Here we go boys...

Calling this event "Metal" just feels so out of place,

Like it belongs in the 90's or something.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>93814048
It would have better art if it was from the 90s.

Thanks OP!

Wouldn't be the first time they run away from a giant war would it?
>>
>>93813986
Anyone know if these are getting collected or not?
>>
>>
>>93814167
>T-this is not a Batman-centric event
Sure it isn't, Snyder, sure it isn't
>>
>>93814208
I mean, no shit, why even bother asking this
>>
>>93814211
Even the tie-ins are related to Batman. Not Batman-centric indeed.
>>
>>93814238
It's a series of special one-shots, it's not guaranteed.
>>
>>
>>93814211
I think that just means it's not some Gotham-only thing, but involves the entire DCU. It was obvious Batman was the main character from the first announcements.
>>
>>
>>93814048
I really really really really really really really really fucking hate them connecting every single thing together. The metal Nabu's helm uses? Connected. Aquamans' trident? WW bracelets? The material Batman's car is made? The metal.

Snyder is a fucking hack.
>>
>>
>>93814306
>The material Batman's car is made? The metal.
Seriously? They went that far? The Batmobile is now made from a special metal instead of regular old metal

This whole event in stupid
>>
>>93814334
Anon is making a joke and the fact you didn't recognise that makes it pretty difficult for you to call anything retarded
>>
>>93814334
Nah, he's just rambling about how they might as well do that stuff. They haven't gotten that point yet.
>>
>>
Too bad more of /co/ does not actually buy floppies. So they could prove their disdain by not purchasing this and make a difference in sales which would cause some change at DC.....

Oh well. It will sell well and give everyone more fodder to bitch and whine.
>>
>>
>>93814334
Not the Batmobile. That was a joke but you see my point? Literally any unique metal substance or object you see now is connected to the nth metal. How fucking retarded is that? Maybe the metal created for the GL rings are the same too or the Reach scarabs. That's why Hal is shorting out.

This is as bad as Weisman making all the DC comics intelligent apes (including congorilla) have the same origin story in his cartoon Young Justice.
>>
>>93814398
>>93814355
Well shit I should have known, but you have to forgive me after the reveal that the crowbar that killed Jason is also nth metal I didn't think they could sink any deeper.
>>
>>93814398
To be fair, it does streamline things a bit if all the intelligent gorillas are from Gorilla City. Just saying.
>>
>>
>>93814398
I don't see anything wrong with a unified origin.

like it removes the hidden depths of the DCU.

If you still don't get it let me simplify it so a marvelfag can understand...
Iron mans armor? The same metal. Wolverines skeleton? Same metal. Ultron? Same metal. Thor's hammer? Same metal. Spidermans web shooters? Same metal. Flying fantasticar? Same metal. The metal quinjet is made of? Same. Hawkeye's arrows? Same metal. Magneto's helmet? Same metal. Prof X's wheelchair? Same Metal. Cyclops visor? Same metal. Quicksilver

I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Calling it now: Dark Crisis is gonna be the name of the next "Crisis" event.
>>
>>
>>93814635
They already do that. Everything is either Vibranium or Adamantium, the latter just being a manmade alloy based on Vibranium.
>>
>>93814575
Fuck off, the Marvel/Black Adam family have always been extremely important to the DC magic side. It was only in New52 their prevalence got reduced

Dark Crisis is just a cute nickname for this event itself with the "Dark" Multiverse. They want to avoid events named Crisis though, so we got stuck with "Metal".

>>
>>93814826
Oh shit it's the akatsuki
>>
>>93814306
I'm OK with it. It doesn't really hurt any of that stuff. It's pretty much the same as how vibranium is always the go-to in the Marvel U when you want to explain that you have something really strong with physics-defying properties.

I can't say I particularly LIKE giving everything a uniform explanation, but it's harmless at worst, and it does help tie all these disparate mythologies together to some degree.

And if you're gonna have a big, universe-spanning event, it's cool to have it actually touch on the history of the whole universe.

Batman built himself a respawn point.

Batman has a machine specifically designed to bring himself back from the dead.

What the fuck.

