Where would I start?
>>
>>93552577

Fuck! It dies! I am too tired to make a comic.

I guess, I can talk about my side project. Anyone want to hear it?
>>
>>93553319
No.
>>
>>93553319
Maybe
>>
So in today's world, why would you bother to create anything? Are you masochists? Literally everyone on the internet is looking to shit on any and everything they can find. Why fucking bother?
>>
>>93553776
It was like that since forever. But before the internet creators were locked from the entire world and were mocked only by neighbors and relatives.
>>
>>93553776

>mocked only by neighbors and relatives
That may be true but rarely to the creator's face. Nowadays there are literally entire online communities dedicated to finding your works and shitting on them. Why open yourself up to that level of masochism?

>>93553910
I can't name one thing that is never shit on. Even really good stuff has some dedicated team of people who will shit all over it every day. You don't even have to leave /co/ to find something someone worked their entire life to create getting fucking shredded by do-nothing talentless internet beados.
>>
Hey, I'm >>93536759 from last thread, been making good progress and I'll be posting some stuff in a little more than an hour. I was considering whether or not I should post under my real name or a pseudonym, but I realized the pseudonym I'd use is associated with my real name through my portfolio website anyway so it really doesn't matter. I'll be posting under that name from now on. The title of my comic is going to be "A Desert Called Love", working on the first page/title page now. I really need to get around to downloading Discord soon, I'm probably going to need a fair amount of advice on art.

>>
>>93553776
>worrying about what people on the internet might do
90% of webcomics are forgettably bad at best. It takes a perfect storm of awful to be bad to the point where people meme on you daily

>Literally everyone on the internet is looking to shit on any and everything they can find
people who think this don't leave this website.

I post my stuff here cause I'm hoping to reach the point where people no longer hate it, and maybe find someone who enjoys it.
I only really make my comics to pass the time, so people complaining about the quality doesn't effect me too much.
>>
>>93555293
wait, which is it? You make them for luls and don't care what people think or care and want to change until people no longer hate your work and instead enjoy it?

Well, Photoshop just crashed on me and I lost an entire 2 hours worth of work. So much for my self-appointed deadline, literally all I have left from that crash is a page layout. I don't know why I forgot the #1 rule of doing creative work on a computer: press Cntrl + S every 30 seconds or you will regret it. Time to start over and try to have something by tonight, since I promised myself I would consider this page "done" by now, except the page doesn't even exist anymore. Fuck my life. >>93556329
Have you considered not using photoshop, if you don't -really- need to.

For general art purposes it's extremely slow and bloated; other programs like sai or clip studio do not crash nearly as much.
>>
>>93557860
I briefly did, but I'm more familiar with Photoshop's tools and layout. Maybe I'll switch to SAI and just deal with it, I'm getting a little fed up with the performance issues Photoshop has.
>>

Some people out there just want to tell a story, and don't give a fuck what other people think, and don't get bothered by what other people think.

I just downloaded it, seems pretty okay and it definitely runs better, but I have no idea where everything is yet. Also it seems like SAI doesn't have a text tool? How do you guys work around this? It seems like a huge hassle to have to do dialogue in another program.
>>
>>93559444
>Also it seems like SAI doesn't have a text tool? How do you guys work around this?

Have not used SAI in ages so I'm not sure how the text works there.
That's where you use photoshop tho; to add text. Also please use antialiasing, it's kinda bothersome to see so many comics with aliased text.
>>
>>93559316
If miura couldn't do it, nobody can.
You'll just have to adapt the inking.

I'm gonna stick a pin in SAI for now until I have a chance to play around with it. Still having some small issues with Photoshop, but right now I'm mostly just tired, frustrated, and I have this weird pain in my collarbone that won't go away. So rate my sky I guess? I'm putting off figuring out how to draw the characters for until the next page because I at least feel semi-comfortable painting landscapes and backgrounds. Then again I'm supposed to be making my peace with how shitty my art is so I can let it get out of the way of the story. At least my text is anti-aliased.

The shape of the words should match the shape of the sound, rather than the shape of the object making it. All that does (especially when it's this messy) is make it look like actual in-universe matter.
It's okay though, I can tell you don't really have the dexterity / pen control yet to make decisions like that. Just work on that. keep practicing.

Are comics based on your D&D games too prevalent or cliche?
>>
>>93566837
They are as prevalent as any tolkien-like fantasy setting I would say. You just need to give it a special spin so it looks less generic and "oh it's another one of those"
>>
>>93566837
shit son, Lodoss War was based on DnD games. The key is you have to write the story it sounds good even to people who weren't there. You can't leave anything that requires knowledge of that either to get, or to appreciate (kinda like how a lot of what improv shows put out is technically substandard to a normal scene or skit or song, it's just the context of knowing it was come up with on the spot that makes it so good)

Unless of course the comic IS about DnD in which case... that sounds cliche but I don't know that I've ever actually seen a full story that interweaves the players' lives and their game. Like that bit in Eltingville Club, or that Dexter's Lab episode. That would be really hard to do well because you'd have to develop them into legit characters AND make the game not boring (when usually watching someone play something is less interesting than 'being there')

There's a lot of comics that are meant to be the game-as-made-into-a-comic and those are more straightforward but a lot less interesting since they're so predictable and generic.

