Stand Still Stay Silent is a Post-Post Apocalypse Webcomic set after a plague has wiped out most of humanity and most other mammals. A few turned into horrible Cronenberg-esque monstrosities rather than merely dying. The comic takes place 90 years after the infection first hit, with the Scandinavian survivors launching their first research-exploration mission into the unknown.

She takes fighting to a ridiculous degree and probably never had any interest in books. It's clear from the way people clear out buildings that books aren't exactly in abundance in the setting either.

Of course this is prior to him becoming one of the main reasons they survive to reach Chapter 16, but that's spoiler territory.

SSSS really carries a huge Thing vibe in the troll design. The earlier scene (previous thread) where Sigrun finds the barricaded room in the 'death house' had it in spades too: twisted and deformed bodies, organic matter crawling from corpses up to the ceilings, etc.
>>93978762
One of the most horrifying pages in SSSS. Now you realise there's still something left of the original animal left in there. Same for the people-trolls too.

>>93989077

>>93989233
Oh, no, I'm not saying it shouldn't be discussed here. Tumblr is good for art but terrible for any sort of a discussion, and reddit is... useful I guess but I certainly don't feel the need to ever engage with the community in any way. 4chan is, despite the amount of trolls, still the best place if you want to simply discuss something.
>>93989320

What i meant is that those are pretty much the only places with enough people who know this comic (aside from the discussion part of the comic itself).
Im not staying out of the comics own comment section because i think its full of redditors and tumblerites.
>>93989982
The world is the evil land of stupid people. But in most places it's unacceptable to tell those people that they're stupid. We all need to be told that something we say is dumb as fuck sometimes.
>>93988993
I used to be way more active, specially back when the comment section wasn't on Disqus, but real life dragged me away, some months after the forum was born

Before i go to bed i'll write a mini-blog post for those interested to know what the other two parts of human soul are (according to ancient Finns).
>Mieli (mind).
Without this you went insane and could live for only as long as you were taken care of.
It was possible for a mage to magic ones mind back, but it was a bit of a 50/50 game (possibly because one of the ways to cure madness was to rub manure on someones skalp, keep him in water over night and the next morning yell at him to scare his mind to return.
>Henki (life, breath, spirit)
This was the most straight forward part of your soul, it manifested as your breath and if you lost this part of the spirit, you would stop breathing and die rather quickly.
Also the part that would go to the afterlife.

The later is summoned back by the Saami shaman for the Finnish soldier after he is accidentally shot by a Russian soldier after the war was already over in the critically acclaimed movie Cuckoo. Speaking of which, why aren't there Saami in this? They are the only ones to still remember all of the old Uralic faiths in present times, would think they had the strongest shamans.
>>93996870
Nordic country focus. Also, who knows, maybe they were absorbed into the Finnish and Swedish survivors?
>>93996870
most of finland is surviving by the southern lakes, if there's any saami around they're probably waay too north for the finnish to bother with contact
>>93996870
Even in the real world the Saami keep to themselves from what I understand of them, though thats admittedly not much
Though, minna has been criticized by the tumblr side of the fanbase for not having them appear and point to this as proof shes racist so, maybe she thinks avoiding them all together will be better, its kinda of a damned if she does, damned if she doesnt scenario with that.
>>93996393

>>93997160
She's in a situation like that, yes. Honestly, for all the "cultural appropriation" people scream about, they don't seem to realize tokenism or other forms of one person from one culture having another person from another culture in their work, no matter how familiar they are with said culture, is appropriation. Minna is half-Swedish half-Finnish, but representing people from Iceland, Denmark, and Norway is appropriation. Cultural appropriation is a neutral term though, however much the tumblr-monkeys want to fling shit and scream at the top of their lungs. Honestly, appropriation has been going on for centuries and if we only wrote shit from our cultures, the world would be a lesser place. Minna is showing a world focused on the Nordic perspective. How Finland, this weird, Uralic culture is considered part of that family through history and contact. If the Saami were around, it'd diminish their role in the story. Each culture in SSSS serves a clear purpose, with traits or for a more harsh term, 'gimmicks'. But these gimmicks give us a clear idea of the stereotypes from these cultures in the setting. I have no idea what the average Swede from modern day Sweden is like. But I do know that a Swede from SSSS is probably a fighter or an academic. I know a Danelander from SSSS probably is colored by the tragedies faced by his people recently, but also their longstanding obsession with reclaiming the past. Icelanders are probably the most diverse group in the whole setting, with all different types of folks. But the average Icelander in SSSS, is a peasant. Anyways, the world-building here is great and is more taking inspiration from reality to paint its world rather than directly adapting reality to this foreign world. Does this mini-essay make sense? I'm OP by the way.
>>93997368
My theory is that the virus is partly magical in some way. Perhaps a plague sent from the literal Gods, it's possible. Or the fact there's several pantheons around, it could be any God or group of Gods that started. Point is, even when the virus is stopped, the soul is still tainted and must be cleansed, then led to the afterlife. Killing a troll doesn't end their suffering, it only frees them from the shackles of their body.
>>93997375
cltural appropriation is IMO a good thing a lot of the time, with of course exceptions cause that's just what life is like, no cloud without a silver lining and vice versa
being anti-appropriation IMO ends up being practically cultural segregation and that's shit
>>93997540
Without cultural appropriation, we wouldn't have rock, Tolkien...There's probably more but my brain is fighting me.

