How do you guys feel about magic versus technology in your comics? I'm currently working on a futuristic story, where the main character gets involved in an alien invasion, and has to help one of the aliens protect there homeworld from the enemy, but I want to slowly introduce some magical elements as well, could be ancient artifacts or stuff like wizard or mythical creatures. I'm just worried it might be kind of silly. Need to think up a good reason to introduce stuff like this.
>>
>>93814593
He is probably sleeping, the challenge posts were made kinda late.

For the curious, here is some of the posts about the challenge (if we actually make it). Hope anon comes back.

>>
>>93814674
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
>>
>>93814674
Run with magitek. You can introduce magical elements and if you want to keep the story as being on the tech side more than the mystical one, you can find a way for the magic to be actually some really old and lost technology or just something some people managed to learn how to bend in our dimensional plane.

>>
>>93814674
I have always enjoyed the conflict. I feel like typically what you get is a mutual super-effective situation, each taking the other totally by surprise and hitting it in a way it doesn't have much of a defense for.. magic has a slight edge in being more versatile and harder to defend against, but then tech has the edge in typically being more organized and adaptable. of course the combination is fantastic, but again, usually they adapt each other differently. a mage might posess a robot in the same way he would a statue, which is way more energy-inefficient than just learning how to pilot it and putting in what it runs on.. whereas you can figure out how to harness a given kind of magical energy with science and put it in a raygun, but you'll have an issue getting more of it
>>
>>93817704
love your lines. stabbed girl definitely has a nicer looking face than half-burned girl, in terms of shapes and proportion. Being burned might play into it, but it didn't flatten her face, right?
>>
>>93818006
Are you still with a mighty need?
>>
>>93814674
Just as long as it doesn't turn into "MAGIC GOOD, TECHNOLOGY BAD" then it's fine with me.
>>
>>93819821
I personally dislike when the conflict between them is too extreme. Kinda like what Harry Potter and the Nasuverse suffer, with "oh we are magic and we don't use technology because magic needs medieval era standards" or similar. Why wouldn't you still go with magic while also developing better tech? Brandon Sanderson makes a nice mix of this in Wax and Wayne actually.
>>
>>93821050
so completely agree. yet at the same time, it's clear why one would stop bothering with the other. We have a natural tendency to become complacent once we have something that works. we leave it in place, even if over time it becomes a black box.

I'm still working on my comic -sketching some pages as of now on paper because I want to try something on style- and asking for a scene would be way too much since I got no real canon, so I was just going to give this guy as a guinea pig for anything you wanted to try. sure you can.you have to find a reason other than to "git gud" to keep going.

I keep pushing my comic "Kinematic" hard because I've got loved ones with blindness, they need a voice out there and I find that motivates me to keep at it.

so keep it going anon. the dream is there. you just have to find your fuel.

Do you already have the comic published or is in process?

I was digging around old project files today, and I came across this. This is basically my favorite kind of thing to draw, i guess, some sort of action sequence where Rococo is being heroic. Its too bad I can't just draw this part of a comic, I have a lot trouble getting through a build up, or construction a compelling narrative around such things.

not at the moment.
I've been crafting the world carefully during 3 years. this story is based out of personal experiences.

in it I want to talk about personal self worth and learning to adapt to an ever changing society in the brink of a robotic revolution.

mainly, I've been developing the characters the most, at this point in time they are well defined and can play on one another to get the story going. I just need to execute the story to get the ball rolling.
>>
>>93823239
I have 3 drafts of the first chapter, but each time I complete them and let them be for a bit I learn more about my characters and I end up changing it. but that's fine. its good practice.

>>

Currently working on a setting with proper world-building for once, and starting with the principle that any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology. A relatively standard medieval fantasy world, but wizards have developed a way to transmit information along ley lines, which is easier and more cost effective than regular spells. Structures that look like mobile phone masts are being built in towns along ley lines, and especially where the ley lines cross. They're essentially going from the printing press direct to the internet.
Most of the developments like this are coming out of a city filled with wizards and mad inventors, so it's basically an excuse to have fun dropping in anachronistic tech, like motorbikes and smartphones (which are magical devices, powered by the ley lines).

>If everything goes well for my wallet that means less time for webcomic investment.

Is a schedule of one page per week good enough if my webcomic is going to be of the gag-a-day kind more than an actual lineal plot? I may not get much time to throw more than that if I don't fuck up in the interview.

I'm working steadily on my comic and I'm wondering how to go about releasing it.
>Page a week is a good way of consistently putting out content
>Can potentially harm the perceived pacing of your comic, imagine waiting a week for one action page that takes 5 seconds to read
>Releasing entire chapters when complete gives a more complete release
>Bigger uptaking in workload and inconsistent release times.