Not really looking for a fanbase to cater to their every whim when making this comic, I just want to make it for fun and see who wants to read it.
>>

ah well, when you get there, what you wanna do is draw a shape kinda like a horizontal MnM or skittle or contact lens viewed from the side, placed at the eye corners. It should overlap the eye, and you can erase the lines where it overlaps or not, depending

Your priorities are in the right spot. Just letting you know then, it's going to be a "this comic is better binged than waited for" situation.

Yeah I can see some people getting mad if it uploads slowly. But I'm doing it my own pace for right now until I can find a grove. Plus, I have connections in the animation industry online who view my stuff so that can help with getting more freelancing.

Yeah, I wanted to be a pro comic artist, but changed my mind, unless I do a few arcs for fun or something. Feels much better and less stressful having a study income.

Hyla is a human hybrid, CIN is human cyborg, the missing main cast member, Tobie Jr, is an earth hospital droid. Trype is the only alien and is mostly played for comic relief.

I've actually been worried about having too many humans in my cast (pic related is a handful) I don't think they'll be hard to relate to really. Most pixar movies don't use humans at all and are still relatable.

Ohh, ok. Yeah CIN has a complex array of lights under the glass his head is made of that convey expression. A lot of characters have it in universe to communicate feelings among alien species. It's called UVACS and stands for Universal Visual Attitude Communication System.

As for trype I'm going to have some trouble with expressions but she has a mouth and her face can contort like a muppet so it should be ok. Here's an old pic of her where she's scared. She might get some UVACs later on down the line in the comic though.

No and if you want examples go read the original One punch man web comic

It matters if you are artist first.
If you are a storyteller it doesn't matter. If you ever get popular you'll just hire assistant artist anyway.
>>
>>93572765
Oh boy the art is really pretty.

But yeah you need to add some sounds of sorts, otherwise it looks like it's all muted. You can always use fx-less version of the pages as previews or something.
>>
>>93575452
No it doesn't matter, but then you better be able to write good. You could also always partner with an artist too. I noticed that's been really popular with Korean webcomic artists lately.

You are such a naive child if you actually think that art is important at all in comic. It's all about writing, plain and simple.
Let's face it, comic needs writer because artists are too dumb to write anything worthwhile.

All you artists can come up with are just Shonen reject/cape comic craps with unimaginative writing. For god's sake, try doing something new, something revolutionary like urban fantasy comic or something?

Not replying to any post, simply because none of you doo doo head deserves any (you) from me.

>>93578150
I do agree that writing is a very important part if your comic, even more so if it's plot-driven or it has to be funny. But you can't deny art plays an important part, if anything because you will look first at comics that have art that is pleasant to the eyes.

I had a buffer about 18 pages ago. But it's slowly decreased.

A problem is that I made some major changes to the story a few weeks ago, and it made a lot of my buffer invalid. There are a few pages upcoming that I may be able to salvage parts from though.

Typically the problem with most comics isn't making a buffer, it's keeping the buffer long-term, and keeping it if you make changes. I've never managed a buffer for more than a few months myself. I always end up down to having to make a page between one update and another eventually.

See, I never get this. Why do people want sound effects? I personally never notice them when reading comics, and prefer not to have them so I can see mre of the imagery. I just put the sound effects in my head.
>>
>>93579332
I usually don't notice sound effects in professional comics, but in webcomics they're extremely important to fill the gaps where the art fails to get across the action
>>
>>93579332
>Why do people want sound effects?

Immersion. Kinda like why mute movie had text for stuff like "Ouch!"
>>
>>93579332
SFX are such a ubiquitous element in comics that leaving them out seems like an odd and eerily silent choice. It's like if you saw a video of a horse walking without a clip-clop sound effect, you're so used to those sound effects that the absence of them is uncanny, even if the sound effects themselves were unnatural in the first place.
>>
>>93579371
So if the art fails to get the action across, then should they just rework the action in the panel(s)?
>>
>>93579432
Sometimes you can't. Or it's unnecessary to go that far out of your way, because the way you're depicting it is great, or gains something in the process
>>
>>93579421
>It's like if you saw a video of a horse walking without a clip-clop sound effect, you're so used to those sound effects that the absence of them is uncanny, even if the sound effects themselves were unnatural in the first place.

>>
>>93579421
Again though, would you get have the sound of the horse clip-clops in your head, or just have to be spoonfed the effects? Like you wouldn't know what sound them generally make?

But I can maybe see if the sfx can be used to help visuals instead of just to know what the sound is.

>But I can maybe see if the sfx can be used to help visuals instead of just to know what the sound is.

That's pretty much what it is for, really. It's a visual aid.

