You should say "In a rush to get to the beach early, are you?" and "a speeding ticket"
As for the joke, I don't understand at all. Is it that they spend their vacations busting people closer to the beach?

His art is pedo trash. He's ColdFusion
>>
>>94395698
>>94395736

I'm not sure how to translate the joke into English on this one, mostly because I don't see many cases of this on American TV in comparison to our local culture. The joke is that they are corrupt cops. They are excited for the vacation period because that means they can stop people for speeding and similar small violations to get bribes. That's why the "give us a little help to help you", that's pretty much what they tell you here.
>>
>>94395757
Ah so it's like vacation for the citizens = hunting season open for the cops

Not sure how you would tweak it maybe I'm just dumb
>>
>>94395757
Ohhh crooked cops. I should have thought of that right away, I know exactly how that is in tacoland and it comes up in several of the webcomics I read made by mexibros.
Well see, now, I could help you get that joke across better, but one aspect that is never quite going to work is the idea that -on their vacation- they can go get bribes, but can't the rest of the time.
unless in the prior panel he was like "you know what that means!" and maybe to hammer it home even more unsubtly the other say "we can stop.." etc.. playing it straight, whatever.
But the logic of it is never going to come across, I think. It doesn't really make sense that crooked cops wait until a designated vacation period to act crookedly.
>>
>>94395756
ColdFusion is actually a pretty good guy who has done nothing wrong and you should stop bullying him, you monster. ColdFusion is a real man, not a beta manlet like you!
>>
>>94395261
Yes
>>
>>94395757
>>94395780
>>94395819
Oh wait, okay, so the joke is that during vacation time, more people commit traffic crimes, meaning more opportunities to pull people over (and thus get bribes) ?? because if that's the gag, then the major issue is the police dispatcher announcing 'our' vacation period.. that's just misleading if it isn't meant to be the actual cops' vacation time (which now that i think of it, would never be a thing)
>>
>>94395780
Yeah exactly that. Is kind of a whole cop thing so that's why they are all "our anticipated vacation period! Have fun!", part of the joke is the misleading bit. They don't get vacations themselves but the citizens do, so anything goes.

>>94395819
Is not that they can't get bribes any other time of the year, but more like on vacation period people get even more careless with the driving rules so they have more prey to hunt.

>>94395862
Yeah that's one part of the joke. The major issue you mention was intentional. The reader thinks is just the cops getting vacations and then going "wait these guys don't get vacations" while they reach the last panel.
>>
>>94395831
Might could try that. If'n I think of something, I'll let you know. This particular one, though, isn't really doing much for me. Only when someone was talking about animal mech pilots did I have any interest, and then only in doing drawings.
>>
>>94395881
Ahhh so the ideal structure of the joke is one of misleading you into thinking it's cop vacation time, and then you realize it is actually everyone else's usual vacation time
The fact that neither of those is really a thing is getting in the way of me helping think of a good way to do that, I'm afraid. but if the third panel had 'ch-ching!' in it, that would help
also I forgot to say you misspelled period
>>
>>94395920
>>94395819

Yeah I noticed the typo on period right after posting it, I fixed it for now.

Ah back to actually making the joke work (?) yeah I think I fucked up by saying "our vacation period" instead of "the vacation period", that would sound more ambiguous and work better I think. I may add some more straight reference to actually getting the bribe if I want this to work on English, again in Spanish it is kinda easier because it's pretty much daily life but seems cops are more regulated on the other side of the border.
>>
>>94395986
What we typically say in (american) english is "Vacation season" if we do say it at all. In british english it'd be something about holiday time I think, that's what they tend to say. here that sounds like it refers to christmas.
But yeah while we may not nearly have your problem with cops and narcos, we do still have a concept of crooked cops, so it should be no problem. Just have them lay on the corruption even thicker, riiight from the start.

actually I thought of a fantastic pun you can use that works in english. to "kick back" is to relax, as you would on vacation, but "kickbacks" are also bribes given to officials (granted that's more of a mayor thing, but still). So you could end one panel with "kickback time!" and it would be misleading slightly

Something is occurring to me that people in the post-apocalypse might be using cartoons (including the older sense, as in comic strips) to educate themselves about animals that no longer exist.. something funny about a misconception, confusion as to how elephants could have lived on peanuts and how dogs only ate the bones of their prey

TRAITOR!