What do? It's an action comedy.

i'm back with some stuff. I tried to put a mood on this page, using a sequence of establishing shots, but i don't know if it works well. I read a load of slice of life mangas that aren't about "who's best girl?" but some stuff that rely heavily on atmosphere, I kinda dig that kind of stuff. I want to emulate it in some way, but fuck. It's not easy.

>>93827469
simplify the art? I don't know I never saw your art, but if you don't work full time on it, one page a week is pretty hard to do, except if art is exceptional, or if it's a fun thing to come back to. Look at Whomp comic: 3 pages a week because it must take ronnie like 2-3 hours max on a page.

I'm so glad you're still posting!
I understand what you mean, so I think the fourth panel should stretch end-to-end. The fifth panel can then be moved to the third row, and end with Ophelea (that was her name right?) opening the door. This creates some tension you know, start the next page with that reveal.
>>

You wouldn't leave the open tin can right beside the cat. It's dangerous.

Dropping yourself on the ed like that, with tits that big should be quite painful for her.

The next frame she's in a completely different position, and it looks like she's about to fall off of it.

When did she lit that cigarette?
>>
ok so let's see how many people are willing to participate on the first challenge, if it works maybe we can make more, if it doesn't we'll leave it here
also suggest some themes and we'll vote!
>>
>>93827685
Lol, guy in last panel looks like Rusty Venture
>>
>>93827792
Let's do it. I'd actually commit to something like this and it seems like a fun exercise.
>>
>>93828461
I think themes should be something really generic and easily interpreted in a number of ways, such as "discovery" or "turnabout" or "concealment"
>>
>>93828461
I'm up for it.

>>93828455
My mom owns a cat. He doesn't play with tins usually, he's pretty stupid. As for the position, cigarette lightning, I didn't want to show everything: ellipses, man. you see fall in the bed, next panel, she's doing something else, you can fill what's happening,no?

>>93828525
I had the same impression when I drew him haha.

>>93828589
Maybe not, in france, we have an event called "les 24 heures de la BD" (24h of comic) Where you have to draw 24 pages in 24h. The themes are really specific, which creates some interresting stuff.
http://www.24hdelabandedessinee.com/spip.php?page=liste&lang=en
>>
>>93828455
Don't mind the Bs about "open tins". Have her sit up on the bed while she lights a cigerette. You don't really need to see the motions of her getting one, but like he said, that cigerette just comes out of nowhere
>>
>>93828317
>>93828317
No problem! And take your time, comics should be a fun thing.

>>93828455
I guess you're right about the tin can, but it helps break up the negative space. I suppose this panel can be replaced with one where she lights a cigarette.
Between panels 3 and 4, I can somewhat forgive omitting a panel depicting her change in position just to keep up with the pacing.
I think to really establish a mood like "It's been a long day" or to make a mood piece, it'd need something like 2 pages. But I think it's okay like this too, there just needs to be careful attention to the middle panel.
>>
>>93828659
perhaps, I'm just thinking about the disparate kinds of comics in here. Plus, creative interpretations of such a vague theme might be part of the challenge
>>
>>93828461
Sign me in.
As for themes, I would say to keep them simple but maybe not too much? Maybe I'm only talking for myself here, but I find that very open themes can cause an ironic effect of not knowing what to do with it.

Maybe something like what >>93828659 suggested.

I suggest some themes, please don't bully I'm trying my best on ideas

>Castaway IN SPACE
>Supervillain and superhero in love
>Aliens on the wild west
>Robot pilots a mecha
>>
>>93828589
>>93828659
we could try both since a vague theme would make really different comics and a really specific one could be different approaches, for this one I'd vote for an specific one
>>93828884
my vote goes for aliens on the wild west!
also it could take a serious or funny approach
>>
>>93828659
With only a 3 page limit though it would be easier if themes were more open ended like >>93828589 suggested

>>93828461
I propose we provide a list of genre's, like 3-5 along with the theme. So say one week, you get to pick a genre from the list and then you have to use the theme of the week in that genre. And the list could change every week. One week could be: SoL, Sci-fi, Fantasy, Noir, Romance. Next time could be completely different list and even include sub-genres and mix-genres

Oof, but the pose looks good! Makes sense. Only part that really concerns me is the fact that he seems to be looking forward, but his arm is kind of aimed upwards. So it makes me think that the person he's shaking hands with is probably some muscle-grunt, but the real fear is what's behind him.

Question guys, how do you keep a reader invested in your comic? I saw a thread discussing comics nose diving and it got me thinking.
>>
>>93829931
>how do you keep a reader invested in your comic?

You have to offer an interesting premise that is followed by a storytelling and pacing that makes the reader actually wanting to check the next page, care for your characters' problems and the world of the comic.