Take this page for example. The sound effects in the last panel foreshadows something that will happen in the next page (someone bombs the wall to get in). If you left the page without the fx, it would look like a beat panel and wouldn't really make the transition to the next page well. It works as a stinger as well.
>>
>>93579495
What I meant is that the absence of sfx seems like a choice in itself, because people are so used to seeing sfx in comics A lack of sfx often indicates silence, rather than just assuming the audience will assume the sfx from just the pictures.

And then the next page has a sfx for the bomb as well. Of course it would be self-explanatory what happens even without it, but it's still an aid. As odd as it may sound, not all explosions sound the same, which can be reflected with a specific sfx.

>>
>>93581951
because 3D looks terrible when it's not in motion

because 3D takes a lot of work until it becomes good, and it never looks that great

it isn't, inherently, but it's a lot less work.. or at least, it's DIFFERENT work than drawing is.
Now if you carefully drew over it, fixing the things 3d models suck at, like making joints and the fleshy parts of a body deform properly as they move, then that'd be fine. the 3d would just be there to use as a pose and perspective model
>>93582128
also this. you can't do fucking gamu gamu with 3d

>Takes place in this fictional college town
>MC's parents both work at the R&D division of a private military organization
>As a going away to university, MC was given a small piece of MagiTech, which was recently discovered by his parents.
>MC has no idea what it does and sees it as just a neat little trinket.
>Story begins characters are introduced, yadda yadda yadda, MC forgets about the MagiTech.
>Time passes, then flamboyant gay villain tracks down MC and tries to take the MagiTech
>Turns out that the MC has the spell core Immolate
>Spell cores are things that allow people to "cast spells" but are functionally useless without a channeling device, which flamboyant gay villain has
>After a very narrow fight, MC nabs the channeling device and flamboyant gay villain fucks off
>MC gets a phone call from his roommate's parents about the incident
>They explain that the channeling device was stolen by an unknown group of people
>MC puts two and two together and figures out that by taking the channeling device from flamboyant gay villain, his pisses of this group.
>MC's parents send each of the MC's friends each a channeling device as well as a few spell cores and bring it upon themselves to stop the unknown group and find out their motivations.
>Also at some point the main cast cross universes and recruit their alternate selves for their cause.

Bonus lore:
>There is actual magic in this world, but people who display attraction towards the opposite sex have access to it.
>The gayer you are, the more magic you have
>The government supports the gay agenda because they don't want an army of magical people rebelling and rioting
>That being said, flmaboyant gay villain's reasons for trying to take the MagiTech is unknown.
>Asexual people are different in that they are fully immune to any magical effects

Thoughts? I honestly have no idea what I was thinking when I came up with the rules for magic in this.

I have seen a few friends posting their comic in facebook for example, but they do post one or two pages behind of the actual schedule they have on their main pages, so they can get people with "check the main page to see the next strip!" and stuff.

It all mostly depends on what you want to do. That and idk if facebook has some sort of good ad revenue system.

Hey everyone! Just sharing my comic "The Sprawl" and looking for feedback.

It is a sometimes NSFW sci-fi/horror comic.

"An impossibly ancient artifact is discovered buried in the ice, unleashing terror which spans generations. Phantasms, murderous cults and shambling, cybernetic horrors inhabiting the massive, ever growing megacity known as The Sprawl."

I'd say you should either just type it up and post on /lit/ or add a substantial visual element to your work and git gud at handwriting to make it appropriate for /co/. Don't be embarrassed to post on /lit/, by the way; it is a worse board than /co/.

I like your character art, but the page is just not pleasant to navigate with your eyes. Consider having more traditional panels. They can be as complex in shape as your current ones, just separated and with simple, clear lines around them.
>>
>>93593094
I have to agree with >>93593270

The main issue is where the page is drawing the reader's eye.

Your characters are coloured with very subdued tones, but so is the background, which causes them to blend together.

In contrast, you use these dark, wavy lines to separate your panels. These dark, saturated lines are drawing the eye away from your characters. So instead of my eye immediately going to the upper left corner, where I should begin reading the page, I instead find myself drawn to the one large word balloon that is surrounded by a nexus of swirling dark, saturate lines. That's the "searching for a hint of hidden longing" word balloon.

After that, my eye wants to follow the river of dark swirling lines to the nexus to the right where it is then drawn sharply down to the inexplicable use of hot pink for the womans lips only in the next ot last panel and the ribbon in the final panel. Essentially, my eye is being draWn away from your characters, and away from the porogression you intend the reader to follow, this is what, for me, makes the page unpleasant to read. I have to fight against where you've drawn my eyes to read the page.

You could solve that problem, at least in part, by either making the characters darker/more saturated, using more colours as deepand eye catching as the hot pink in the lower right of the page, or alternately by making the background darker so that the characters pop out.

1/2
>>
>>93593094
But another issue is the panel composition. Even if you used traditional panel borders, does this arrangement read well? You've got a lot of empty space in the upper right part of the page, and it's uncertain if I should start in the upper left then go to the upper right, or if I should start in the upper left, go the panel below that, THEN to the upper right. This is because, together, the top two lefthand panels are horizontal with the upper right panel.