Looking nice so far. I really like your work with the grayscale overall.
>>
>>94396539
A hyphen is the perfect way to do that, actually. It creates the right amount of ambiguity. Some people probably still aren't going to get it, but the only way to make it clearer would be one last bubble at the bottom, the blue guy saying "sweet, sweet kickbacks" or something. and at that point you've kinda put a run in the joke's nylons, so it's probably best to leave it as is

Saudra explains what's been currently happening in her life, jack demands a backstory, saudra's about to start but then remembers that she's starved so celest suggests that she could make some- Angel suggests to go out to Burger-O's to eat.

They go, leaving Celest in the dust.
>>
>>94396869
Fair point. This is one of those cases where I have trouble knowing which word can stay as plural in English, since we actually almost never use the singular version of the word. We always say "vacations", in fact I think I have never heard anybody say "vacation".
>>
>>94396869
I don't think that would work quite right, the subtle change in meaning of vacation would no longer really apply to 'people on their way to the beach that we can bust'
>>
>>94396971
I just realized another way you could sort of do it, that might be a hat on a hat at this point
If during the car-leap one was like "look out, vacationers, here we come" and at this point you still think they mean "here we come to join you" and then you realize oh

My poor cops can't be this carefree.

Alrighty final fix for the night. Seems it really is a hat on a hat, people seemed to like it better with this than with the previous line it had.

Also a friend said I could make the "$" sign I added on "small fee" green just for more money jokes, so I went with it. Subtle though, I don't want to leave anyone bugged with a weird green in the middle of a word balloon.
>>
>>94397607
Excellent. This is working now.
And the best part is, IF the joke were to fail, it would fall the other way, so to speak. Which is good, because it works in that direction. If the reader doesn't ever fall for the conceit that the cops were going to be on vacation themselves, the fact that they're THIS EXCITED to go get some bribes is still both inherently funny and ironically funny as it makes it a sort of vacation for them.
Basically your two-legged joke is now putting more weight on the stronger leg.

I have never seen anyone wear that kind of aegis and not be benevolent. You know why? Can't fight in that thing. Even if it was really flexible cloth, it would get in the way of extending your arms forward to hit someone, and it SURE as hell wouldn't be fun or easy to draw the cloth folding. Plus, you'll never have an action figure with that outfit. Nowhere to put the arm joints. That means you have to be a pacifist.

Kinematic touches on a range of delicate subjects such as visually impairedness, unemployment, and Robotics and personal redemption.

I want the readers to feel like they can relate to the story in a personal level with out them feeling like they are being preached to about these issues.

For this reason making the right intro is not easy, specially when it could potentially alienate or loose credibility so easily. I feel this story requires a lot of personal insight and careful consideration.

This is why I'm taking my time. This is project is a reflection of my experiences with my loved ones being legally blind... So please be patient as I too want to make this project come true the right way.

I draw sketch cards when exhibiting at comic conventions. A large stationers should have packets of blank A6 cards or postcards you can use to draw on (maybe even A5), though most people would probably prefer something A4/US letter sized. Use either single loose sheets of paper, or a sketchpad with easily detachable pages (as in your picture).

Get a multipack of sharpies or other markers.
Have some pre-drawn samples available.
Be prepared to do a lot of portraits and/or caricatures. See what setup other caricaturists have.
Be prepared to have people looking over your shoulder (and commenting) on what you're drawing.
Be prepared to adjust your prices on the fly.
Be fast. Good drawn quickly is better than excellent drawn slowly. At a convention you can tell people to come back later to pick up their sketch, but no-one will want to do that standing in the street.

For online, a tumblr full of fanart will get people to notice you. But you'll need to produce a colossal amount of pictures to get the all important follows. Reblogs are better than likes for publicity purposes.

The balloon for Dialogue 2b in Panel 1 needs to be larger to give the text more space, especially when compared to every other balloon on the page.

"She would make" or "She'd make".

You're falling into a trap of "coloring" things while working in greyscale. It doesn't work. All it does is messing up values and making it hard to focus on things you should focus on. You're not good at coloring, are you?