Check out this:
http://minnasundberg.fi/artd.php
This is her webcomic before SSSS. Her art is more rusty, and the ideas not as explored. But it touches even more upon the dream aspect that's only briefly explored in SSSS.
>>93997375
I think I get what youre saying, that this story is from the real-world nordic perspective, as well as its own in-universe perspective, right? Correct me if Im wrong
I agree with you there. the danes, swedes, finnish, and icelandic are all not only real nationalities for us, but in the story they almost fit a role similar to rpg races with their own in-universe lore. Adding more races/cultures that share traits/lore space would weaken and unbalance the ones we have.
I would say if she *really* wanted to placate the tumblr crowd she could just have the Saami people integrated with the finns, maybe just have a few background characters be darker/ect, even if they didnt have dialog, but then again, you absolutely know the criticizing wouldnt really stop
Just like every other time you give tumblr an inch, they would just go from "why dont you have the saami" to "why dont they have speaking roles" to "why arent there x/y/z races too?" and so on into infinity. I honestly feel bad for minna, there really isnt any winning here on that front.
>>93997885
The winning has been on her and hard for a long while. People asking for X nationality or Y place to be mentioned. Really, to me the story is about a very simple adventure in a very complex world. It's supposed to be grounded. There's stakes, and there's consistent, internal rules. Giants are strong. Infection is a death sentence. Magic exists, and it works like this. That's why I never broke too much of a sweat over the person having difficulties worrying about how muscles break steel. One might call him 'sperging' and an 'autist' to dismiss his opinion but demonstrates an almost overpowering fascination with reality at the cost of everything? This story is fantastical, using elements of fantasy and science fiction immerse you. That's what's important.
But you shouldn't sacrifice thematics for that, and that's what I feel would be the consequence of having non-Nordics involved. I feel that if Minna does include them, it'll be at the comic's conclusion. Then, maybe a sequel could spawn exploring that discovery alone. That could be very cool. Some fans have made maps for Spain and Newfoundland, and focusing on the culture aspects of both of those areas. I enjoy this mightily, and if I believe my memory is correct, Minna readily supports those efforts too. But what a lot of them miss is the, avatism of the setting inherent to the defaulting to old beliefs.
>>93998093
Oh my, what a rookie mistake in the second word. "Whining", instead of "winning". My bad.
Another note. Know what I liked about that gentleman from the second thread, who complained about the lost realism and when the story lost him? He was willing to engage openly and discuss points I myself never considered. Though I don't think his points were too valid, I respect his sentiment.
>>93998093
Why is muscles breaking steel unrealistic? It's all about mass. An elephant can trample the shit out of a car or pierce it with his tusks.
>>93998297
No hand holds or places for a body to apply pressure. But then someone with a little more biology experience came into the thread to explain we passed the sensible event horizon a long time ago when talking about ligaments from different bodies being combined together and other interesting science tidbits I have no earthly idea are true or not.