I feel like the arrangement of the word balloons is also working against you.

All that said, I like to see experimentation, so don't be discouraged. It's just that there's a few things you need to work out here to make this page work. If you had more traditional panel structure then the other problems maybe wouldn't be so bad. But if you get a handle on those issues then you can get away with being more creative with the panel structure.

2/2
>>
>>93579332
I agree with you 100%. I've seen so many great pages ruined by way to prevalent sfx. If your Comic breaks conventions, this is a good one to start.
Your page works just fine without Sound imo.

How do i make this design better?

Also feel like there is something wrong with the line-art
>>
>>93597098
it's mostly anatomy. Plus the childish face is a little odd on the manly buff body, though hardly unrealistic.
I'd spread his neck out wider, more Cardassian-ish, so the gill slits have more real estate to show from the front.
The lineart itself looks okay except for the places like the calves where it's just sort of erased for some reason, but I get the feeling you aren't quite comfortable with your art program yet, given how the text on the right is unreadable
>squint
oh he's supposed to be piranhalike, not shark? You might consider red eyes, an underbite, and gills that look like piranha gills instead of shark gill slits

Yeah, to a degree. This is a "quest" style webcomic so some things will be reused regularly. Most of the characters are made up of separated shapes so arms, legs, torsos, heads, etc can be saved separately as a parts bank and rearranged similair to using symbols when working in flash. When it comes to simplifying you can see how complex I'm going with each character in the actual comic here >>93568671 The closer they are to the "camera" the more detailed they'll be.

Also usually CIN's robe completely covers his arms and body. The occasions you see his arms at all will be rare.

In pic related you can see how everything except for the hands and mouth are just rearranged for the sake of animation. The comic will have similar methods.

I took a long break from my comic, since i played too much overwatch but i decided to continue my work on it after going to the hellfest, a nice heavy metal festival. I got to talk with phil campbell and showed him a page of my comic. He said "these ladies have big breasts."

>>
>>93602751
I'm guessing "Say that again" is the final speech balloon of the page? If it is, then having it so close to panel 3 could lead people across into the big panel, instead of down the column. If it's Goatee Guy who's saying it, then maybe have it towards the bottom middle of panel 6. Perhaps show more of Goatee, so we can see his body language, instead of just a profile. Should Goatee be the focus of panel 6, and not Lady DD?
Maybe move speech balloon 3b to the left a bit, to make more of a diagonal to lead into panel 4 (and away from panel 6).
In panel 5, move Lady DD to the left and balloon 5b into the acute corner, to lead up into panel 6.

You should work on your line quality, it's looking pretty confident and chicken-scratchy right now. Use long, single strokes to draw your lines, and avoid going over them multiple times unless you know what you're doing. For shorter stokes, go faster. It's still a bad habit and is really bad for your wrist. Plus, it makes your sketches messier and harder to create lineart from. Save yourself the trouble and try to make confident brushstrokes the norm for your lines.

There are multiple series by that title, since it's so generic you can't trademark it
This one is by far the largest, and is done by actual mangaka with real actual skill. They teach useful basics of construction and motion and all that there.
Plus there's stuff like "how to frame scenes to provide different emotions" like this one https://www.slideshare.net/isshinstark/how-to-draw-manga-vol-7-amazing-effectsr
It actually points out stuff like
>Once upon a time, manga consisted of abstract features practically symbols in nature, resulting in abbreviated artwork. The artwork within a given panel was flat, and the compositions repetitive. Today, manga has dramatically evolved, and the majority of works on bookshelves exhibit both a high level of artistic skill and heightened realism. A likely major cause of this development in manga was "space" in the panels, which gave the characters freedom of movement, expanding the breadth of artistic expression.

how, in my comic's style, would you depict ghostly images of someone appearing to provide someone imaginary backup, a la that simpsons where Homer's 'political powers' were confronting Burns' snowman army?
I can't just do 'transparent' exactly, since this is an overhead view and the floor they're in front of doesn't have enough detail, they'd just look kind of dull instead of transparent.

Victor looks for a friend, claims he can bake, is startled by the creepy serious girl. Agatha is a forced to be reckoned.

Aaaaand this is the newest Wilfreda strip.

Wilfreda invited Julian to her house so he can see how her mom prepares her homemade treats. Then Julian does his thing. Poor kid.

I wouldn't really say I'm 'good' yet, but to give an honest reply, while I've gotten to a point were I can look at my art and feel quite proud of it, it also instils a lot of fear in me. I've spent all these years improving my drawing and visual ability with an end goal in mind (create epic fantasy comic universe with stories that can compete with my favourite mangaka/writers), but in terms of writing a great story, I have little to no experience, this is my first attempt. As far as I'm concerned great art with a bad story will always be worse than bad art with a great story.
If I was simply a fan artist, or was satisfied making sketchbooks, life would be a lot easier I think.