There's no reason to actually fill the clothes with a tone, nor is there any need to do the same for the windows. Clothes should be recognizable by just patterns and some blacks (blonde cat's shirt) and there are other ways to make glass recognizable; with a see-through glass (windows) it's especially easy - just lightly draw what's on the other side.
>>
>>94400986
Even with almost no text I manage to fuck the grammar. That's what I get for staying up till 4am I guess. The balloons are my Achilles' heel, I have to be more conscious of them, but I think I'll overcome them soon.

Thanks for the encouragement mate, I'll try my best.
>>
>>94401622
Coloring takes me an obscene amount of time, and I'm still not very confident in my ability to make textures and make the page work with pure black, so that's why I'm using greys. I'm slowly working toward it thoug, so maybe when chapter two starts I'll drop the greys.

The case of the dokuza~ Despite these normie characters, something creepy will happened! And the dokuza is not a fucking drink. Its read right to left, because i dont want to be filthy gaijin forever....

I have returned with a company name! And holy fuck, im still really bad at drawing. One thing i have learned is, if you want to be comic artist, never practice shit that isnt comic making. This is the, OFFICAL. /co/. PROMOTION. PAGE. meaning once when i create another 5 pages of the comic, i will go back and edit to post on /co/ again. Why? Well, combining all the panels into one would be impractical, and my comic is unworthy to take up 5 posts in this thread. /co/ might be wondering
>you took this long for something this shit
yus. yus i have. i had to over come my dignity and depression; and come to the realization i might be spending the next 20 years of muh life posting shitty comics on /co/

So it is mostly a tumblr problem then? One would think as long as the pages don't have a size too big it would be fine on the dashboard. I wondered because I see some comics that use either multiple pics (like owlturd) or a single pic (k009 and cult control) and not sure what is the consensus there.

Okay so two weeks ago I finished and posted a comic strip to Tumblr hoping to make a weekly habit of it, but I got swamped with depression last week so that didn't happen.

But now here's what I'm working on for this Sunday's comic. You'll get to read the gag itself when I'm completely done, but it's not even funny anyway so I don't want to get anyone's hopes up.

I also think this is my first time ever drawing a human caricature in a comic strip besides myself. When I tried making weekly comics two years ago all the characters were just featureless white blob people. So it's nice to confirm that I have made at least some actual progress since then.

>how do you guys go about designing your characters for a certain purpose

If I may be honest I just let thing flow. I brainstorm really hard and from all the ideas I pick what works better, sometimes I even find exploring scenarios I didn't think about first. Then I just let my characters interact in my head and find out what just "works" with them. A lot of rework happens if I feel they aren't natural enough or if I feel I'm forcing something they shouldn't have.

An example. In the old days when I used to roleplay on those "only yaoi" forums I remember I had a character who I always felt weird about having to roleplay gay stuff yet with the rest I had no issues. I then realized "oh it must be because this guy is straight lol" and who knew it actually made sense. I even threw that inverse "coming out of the closet" thing in the rp and although I was warned hetero relationships were not possible it led to some interesting interactions with the characters of other users. And my character felt more happy too.

The project is apparently a "made a theme song based on an external product" or something like that. Thing is he had to take a picture, a poem, a character or something and then compose the theme song. But he needs the actual thing he based the composition on so he can show that they are related and the song fits. So yeah that's why I have to update my stuff.

Also thanks! Yeah this sketch is from when my style was way more simplistic, I have tried to polish my style more but I haven't made a new drawing for her. I kinda want to do one but my friend says one of the old drawings is enough in that regard.

Just practice things you like anon.

Things are more likely to stick, and you will waste much less time, if you solve problems in work that you actually want to do instead of just studying for the sake of studying.

Practice should be secondary to doing actual art.

Just like if you were, say, learning to play basketball, you'd play a lot of games of basketball with your friends, and then practice whatever you're weak at like dribbling and shooting hoops by yourself on the side so you can do better the next game .

You might practice a LOT by yourself, at some point, but you'll be burned out as fuck and none of it will help you as much if you aren't playing actual games.

What do you guys like to do when you just want to write some random ideas or scenes down? Or just want to try out ideas? I want to write a story with lots of fights and monster battles, so not too much plot but just a lot of fun scenarios.