oh hey that was me
the first spain dude, at least; kinda lost interest on map making when I couldn't find good maps on castles and military bases, did anyone expand on that stuff?
>>93998649
No clue but it still comes up in google maps.
Did you ever have plans to tie it to local folklore? I'm a history major, but I have two major embarrassments. While I know most about every other part of the world, two places are blackholes of my understanding: I know nothing about Spain after the Franks, and I know nothing about India until the 7 Years War. So I'm quite interested what you might be able to tell me about culture and customs.
>>93998649
/tg/ origin yes? I can't find it on their fan forums.
>>93998367
It's not that simple. You can have a wizard turn a pineapple into a helicopter without anyone batting an eye, but have that helicopter lift off in a field without flattening the grass and people will cry bullshit. No one gives a shit about the biological possibilities of zombies, but have them roam the arctic or the desert and people will call bullshit about them not freezing or drying out, but then make them magical frost liches or cursed mummies, and people will shut up again. Impossible and wrong are two very different things.
>>93998093
>>93998649
>Spain
What, on account of mountains? The most likely places for human survivors aside from Scandinavia are places like Sibiri and northern North America including Greenland on the account of the cold and all of the tiny islands around Canada. Deserts. Oceania on the account of thousands of tiny islands as well. Himalayan valleys on the account of comparable prosperity coupled with isolation.
>>93998693
well, there's all these stories of tricking the devil in a deal, the aquelarres and assorted witchraft stuff, and all the stuff with saint john's eve, like walking through embers to purify yourself and all that, but my knowledge is pretty scarce, so the idea was to get some books and read up on all that, and for all I know that would have changed my view of what it'd be like.
still, what you're gonna get is what I had in mind at the time: there's this one lovecraft story with the romans on navarre I think, and I really wanted to capture the feel that gave me, whith all these "modern" myths and folklore being an echo of something lost to time
But that'd be just one side of it, you see, where half the population just gives in to the disease and consorts with the trolls and their dangerous magics, while the other side went full into inquisition trying to keep order. And like, it'd fit way better, right? Unlike for nordics, the old gods are way too mysterious to try and get close to them, and getting into the paganic and witchery would suppose a huge leap in faith compared to the protection granted to the faithful to God, more in line with the strength of nordic gods
so then you've got some pagans actually rejoining the old gods and folklore, the misled trying to spread the disease to please their troll masters, and the inquisition trying to stop both out of fear and fed by willpower and fanatism alone, while some french survivors from the pyrenees develop radio techniques to communicate even through troll territory to find survivos in northern france, but mostly helping the inquisition's government keep contact with all other sites, and the whole thing starting to collapse by the time the main, canon story gets going
>>93999023
Forum actually, should be in the "survivors outside the known world" thread, which used to be pinned to the top
but it's been so long that the thread might have been deleted for all I know, but I did spout my nosense on what few /tg/ threads I could find back when there was that initial interest
>>93999576

And then, add to that that I played a lot with exin castillos as a kid and that castille is a geographic castle and practically the area with most castles on europe, and you can already see my autism blinding me and taking me on a wild ride.
Nowadays if I go back to the idea I fantasize with what some anons have already said about dryness possibly being bad to trolls, spain being one of the european countries with most sunlight hours, and our vegetation being adapted to thrive on there being wild fires every few years, but I gotta wait first for the comic to explain if any of those would actually be helpful at all

i think there is not much discussion of this comic because there is not much to discuss each page, it takes too long for things to happen

Fun fact about Leaf Troll here, it's actually missing several things necessary for life in most organisms. Minna has also stated that while it *was* a troll, "it was far too small to have been an adult".
emil and lalli are cute

Sigrun's actually very competent in the areas she knows about but she really wings it when her authority is questioned about things she has no clue on.

Mau immediately walk in with muddy paws all over their nice clean floor - cats are still assholes 90 years into the future.

You will have to present your idea to the actual majority of the fanbase. As it was already mentioned, the maximum number of fans here is about 6 people.

Stop hating yourself.

Which is funny considering it is updated almost daily.
I suppose Minna's pace is just too ponderous for us, or we would have to basically story time a chapter at a time and discuss that.

So, we got child monsters here.
As if the dead space wibes weren't strong enough already.

Well the cleansers kill off much of the monsters via fire, also the things that kill in cold are the cold itself as well as the dryness.
So, if you have hot days with dry air, id say those mutants are gonna turn into salami pretty quickly, unless they hide in damp caves till the night/cooler season.
You could for example say that there are "safe-ish" seasons to be outside the castles, during which folks forage for food and expand and then there are unsafe months during which walls are manned, cats are let loose and anyhting that looks funny is burned.

Anyone else wanna brainstorm this stuff?
Let's finish this storytime!