I'm using the simple webcomic theme for tumblr, the page click function only seems to work when you post a single image per post, which I'm not really fond of doing because it lowers the dashboard quality, I haven't found a way around it yet :(

So I have characters, locations and the plot planned out for 5 chapters of ~30 pages each but I only have complete layouts and script for chapters one and two. Am I getting ahead of myself? Should I start the comic and see if it develops organically or is it better from a schedule and motivation point of view to have everything planned out ahead of time? Any experiences?

I kind of want to write and draw a story similar to older video games like streets of rage. Main character has lots of fights to clean up the city to rid it of crime and corruption. But I wonder what else would be interesting to do besides just having a bunch of fights. Are there comics out that that do parodies or tributes of the beat em up game genre?
>>
>>93619501
This really isn't much different than your average superhero conflict. Goodguys that fight crime are just about the easiest premises to make up stories for.

I can't think of much to include besides fighting. maybe some kind of analysis of the whole situation?

Is it normal to not feel all that invested in your own characters?

With my comic, I personally feel like there's a lot of potential for an interesting conflict and I like the characters it's created around. But no matter what, they just don't appeal to me the same way a character from a piece of fiction I like does in both personality and design. I feel the need to completely redo my cast into something else, but I'm just too attached to them.
>>
>>93625114

I have one or two characters that I don't like as much, from time to time, and then what usually ends up happening is I get inspired by someone else in fiction and liken them unto that character.. a few little tweaks and suddenly I love them again

Except for the Moors and Jews that had been forced converted and were accused of continuing to practice in secret. Spanish Inquisition also did target proddies, or people accused of being protestants, but there were so few of them in Spain that it was insignificant.
But if everyone in Spain is "officially" Catholic, then I guess they can only persecute Catholics.

As this good anon says >>93625340 try character development, play with them and you may also find yourself changing some bits of their cores so they end up more appealing.

Some years ago I did some character designs for a videogame project with some few friends that later got canned because nobody could program at all, and early on I didn't like most of the villains (which were the guys I had to design mostly actually) because they felt so generic and one-dimensional. Later on I was allowed to do some writing alongside the main writer and then I helped giving them a backstory which in turn gave them some depth, relationships, motivations and redeeming qualities. These characters later turned into the reason why me and 2 other friends are still polishing some stuff for the game while we are learning how to program, so they don't end up in oblivion.

had it explained to him months back that he leans too heavily on copying surface elements from manga he reads instead of trying to dissect their elements and utilize them. It was about the worst he ever got in terms of criticism. He got plenty of praise from multiple anon's in this very thread, but he still thinks the contributors are harsh somehow.

You guys have some gall to pretend these threads are some kind of bully zone. Constructive criticism here is the outlier, unduly rude critiques even more so. The people who actually get shat upon are sunflowers and people like C.F. who actually go out of their way to devalue criticism in order to preserve their own ego.
>>
>>93639586
>sunflowers

>>93639610

>>
>>93639686
>and the only people with egos are the ones who insist all of their advice must be followed exactly instead of just taken under consideration and/or critiqued itself.
You know I get it; this is meant to be a snipe at what I said, but I don't disagree with that at all. Well, except the "only" part -- there are absolutely people who try to protect their ego by deflecting criticism that isn't even about them -- but that's not what I'm getting at.

People who say you have to do something a specific way are pretty rare in these threads. Last one I remember was two years back when someone took their generalized advice to avoid exclusively using grids and made it a hardline "don't just use grids" instead. More common is advice on how to focus on self-improvement like suggesting someone works on perspective or anatomy, read up on color theory, or [like my example] to dig deeper into how techniques work instead of emulating them directly.
>>
>>93639860
It's becoming more rare for sure. And I agree, it's always worth trying to phrase your critique in a way that sounds like you're being helpful, not bossy.
Of course, that's a little harder to do when instead of something specific, you're giving a broad assignment like "go study this" but I know sometimes that is just all you can say. Especially when the real amateurs show up, and they're desperately hoping to hear "just start drawing X longer and you'll be fine" but in reality there's no specific advice you can give, they have to learn the basics first.
>>
>>93640532
>Especially when the real amateurs show up
Everyone here is a "real amateur." Trying to make that kind of distinction in threads like these isn't gonna do anything but inflate your ego.
>>
>>93641013
hardly. You know what I mean, people who are flailing hard, straight up beginners, have no instruction at all and aren't putting thought in. When there's so many areas they need to improve that it'd be crushingly discouraging to actually list them. Ones whose art is still in the 'naive' state.
You have to custom curtail your advice to each person, and people like that need something totally different than other also-amateurs who are really settled in in some habits, have been drawing for years, improving some aspects while letting others wither..

I'm trying to into character design and human anatomy, going for a semi-stylized look. It's going better than I thiught it might, guess going to college for New Media taught me some art principles at least. How do I into anatomy and construction?

