I double-dog-dare you to keep this thread alive.

Triple dog dare you to actually make a decent thread for once.
Stop posting your art prematurely. It literally takes away the buildup anxiety that'll actually push you to finish the fucking thing, and rob you of a lot of the good feeling of releasing it to the public.
Nothing I'm doing has anything to do with brick hallways but I feel like it's one of the easiest paths to learning depth. First two were rough sketches. I know that consistency of the spaces keeps it from being shit, and I just have to keep working on it as well as figure drawing.

Here's something I inked last night.
I dont have anything yet since im struggling to draw backgrounds. I might as well just stick to /i/.....
I guess this is more fitting for this thread than the other one.
Still working on this, the general view of the setting of a webcomic I'm working on. Now I'm going to draw over it.
>>92492416
Style is almost Minecraft-esque. Will the characters be as angular as this?
>>92495032
Nop. Just the architecture that is related to ancient times.
Characters look like this (or worse, given that I'm not good enough to be consistent half the time). A mix of old fashion and contemporary.

i wanna make her really sporty despite her having a stocky body and stubby legs
>>92488205
I'll try but I won't make any promises.
Check out my art, guise.
A boy falls in love with a girl. He is mysteriously gifted with her phone number. He calls her and finds out that she likes him as well. But the next day, she doesn't remember the confession. The girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who likes his own alternate self. Hijinks ensue as the two tell each other their darkest secrets to conquer the hearts of their other selves.

>>92491054
This is genuinely cool but is it going to be coloured? The busy-ness of it is a little full on when it's in black and white.
>>92501219
Also some shading practice i lost
>>92501219
i was gonna say you got worse between 4th and 6th grade and then I realized the flashback was for the characters not you
animated this today, first time using flash and first time animating, i was always more interested in animating than drawing, i think i overdid the frames tho (69) so it almost looks like a motion tween at the end
>>92501601
i think what bothers me about the way this looks is that only a few parts are moving at a time
i think you can achieve a much better overall look by doing a lot fewer frames but redrawing the whole eye each frame, and with more exaggerated and eased movement
only the pupil, inner iris (if you were to draw one) and the shine should move, the outer iris I don't think should be moving or being redrawn at all. layers are your friend, and I think that will help give the eyelid a more believable feel.
the way it looks right now, it doesn't feel like the eyelid is on top of the eye and moving up out to reveal the eyeball, but instead the whole thing feels like one abstract shape morphing
>>92501578
Worse how
>>92501601
If your gonna wide-eye it, then move the bottom also.
This is a little clip of my first attempt at making a longer animation, well at least longer than the low frame loop gifs i usually make
when i finish it i think ill use it as a little introduction video or opening to one of my webcomics
im keeping things as simple as possible the next part im going to animate is the orange guy running so i can use simple parallaxing and tiny animations for the rest of the video
it should end up similar to this if i do it right
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x16krk2_nano-x-sound-holic-together-as-one-rockman-sub-espanol_music
im also making more frames to animate the wings of that beetle at the endi hope i converted this to webm right because i had never tried it before
>>92488205
how does one begin drawing comics? i want to draw a running thing of my own characters just for uploading to tumblr or dA but i dont want it to suck or be terrible
>>92501899
>>92501839
yeah, i'll practice more, redraw it, and post it again tomorrow, ty for the reference
welp i did not know 4chan can recognize transparency in webms when i opened it in chrome t gave me a black background, clicking on the filename should make it look alright
anywaysat least this just gave me a new idea for a bit more intersting background i'll upload that later instead of reuploading this one
>>92501987
>I don't want it to suck or be terrible
If you're just starting out, you have to face it that whatever you make is going to suck. Realizing that is the first step to self reflection and subsequently improving your craft

The criticism in these threads is so wildly inconsistent it's no wonder why nobody posts in them anymore.

There's a few assholes in these threads that just say mean shit lately. He can't tell you "how". He just wants to shit on people because he had a bad day.

Or the asshole up top telling people to second guess their art as if they haven't for fucking hours already.