There is no real written formula for this desu, or at least not one I can think of. Is just a matter of baiting the audience with each page.
>>

Well I did say I would get into doing my webcomic and so far I did a very rough sketch for the first page! Is more progress into actual webcomic work than what I have had in the last weeks.

Setting is about anthropomorphic personifications having their concepts as jobs, with the Life anthro being a bitter salaryman who is disappointed with her job. The idea is to have the comic be mostly stand alone gags for now and I want to leave Life's character well established right in the very first page so I hope this does the job. Sorry for the potato quality.
>>
>>93833517
I fucking love her face.
is there a personification of work? i bet his job sucks
>>
>>93833638
Oh hey thanks!
CARLOS!
Actually I'm still working on creating more personifications to fill the workplace, never really thought of making one for Work actually. Damit now I have to make it real. Would probably wonder where his job really begins and ends, like in a mid-life crisis.
>>
>>93833517
Nice. I like her face and emotions. Seems like you're going for traditional hand drawing? You could trace over this. It would help clean up your lines and you should use a ruler for paneling.

Also, gramatical error I notice in your 2nd panel.
>You will be surrounded by jerks and will destroy-
should work better as
>You will be surrounded by jerks who will destroy-

Keep it up! GANBATE!
>>
>>93834008
unless you're the one that will be destroying..
>>
>>93834015
true... I do tend to destroy my own life quite often.
In that instance, it should be, "and you'll destroy"
>>
>>93834040
technically it's correct grammatically, but yes it would be weird to combine both "You wills" when one of the wills is a will-be

I would only say that the his newer pic looks a bit more rigid than the older one. It does a lot of things better, but for example the older one had the door feel more "alive" with not-so-straight lines giving it shape, while the newer one is so straight it looks a bit mechanically made. But that is something that can be fixed easily I think, other than that the newer one is a really big improvement and only in almost 2 months.

Yes, practice. I don't feel like I have interesting enough panels or good background experience to begin the comic.

This. We live in an age where information and ideas can be freely shared and easily accessible. Our thoughts are open and out for the whole world to see and are constantly being influenced and reinforced by others.

alright, I think I got the outline done for my 3 page space casteaway slice of life.

On a side note, is it very cheap to have the setting be an alien planet jungle island? Which makes them almost regular castaways I suppose, other than the fact they crash landed with a space ship.

as long as what you do fits into the "castaway in space" theme it is fine, the idea is to also exercise the creativity and see what kind of stories get done. Go for it!

Seems like it'd ruin the whole purpose of being marooned in SPACE. plus part of what makes castaways interesting is the struggle for resources, if you have an entire planet at your disposal..
>>
>>93845031
I dunno, when I read that topic, I immediately thought it means someone who crash landed with a spaceship on some alien planet. What other ways of being castaway in space are there? Drifting outside in literal nothingness like in Gravity? That could be a cool theme if one of the genre choices had been horror but I don't see it working for a 3 page romance or slice of life.

unemployment due to technology, and living with a disability are very delicate subjects that I need to tend with care.

I want Kinematic to be able to successfully hold a consistent thematic narrative. the theme is to "learning to adapt to unexpected outcomes in life" my goal is to present this story in a visually friendly manner that respects the reader.

I want this to be a relatable experience. to get readers to feel like they aren't alone in their daily struggle.

I believe that if I want to execute this properly i cant just willy nilly go with it and see if things stick.

I want characters to act and react to one another naturally so I spend most of my time studying people to get it right.

I can still see something good in everything I made back then, if nothing else just the creativity. Getting better also locks down some of your ability to think freely. I used to be able to make ANYTHING covered in armor, be it plate, exoskeleton, scutes, or powered.. but now I think too hard about how joints work and I just can't

Just make sure you point out the ludicrously low price of automated-produced goods and how the unemployed can still afford those, making it not so bad.. but other things that aren't made by machines, like... fucking.. a house.. are still out of peoples' reach.

Wrong aspects? like highly detail nipples poking through a character's leather armors?

>>93847170
Its an unfortunate fact about the more you learn about your craft. Although the more you draws, the more you kind of get set in your ways. Sometimes people just gets less flexible as they grew older.

>>93847605
Well, those are not bad themes, I can see interesting story coming from them. Although I get the feeling you are thinking too much about making this, in the sense that you are making it your megna carta. I don't think you are doing this in a professional capacity so I thought its better to just have fun, and showing comic off to other people and talking about it. It doesn't have to have one definitive version right off the bat, is what I thought.

Well, so long as you can see the horizon for this project and set deadline for yourself. I am trying to do that as well, so lets all do our best.

>>93848165
Sometimes, just for fun, I will go back to my old stuff, and pick out something really old, and just redraw them, and see if I like it. Sometimes I will add them to whatever I was working on currently, or maybe spinning off to a different story ideas. If nothing else, its just fun things to do when you are kind of drawing a blank sometimes.