This is my inital design for one of my comic's main characters, a dorky mage named Teiman Taige who's already frail body is only made weaker by the strain of using magic. A young initiate to an order or mages who likes to think he's very clever, and he's not entirely wrong. He makes up poems on the fly a lot and enjoys playing chess.
>>
>>93642096
well you've got a start. This is a fine way to block out the proportions, you're just doing it wrong. You have the hands where they should be relative to the hips, but the hips are too high, so the arms are too short. You also have the knees the right distance from the feet, but again, because of the high hips, it makes the thighs too long.
the face is a bit on the flat side, look at some faces and see how the nose sticks out from it. then look at how some peoples' brows and cheekbones and jaws stick out and others' don't
I'll say this, he does look frail and dorky, so good job there. now practice the actual forms of body parts and once you're more practiced, I think you'll be able to loosen up. This is very unloose at the moment, obviously.
>>
>>93642758
Thanks for the advice, but what exactly do you mean by 'loose'? I don't have much in the way of education when it comes to drawing, particularly drawing people.
>>
>>93643150

Not that guy, but basically the pose and the overall look just comes off as very stiff and stilted. Your character's body language can actually tell a lot about them, and they should have a sort of "animation" to them, even if it is a static image.
>>
>>93643150
Well it's sort of analogous to something we were discussing earlier re: lines.. how a lot of people do hesitant lines, a tiny bit at a time, so as to course-correct as they go, and maintain the right overall shape.. because they're hesitant, unconfident, and worried more about tight control. That's how most people start out when focusing on proportions, too. But just like lines, where to get the optimum results you want to make smooth, confident strokes, when actually drawing people you have to relax too, not just think of it like you're carefully building a mannequin out of popsicle sticks
>>
>>93643196
Yeah this. and see obviously this is a design image, not meant to be anything else, and those are allowed to be in stiff, boring standing or T-poses, but EVEN within that, things still look tight and stiff. the way things intersect, connect, etc.. it's no big deal at this stage, but something to keep an eye on going forward.
If you want some specific inspiration, I always suggest anyone drawing lanky guys should watch some Lupin III. The way Monkey Punch perfectly captures the frantic chase-filled movements of skinny-ass 70s thievery is just tops
>>
>>93643150
Whoops, forgot to put my name back on when I switched back to my PC.
>>93643196
Yeah, I agree. I kind of thought a stiff pose was best for trying to figure out proportions. Worrying about proportions is hard enough already without pose complicating things.
>>93643204
I've been doing lines a tiny bit at a time since I was a little kid. Trying to do smooth and confident strokes always resulted in them veering WAY off course, so I stuck to short little strokes that allow me a lot more control. How do I do long strokes without them going every which way except the one I want them to go in? Ugh, art is always the thing that holds me back. I'm just not good at it.
>>
>>93643325
not yet, but you'll get better
it helps if you have a sketch underneath said line, and it extra-helps if we're talking digital.. because then you can undo. On paper though you shouldn't have any trouble making one long continuous line -slowly- that looks good
>>
>>93643428
What I'm worried about most is the possibility this will end up being just another time when I tried to improve my art and finally make a comic, got frustrated, and stopped drawing for a few months until eventually I start doodling again and convince myself that maybe it will be different this time if I try again. This cycle has repeated itself for basically a decade and a half now.

I need to find a balance between my perfectionism telling me I'll never be good enough and just shitting out crappy art that makes people's eyes hurt. I just don't know what that is yet.
>>
>>93643591
oof. Well then it's probably time you take some different tactics from the usual. Something that you don't realize until later was a major help. Fuckin wax on wax off kinda thing. Uhh.. what about fanart? or learning a completely different style then going back to yours?

Boris enjoys a nice sugary big gulp, though I heard about how moth's don't really eat a whole lot at all.

maybe that adds to the humour in that Boris is a glutton?
>>
>>93646016
Yes I meant nectar, sorry about that. I can't take away the habit of using pollen and nectar as the same thing which is actually incorrect, again sorry about it. Mosquitos carry pollen yeah, but their contribution is so small that people even say if they went extinct it wouldn't ruin anything for any ecosystem.

>>93646034
Actually some moths can't even eat at all because their winged stage comes without a mouth. So yeah you can add even more fun irony by making Boris a glutton.

It's not the prettiest comic, but it's neat. And about speeding things up: there's no secret, get to work. I work sporadically on my comic, but when I'm in work mode, I try to stay on my work at least one hour a day. Hey /hyw/, I'm trying to start a webcomic about a three-man team of aliens landing on Earth to research their culture but end up misinterpreting Earth concepts and sometimes causing problems for the human population. (tldr: an alien invasion in reverse)

The issue is that I don't know how to start it. Should the first issue be about be about why they are going to Earth in the first place, or about them actually arriving on Earth?
>>
>>93646666
I was more thinking about getting more story into less panels. I'm not that familiar with narration in comics.
I can't really spend much more time on my comic. Even three panels a week is pushing me more than I'd like to. I don't even have time for watching anything or playing. I use up all my other time for making music, writing, practicing drawing and painting, and sometimes even university.

>>93646667
I don't tag them with their names and I don't ever intend to make money with it. So that's that.