Tbh I didn't really expect a response, I was trying to call their bluff. Either they would respond with a criticism I would put into consideration or they'd just not respond because they didn't actually have a point to make.
If I had to look at it myself, I'd say:

They're not wrong in a sense though. If you talk about your ideas or post your content it's proven that you can get enough satisfaction from WiPs to feel like you're done and not want to continue. It's more true for stories or comic work but it's still true for art.
You're better finishing a piece and setting it free. Unless you're trying to get insight into character design, a portfolio piece, or you have consistent anatomy problems someone can point out, most improvement you're going to make will be your own. Not anything anyone here says.
I use the thread to dump tips and occasionally post stuff to keep it going.

What are you expecting other people to give you here? They're typical practice. The point is to do these things a lot then use what you got out of it to make art.
>>92509923
That's not gestures.
I have characters that people often commission me to draw because they like them. Whatever. It's money. It's often wildly out of character and usually porny. Also whatever. Occasionally I'll get people that seem to think that I like to draw my characters doing these ridiculous things and want my input into their fascinating ideas or want me to write dialogue for their scenarios "Since I know the characters."
I don't want to turn my money fountains away by telling them I don't like their ideas. How would you deal with these situations with tact?

>>92511317
I assume you do lots of things with these characters outside of commissions - draw a clear line between your official work and commission stuff. It's kind of tough if you've already set a precedent for wacky porn stuff - I dunno, it depends on how much you want/need the money, really. If you have room to be picky, maybe politely decline some of the more "out there" stuff and stick with stuff that's at least somewhat in-character. Though it's tough to be a prude when you're already doing commissions for this kind of stuff so honestly if you've dug yourself too deep already I'd just grin and bear it.

>>92507941
I'll try, but it's not like they're going to look all that different. I've decided what these three look like already, with the facial differences (nose and eyes are similar, but not the jaw, the chin or the eyebrows, or even the eyes actually), but I'm not talented enough to make them really consistent AND with actually different facial features, my style is a lot manga-ish and that means that I have a simple style, and a more cartoonish design, with more exaggerated traits, is out of what I want for the comic. I'm a very limited artist, but I promise I'll try to make them distinguishable.
Here's a dump of "how to art" stuff.
I haven't looked at it in much detail so I don't know how shit/good it might be, but I might as well bump the thread with it.

Now that you have the gesture stuff down, work on translating that into a finished drawing without losing any of the energy. As a general note on references: get creative with where you're getting them, everybody using the same sources is probably unhealthy in the long run.
>>92514149
All I can suggest is being careful you don't make the design too complex as you go along. Looks great otherwise.
>>92517685
The backgrounds work perfectly the way they are. The only thing I see is that center walkie-talkie, which has been stylized so much that it's kind of grotesque. Everything else is aces.
>>92488205
This thread would be more alive if it was also a Donut steel thread. I can't draw, but I'm trying. Should I post my art anyways?

