They also looked oddly cloudy, though that could just be "these are flashbacks" SFX.

I think there may be multiple Shiro clones though judging by the flashback dialogue when they were testing Kuron. Like they probably had all kinds of disasters because they were testing his "viability" and he is referred to with a serial number. Pic related.

I suspect given all the other nods to the old Voltron that they might try to work bits of the original Golion backstory in somehow, that Voltron was some form of overgod whose was scattered throughout the universe. Alfor finding the meteor just provided it with a form through which to remanifest itself, hence why the lions seemed to have consciousness independent of his blueprints.