I literally can't do it any other way. Wanting to write books, make albums, paintings and also a webcomic is pain. Not doing anything of those things makes me feel pretty bad. The webcomic is one of my lowest priorities, though. It might change in the future but that's where I am right now. When I get more followers and better at drawing I might put in more hours.
But then again, the webcomic isn't making me any money and never will. Everything else, on the other hand, is.

Having them be three different species could help fleshing them out as characters and emphasizing their differences in scientific beliefs etc. and would be more fun to have them bounce off of each other.
>>
>>93646548
If you're going this simple, have you considered using some geometric shape tools at least for guides, to keep things neater? simplicity is fine, but things like Sanrio at least insist on more geometric neatness

For now I want it to look as if a child has drawn it. It shifts the focus from the fact I *actually* can't draw at all.
In the future I might shift to a cleaner style.

in that case, might I suggest crayon filter?

I try to use the different Paint brushes sporadically. Pretty soon-ish I'm going to have some gifs, though. Probably linked to a specific character but I might use it more often from then on.

This page is great! I think you really captured the emotions in their faces and poses in these panels. But I think Ezekihell's pose is a bit feminine, just the crossed arms and pout. Consider changing it to him just focused on doing a task or something?
Third panel is really cool, I really enjoy looking at how someone designs a room. Good perspective, the focus is clearly on Ophelie, but this one point perspective draws a lot attention away from the cat. Maybe lower the camera angle, so that the cat appears larger.
These suggestions are very minor though, I think it's a good page already.

>>
>>93647259
since the dispute between Harry and Ezekihell takes place in a bar, they got nothing but drinking to do. As for the pose, I wanted more a defensive yet internalised anger for the latter. And the cat, I know it's out of perspective, but I just wanted him to be a part of the scenery for the third panel.

Glad you like it though :)
>>
>>93646666
also. I got quads. Satanic quads. Quite fitting for a heavy metal related comic.
>>
>>93647354
>defensive yet internalised anger
The choice to avoid eye contact for this is really spot on.
I also don't think the cat is out of perspective, I just thought he wasn't immediately recognizable, so that when people get to the next panel they might have to backtrack and go "where's the cat?". But I don't think it's a big deal, it looks good like this too.

What's a good paint tool that isn't Ms Paint? I want to draw my pages and then add the word bubbles through digital editing, but Ms paint is too static and makes it look like shit
>>
>>93649790
Clip Studio Paint/Manga Studio (needs money)
SAI (which is free if you have PC)
Fire Alpaca (which is free if you don't have PC and can't use SAI)
MediBang (Free also on both platforms)
>>
>>93649790
Paint Tool SAI for drawing over it, then use MS Paint for text. Paint.NET is a good one I've found, and it has a text tool too, but unfortunately it doesn't support pen pressure so painting with it is just barely one step up from MS Paint.

tl;dr

I honestly don't see the issue. I was able to follow it just fine. It's pretty unique and you can tell what's happening even out of context. Obviously some vampire guy swooning a girl. The panels are laid out in that way to give it a mysticism feel.

Good job anon.

>Wanted to start a comic with an idea I had
>Begin to build everything to make it happen
>Everything becomes bigger than what I wanted and now is too complicated to even know how to start it
>Maybe is better to switch to a more simple idea to start a comic then
>Now afraid of repeating the same cycle

And this is why I never get to start anything
>>
>>93652882
what are you afraid of? if you thought it up, you can handle it
if you "don't know how to start it" then start what you do know how to start. If it's too big and complicated, then make it exactly as big and complicated as you can handle. Bingo, your comic is now just the size and level of complexity that doesn't intimidate you. It's not rocket science, you can't intimidate YOURSELF with your own ideas.. because they're yours, and you obviously don't think that much of yourself
>>
>>93653031
I guess my fear is mostly because I can think of all the details and elements, but when translating it into storytelling I get worried about the final product not being the simple comfy I was expecting it to be. I know not everything must be perfect on the first try, but still is something I know I need to work on because otherwise I will never get to tell anything. Getting new ideas for more stories as time goes doesn't help neither, I want to work on everything but my daily life schedule won't do.
>>
>>93653141
ahhh yeah, that is unfortunate. learning pragmatism and culling is a difficult part
but thankfully you're doing a webcomic, not a TV show. You don't have to worry about going over time, over budget, whatever, and suddenly BET has nothing to air fridays at 6:30. a webcomic is a muddle by nature, if it was possible to do it so smoothly that everything went according to plans, it would actually behoove you to make things harder on yourself by pushing for some more challenges.
>>
>>93653141
Try thinking about the details and elements of comfiness. I have this backburner comfy story and not only did I write down a million snippets about neat things that could happen around the house or on the job or whatever, I basically wrote a bunch of random words as if a 'tagline' for the title, to always remind me what the mood of the story would be like. and even the conflict and dramatic elements were written with the solution first, then working backwards.
>>
>>93653228
>>93654113
Thanks for the advice anons. I was digging myself in too much overthinking. That bit of having the solutions and all that written down first sounds quite useful too, will give it a shot.