>>92518884
Well alrighty then. These are just a quick few doodles that I've been doing here and there. Trying to work on eyes and faces.
>>92518980
A good piece of early advice is to try being less careful when you draw, worry more about carving out a shape with lighter lines. You're going to make a lot of bad stuff, but you'll also learn to trust your hand more and eliminate the middleman between what you're thinking and what gets on the page.
>>92518039
>>92518195
>>92518571
ah! okay, cool! thank you!
should i tone down the angle-ey ness of the walkie talkies, then?
(cool art by the way, black and white ink person)
>>92519155
So you're saying that I should worry about figure drawing first. Such as getting the actual model down instead of putting in detail?
Would you be able to give an example?
>>92519573
I think that top corner's the only problem. It's kind of flying out into space. The other walkie-talkies are fine.
>>92498570
read it, pruddy gudd but the updates feel really short, almost lackluster
>>92519833
More just getting comfortable with drawing altogether, since that's the first thing you should tackle. Your lines are thick and stiff and it's obvious that you're being really careful about what you're doing, because you're new to it, only you should really loosen up and let your hand feel its way around what you want to do. Like someone said earlier, it's a really hard thing for somebody to do when they haven't been drawing for a while, because at first everything is going to look like total shit, and your brain will be telling you that you aren't getting any better so the whole cycle shuts down and people quit.
Since you're just starting, focus on what's fun, but push yourself each time you go to do something. Being good isn't nearly as important as getting better. Doodle fast and loose and don't be afraid to look up something if you need to know what it looks like.
Most of it you just have to learn through sheer experience and paying attention. If you ever need to know what you should work on, it's usually what you don't want to.
slightly-angled perspective. Angled at neither the face nor the finger, but more the wrist.
Someone tell me what I could be doing better with this? Is the other arm overcompensating the depth with its smallness?
>>92518980
Think more about consistency between the pupils, if the pupils are wonky then it'll be one of the first things anybody notices. Some of the eyes, the very way you drew them also seem to be pointing in different directions. Lastly, keep the sizes of the eyes consistent as well. For that pair where you seem to have redrawn over the left eye a few times, that eye is way smaller, which may be trying to create depth but I don't know if that's what you were going for.
And is that supposed to be Scaramouche on the bottom?
>>92521712
I'd recommend getting a big mirror to act out the pose in, so you can compare it with the drawing and figure out why they don't look similar. You need to get more familiar with the different parts of the arm and their basic shapes.

Here's something i was sketching last night and attempting to "color".
I have absolutely no idea where to go or begin with coloring. As it may be obvious, i just kind of chose a random set of colors to work with. For tones, I tried to avoid doing greyscale shades and, instead, chose colors that were inherently darker or lighter. Does anyone have any tips for coloring? Or maybe you have a guide / resource on color that has worked well for you?
Obviously there are a lot of other areas I need to work on, but coloring is always a weird thing for me.
>>92535281
Is his head supposed to be on fire, or does it just look that way?
Colouring is tricky; it's why some people start off in greyscale to figure out the values and to define the forms and lighting.
I'd suggest starting by using the pink and the dark red (as the two highest contrast colours) to place the shades and highlights first.
Take a look at ctrlpaint.com and the video library. There are dozens of tutorials that may help with digital art.
>>92535521
> Is his head on fire
I know right? Just looks that way; I was playing with colors and thought a fire theme might be fun to try.
>Colouring is tricky; it's why some people start off in greyscale to figure out the values and to define the forms and lighting.
Yeah, that makes sense. Whenever i draw from life i always do grayscale as well to help manage the complexity.

No, he's absolutely right. When you post something early, like a storyboard for a webcomic, an idea for a character, or a half-finished drawing and receive props for it, you're triggering your brain to feel satisfaction for your project, which in turn robs you of the drive to see it through to the end. If you already got complimented on your art or your writing, why bother finishing? Laziness begins to set in, and unless you have a strong work ethic or a deadline to complete, it's all too easy to coast on the satisfaction you've already received.
Mind you, this is different from, say, posting something early because you need criticism or advice on HOW to complete it. I mean just posting like, a step-by-step preview from sketch to color as it's being worked on for the sake of posting it. I can tell you first hand I began to lose interest in writing scripts for my webcomic when I started sharing it with my friends. I got a few good ideas out of it, but I began to lose interest in working on it. Once I learned that this was a thing that happened, I began only sharing story info with a single writing buddy for advice or input, and then keeping the rest close to my chest. Since then, I've reignited my drive to finish this thing!
TL;DR it pays to have patience, Anon.

I'm liking the silhouettes, I'm already intrigued. From left to right, I would say...
>A crystal or plant geomancer girl
>Spacey fragment girl that can either blow up and reconstruct herself on a dime, or is simply made up of fragmented pieces
>Cool smoker guy who thinks he's above everyone else
>Asian Oni swordswoman. (Probably not, but the horns with the helmet makes me think samurai)
>Techy oily scarecrow.... Dude? Kinda hippy for a guy, but it could just be a coat.
>Smokestack Marvin the Martian, my favorite of the bunch. Likely the hotheaded ''kid' character
>Giant robot camera man. Peeping tom maybe?
>Stand user Joan de Arc with her family's guardian armor