Needless to say there has been a LOT of work put into ghost puncher since the last time I posted here

Every boxer has now been designed and created into fully fleshed characters, I've got some people on the team helping with coverart and designs
The story is being written out properly and story boarded as well
My silly idea that came from my fear of sleep paralysis is actually turning into a real thing.
And can I say the fanart I've received is absolutely heartwarming, and chapter 1 isn't even out yet.

I'll be posting some screenshots from tumblr about basic stuff to know if you're interested, and by all means follow me on twitter or tumblr to keep up

The only thing I have is that the mc can't resist Ice cream
>>
>>93850827
For my SOON webcomic
>MC is mostly apathetic to anything, coming out mostly as misanthropic. No patience for anything and is adamant on keeping her cynic ways instead of trying to cheer up again.
>"Second" MC is a sadist who enjoys way too much his death-bringer job, and may actually do near-fatal incidents on people whose time has not come yet just for shits and giggles.
>Their boss is a bureaucrat to heart. Really cold over personal issues because it gets in the way of the job. He also doesn't share important information because "you don't really need to know".

For my story at "idea guy" stage
>MC is a seigi no mikata, which comes with much of the flaws the archetype has (will try to help others even if it ends with her in trouble, doesn't want to kill even if the enemy is a piece of shit with no redemption, unable to really understand somebody else's suicidal survivor guilt because "hey you are alive so you should be ok", etc.)
>Co-MC hides information that he thinks may give away who he really is, which makes others not trust him much. Him being a robot doesn't help on the trust issue neither.
>Mission control trusts people way too easily, which leads to some informations leaks on a few ocassions.
>Squad leader doesn't think highly of people who get cybernetic enhancements when they really don't need them. He is also prejudiced against robots.
>First arc villain hates anybody who acts as a patriotic extremist, and has a very deep hate of 2 countries that exist in the setting. Like the squad leader of the good guys, he doesn't think well of people who go the cyborg path for aesthetics neither.

Thanks dudes I'm glad you think it looks good.

Do pan's videos actually have animation? I've seen some of his older reviews and I've seen his character but I've never seen his character in any video for more than a second or two. The animation method and general structure I'm doing is far more inspired by ZTV.

Also I'm just working on boring resources now so here's a bunch of hands I've pre made for Dupe's model. How exciting.

>>93850827
>Dupe is addicted to nostalgia, junk food and is pretty self centered and anemic.
>Hyla hates all machines and will put people in danger in order to appear heroic or cool.
>CIN is self righteous and believes he alone has everyone and everything figured out. Probably because he watched too many martial arts movies.
>Trype is incredibly self centered and egotistical.
>Tobie Jr was purchased under the assumption that she was an advanced medical robot. But in reality she was just used in a children's ward to dispense suckers. Useless.

>>93857202
>Early pages
>Concept art
>Patreon exclusive art pieces/information about characters, settings, events
>High level patrons can have some minor effect on the comic (designing a character, naming something, having their name mentioned somewhere)

I'm sure that last one could get major flack if implemented poorly but it could definitely work with the right execution.

>>93857151
Your comic has a nice hazy color palette and I like how that machine is drawn. It's nice to see someone who understands line weight. Your posing however looks very stiff and lacks motion. Also trying to simplify faces while keeping realism and proportion will always look weird, their faces look kind of like characters from "King of the hill".

>>93856925
The simplification and minimalism here is great. My only gripe is that the perfectly square panels on a plain white background feels very incomplete. Other than that it looks nice.
>>
>>93858649
>Concept art
>Patreon exclusive art pieces/information about characters, settings, events
Fuck. I've always taken issue with making people pay for stuff like this.

I was hoping there were things that wouldn't feel like I'm keeping content behind a paywall. Figured I'm just bad at thinking outside the box.

I mean I can offer an inside look into my WIPs and process, but I bet that stuff would be boring.

I could offer doodle/sketch requests but then what if I end up with more patrons than expected and can't keep up with it all?
>>
>>93859076
Theres nothing wrong with people paying to see extra content at all imo. You're already providing your comic as a free source of entertainment so if they want some bonus stuff then paying seems just. Its like buying an artbook or documemtary for a game you play for free. Also maybe patrons could vote on the drawing they want out of some given choices so it's not blocked off to everyone when finished but only patrons have control over what it is.

The standard is usually early access to pages from your comic, mostly one week before you publish it (this part depends more on your schedule)

Wallpapers and pin-ups seem to do well too. Also VIP livestreams and special requests for higher ranks.

I would recomend checking the patrono of other webcomic artists to see which kind of rewards they give so you can get a better idea of what to do.

Are wallpapers and pin-ups really popular? That's surprising. What are the most common resolutions to use for stuff like that?