>>93814990
Oh didn't you hear? According to the magic pixies that haunt the interiors of the editors' skulls, Batman is literally the only property they have that sells at all. So obviously, the guaranteed seller needs to have all of the biggest promotion all the time, because the pixies told them that's how logic works!

Thanks OP, looks kinda cool.

So Batman was building a respawn machine, how long do you think he'd have kept it secret from everyone else and used it just for himself?
>>
>>93815124
>Batman has a machine specifically designed to bring himself back from the dead.
Yep and it's powered by the nth metal that now does whatever the plot demands it.
>>
>>93814394
Trigon?
>>
>>93815169
It's not a respawn machine. It transforms you into Batman. Which basically ensures that Gotham will always have a Batman, some guy will step into machine with each passing generation and will get BATMAN'ed.
>>
>>93815153
Yeah it's going to be interesting to see how DC makes that terrible idea even worse
>>
>>93815026

>>93815169

This is the same faggot who built a satellite designed to turn innocent civilians into murder machines against their will, knowledge, or consent, all because he reeee'd out over his co-workers having the utter gall to have their own opinions. >>
The writing and the plot were awful. Snyder should never be allowed to touch Batman again
>>
Where is everyone getting this whole "respawn point" shit?

From reading that page, I thought batman built one of those healing tanks that saiyans use to bring themselves back from the brink of death.

>there will always be a batman
So it also doubles as a cryogenic sleeping tank
>>
>>93814965
It's pretty clear they just mean the bat thing/monster?, not an actual biological relation.
>>
Someone should storytime Batman #49, that's when Bruce used the machine and saw all the altUniverse Batmans getting wrecked.
Oh, and finally, that issue make sense now. In the context of that story stories of random Batmans amde no sense at all.
>>
>>93815236
>some guy will step into machine with each passing generation
It's not some "guy", it was meant to be used with clones of Bruce. There was a story taking place in the future (might have been a Future's End tie in) that showed it working.

Why are anti-snyderfags so annoying? Morrison got to make Batman his own creator through timetravel shenanigans but when Snyder tries to do another "the true secret origin of batman" story /co/ goes apeshit.

>>
>>93814864
>It's pretty much the same as how vibranium is always the go-to in the Marvel U
My problem here is that other items from extremely different origins are getting linked to something exclusive to earth

Making allusions that the lantern ring is made of this metal is like expecting people to accept that Thor's hammer is made out of vibranium.

Snyder's writing has all the subtlety and depth of a firecracker.

He saw Multiversity and decided "Oh I know, I'll just ignore Grant's work and make a BIGGER, DARKER DARK MULTIVERSE" because Snyder's not a very imaginative writer. He just takes shit that's already there and makes it dark and edgy.

That's what batfags like but god do I not want him ushering in big universe changing events.

I've noticed that Scott Snyder has this trend in his writing.

He wants to leave a huge mark, but he's always forcing it too hard.

Every story arc he's trying to redefine some portion of the mythos in his own mold. He wants SO BADLY to leave a permanent, defining fixture in Batman's history.

Morrison didn't make his Batman story into THE BIGGEST THREAT EVER FROM THE DAWN OF TIME THAT EVERY SINGLE THING IS CONNECTED TO AND OVERSHADOWS EVERYTHING!

which shows surprising reserve since that's usually right up Morrison's alley.
>>
Batman can do things no other peak humans can. Maybe we should start a mystery as to how a man can master all styles of combat while simultaneously being an engineer, scientist, detective, peak physical specimen etc which ends in a war between Apokolips and New Genesis with Monitors thrown in for good measure. This is how absurd the whole thing comes across, and then Joker knows things because why not and there are secret societies like in pretty much everything Snyder and Tynion write. Random objects of great power are introduced willy nilly and then forgotten about in the next 5 minutes. Where exactly did Bruce get Diana's bracelets and Arthur's trident? are there copies of these? suddenly Duke Thomas can see across universes...ok and the tuning fork remains forgotten, Hal is working for Guardians (who're dead). More importantly we finally find out why the Court of Owls exist 5 years after their story was told and in a different book altogether while the issue where Bruce regains his memories suddenly makes sense now which is a slap in the face of all those reviewers and fans who gave it high praise because it is the detractors who stand vindicated as that issue never made a lick of sense back when it was published.