Proportions are a little bit off, but I like the concept you have going. Keep studying anatomy, but you should also take some time to study how animals actually look when they smile, like dogs and mice and such. Just googling "Happy X" should give you a good example. I would say you're almost ready to start on your project, but the weird off-perspective cartoony faces on a semi-realistic depiction of an animal really takes me out of the art.
I forgot to design watchmen for my fantasy town.
>>92515522
sounds like an excuse.
>>92579337
And the main character.
Now back to working on the actual comic page.
>>92491054
The border is real fuckin neato. I dig it, anon.
>>92501530
finger guns hey you should do more
I'm trying to get my bearings with pencil again
>>92581385
And this is a wip just because i can't figure out what to do about the background. Wanted to keep it abstract- can't get anything to work aside form the gradient though
Sketch of a demon character of mine. Not a super interesting pose, but I couldn't find any chill sitting references, so I kinda just winged it.
Working on more, mostly trying to find good reference material though.
>>92581549
You got anymore of her?
>>92581549
>>92581903
...just a basic scribble of what I'm working on.
Trying to draw more of her and my original stuff in general. Been slackin' a lot lately.
Redoing the arms, so the right one's being redrawn to come forward rather than go back. The human body is screwy, but I feel like life drawing's helping me slowly understand some of it.
>>92581432
Damn, that looks gnarly. The simple background is fine, especially because the character design itself has a lot going for it.
My design skills are definitely not up to snuff, but perhaps if you wanted something more stylish, you could make the gradient more choppy? Like a splatter effect or summat? I dunno- times like this are when I like to experiment.
You're doin' awesome shit, Anon.
>>92580888
Cool, duder. My love for Mouse Guard conditions me to adore virtually any rodent with a weapon. Keep it up, man!
>>92570272
Oh, wow! This is adorable and smooth! Animation is a bitch and a half- I respect you for attempting it at all, let alone teaching yourself as you go. I can barely get still images right.
I wish I had any knowledge to give you. Just keep at it, friend. Show more as you go, if you can.
>>92564543
This is kinda cool- almost seems like a exercise in diffusion. The perspective is a bit skewed, but it still has a simple look that works. Just as a general suggestion: the fuzzy, scratchy lines on the river and grass clash with the thick, solid lines on the trees- cool stuff though!
>>92558441
I got little else to say other than "pretty fuckin' cool". Thumbs-up, duder.
>>92581903
...oh, I also have this, but...eh. I'm not super happy with it. It's the first 'character-sheet' kinda thing I made of her when I first thought her up. Kinda toned it down a bit. Made her less THICC went easier on the spikes- more human proportions. Maybe that's more boring, but I'm still kinda learning anatomy, so exaggerated bodies aren't something I can really sell well.
Always happy and willing to take suggestions, though.
>>92582342
>>92581549
Whoa nelly, thats a whole lotta demon hot ass!
But yeah, i feel the updated version looks better, and cleaner, obviously. Although i do like the arm spikes/claws, maybe make them retractible?
>>92583435
Yuh! I like booty as much as the next guy, but I suppose this is just an exercise in restraint.
And yeah, still toying with it, retractable spikes might be a good way to handle it. The claws are something I'm incorporating for sure.
Thanks, Anon. Just gotta draw more. In general.
>>92583984
Art is a lot about practice, so drawing more is always a good thing!
And on the matter of butts, i feel both designs manage to hit a point where its tastefully sexy (as in 'its there, but its very clear that its not the point of the character', not entirely sure how to express this, but i hope you get the idea).
Best of luck man.
Really wish I could put more work into this, but i've only got 15 minutes until work and wanna bump the thread with something
>>92572036
I don't have any recent drawings so here's my blog
niiikooooo.tumblr.com
>>92584222
Yeah. Still working towards that elusive goal of being able to draw convincingly from imagination...but for now, I take solace knowing that if I have a bit of reference material, my stuff looks (or at least feels) way better than it did at the beginning of the year, like so: >>92582342
...and yeah, thanks man. Good to hear some kind words back. I don't really post here ever, so...it's good to hear. I'll keep workin' at it!
>>92575865
Is there a real reason why the bulge is there or is it really supposed to be a stiffy?
>>92582159
Thanks- I think it's just a challenge of just making it radiate right and step down the red tones into grey without making it too sloppy.
I'm personally a fan of the monstrous pop-eye like arms but I'm a slimeball who likes that kind of stuff.
Unrelated, I drew someone's OC from here before and thought it worth posting again.
>>92586125
It's an ambiguous bulge. I've checked with a lot sources, they mostly say it's not a boner and if they do call it that, it's in jest.
>>92586125
>>92586972
Also the bulge is there for a pun
Marimokkori is an anthro mossball, so his name comprises of marimo (the word for mossball) and mokkori (bulge)
>>92586131
Yeah. It's a difficult middle ground to get at. Backgrounds can really be an exercise in design sometimes. Less IS more, though...so perhaps the gradient suffices?
...and yeah, I like the big, broad arms, too. It has a clear, physically imposing visual, but...yeah, I also don't want it to come across as a crutch while I learn more proper anatomical forms. Still experimenting, though...perhaps there's room for both. An anon suggested retractable spikes. Perhaps if they're retracted the arms thicken up? Who knows!
Also that's a cool-lookin' fur-demon-beast. I hope whoever that was for was happy!
>>92587248
Thanks! Don't perceive strange anatomy as a crutch- there's ways to make it work! One thing to watch out for though, is making sure there's a wrist. I know its >WOW but blizzard's male characters with their treetrunk arms still have articulation. Ain't no thing but exaggeration.
im just going to keep art dumping dont mind me
>>92587453
and this is the first thing in a dumb idea i had- i made some panel flow oopsies but i didn't catch them soon enough and don't want to expend the brain power to fix it
>>92516244
good shit