WIP of my one-page test. Gotta add in backgrounds and revise the characters, as well as work on speech bubble placement and design. Wish I had more time to think about panel 2's composition but had to keep moving. Font is temporary.
>>
>>93654767
It looks nice so far. Really like your character designs.

As for panel 2, maybe play with the panels more by making panel 2 and 3 mire connected with each other, make the eye meet Denward's state while the adults are talking so we can follow to their reaction.
>>
>>93585110
I don't think you should connect traits that people have in real life, and have no control over, to magical powers. Unless you are SUPER confident in your ability to write a story that essentially has literal sexual superiority involved, i'd stick with something else.
>>
>>93621103
great page, but on the second panel her upper eyelids are lit, and it looks weird. you should shadow those, and instead light the upper part of her eye socket.

I need help with some grammar, anons!

>do you two NEVER learn?
or
>do you two EVER learn?

in regards to always losing money competitions
>>
>>93658974
I will leave this bit for future references because I'm of the opinion that is better to teach the "why" instead of just telling the answer.

>Never means 'at no time' and is a negative term, used in affirmative constructions (to avoid double negatives).
>Ever means 'at any time' and can't be used in affirmative sentences. Ever is used in negative sentences, to express a doubt, or to ask a question.

So I would say your option here should be "ever"
>>
>>93658974
>>93659152
Although take something into consideration here too; is your character someone who is worried about proper grammar? It can be nitpicky but sometimes a character can reflect some stuff of their personality and the like by not talking as correctly as someone with an English degree. Especially if a character is using a second language!

Just some food for thought for the future. You can play with grammar as much as with any other element in a comic.

"Ever" it is.

>>93659404
That's a cute character study, I like the poses a lot.
>>
>>93592433
I agree with this, though there's also another thing that stops webcomic artists from improving imo.
Since there are a lot of artists thinking of (or already) working on making a webcomic, it's still some kind of safespace because 'muh original story with original characters!!! It's my comic that means I can do what I want!'
I'm not solely talking about amateurs, webcomic artists with more experience also tend to have an attitude like this.

>>

>>
>>93655707
Considering most of the time magic powers are the result of being born from the right people or something (even IF study is still involved), it would be right in line with the 'born that way' concept
however since it's much more accurate to say 'turned that way by some environmental factor we haven't quite pinpointed yet but probably hormonal in nature', you're right. it's not a good connection. What's more, it's too subjective. In real life people change their minds all the time, especially about things that are literally defined by appetite.
>>
>>93658974
Technically both correct, but do you ever is how you'd normally say it. There are several ways to ask that kind of critical question, one is staying all positive, the other is asking about a negative.. but even in the negative, you'd more likely use "don't you ever?" rather than do you never
It's not even a matter of grammar, it's about common parlance and the way people repeat what they hear.
>>
Are once-a-day updates still the best schedule? I'm gonna try to put out big chapters once a month or two. Yes/no?
>>
>>93660431
I think some of the reason for this is that some critics will ignore personal choice when handing out their critique, attacking part of what makes it unique and making suggestions that would serve to homogenize it. Knowing that defending your personal choice will get you in trouble is frustrating. The important thing is that it WAS a choice, and not just some random shit you did without thinking
>>
>>93661282
It's best to split up your chapters. Give us an update once a week at minimum

>>93661282

>>
>>93661311
Haha, you have a point. I agree on both sides, because I do know (and experienced) artists pushing their own preference too hard without being open for critique. But it's also true that there are critics who criticize everything that's not their taste too hard.
In my personal experience, I received some harsh critique from a hyw anon (who ended up pushing his personal taste on me), and even though I couldn't use much of the critique it did help me with my paneling for example. Sometimes you just need someone to open your eyes so you can look at your own work objectively.

Anyone have any advice for writing a script?

I wrote the plot outline and wrote out a summary with some paragraphs and am ready to transition to the "next level". Im guessing after the script are character designs and then page layout (this is all for a short comic)
>>
>>93622782
To tell a story that impacts someone in some way, whether that's just as an entertaining distraction for a short time, by stirring up an emotional response in some way, or maybe, just maybe, imparting some knowledge that a reader can take out of the experience and apply to their own lives, doing for others what some of my favorite media has done for me.

But that's silly, I probably won't ever get as far as that last one.

Be sure you have a setting you can work with, a beginning and a plot. Make sure you have a plot you're satisfied with, because if you don't you'll keep changing it and it'll mess up your story big time.
Write and design your characters based on your story's setting and your plot, and make sure that the most important characters in your story acknowledge the main subject your story is about. Ie. if your story is about a shop that needs to be saved from being bankrupt, let your characters (main chara's and villains) have knowledge about said shop. Your characters need to be related to the main subject in some way, and they'll need to have an opinion about it.
If you know how your story develops and how you (I mean you personally) would move/grow/behave/change towards the plot, then you'll be also be able to fill that in for your characters.
Absolutely don't rush into the process and get down to writing all these awesome action packed/dramatic scenes you have in mind; these will all end up being loose scenes with little to no relation to your story's subject at all and you'll get stuck writing your comic.
>>
>>93662239