Snyder and Tynion fired every thing they could but at the end of the day this story simply boils down to, evil Batmen vs JL and that's all there is to it.

You know what's especially galling about that? I mean aside from the obvious logistical failing of SHE'S FUCKING WEARING THEM, HOW ARE THEY IN THE CAVE?

We actually know where they come from, so you can't just bullshit a retconned origin for them out of nowhere. They were forged from the remains of the Aegis itself after it was broken by the spear during the Titanomachy. They were specifically designed to be used by the champion of the Amazons, and are unique, no other Amazon has ones like them. This was established back in the Perez run as an explanation for why they're indestructible.

So, what, you're telling me the Aegis was made of Nth Metal? I guess that explains the shockwave thing in the movie! Cause, to be fair, Nth Metal is on the same of level of "fuck you, I can do whatever" as the Starheart. ... Which is probably also made out of Nth Metal now.

So is there an universe out there where this is a masterly written cosmic event that deals with how Thanagar's use of Nth metal has affected the universe at large, leading to a lot of conflicts over said metal and it's uses? Or perhaps even just a universe where Batman isn't the star of an event about something that isn't supposed to have anything to do with him...

Yeah thats always bugged me about Snyder playing with Morrison's toys. There's always this aspect of one-upmanship. Instead of just having this dark universe being one of the empty earths Grant left for other people, he just flips over the map and makes something else. And that something else only refers to his own work, rather than weaving in what other writers have woven into the DCU tapestry.

this is fun stuff, feels like when Morrison's Batman was going on with all the speculation
I'll try to sum up the stuff we know so far, correct me if I'm wrong

>the story begins at the dawn of time or whatever when an outside force introduces this metal stuff into the DCU. even the gods use this metal to make weapons
>humanity begins with three tribes: bear tribe (anthro, immortal man), wolf tribe (vandal savage), and hawk tribe (including hawkman, as retconned here). then somehow a bat tribe appears (see last issue). if I got it right from this one, the big bad of the event/barbatos/some random bat demon (these may be the same) created this tribe. the bat and hawk tribes went to war for some reason.
>khufu (hawkman) finds the spaceship with the metal in ancient egypt, hath-set (agent of the big bad) curses him, makes him forget his earlier memories. hawkman spends his time between reincarnations investigating the metal. he assembles or recruits the blackhawks and challengers, but their attempts backfire. he leaves through a portal into the dark multiverse.
>every mythical creature or immortal (ras, etrigan etc.) got their powers from the metal. every (or at least some?) meta(L)human got their powers the same way. there is a grou of immortals (aptly named the immortal men) who are also connected to it.
>batman says here that he has felt that the metal was targeting him. he assembles the outsiders to investigate it. during his 'rebirth' in superheavy he has a vision about the metal. using the vibrational frequency acquired from the multiversal fork, various artifacts, and duke, who is a deus ex machina, he tries to peer into the dark multiverse and fails. a group of bad guys witness this and the dm invades.
SPECULATION
>the big retcon of the event is that the big bad/barbatos/true father of batman, who also created the bat tribe, is somehow responsible for batman's creation, and uses him as an unwitting agent to open a portal into our multiverse.
>>
>>93815387
No, anon, this is a plot point Snyder has brought up before in a future-Batman story in Detective Comics #27 (the nu52 volume), that Batman would build a machine that makes a fresh clone of him implanted with all his memories up to and including "I shall become a Bat", every 27 years.

Then after the Endgame story arc, Batman and Joker were seemingly buried alive, they survived thanks to the Dionesium pit but with amnesia. So amnesiac-Bruce wound up giving up his happy new life by getting into the machine and using the memory-imprint on himself.
>>
>>93816879
The Wizard was always dead/not dead even in the original golden age stories.
>>
>>93820160
>Resurrection machine

It's like you haven't read Batman since before the fucking Rebirth you absolute retard.

It's not a respawn machine. If Batman dies, he dies. It's a "Turn Bruce into Batman" machine, which he used on himself after the whole revival and amnesia deal.