And what constitutes a "pin-up"?
>>
>>93859885
Not sure I can answer about thr resolutions, but those two are thing that I see on patreons like Mary Cagle's and the like. They are low patreon rewards though, the better average are the access to livestreams.

Pin-ups are just big drawings related to a character or your comic that are big enough to be printed as a poster. I think. I saw that days ago but I'm phoneposting so maybe I'm mixing things.
>>
>>93856925
Sexy granny, what are those things on her legs and chest? Tattoos or part of her attire?
>>
>>93859885
For wallpapers, I guess the common sizes would be typical monitor resolutions; eg 1920X1080 (16:9) or 1280X800 (16:10).

As long as the image is sufficiently large and along those proportions (you wouldn't offer 525X476 as a wallpaper size) that should be okay.

If you can call them animation. Pan's just animating like 3 or 4 frames of his character talking in that car and call it a day. And the dude says he want to develop an animated series...
>>
>>93861705
Sounds pretty cool. Not sure if you've already thought of this, but the thing about Battle Royale that really gets you invested is that most of the characters got thrown into a horrible scenario they didn't actually want to be in. If all the animals are in it voluntarely, then you're missing out on some of the most intriguing character struggle of these types of stories.
>>
>>93856447
It's okay, it can get pretty active, but in terms of webcomic content it's just about the same as here.

imo, giving critique on other people's pages or content helps more than getting it sometimes, since it involves you analyzing critically. why some things work and others don't, the importance of pacing, what looks good and what looks better.

we don't abbreviate Madame to Ma'am unless we're saying it directly to the person, and then we don't add anything else. And if we did, it'd abbreviate to Mme but still be pronounced Madame, whereas Ma'am is pronounced Mam.
That's the only error I see!

if only. King of the Hill faces look relatively good and have simplified realistic proportions most of the time. The issue with this guy's faces is all the noses have a super long nosebridge followed by a completely abbreviated nostril zone. They look like gnus or tapirs. Also, no brow at all. I would suggest he study some skulls, ideally with cartilage on them

That's some bogus logic. Humanoid characters are the absolute easiest to plan poses for and find references in order to draw consistently. Drawing complex mechanical structures of your own design in a way that looks overwhelmingly complex but still not just a bunch of random lines is so much more difficult. Especially from different angles.

>>93864500
It may sound lame but I've made good use of Spore's spaceship creator for roughly approximating the proportions and layouts of mechanical creatures in a way that can be viewed from all angles and modified effortlessly. Here was a practice example I did for a cyborg creature's head.

Check out the movie "Virus", the website for "Gorky 17", some of the weird five nights at freddy's characters, American McGee's Alice characters, half life 2 combine enemies, and the fucked up concept art for "Epic Mickey". Also Gurochan has some good threads for this stuff under the name "necroborgs".

Also maybe give "Cabinet Man" by Neil Cicierega a good listen. Even though it's comical is has some nice visuals about a man who transplants his guts into an arcade machine and eats maintenance men. For a while I was planning on doing an animated music video for it with a friend of mine.

Once in a while I draw fanart. People come to my blog because of it and see my other stuff. Usually my fanarts can get notes in the hundreds while my original pieces for my comic or animations get closer to 20-40. though for how little I do that's way more than I'd expect. It's basically impossible to get any original work noticed anywhere online without paying for ads or doing art of other things to garner attention first. This drawing was done in under an hour and got over a hundred notes. Not bad "advertising".

It depends what you do it for. I try to do it for communities that are still vaguely niche. That one is a character from the 2005 game Psychonauts which doesn't get a ton of art content but still has a sizable following. I'm sure if you tried doing art of something like steven universe or overwatch first thing it could easily be missed just because of the constant flood of content. There's a kind of strategy to it. I've also done some fanarts for other tumblr users like ZONE and Bogleech that reblogged them and got upwards of 400 notes just from being boosted by a larger blog. And sometimes I just make weird pics like this from other media that get hundreds of notes just for the novelty or "aesthetic". It's a weird community, it's best to just try a variety of things.
>>
>>93866669
Eh, there's a story in place but it's been constantly changing. I've posted it before so as not to repeat myself over and over here's a basic description

>Fantasy world
>Some Humans upgrade themselves with machines to survive the harsh world but lose their sanity in the process
>These people become known as "Godless" and are the main antagonists
>On the other side of the coin the Gods send an angel down to Earth every 10 years as sort of a way to "reaffirm" their love for humanity
>This time the angel is attacked by some Godless and has her wings removed for some unknown reason
>Some farm boy finds and saves her
>From here on it turns out the Godless are becoming organized and it's up to the two MC's to find out why and stop them.

