuck up, let them be unlikable at times, but let them redeem themselves.
>>
>>94763786
I make them cute and make them suffer and cry a lot.
>>
>>94763875
Retconning things is a fundamental part of how the universe in the comic works.

>>94763786
Either lots of fun visual gags or let them experience the world with wonder.
>>
Oldfag here, does Bones of Ruin still frequent this thread?
>>
>>94763786
I think the key to it is making them some measure of vulnerable.
Like we shouldn't feel annoyed that they didn't know something but watch them come back from falling down over their own stupidity. Immaturity doesn't have to come in the form of edgy behavior (IE Okabe from Steins;gate but he also gets over it), but it can come in the form of not judging things correctly as well.
There can be some moments where they say something dumb and we get second-hand embarrassment from it but don't hit us over the head with it.

What do you mean? How quickly someone reads through the story is dependent on what they like to stop and look at while reading a comic.

You can make action scenes last longer by peppering in more dialogue and drawing more of the actions happening (man raises his fist then goes in for the punch, panning to a different pov before the punch gets delivered while throwing some of his thoughts in.) This draws more attention to something happening. Alternatively, you can just have a quick succession of stuff happening and adding more text in to serve as a slow down too.
Putting in text ultimately can slow something down to your liking if your reader is assumed to stop and read something. Others will stop and look at the art if it is detailed as well.

This doesn't have to be completely closed to fighting, but anything that's going on. Another thing that affects this would be the panel layout- you can probably reference general art composition to guide where your reader's eyes are going and can also make them slow down or speed up the pace that they're processing the page at. Dynamic transitions/less panels on a page with fewer words is easy to go right through. BLAME! is probably pretty fast to skim through due to the lack of dialogue and at times pretty simple backgrounds (in the way that it isn't telling us much other than how empty it is or whatever weird organic growth there might be. It's great for setting the atmosphere.)

I dunno. That's how I've always processed it.

i'm very much feeling these - both the art style and the plotline. nice touch with the panels of the two characters standing, i'm guessing that was an intentional visual throwback to the first page?

i wouldn't worry too much about what that other anon said about having a concrete and accessible storyline - there are plenty of very good comics that have plots that deliberately leave their plots open for interpretation. obviously you should have a plan for what is going to happen, but that doesn't mean it needs to be immediately obvious to the reader.

Well, think about what you want to draw for your comic.

One of the important things to my comic I'm going to write, is, I want it to include people doing a variety of different things, instead of just standing and talking, so I try to draw things like a person holding a phone, and make an effort to try incorporate props.

Think about what's most important (eg, colour, detailed backgrounds, shadows) and practice that.

A boy falls in love with a girl. He is mysteriously gifted with her phone number. He calls her and finds out that she likes him as well. But the next day, she doesn't remember the confession. The girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who likes his own alternate self. Hijinks ensue as the two tell each other their darkest secrets to conquer the hearts of their other selves.

It's a good premise, the location's not that crucial although summer camp is usually associated with the US. It just matters how believable you can make the setting. Personally, I know jack shit about life in the soviet union, but if you do, why not...

I was trying to find an artist to work with on a comic collaboration forum, and got the following feedback for one of my scripts.
"As an artist I'd say your scripts didn't flow easily, they were kinda clunky to read. I'd suggest taking out the panel numbering specifications completely and only put them in if your artist asks you to."
Saying a script is clunky and lacks flow makes sense and is a valid complaint; however, getting rid of panel numbering goes against all I've learned about comic writing. I'm honestly quite baffled about how you're meant to write a script without numbering the panels.

Aw man. I was so close to finishing this weekend, but my tablet decided to die. I've already gone through the usual fixes, but this time it's honestly and truly fucked.

Fortunately I had some cash saved up, so replacing it wasn't too much of a hassle. I all I can do now is wait for my tablet to come in.

Still doing storyboards for pic related, I have three chapter of 30 pages each so far.

Would you read a comic about a military combat unit of magical girls going on missions in an all out war on alien Aggressors?
It will feature lots of /k/ommando babble, cronenberg-esque gore, psychological horror and a sci-fi plot inspired by the works of Stanislaw Lem.