It's hard to believe how many dipshits here are bitching about a point in Batman thats already a little over a year old.
>>
I'll be honest, Snyder's run was sort of ok until the Jim Gordon Batman. Apart from the Joker stuff. I liked Zero Year. Tom King's run is just awful though.

>>93817672
Morrison's Run was for the most part surprisingly good and reserved, but The Return of Bruce Wayne kind of ruined that what with Morrison's head firmly up his ass whilst writing it.
>>
>>93817672
He sorta did, in that he straight-up literalizes the existential dread that fuels Batman into the Omega Sanction aka a giant demon bat that is an extension of Darkseid, he was just subtler about it.

And to be fair, a LOT of anons hated on Morrison for "ruining Batman" circa Final Crisis.

If Snyder was smart he'd make Nth metal the connecting material to the Sphere of the Gods like the Speed Force is connecting material to the Bleed.

That's why its connected to Barbatos (4th world) and the Greek/Egyptian pantheon (Skyland) and why the Guardians hate it (Guardians hate magic. They exiled all magic from the battery in the form of the Starheart).

So mystic artifacts? Nth metal. Mother Boxes? Nth metal. Anything else-not Nth metal. It would only give a "unified origin" to god sphere related materials and that would be okay because all that stuff was already unified.

But Snyder is NOT smart, so Nth metal will just be a portal to the Dark Multiverse where the evil Batmen and maybe-Barbatos lives.

Fuck you Snyder. Nth Metal could have been so cool and you cocked it up.

Speed force links to Bleed.

Nth metal links to God Sphere.

Imagination links to The Rock of Eternity and House of Heroes.

Whatever shift ships like the Carrier are made out of links to the Monitor Sphere. The Superman Thought Robot was probably built out of a similar substance.

The Source is special. It's outside all three layers of the multiverse. It's Monitor-Mind. Mother Boxes link directly to The Source so they'd probably be made of both Nth metal and pure Source. Most Apokalips/News Genesis tech is probably Source infused Nth Metal.

If I was writing this I wouldn't have Psycho Pirate's mask be Nth Metal. It would be its own substance linking to Limbo.

I bet y'all just salty because you are brainlets and couldn't pick up the themes of this issue

>The Court of Owls were the grand conspirators of Gotham. They were Batman’s greatest manipulators and deadliest villains, but this comic now recasts the Court of Owls as the secret saviors of Earth. Snyder describes the bats as protectors of the dark, and the owls as protectors of the light. He narratively re-purposes both the Thanagarians and the Court of Owls as guardians of light and justice. This is everything we thought Batman was supposed to be. Looking at the Owls in this new light (pun intended), we suddenly learn the reason the Owls were manipulating Gotham against Batman.

>This story ultimately reveals that Batman’s mission to find the truth of the Dionysium is both misguided and completely manipulated. Even the Joker realizes the truth of this. Joker narrates some of his past to Duke and Hal, giving us many answers to plot threads left over from DEATH OF THE FAMILY and JOKER: ENDGAME. Most prominent is the Joker’s discovery of an ancient hieroglyph in the caves beneath Gotham. The hieroglyph reveals a dark shadow, much like Batman — it stretches over the wall, looming over all.

>In Hawkman’s narrative, we see hieroglyphs like this etched throughout history. All of these hieroglyphs – not to mention the cover of DARK DAYS: THE FORGE, which depicted a giant imperial Batman statue – all point to one truth; Batman, despite his intentions, is not destined to be a light in the dark or to be Gotham’s savior. He’s destined to unleash the dark and bring about humanity’s destruction.

>CBR: So, Scott, I know in the past you’ve talked really extensively about how much Metal has been seeded through your run on Batman in the New 52, but I think both The Forge and The Casting have made it pretty apparent that you’re mining from much, much more than that. What other books would you recommend completionist readers take a look at to prep for this summer?