There's more to it but that's the gist
>>
>>93866998
ok, cool.
>>
>>932866998
Sounds vaguely Angel's Egg-esque in it's surreal tone. Kind of reminds me of the graphic novel "Gear" where a dead angel's wings are smelted into metal to create a sentient machine. Overall a pretty enticing narrative, do you have any artwork done? It sounds fairly epic.
>>

I can't remember anymore why I had Ribbon (and by extension, after she suggested it to her, Mizu) wearing a fundoshi. It just kind of... went with the sarashi. The two together make a neat outfit. Kind of a battle bikini. Something similar exists in Xenoblade X as the hardest to unlock outfit

>>
>>93870819
I'm just starting to stop being an idea gal, but I prefer to do both the drawing and the writing. Mostly because I have a bad habit of keeping everything in my head and almost never writing stuff down on a clean manner.

I wouldn't mind getting an artist for a story I would like to be done in some capacity I can't though, but I would totally go for the "pay the artist" route and I'm poor so for now I only have myself.

Also a friend once wanted me to draw a comic with her as the writer, but we never went anywhere because studies ate her.
>>
>>93870817
>Meanwhile CF is a closeted pedophile

Irrelevant.
The intentions and views of the artist bear no relevance on the legality or dedency of its content. That is what "fundamental principle" means: either it is allowed or prohibited to show underage nakedness in works of art - all of them. Prudishness has not yet defeated freedom of expression and not for lack of trying.
>>
>>93870962
>draw a comic with her as the writer, but we never went anywhere because studies ate her.

Literally how. 10 minutes of writing translates to at least an hour of drawing even if your comic is heavy on dialogues. She could have done enough writing in an afternoon to keep you busy for a week.
>>
>>93871134
She went to study some social stuff and she just never got down to write any scripts. As of now I sometimes ask her about it when I see her and she is now actually rethinking her whole worldbuilding. So yeah, we are just there.
>>
>>93870962
That is unfortunately how it usually ends up, the times I've tried to collab. Just do your best and hope your writing will make up for your art, as you slowly improve it. It's a lot harder improving your writing, for me anyway.
>>
>>93870962
I have a solid source of income so I've been networking with some artists online for a comic I've been writing for about six months now (I'd like to have a solid head start on content before I get the ball rolling), but beyond a few commissions here and there I've never had such a business arrangement before.

Do you think he/she would be okay just being paid by the page? If the site ends up getting add sense money, should I cut him/her in on that too along with the usual artist's credits? And of course, creative differences/time constraints are a factor.

I think it's safe to say that prudishness has, at least, INFRINGED on freedom of expression, and will continue to do so in increasing amounts as time goes on. The fact that all other social concerns have tipped strongly to the side of acceptance while anything relating to visual depictions of the human body gets worse, worldwide. We will have gay dudes having buttsex on saturday morning cartoons before we ever see either one of their penes just.. sitting there, flaccid, not doing anything to anything.

why do you think that world building is so important for stories? Talking about crossed streams I'm not sure if your post was actually meant for the original post, although judging by your question I think it is?

Eitherway how you pay your co-worker depends mostly on how the co-worker works. I follow a guy who is a writer and he says he pays per page, but as in "I pay for some pages and you draw them please". Unless you are dealing with desperate people, most of them won't accept working before seeing actual shekels.

>>93871370

Like whenever something weird comes up in Star Trek and they just have to accept there's kooky shit in space they don't know about. Maybe it's hyper advanced technology, maybe it's made of some kind of arcane matter, or maybe it's just that thought itself amounts to more than we give it credit for, and it affects things outside of your own skull..

I think part of why modern art students and the SJW crowd in general distance themselves so much from and refrain to comment on classic art is because it would reveal the ridcoulousness of their demands to a public that has otherwise accepted them.
Imagine if they demanded the Mona Lisa to be removed from the Louve because her smile "gives credibility to possessive male gaze" or some such nonsense that is considered valid in other contexts. I think people would draw a line right there and create a massive backlash towars the sjw ideology.

Anime is literally rape because it shows scantly clad women and promotes traditional role models.

Whatever you do, don't throw away/forget those ideas. You may be able to work them into another narrative in the future.

As far as biting off more than you can chew, I would suggest forcing a bit of tunnel vision on yourself. Focus on one storyline, see it through to fruition, then allow it to grow. This way you can take things step by step without feeling overwhelmed. In my experience, ironically it's not always the best idea to spend too much time thinking about some big "event" that you want to write because it can start to seem impossible to tackle; how can your words do a justice to the grandiose idea spinning in your head?

Just breath and take things one paragraph at a time, family.

although fair enough games have been more heavily censored than animation right from the beginning. tiny pixelated blood was LE GASP at a time when regular action shows were still allowed small amounts of blood. Only a few sega saturn and playstation games I can think of included the same content as the anime they were based on. There was one Tenchi game I recall... I think.. had original footage.