What is the best site I can host my comic on? I've seen way too many great comics on tumblr get passed over just because the site is hell to use and the tags are always broken. I would much rather advertise myself on Instagram/FB and have my Instagram/FB page link out to the site my comic is on. I have a decent paying job so money isn't really an issue here. This would just be a side thing for me.

The best option is always to buy your own host. If you don't have that much money and tumblr is not for you then try on Comic Fury and similar sites. Or just go to Tapas/WebToons.

To be fair tumblr is kinda shit with the tags, but I find them to be more useful for your own content. For example if someone is searching for a page with a specific character they can just use the tag of the character in your comic. Stuff like that.

Even I think my colors look eye-searing today. the hell. oh that's right, I reinstalled a graphics driver and it failed again. ugh. Is this what everyone sees?

Anyway, the triumphant return of Kaen's helmet. and a use of his turns-things-spiky ring that I can't believe it took me this long to use.
thanks to Maggles for the idea about wood armor. Sadly it was too resplendent to be allowed to last.
>>
>>94435654
no eye searing, but maybe work with a limited pallet
>>
>>94435654
While I like everything that is going on there, I'd prefer if you could use slightly different tones on the coloring.
>>
>>94435722
>>94435768
Yeah there's definitely something wrong with the colors.. I've been trying to fix it as I go, but it's definitely wrong. For one thing not everyone is supposed to be THIS pale, only the redheads.

I'm gonna just keep it consistent for now, since the comic's almost over, but I'm definitely going to get it sorted out before the next one starts.
>>
>>94435722
stick to a specific saturation
also, your characters lack shadows, think about where the light is coming from.
maybe you can get away without worrying about the lighting (i don't see a lot of webcomics worrying about that)
but stick to specific or close enough saturations
>>
>>94435891
meant >>94435828
>>
>>94435891
i mean of course as a rule of thumb. see what you can do when you limit yourself
>>
well on the other hand, when I bring it up on my TV hooked up to my other computer, it looks about right. other than Kaen's hair which is still unforgivably neon red. but then I did change the settings on that TV..
>>94435891
I thought I was, see. Two or three monitors ago, it looked just right. Now I look back at those and holy shit.
>lack shadows
well yeah I'm not shading at all. It's been pretty much flat colors all the time, though I'm giving Autostrada some mild shading just because she's shiny (and hard to make out otherwise, with a lot of darkness and complex shapes). and in this cave, I've started using dropshadows for.. pretty much the first time. that way not everyone looks like they're floating all the time.
I'd give some kind of excuse about how old videogames didn't change lighting, but a lot of them did. I've just had a perception issue where I autocorrect it in my brain and never actually see that it's happened. I literally only realized night scenes were blue-tinted about 5-6 years ago. so in that regard I'm a newborn babbu beginner, and have a lot to learn how to even perceive.
thanks for that advice though, that's actually new. I've never even thought about keeping saturation uniform overall. if it was an audio file i'd hit it with "normalize" I suppose.
>>94435722
Also never thought about a limited palette, but might be fun! It's fun in pixel art, after all. god when I was 7 i had such bad art OCD i refused to use the same color twice on any picture, lest people think the black hair and black shirt are the same material

You know what? I should get some screencaps and start eyedropping. That'll force me to see that when I otherwise don't. Because I totally don't. And you're right, that's extra important in that one because of the no-outlines thing. Which they then intentionally defied in that episode (or was it several episodes? It's been a while) where the guys in black blend in perfectly against the black area and then Jack wraps up in white to do the same thing in a snowy area..

Here's where I'm at now. (This isn't a whole days worth of work since the last post, I'm just an unproductive bastard like I've said before). Just need to add grayscale colors and shading.

So I need to know, on a scale of 1 to 10, how cringe is this joke and the way I executed it paired with my drawing style?
>>
>>94439777
hmmmm the legs look somewhat awkward I'd say you do them full adenvture time spaghetti style, the joke was 5/10 sorry, I think the appeal isn't the joke itself but the visual gag and that one is a 7/10
>>
>>94439777
I wouldn't call it cringey. Kind of weird in proportion to how funny it is, but that's never something I'll complain about.
You're aware your art needs work, I'm sure. I don't think it interacts with the joke in any way really.
This would be funnier if the quote was actually something a person would likely say don't-quote-me-on-that about.
>>
>>94437044
It doesn't really catch my attention but that's just me
>>
>>94439923
>>94439960
Thanks. When I came up with the visual gag initially I was pretty excited to get it out of my head and into the comic, but as I kept drawing it out I realized I was creating a mediocre execution of a decent joke and that I wan't doing it justice. But I didn't want to go back and redraw everything, so I just pushed to finish this.