>Scott Snyder: That’s a great question! I’ve tried really hard to make it so that you don’t have to read anything but Metal — but! To be perfectly honest, it ties to stuff going as far back as The Return of Bruce Wayne, and even earlier than that. It ties to Crisis on Infinite Earths, Infinite Crisis, to work by Grant [Morrison], it ties to Greg and I’s work… [Laughs] I don’t think there’s a lot of things you could read that you’d then feel like “Oh, this doesn’t work.” It ties to all of Geoff Johns’ Hawkman stuff, too. It’s — [Laughs. It’s really a giant love letter to the DCU!

>But really, I think it’s just that the prevailing wisdom has always been “it’s always better to go dark” and “scare ‘em into the store” — you know, put the characters in the guillotine and ask “whose head is gonna get cut off?” And I get that! It worked on me! I was the one putting my quarters into the pay phone to see if Jason Todd was going to live or die — though I canceled out my own vote, I voted once for yes and once for no — But I honestly believe, and maybe this is just me, but it has been a really tough year all around. Not because of my politics, which are pretty obvious on Twitter, but for everybody. The divisiveness, the stress, the anger, it’s just been tough. I think that’s why movies like LEGO Batman and Wonder Woman, stories that are irreverently uplifting, are popular. I genuinely believe that it has nothing to do with being escapist, a movie like Wonder Woman isn’t escapist, but it’s also not grim and dark, it feels inspiring and celebratory.

>Metal, for us, is a story about the ways in which you can find yourself in a terrifying situation, the day after you thought everything was going great. You can find yourself in a story that you never expected — and everywhere you turn, there’s no way out of that story. But, you can do that in a way that says it’s going to be dinosaurs and robots and aliens and every crazy thing you can throw in there and have people standing up and cheering and enjoying it until it suddenly hits you, and you realize how emotional it was.

>So one of the big reveals in The Casting is all about the Wizard and the Marvel family — We definitely see a dagger in there with the insignia on it, too. Even though it’s in Black Adam’s colors, I’ve gotta ask: are we about to see Billy Batson’s Rebirth return?

>Yeah, you might! Geoff has been incredibly generous with letting us work in the sandbox that he designed. You’re already seeing things like — that is straight-up the Wizard, there’s no doubt about it, you know? And that is straight-up a dagger that has to do with Black Adam and Captain Marvel. That’s definitely what those things are. Similarly, that’s Plastic Man in the egg. But! There’s something else inside of Plastic Man that you don’t even know yet!

>I want [Metal] to be like that, where you’re like, “Shut up! This is an awesome, I love it!” And then I get to be like “Well… guess what else?”

>I really want that palpable fun where you pick it up and you feel like “this is why I read comics as a kid.” I feel like this mood is why there’s such a harkening back to ’80s stuff right now. The ’80s weren’t so great, but you want to go back to the things that you loved at a dark time to really remember you enjoyed and that you can enjoy that stuff again.

Okay, so being a huge Hawkman and DC fan here's my quick take on this story:

>Pros:

>Carter Hall Hawkman getting attention and being part of DC again.

He's the best version of Hawkman as the space-alien-cop stuff just overcomplicates an already interesting and cool character and makes him just another alien in the DC universe saturated with aliens. So good on DC for finally bringing classic Hawkman into something.

>Cons:

>Bad guys are just going to be typical cliched lovecraftian stuff.

>It's almost TOO interconnected, something I would love to do for the DC universe is connect it more, but it can't be done this hastsefully and sloppy.

>Bat-God wank is becoming a literal thing.

>The writing isn't that good. "THE METAL IS THE DARKNESS AND LIGHT IS NOT DARKNESS THATS METAL AND DARK AND THE METAL IS A THING THAT ALSO THE DARKNESS"

This is boring and cliche and Carter Hall doesn't need his potential trapped in another bad story. Especially when he's used a prop to aggrandize the Batman mythos more. When his own mythos needs to be explored and claimed more.

>So one of the big motifs in The Casting is this idea of Bats vs. Birds — It’s obviously directly related to a lot of stuff here, Hawkman, the Blackhawks, the Court of Owls — but there’s one set of birds that hasn’t been called out yet. How is the Bats vs. Birds motif going to factor into the Robins, or even the rest of the Batman mythology?

>Oh man, let me figure out a way to say this without spoiling. [Laughs] Let’s see… Well, I can say this. We wanted the war of Birds and Bats to be something that goes all the way back to early days of man, and even further than that, to a theological level. It’s almost cosmic in the story.