Me here. Thank you for the input. I think my biggest worry is that the artist will either lose availability or interest in the work. Although in a perfect world, they'd keep drawing as long as the money keeps coming like a good mule, but they're within their rights to terminate the relationship if its no longer fulfilling for them artistically. Then I'm back to hunting for an artist whose style and rates are agreeable.

No.
The first lady has always been reffered to as "Madame president".
It therefore follows that if a woman is elected into the white house she will be called "Madame president" while her husband will be called "Mr. president", with no linguistic alteration being made to refer to their inverse roles. English is a very contextual language.
>>
>>93872057
>the first lady has been referred to as Madame president
she has? how'd I never notice that?
I'm trying to think of any other situations in english where we'd say madame-and-mister instead of madame-and-sir. is this one unique?
also, that doesn't necessarily mean it wouldn't switch around. If a male president and his wife are mister and madame, a female president and her husband might be mrs and sir
implying we'll ever get another hetero president
i actually think the president should always be a man and a woman acting as a team with equal authority, because bickering leads to better decisions
>>
>>93872143
I have always heard it "Mme. First Lady", with the presumed counterpart being the awkward Sir First Man.
But this is now one of those things where I've said it so many times in my head that it has lost all meaning and I can't be sure anymore what I have heard before.
>>
>>93872026
Yeah an artist can decide if they don't want to continue the teamwork, but still both have to make sure there is some sort of "guarantee", as in, where if you already paid for a page (or more) the artist then must finish the job and not leave you there with no pages and no money.

Good luck out there anon. When money starts to get involved things can get a bit rough.

>>
>>93871245
Well, since you are the paying party you can set any terms you like and whether the artist agrees is their business. Theoretically, you could give them a tiny per page salary, while you rake in all the cash - this is how publishers do it.

But, since you are a creative team, the sensible thing would be to openly discuss the matters of payment with your artist and come to an agreement you both feel comforable with. A fixed per page salary + small cut of any received ad money (10 - 20 percent) + boni for any potential sales (merch, publication and son on) seems reasonable.
Also, if you pay him/her over elongated time periods watch out for tax deductions and/or issues.
>>
>>93872168
In my country it's always First Lady (Primera Dama), with no "Mme" before it. Also because of how the counterparts work, we kind of work around the male counterpart being "First Gentleman" (Primer Caballero). In fact that's how Gauthier Destenay was called on the photo with the G7 First Ladies, but I'm not sure how official that is.

Yeah loan words. It's Filipino English. A good example would be the "Salvage". In FilEnglish Salvage = kill, sometimes in a gruesome manner. We had a Martial Law period and people mutilated by the government were "salvaged". And yes, I'll change it to "Ma'am" to "Miss"(she's unmarried)

That's ridiculous. The spouses of heads of states have always had considerable influence but they are not (and shouldn't be) directly involved in political decission making processes. On paper that seems like a really good setup. Hopefully it can be conducted in such a way as well. >>
>>93872658
Actually that is weird but I think it is correct, although in a different context ("día primero" means the 1st of any month, and although it may sound weird, it technically is not incorrect). In this case is NOT correct to say "es mi día primer". If you wanted to say "Is my first day", then you would say "Es mi primer día".

"Primero" can be used in a lot of ways both at the end and at the beginning of something, the same as you guys would use "first". Now "primer" I think is the one that can only be used before a noun.

Unless you explain how magic works in your comic to make it a near opposite of technology, magic is basically indistinguishable from sci-fi tech.
Hell, wasn't the presence of magic in sci-fi pretty common in the 80's and before? I mean, Star Wars, Dune, John Carter of Mars, even Starship Troopers (the movie, at least), and that's just off the top of my head.

the 80s stuff was largely relabeled fantasy with scifi painted on. It's a fun way to go, and it's very 80s in its way. If you ever see a guy toting a sword and a raygun riding a horse with cyborg visor sunglasses or something, what decade you think you're in? yeah man

also i love how she was blushing in the last comic. so cute.

Question:

We've been doing 12-15 page updates every other week which we know is odd for webcomics. But we feel it works for what Boys Land is.

What would the benefits be, (if any,) of posting a page at a time on a daily basis as opposed to our bimonthly chapter dumps?

Thanks for any advices.
>>
>>93874323
>What would the benefits be, (if any,) of posting a page at a time on a daily basis as opposed to our bimonthly chapter dumps?

You get more traffic on your site.

For example let's say you update just once a week and because people already know that schedule, you only get 100 visits (aka 100 readers) per week. If instead you update one page per day, you get 100 visits per day, which becomes 700 visits per week. This is wonders if you have ad revenue.
>>
>>93874426
>>93874323
Although on a second hand, doing big update dumps can outscore the ad revenue if your pages are far more than one per day in total (for example doing 12 pages per week gets more visits total than 7 pages per week).