Feels weird knowing this is the last time these moves will get used. I considered making Riv's attack in nihongo for one time's sake (also because it sounds a lot better that way).
these 'ultimate' techniques sure did become disposable, and their effects were always vague. Still, I think I drew the feathers and grass coating better than usual (the shedding-exoskeleton part maybe not as much). also Riv was only up on an ice pillar because I forgot to make her aim upwards. Then I couldn't fit her in the next scene without the pillar being so high that she clearly should have aimed downward.
meh. I don't do that very often anymore. Used to be every fucking panel of every comic. Always propping people up on sudden rocks or hills so they'd be lined up right.
>>

I feel like heavily regimented military stuff tends to take stories in a direction that's less fun for me. It's all orders orders orders, no room for individualized heroics. that's why 08th MS team was the best gundam from the original setting, they got to just kind of go off on their own and guerilla it up. now if your magical girl army was more like the foreign legion, we might have something.

>tfw Bamboo tablet from 2008

Some days I wish it would die already. But then again I should be happy I have it.

What tablet did you buy now?
>>

if you think that's bad, I'm over 600 pages and i've only gotten through the first 6th of the story!
>>

Hey, me too! Mine finally died after my abuse though. Sometimes I'd use it as a coaster. Probably shouldn't have done that.

I got a Wacom Intuos Pen and Touch Tablet. Got next day shipping for free, which is actually today. I might be able to get back in action by tonight.
>>
>>94787583
Mine fell down with the USB cable attached and I thought it was finally done for but then found out it still worked when I used a different cable. One day, though...

What size did you get? Wacom doesn't even look too expensive. I had read earlier someone bought a screen tablet for 300 bucks. All of this is very tempting.

I got small, around $100. The one I used was small and I don't have much desk space to spare anyways. I was tempted to get a Pro or a screen tablet, but the Pro was out of stock and a screen was out of my price range.

weird question to ask here, but would we look any different with different color blood? flourescent lime green to be specific. character development thing is why i ask here
>>
>>94788887
i mean i know the skin would probly tan the same, and veins would look different. but anything thats not obvious?
>>
>>94782860
Very odd, I work on my own, but I number the panels.. I also make note of the pages.
I suppose it varies on the artist, whether they feel they would be more comfortable doing their own paneling. If they're good at it, and it pleases you, I say bend to their will. If they're shit, but the art is worth it, consider getting an editor or another writer to serve as a third person, and if they're sane they'll reconsider it in a 2vs1 sort of way. And if they're shit and not worth it, get a new artist.

I'm also a little curious to know what your script looks like.
>>
>>94788887
Star Trek's Vulcans have copper-based blood (instead of human's iron), which gives them a greenish tinge.

So I guess bright lime green blood would make you a pale green? It'd certainly be more obvious on pale skinned people.
>>
>>94788887
>>94788935
Sulfhemoglobinemia, apparently green blood is a thing. And as >>94789006, mentioned, greener hues in places where it would normally be pink-ish. Blushing would be greenish, your gums would be sort of green, under the nails, albinos would have green eyes - bruises would be complicated (which are apparently green from the breakdown of hemoglobin to biliverdin).
The Green Blooded Skinkhas green blood due to this biliverdin thing.
>>
>>94789006
>>94789226
those are both pretty great answers, but what if you still have the red blood system and your blood is enchanted? would there be any notable differences becides sickly skin? and in that case would it even change lip and gum color? maybe over time at least right? i don't know how those skin tones work

bruises though, thats a pretty cool thing to think about. i guess they wouldn't last long on these mystic characters, but i can still depict them, i'm sure
>>
>>94789483
If magic is involved you can pretty much do whatever you like.