>The idea is that there is a bat thing, in continuity, in DC history, that to me is totemic and could be as big as the things that inspire, like, pantheons and mythology. Or, maybe it’s older and more ancient and scary than that. So, in the way, it’s this thing that argues that the bat is a symbol of not just darkness, but something that works as a messenger from nightmares. It’s a symbol that Batman has actually co-opted to mean the reverse of that, where he’s taken the bat and made it about bravery and facing fear.

>So this thing is going to say, “you took my symbol and I’m coming to get it back.” This thing wants to show how Batman is actually going to be the lever it pulls with all the alternate Dark Knights to [reclaim that symbol]. Batman thinks he’s a symbol that inspires people to do better but this thing wants to show that he’s actually something that makes everyone too afraid to ever go out in the light again.

>To be really clear, it’s not an “evil Batman” story in terms of Bruce turning evil, but it is a story about evil Batmen where there are these multiple nightmare versions of Batman.
>>

I do like they made Carter a thinker and not just big strong warrior brute.
>>
>>93825098
>So, this relates to The Dark Multiverse, right?

>Yeah. The way the Dark Multiverse works is that your fears and your fantasies exist there. There are 52 known universes in the Multiverse as we know it, right? But the ocean of the Dark Multiverse is roiling, fluid place, where anything you fear or think becomes material and then bubbles back back. But, if something down there decided they pluck the things from your nightmares and bring them here, to our universe, they could.

>You know, if that thing, whatever it might be, could actually get here.

>So that’s the idea. What if this thing says “oh, I know what you’re afraid of, Batman. You’re afraid of these possibilities where you did this to your friends.”

>So we get a little glimpse into what might be a future for Duke Thomas in this issue, and The Joker of all people may or may not even give him his new superhero name. Is there a big future ahead for The Signal? Is that what we’re going to be calling him?

>Well — I would — [Laughs] I’d like to say that we’re making an announcement soon! What I will say about The Signal, or Signal, is that Duke is a character I’ve had a lot invested in for a long time, and there’s been so many calls to get him his own book and his own name and his own story. But, I didn’t want to do it before I felt we had the right platform.

>One of the reasons we put him in The Casting was to show his importance to us and spotlight the part of the mythology in Gotham that he’s actually essential to. So the other half of this, from just a logistics standpoint, is that I wanted this to be a place where I could bring in new talent.
>>
>>93825123
>I wanted it to be someone who I worked with in the workshop, that I taught, who was passionate about the character and had a really good taken on him. Dark Matter is [a chance] for me to put my money where my mouth is a little bit and say if Metal is about the creation of “new,” about doing a Crisis where nothing is old — we don’t go back to Earth 2, there’s no Alexander Luthor, everything is about a new realm with new villains — then new books, the Dark Matter books, should bring in new talent.

>So there will be an announcement about Duke and Signal and all of that soon, and I’m very, very proud of it.

>The other thing I’d say is that i think it’s a really cool concept just in that, Joker is actually really open about it. We’ve hinted at in previous stuff, but, to have something that actually makes a hero-by-day for Gotham is actually really cool. It’s something we haven’t seen and gives Duke a mythology that is brand new.

>Now we can’t talk about The Casting without talking about the roster of art collaborators because there’s really no other way to say it: you’re working with a team of legends. What’s that process been like?

>I pitched the story when I was out in Burbank over a year ago, right after I finished with Greg [Capullo] on our run. It was only really a few months after that Andy [Kubert] and Jim [Lee] and John [Romita Jr.] — while I was working with John on All Star — came in and said, “Let’s do this together. Let’s have really heavy hitting art on it.”

>We pitched the first just using Andy or just using John, but part of the idea in Metal is all these recombinant materials and stories and ideas, so [we decided] why not use three artists to have it be something that says we’re all united behind this event.

>It was an incredibly humbling moment that they felt like they could send a message of confidence to everybody that we all wanted to get behind this thing. It really means a lot to me.
>>
>>93825123
>I have to ask about Hal Jordan, since he’s such a prominent part of the story. He’s spent the majority of Rebirth out in space, save for a few cameos on Earth for guest spots in other books. What prompted your choice to use him?