I need to work on nailing the composition in sketch form before I go about moving forward. This one also could've benefited from a couple more panels, with one panel showing the girl actually taking the speech bubble.

I'm just criticizing myself, but it's good motivation if it's constructive. Still though, I don't feel like I wanna rework it at this point. I'll color it up tomorrow and post it. I have better ideas than this in my arsenal but if a gag-a-week format doesn't work out I'll have no choice but to start planning a for real webcomic.
>>
>>94440849
>I need to work on nailing the composition in sketch form before I go about moving forward
Bingo. I know that feeling of just wanting to get something out on paper, and not wanting to redo anything, intimately. Like we've fingered each others' butts, me and that feeling. But it's not a healthy relationship. "taking the time to plan carefully and sketch everything out in the composition" will snuggle you all night and have long important talks about your future together.
>This one also could've benefited from a couple more panels, with one panel showing the girl actually taking the speech bubble.
In most situations, I'd agree. A complex and strange action is best when gone through step by step. In this case, though.. this gag is a GAG, and could actually easily have been three panels instead (either removing the third panel or adding an off-panel wordbubble into the second)

redoing things is up to you, a lot of people have been saying lately that "just-doing" is better practice than endless planning. You really can't say which was the right decision until much later on when you've studied and gotten better.

I can only imagine you're going too slowly and too carefully in the former instance. Your flailing is at least causing some water to hit the fire. Now we just need to teach you how to use a bucket

Bad metaphor. Thing is that since it's comic artwork I want the thing to look nice quickly. The other drawings also look nice but requiere much more time that I ain't willing to invest on a fucking page panel.

I can finish a page in 3 hours. It'll be. Readable and enjoyable but not anatomically correct. Or I can invest 8 hours and it'll serve the same purpose just a bit higher quality. Which pisses me off.

This is like all those reviews of Pokémon Snap where they criticize how it wants you to center a picture. Of fucking course it does. It's a picture of a subject. Why wouldn't it be centered? All forms of art center the subject, I can't think of a single one that doesn't. A single famous photograph or painting.

>No one is saying you can't center something. you just need to center it within the rule of thirds.

I did, all it says is stuff about how centering is "boring" or "static" and how putting things off-center gives the eye "time to wander"
I don't agree with any of those, and I don't want eyes wandering.
I do agree with parts of it, though. That stuff about counterpoints. I have been doing that but I didn't know why or what it was called. But that's for two subjects, not one.
>>
>>94459784
Fair point. I actually choose a word but is the meaning of each letter what bothered me, since it doesn't make a 100% coherent sentence an I was worried it would affect something.
>>
>>94464037
>I don't agree with any of those, and I don't want eyes wandering.

Why?

The point of having the eye wander is so that the piece itself is immersive, and it feels like your subject exists within larger scope or world.
>>
>>94464196
When there's something in front of you that's the focus of your attention, do you turn your head slightly to the side? Or do you focus right in on it, so it's in the middle of your field of vision?
A lot of this guide was about "leading the eye". If something's in the middle, you don't really need a treasure map to get there, it's where you start.

But with comics, you're not looking at one static thing. You're looking at a series of images, and its your job to keep your reader interested, and moving smoothly from one panel to the next.

Perfectly centering (or just poor flow in general) can leave the reader hanging up on a particular thing, and it can even take your reader out of the immersion if your paneling and overall flow of the page is choppy.
>>
Let this be the last /hyw/
>>

What kind of things would it leave them hanging up on? I was trained on the funny papes, if there's something they're doing wrong, help me unnastans.

for the dense motherfucker who just doesn't seem to get it: things don't just exist and work because you want them to, nothing has ever just regurgitated on instinct and "works" and if you go on believing that then you'll have never learned anything, and you'll join the millions of other ignorant idiots who insist that they are artists but never actually wanted to put in the work of actually being one. you won't even take a moment to TRY to understand what we're talking about, you just want to aggressively deny that there's anything objective about composition because you're probably one of those "art is subjective" morons who hates being criticized. and if you think you're being some kind of rebel genius visionary by breaking the rules, you're not. why? because you don't even know what the rules are, how could you possibly break them?
>>
>>94465901
Do you hear yourself at all? Try reversing that. The rules aren't the rules just because you say they are. Nothing "just is" the rule. And if you can't explain why it works, then I'm sticking with instinct. If it really is good, I should feel it. I've got artistic sense.
I'm not even going to touch the alien logic in "you don't even know what the rules are, how could you possibly break them?"
If you don't know the rules, how can you possibly follow them?