what happened to the webcomics thread?
anyway heres my newest page, what do you non webcomic artist think about it?
heres a video of me making this page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT8TNQcc1QY
>>92584552
This is pretty good
Only semi-recent not-fanart/memethread thing I've got; a wee lass by the name of Ahreen. As the middle child of three sisters, on the verge of puberty and having recently experienced something rather unpleasant in her life, she's a bit of an emotional wreck who just kind of wants to be left alone. But she could probably also use a hug.
>>92529661
I wonder how much this would cost in real life
>>92592271
Thanks anon
>>92594683
It'd be cool if you posted more. You have a good look and style going on.
bump
>>92594703
I really appreciate that anon. i'd post more if I had the time,
bumping the thread with something I finished a couple days ago while I work on something new
bumping with a really old sketch that I decided to mostly line
I wanted to follow the meme that carol is a better sister to all the younger loud siblings than lori but it looks like im 6 months too late for that
>>92597755
Spooky
Based on the new Dark Souls DLC.
>>92491054
Took a while, but here's the colored version. To be frank, I rarely color my images...
>>92581176
Thanks anon! I'll probably incorporate more like it in future drawings.
>Be me this time last year
>Be 18 year old out of high school needing something to do
>Send email to Nickelodeon asking them if I could intern
>They tell me internships start for matriculated juniors
>Be me now
>Applying in another year
Should I send them an email now asking what they're interested in for interns (as in technical drawing skill vs. good grades vs. understanding media history and storytelling) or is that stupid? On one hand I don't think it could objectively hurt me but on the other hand I don't want to seem like I care too much. It's not like the secretary who probably gets a dozen emails an hour from literal children remembers what I sent from last year either.
>>92600809
>but on the other hand I don't want to seem like I care too much
Nigger employers want the people who care the most. I've seen people with somewhat lesser talent get hired over more talented ones because they wanted the job more.
Communicate with as many people as you can. Collect as much advice as you can. And don't forget to "sell" yourself.
>>92593789
Spooky

Do you make these yourself?

Nice artstyle, what's the story behind her
>>92536341
That's spooky and adorable. What's the story behibd her.
>>92527382
What's the dynamic between these two?