To be fair here, I don't know if publicity works the same way if you just click "previous" and "next" on the website, if anybody has more experience on this area than me please feel free to correct me.
>>
>>93874323
In your case, the model works pretty nicely. The problem, as we've discussed before, is that your front page always shows the latest page, instead of the first page of the latest update chunk

I have an idea, and due to me being a scrubby writer it'll come off cliche, but I really want this idea to work, so please, I need honest feedback.
So, world were there is just humans, none of that d&d shit.
This world would be pretty bland, had it not been for the humans being able to master magic.
Eventually, a huge black ball collides with earth, conveniently landing near the main human settlements.
It emerges, reveals itself to be a huge ass monster and goes on to do typical Godzilla stuff.
Eventually the humans are able to kill it, but then, the human who struck the final blow to it became possessed and turned into the beast.
And so began a cycle, monster gets killed, person who kills it becomes monster, repeat.
Eventually, they realize that there is no way to truly kill it, so the humans form a society called the sealers and are able to seal the monster into a cave, causing peace to reign if not for a group of people who worship the invincible beast, who want to go out, kill the sealers and unleash the beast, killing it and somehow splitting the power up among them all.
Pretty much power hungry regular bad guys who wanna be bad.
The story wouldn't have a "chosen one" cliche and would focus on the key figures for both fractions, as well as the occasional page dedicated to the beast..

Help me improve on this, please
>>

Tales?
>>
>>93876817
I think it's interesting, although seems some people think of the Tales series when they read it. I'm myself not really familiar with it so I can't give an opinion on it.

As a setting it can work well, but where you really need to outstand is in the focus of the story. That is, what you just said about looking at the key figures of each faction and what not. It all depends on how you execute this premise.
>>
>>93868340
The fertility of the land depends on wells made by Gods that release the energy of the world. A dictator rules over city states and most of the land outside of the city states is wastelands because he closed all of the wells in the country.
>>
>>93877011
Hmm, so various subplots? Or will that seem boring and backfire on me?

Say, and alright this will sound horrible but it's not like i already started on it, the current beast is the king of the sealers brother, and every day the King vista the beast, trying to understand why his brother did it when he knew what would happen to him, his brother tells him that he was tired of being the shadow and wanted the power of the beast, he wants to destroy the society, and especially his "perfect" brother. The sealers plot could be about trying to talk sense into the beast, and dealing with the stress of cultist attacks. The cultist plot could be about the sub leader having trouble understanding her leaders motives for leading the cult, and fear for what will happen to them all after the beast is released, as she feels that the beast will simply slaughter them all.
>>
>>93876817

>>
>>93877213

Any ideas?
>>
>>93876931
RPG series. often has really neat themes about cosmic monstrous shit and the way that fighting it ruins lives over ages of time
>>
>>93877132
Fantasy settings are actually big on subplots, you can even say that Lord of The Rings is an example of this, at least if you count POVs as subplots (Frodo going with the ring, The other 2 hobbits ending with the Ents and Aragorn's whole other journey, what we get to see of Saruman, etc). So if you can make your POV characters stay interesting and make the audience care for them, you are good to go.

So far I think you need to polish your subplots here, because not much in there sounds really all that, how to say, "baiting" the audience.

Also not sure how good is the idea of keeping the beast as a rational being. I feel it kind of defeats the chaos theme it should have with it? I mean sure have the King's brother with the same motivation and all, but make it more as a thing it backfires on him, as in the beast's power basically rewriting his very own self or something. That may be as cliché but a rational beast may not give you many good points, especially when you consider the implication that people may have killed many innocent people who were actually doing almost nothing and were just confused and scared.
>>
>>93877224
ya, a story about a guy's struggle to write a story except he can only come up with regurgitated drivel so he looks to other people to come up with ideas for him and writes a story based on what he finds on an anonymous image board. this one should be easy for you, it writes itself
>>
>>93877104
That's actually really cool. People rarely focus on fantasy ecosystems that aren't just carbon copies or dull analogies. Makes me think of Xenoblade, and how a cruddy god created a shoddy world where ether is of finite supply, and as life draws more of it out of the earth, and gets too complex, periodically it all has to be apocalypse'd so it can all return to the ground

Hmmm, the whole back fire thing is cliche, but I can tell that it's a LOT better than my idea for it.
What if for an opening it starts with the start of the invasion and the humans killing it, their leaders kills it, turning into the beast. And then it goes to a POV of the king going batsbot.
Don't have much after that.

And really, like I said, I'm terrible at writing and don't know how to polish the subplots

The only recomendation I can give on this matter is to read works with a similar theme as yours. Search for books and comics that deal with similar worldbuilding and stories so you get a better grasp of how to write. Maybe even try the Tales videogames while you are at it.

In these cases the best is to learn from other's craft, if anything because at least it gives you an idea of how to do what you actually want to.