>>
>>94466196
I'm sure that guy would be on your side, given that he studied it in college, and you're trying to force some kind of rule that sounds like it came out of a textbook.
I mean, if he wasn't a troll.
>>
>>94466244
He was just as dense, he would totally not agree with the composition rules that anyone should know from college
>>
>>94466269
That doesn't make sense. Why would he tout his degree as making him superior, but then not agree with it
>>
>>94466104
>If you don't know the rules, how can you possibly follow them?
you could know the rules, but you won't even try to learn them, that's why we're getting buttflustered. we offer to show you examples and even break things down into the simplest way possible, almost as if we're teaching you how to multiply numbers for the first time. but you halt us with "why"s and "that doesn't make sense"s because you don't want to learn.
>>
>>94466281
The closest thing is that he was autistic or just lying. Or both. He came up with shit like being a philanthropist even though it made no sense with anything that was being said in the conversation.
>>
>>94466303
>won't even try to learn them
Literally all I'm doing here is asking you to teach me. If what you're teaching doesn't stand up to the simple scrutiny of 'why' or 'that doesn't make sense' then how can you stand behind it? Have you seriously never asked those questions, do you just follow blindly?
>>94466308
Sounds legit to me. I don't think I've ever heard the term philanthropist used in the first person. It's positively gauche.
>>
>>94466308
philanthropist is a funny word that sounds smart, so he was probably trolling since i can guarantee at least half this board only knows what the word "philanthropy" means because they learned it from the iron man movie.
>>
>>94466373
or, or, here's an idea. if you don't know the answers to the questions of why... then just say you don't know. I'll continue doing shit my way, you will continue having more success by following the rules, and we'll be done.

you're a contrarian, listen to yourself, this argument can no longer go anywhere because we're at an impasse. this is it. it will go on forever like this so i'm done with trying. i could spend the next hour trying to dissect the hows and whys for you until we reach the goddamn molecular level and you still would ask how and why. i am ill equipped to teach you, clearly, so if you care (you don't, you're a troll) just google anything about composition. hell, just read the wikipedia article, that's probably too much for you too. if you want to learn about art, /ic/ will have all the references you could possibly need. i'm mentally exhausted from this ordeal and i feel bad for your parents because they had to deal with this for 18+ years

Actually, from what I heard from my parents at conferences, my teachers loved that I asked questions instead of just silently copying things down. They just asked me to stop because it was impossible to both teach all the required material and also go in-depth on any of it (I mean, sort of. we had enough goddamn free time in every class period just to sit and do nothing, I should have saved my questions for then). Why I was never skipped ahead I have no idea. Nobody told me it was a thing

helo this is page 3 from the webcomic that i am writing.

This is the pitch I wrote for it: Professional underachievers Andy Summers and Kevin Ingram's bromance will be put to the test when a conspiracy theory put forth on their podcast turns out to be 100% true and 100% dangerous.

How does that read to you? Does it get the point across? Any suggestions? thoughts?

Sort of the same but change of format and completely brainstormed writing.

And then I scrapped this version of the story. I started going to a workshop to get the story on the right track. It was in novel form for a bit but I'm going to transition back into a comic maybe.

A boy falls in love with a girl.
Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl’s phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day’s confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC’s own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

>Although I must agree that it would be better to have a different tumblr for each comic.

I don't intend to actually keep on making the Merchant & Pike comic beyond this one story. I'll probably make it three parts and then return to Witch's Hill. I don't see much of a reason to make a new tumblr for only a short comic, but if I do decide to revisit Merchant & Pike I'll make one for it.

>How did I.. not realize it was you?
I didn't namefag while making Witch's Hill, so when I made a comic that wasn't Witch's Hill and in a different style, I could understand your confusion.