They appear normal, but they have bright green blood, and their skin and eyes flouresce slightly in the dark. Not enough to light things up, but in a pitch black room you would be able to see where they are.

on page 6, it doesn't make a lot of sense for her to start with 'then' when he asked a question, she's assuming a flat-out objection/refusal that he didn't make. maybe 'fine, give us the map..'
your pacing is so damn good. I waited way too long (read: haven't done it yet) to do a 'what is our group name?' gag

>>94788887
I remember the eureka moment when I realized that skin is white, blood is red, melanin in small concentrations is yellow, and those all mixed together give us the pinkish orange light tone that varies to brown depending on your melanin level.
so do different color math based on the blood and the pigment, and always assume skin is white because most chemicals or tissues are until there's something else to color them

Actually, let me let you in on shopping for one.
Wacom Cintiqs may be color accurate, but they are not nearly bright enough to be worked on for extended periods of time by any means. 150 nits is awful. I feel the best deal you're going to get is with the new Huion graphics tablets since they're 100 nits brighter and have a load of pressure levels. That small panel with the hand shouldn't cover the guys face or breach the upper panel row.
It's a tricky one - if you lower it, it'll be on level with the hand in the last panel and become redundant. Ithink you need to redo those last two panels.

Other than that, I like the page. Straightforward, easy to follow dialogue like this is perfect for the setting!

I guess I made BJ too hot for his own good lol. You're not the first person to comment that. I was going for gross looking but still looking capable of fucking your brains out. Although I'm a dude so maybe that's why I don't know what people are seeing in him.
>>
>>94802212
I think it's just a personal taste of mine tbqh, I don't know why I give a lot of preference to guys with similar traits you gave to BJ. You know, the whole "eye bags, 'dead' eyes, hair back, etc" package. I guess it's not an uncommon taste though since you say I'm not the first one to comment on it and a lot of people do like their fictional guys looking like that. L from Death Note being the most notorious example I can think of. Although I don't like L.

I think your way of drawing him fits what you are trying to convey, you just didn't count on us fetishists.

No. That's a typo. He's supposed to almost say "good explanation" (there's no spell check in clip studio) but change it to just "explanation."

The second part is intentional. The line is supposed to read "the truth would break my heart."

You... do know who that is, right?

You can read the other two shorts on my DA page: https://bridgefirecomics.deviantart.com/

It's not a full comic or anything. I've just been focusing on drawing really short narratives to help develop my storytelling skills. Plus I don't draw enough comics and I really need to since it's in my freaking name.

the phrase is 'til death, but that doesn't make sense in this context so I get changing it
"not even to death will we part" doesn't make sense to me though. maybe at death? in death? actually, given that he also means the reaper, "for death" makes sense.
Also that's fucking adorable, fighting Death for her.. though everything we saw of their setting indicates psychopomps are pretty damn lazy and are fine letting you take your sweet time and handle shit yourself
>>
>>94806876
Well you're going to have to make your own, for your own characters.
>first time drawing
That explains a lot. You've got a lot of practicing and brainstorming to do before you can just DO it and expect it to have any rhyme or reason. There are certainly guidelines for making good looking characters though. Things like the proportion and distance of the facial features, that sort of thing. Why don't you just show us what you can do right now?

Monday on Capeworld, so that means a text story-but this one is also a comic story! >So I get it, dude is a murderer, but this pacing doesn't makes you feel like in the mind of a murderer, at all
i'm trying to make a murderer the main character without any inner monologues. i enjoy those stories, but i wanted to do something different from what i usually see.
>>94815853
>I'm sorry, I chuckled.

>>94816427
Thing is the pacing comes as you don't seem to have a clear idea on how to plan your pages. I mean, you could have a more efficient result in less pages: establishing clearly the fact that the surburbia setting is volontarly empty with some establishing shots without the protag, then introduce the protag, make it clear that he's not like tired or something by showing visibly that he "needs" to kill. Like hunting for prey in a desert. Make him look more like a predator of some sort in hunting grounds. Then make him kill the two victims as they are established as something to look for. The whole comparision between a leopard and two antilopes could fit well. Make a chase and then go for the kill. It could take less than 10 pages and be more striking for the reader. All we have here is 30+ pages of closeups of eyes.

It's on hiatus at the moment. I hope to come back to it, but I want to seriously overhaul the plot as I was very dissatisfied with it. Slime Mold was made to be a silly little practice comic just for fun, I made the first chapter a complete story so I could end it there if I wanted to, but I ended up getting very attached to the characters and world I made. I'll reboot the story after I've rewritten it, as I'm just not proud of it right now.
As for the other comic, it's in the works. I'll probably release it in October, as I want a good buffer in place before I publish it.