>I actually just spoke to the Green Lantern writers, Sam Humphries and Robert Venditi, and I just asked what the status of the Corps was come late summer/fall. It became clear that Hal would be back and that Simon [Baz] and Jessica [Cruz] would be out in space at the time. So that’s where the choice to use Hal came from, and Simon and Jessica will come back in when they get back from deep space in October or November.

>So Simon and Jess will definitely play a part later on, Hal just happened to be the Green Lantern in the sector at the time.

>I had a total blast writing Hal, honestly. I had one of my favorite moments — I had to change it because we changed the setting, but at one point, there was a big fight in Metropolis between the Bat Family and the Justice League because they’re looking for Batman and so on. But there’s a moment where Hal chases Nightwing down an alley and the alley’s all painted yellow. So Hal says something like, “That… doesn’t work on me anymore, Dick.” And Dick’s like [defensively], “That actually just looked like that when we got here!” [Laughs.]

>I love writing Hal, he’s confident. He’s like Evel Knievel.

>To be really clear, it’s not an “evil Batman” story in terms of Bruce turning evil, but it is a story about evil Batmen where there are these multiple nightmare versions of Batman.

So it's a retread of the 3 nightmare batmen Bruce fought during Morrison's run.

NTH METAL, SON!

Yeah, that works. Someone shop one of the Hawks' heads on Armstrong's body, and we can call it a day.
>>
>>93825167
Pretty much, but these are all actual Bruces from other worlds.

I'm just glad we finally have something to balance all the Injustice/Red Son stories. If we can get some cool stuff off the evil Batmen I'll be happy with this event.

>it's a "snyder tries to be morrison and ruins something somehow" episode

He should just stick to what he's good at.

>>93824744
There was this one scene in Robin War where Duke gets accosted by a cop who calls him "boy" and he gets all racist about it.

>>93825231
He should have just done:>>93821851
.

I don't think anyone would mind if it was stated that different high level magic items in the DCU were made with Nth metal if it was just treated as "the god metal".

But now we got all these different things connected no to the god sphere where their mythological connections are but to a dark multiverse ruled by Justice Batcarnate.

EVERYTHING IS METAL

EVERYTHING'S COOL WHEN ITS ONE AND THE SAME

EVERYTHING IS METAL

WHEN YOU'RE LIVING SCOTT'S DREAM
>>
And here I thought this metal event would have something to do with New 52 Hawkman and Despero who had recently come out unscathed from Death of Hawkman.
>>
Is Duke worse than Miles?
>>
>>93824772
>Duke Thomas is the key to all of this

Nah it's just the same overwrought bullshit we've come to expect from Snyder.
>>
>>93825598
Too late. We've had Plas show up and Batman including hyper elastic particle along with Atlantean relics and shit.
>>
>>93823566
>The bad side is him taking over every event, being in every team, winning everything, making everything dark/gritty.

so the event is self-parody?
>>
>>93824772
>He’s destined to unleash the dark and bring about humanity’s destruction.

so some impossibly ancient evil lurking behind reality for all of human history has finally broken through, and it's in the form of... evil Batman/Justice League hybrids?

this is like the Cancerverse in Marvel, except Batman is the cancer.
>>
This was terrible. Snyder exposition, everything in the DCU comes from the metal, Duke push, a lesser Final Crisis. Unnecessary step back for Rebirth. Hope it's forgotten about soon enough.

Shit, I remember people talking about something like this 2 years ago. It was something like a Hypercrisis thread, and someone brought up that in certain folklore, the bat was the only one to not choose sides during some great war, which is why it has no friends.
Found the story, at least: http://www.bedsbatgroup.org.uk/wordpress/?page_id=574#friends

If Snyder just left it at "Nth Metal is sentient and evil" then it would've been interesting.

But then he just had to take it a dozen steps too far.

It's got a couple neat ideas, but the over-elaborate presentation of this massive multiversal conspiracy doesn't hold up under further thought, unfortunately.

It's just way too big in scope for what the story can actually support.