It looks like you've colored the outlines of the buildings. That's an interesting choice, but not one that I think helps this picture. You can see how things look muddier now. You've also added some soft brushing along the edges of some walls and roofs, making it look like there's some fog or smoke there.
It's okay, we can walk you through this. Do you have your colors on a separate layer from your lines?

Opinions needed.
I'm trying to come up with a name for what super religious people living in a fantasy setting would call a Modern Day battleship. I was thinking Hellmount.

Thoughts or suggestions?

I think 'dreadnought' is the most classical term for a huge ship. It doesn't have that religiousy sound, but it does literally mean fear-nothing, and could be tied into fear of god, etc. I would say you could tie it in somehow with the ark concept, but what people forget is that an ark is literally just a box, not a boat. ark of the covenant, etc.
>>
>>94483454
Great! So since the light is coming from the upper left, try coloring just within the outlines of the plane of each building facing more to the bottom right. For example, that medium pink one, third up from the bottom left.. its front side should be darkest, so try just making that a darker, slightly bluer version of the same pink. Then do the opposite for the roof, making it a lighter, slightly yellower color, and staying within the outlines you drew
>>
>>94483454
Damn fine lighting, anon.
>>94483504
Ooh, I kinda like the comparison to the Ark. I might go with something like that.
>>
>>94483314
Gloryhol anon took some allahu akbar friends and nuked his chicano town in retaliation for ripping-off his campusvania comic
>>
>>94483551
I mean you might as well. Very few people are going to be nerdy enough to be bothered by it and groan "it's not a boat" to themselves.
Other useful terms that might come in handy: tabernacle / sukkah (plural sukkot), a tent or booth used by nomads, or (by people who actually have houses) camped in ritualistically to remind one of being stateless wanderers. Prior to building a proper temple, the ark of the covenant and the presence of God got their own thick-curtained one.
If your fantasy setting has any kind of special military camps or if there's dangerous magical objects that need shielding, you could use that.
>>
>>94483645
Well the original reason why I went with Hellmount was because it's being used by the antagonists to conquer and is described as "A nightmarish contraption of destruction fit for the lord of death, himself."

>>
>>94483804
Ah okay, so it's deathbringer themed, I can't think of any really good boat names to do with the ol' malach-ha-mavis but "mount" just sounds too much like it's a horse or a motorcycle.
Tell you what though, is it long and streamlined like a modern battleship? Because you could easily refer to it as a sword, metaphorically. There's tons of possibilities there
>>
>>94483807
Exactly like that. See how much more 3d the scene looks now? Now what about that far wall on the castle, it's also facing away from the light source, but not as dramatically. Also, that pillar just to the right (our right) of the castle's gate appears to be shadowed on its left side. But the left side's facing the light, right?

Take this with a grain of salt, coloring is still pretty new to me.
I also added more shadows to the houses, the ones closer to the viewer have darker shadows while the ones further away have lower contrast.
Also, I covered up your guy near the bottom of the page - don't do that.
>>
>>94483968
Good catch, thanks. I think I'll give the picture a little rest for now.

>>
>>94483804
Maybe it's not your taste but you could maybe take some pirate examples on that matter. The Black Pearl for example used to bring fear with the name alone in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. For real life examples, Blackbeard's ship name was Queen Anne's Revenge and it was as fearsome as the guy himself. Just try giving a name that inspires fear and a legend on itself, you can still make it religious-like.

>tfw I can't tell if the page composition is fine until I sketch it with details
I literally can't do rough drafts or rather I can do them, but they're useless to me. I need to immediately jump into the sketching stage, that's why I need a script written down somewhere first to at least have decently detailed guidelines to what's going to happen next in the story.
>>
>>94482754
If it's the whole page, then the quality is considerably shitty. If it's just a small or medium panel, then it's fine.
Still, fix that lighting, where is the shadow coming from? Why is the castle lit and the houses below not?

Basically teal hair kid is going to a boarding school but gets swapped with the pink hat criminal into going to a place called Jail land/Prison school (idk yet). The incarnation is filled with a variety of prisoners that range to aliens, monsters, cyborgs, anthropomorphic animals etc. But now they have their only human enrolled into this bizarre prison.