Her legs are slightly scaled down compared to the rest of her body (though real life is more or less like that, in a style like this we expect longer legs) and her right arm is a tiny bit too long (try crossing your arm over your chest. your forearm almost touches your tits, right? even if you're a dude). Possibly because you treated the elbow joint as addition instead of subtraction. easy mistake to make
also her eyes are completely asymmetrical but holy shit I love this drawing and I want to marry it. What is this comic about where can I read it?
>>
>>94821852
oh also I just tried it myself, and for one arm to cross all the way over and grab the other arm when the other arm is hanging right at my side, my elbow has to be wayyy out in front of me. now I'm barrel-chested to the max, but I still think she'd have trouble reaching her other arm with her elbow still fully at her side. Basically it's treating her torso like it's not there. and with her shoulders raised, the thing I said about the forearm nearly touching the tits goes even moreso

>Intentional style change

How are you interpreting "style?" These three versions look fairly different to me. Although it's true some of the techniques I used carry over. But for variations of the same person they seem like they could be from different comics.

See: >>94803973

So if I understand correctly, her right arm should come up higher a bit at the elbow and her legs should be slightly longer?

What do you mean by addition vs subtraction (there are some fundamental terms I'm not familiar with.) As in I overextended the elbow when it should be tucked in more between the upper and lower arm?

Character is from some new Nickelodeon cartoon about magical girls. Honestly it looks like more generic flash garbage but I still thought of some things to amuse myself about it.
>>
>>94822035
>for variations of the same person they seem like they could be from different comics.
I guess, but to me they look easily like they could be three different people in the same comic. same basic way of drawing facial features, simply different features chosen. Were you really trying to make them look like a very different style?
>>

I would leave her legs exactly as is (they're already plenty spindly) just scale them up slightly (you might lose part of the thigh gap in the process of making them still line up with her existing hips)
what I meant is, when you have the arm proportions right, then you bend the arm, you kind of have to add a little to the outside of the elbow, and a bit to the inside of the krelbow... but sometimes people just add, or just subtract, resulting in the arm length changing dramatically right at the hinge. In any case, as I realized, I don't think she should be able to reach around her body like that without her elbow also being further-in in addition to further-up
sorry to be so complicated but I fucking love this and I wanna see it just right.
>new nick show, generic flash garbage
Well alright, fanart of dumb mindless things is often the best things.

Move whenever my fellows!

>tfw just when I decide to not be a cashier a better artist friend calls me and invites me to share a stand with him at a small convention since the theme is cartoons and he knows I browse /co/ a lot lately.
>is in 2 weeks, a bit less actually.
>gotta work on lots of drawings for stickers now.
Hopefully this means I will get an audience at least with the local people.

Oh I see what you're saying. I don't mean in drawing technique, I mean in the design of the characters themselves.

I "write" the page as I'm drawing. I have plot beats etc in my head and when pencilling I'll write tiny dialogue notes in the outer borders. Then when the whole page is pencilled I may change up some of the speech, little tweaks to get it sounding as natural as possible; that's what I love about making comics, it an be the most organic or regimented process as you like. Although I rarely do it I DO enjoy drawing from someone else's script, it's not something I'd ever do myself. Genrally most of my fave cartoonists use the "organic" process; everyone from Sammy Harkham to Chris Ware to Julie Doucet--almost a "stream of consciosness" approach to cartooning. What really irritates me is bad digital lettering poor placement and unnecessarily flashy panel shapes. Learn your basic grids first would be my advice to anyone starting out. It's all about beats and pace...I don't care how "bad" your drawing is, just make something interesting, all this wanga style cookie-cutter drawing really grinds my gears, however technically proficient an artist is. A boring image is a boring image. Gimme Gary Panter over Frank fucking Cho any day.

Weird films, been on a Quentin Dupieux kick of late and my current comic is almost a mash-up of (the Aleksei German) film Hard To Be A God, which I'm fucking OBSESSED with, and Waiting For Godot. I also read quite a lot of literature (not genre stuff, more like /lit/shit), people who only read comics tend to make shit fucking comics imho. Big into the Flemish Primitives as far as "fine art" goes, also George Grosz (reminds me, must pick up that Grosz bio comic soon, looks ace and mimicks his drawing style really well