Sometimes I go through entire chapter worth of storyboards before settling. I write my story as I storyboard, but I had a rough outline before that.

>>94478484
Having a storyboard is sometimes a good place to start, its like a stick figures and dialogues, sometimes it is enough to give you an idea where to change or add.
>>
Is it lame to have the Antagonist not do anything aside from being a unifying figure for the antagonists faction?
>>
>>94488263
I wanted to add that I make a lot of storyboard, not all of them get made or end up in the same at the end.
>>
>>94488291
depends on what the antagonist is using their goonies for.
>>
>>94488420
He's using them to actually help the goonies take over the world with no actual benefit for himself
>>
>>94488242
Too bad, this isn't just Nick, it's 00s Nick.
I'm not saying your writing is terrible, just that you draw similarly to shows whose writing is terrible. That's no indicator of the comic's quality.
>>
>>94488415
More storyboards! make more storyboards!

okay, I will stop now.
>>
>>94488490
As someone who writes hundreds of pages of outline I gotta say that i love when someone makes storyboards
>>
>>94488442
if that's all he does then you better have a really good reason to why does it or at least making him really interesting in some way (personality, motives, design etc.).
especially if he's a the main antagonist.
>>
>>94488675
>you better have a really good reason to why does it.

How's this?

He's an artificial construct created by someone to specifically do whatever is necessary to advance the rhetoric of the goonies. He's unaware of this the entire time until the very end.
>>
>>94488446
which shows? i'm just genuinely interested with the correlation.
>>
>>94488527
Its actually super helpful if writer can make stick figure /simple/bad drawing + dialogue storyboards/ dialogue layouts. This extra effort goes a very long way in helping collaborator see the potential in someone's script.

Although I can't promise it'll convince someone to draw it for you, but it makes it easy to read. Although there are sometimes people who have a sense of ... for the lack of better words, artistic purity, and they don't want others to see their creation in anyway other than final and perfect creation they envisioned, it might be tough try to make a case for it to someone unless you already have a body of work to back up your words.

finally, after today im done revamping overall important story info finally ready to start writing chapters again

How do you guys handle your comic writing? Macro ----> micro (as in, making arcs made up of smaller arcs, etc) or vice versa (writing chapter by chapter in filling out semi-vague plot-lines)? Last time I wrote about 30 or so chapters in the latter format but I don't know if it was an efficient process..

>>94488906

>>
>>94489255
I do kind of a mix of both. I write out a few chapters/scenes to fit into an overall story arc I have in mind, and then I go back and flesh out the smaller arcs so I can figure out how chapters/scenes will fit into them.
>>
>>94422187
grinding is lame

just have fun and learn at the same time
>>
>>94489069
if you want the guy to be the main villain, then by all means, do it. Just make sure figure out how this antagonist is a major influence to hero's arc, maybe they relate on something , or the antagonist stands for something the hero has a hard time dealing within herself etc. Why is this antagonist her's to defeat and no one else's?
>>
>>94489255
Kind of both actually. I start with a more wide guideline of the plot, then start doing a more straight-plot of chapter per chapter which later I fit into arcs. At least when I used to be a writefag only. Right now I'm trying to start a simple comic which should just be one gag per day but I found myself falling into my old huge-plot habits by preparing some arcs that will be turning points for characters' development and interactions.

I just hope I have learned enough from Sinfest to not fuck it up like it did.
>>
>>94489332
don't forget, the more you lower your prices, the harder it is on everyone else selling the same product. You're undercutting them and devaluing what they do.
Not something to obsess over, but a non-trivial part of a self-run business venture.

Give me some fucking stupid ideas for a shitty webcomic and i might eventually get out my drawing tablet and scribble some shit.

Hey i got one right now. Its about these two guys, ones called Chalk and the other is called Cheese. Its called Chalk and Cheese.
Its the ol' wacky odd couple shtick. Chalk is a stoic humourless megalomaniac trying to get revenge on the world, Cheese is his irritatingly friendly cousin who spouts corny one liners and fouls his plans in increasingly stupid ways.

There you go. One idea in the fucking bag.
Next idea. NEXT. Idea.

Hey got one already its about a guy who keeps trying to come up with ideas for webcomics and all he can think of is shit.

So he writes a webcomic about shit. Its called The Floater.
