The Best of Wonder Woman

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Good afternoon, folks. Or morning, noon, evening or night, depending on your time zone.

With the Wonder Woman movie finally coming out next month which I will not be seeing for various reasons I think it's high time I share my love of this character with the board.

And where better to start than with her most famous and acclaimed run?

This is Wonder Woman #1.

One of the weirdest trends ever since Gadot's casting has been to say that the Amazons would be Greek, and therefore olive skinned with brown eyes.

But Amazons are pretty specifically NOT Greek, as we can see here. They weren't just Greek women that lived on an island. They're a completely separate race.

However, if there were a DC Ultimate universe, they probably would make the Amazons Greek. And probably also do that "cut off the left breast" thing.

Now I love Tatjana Wood's coloring, but this is probably the only thing she's done that I'm not that big on. The colors are a little too dull for Wonder Woman. Look at COIE and New Teen Titans for coloring that fits Perez better.

One of the classic elements of Wonder Woman origin retellings has been trying to justify the costume.

Personally, most explanations have been as dumb as that one explanation for Power Girl's boob window that people always post.

IMO, the best explanations for this kind of thing are "because that's how it is, fuck you"

Absolutely. Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka, Wonder Woman: The Circle by Gail Simone as well as her other collections, Golden Age Wonder Woman (by far the most fascinating Golden Age comics), and the New 52 run.

Sadly, a lot of her better material from before Rucka are not yet collected. I really hope the movie brings more stuff but I don't see much solicited...

Everything is controversial for Wonderfags.

Honestly it's like Perez and Rucka's first run are the only ones most agree are good, and that the 90s and right after post Infinite Crisis are bad.

Also lesser known fact: officially Angle Man's creator was Robert Kanigher, but according to what we know about that point in Wonder Woman's history, he was actually created by Marston or Marston's family.

During the post-WWII era up to the Silver Age, most Wonder Woman stories were actually just scripts Marston had already partially written, and his family went on writing for a long time before Wonder Woman started actually being fully written by Kanigher.

Tell me about it, though admittedly I'm guilty of it as well.

Even Perez's run has started to get some flak from fans lately, though that may just be because it's gaining popularity with "casuals".

It's a big reason why it's hard for people to know which stories are her best, because no one fucking agrees on what stuff is good.

Been meaning to read it for awhile after that big controversy around it. I did read the first few issues when they first came out and was expecting them to be as bad as Sensation Comics, but they were actually pretty good. I love reading about young Diana and there appears to be a big focus on her being wise and caring, which I'm all about.

Also heard they have a really good Etta Candy who I've missed in the New 52.

I actually might read EVERY silver age issue of Wonder Woman this year. When I was 17 I read every single issue of Fantastic Four like an absolute madman. I don't know if I have that level of focus anymore but it'd be fun to see how far I could get.

I think I've already read almost every appearance of Wonder Girl up to her costume change in Teen Titans. They're absolutely hilarious, honestly.

I don't really care for how much backstory and lore Perez injects into Wonder Woman.

It's not the story of the Amazons, its Dianas story. The Amazonian lore should be an afterthought to Diana's own development.

We could have found all of this more gradually.

That's a good point and I think it turns a lot of people off from this run. I think the intent was that it's much easier to show a reader what's cool about Wonder Woman's mythos than it is to show you her full character.

But it's definitely a Perez trademark to show all that history and mythology. I didn't like it the first time I read it, but on subsequent reads I do like it because I already know where they go with the character.

I actually started reading Wonder Woman with Azz run.

It got me interested in her previous runs and so I started with Perez. At the time of first reading I really loved it, but with every subsequent readings I started to notice a trend that Perez started regarding all things Wonder Woman.

>Mainly Diana not being all that well developed. In reality it was because he made her naive, soft spoken, and dainty which doesn't stick in the mind all too well
>Constant and inconsistent lore with a greek names thrown here and there to make it seem real
>useless side characters that appear once and don't really do anything or are very important
>Underdeveloped rogues gallery forcing all of Diana's fights to be with mostly monsters
>Not very many returning rogues from the few that there are
>constant meeting with Greek gods and them taking over most plots rather than original developments
>Diana and the Amazons being subservient to the gods
>lore lore lore lore lore lore. Most of his stories are about things that already happened rather than things that are happening right now

I think it really set a precedent because by the end of his run it had been 5 years. By then most people didn't really know or remember much of Wonder Woman from before Perez and the new writer didn't know where to take it.

So brand new direction and the cycle of discarding and trying to create your ideal Wonder Woman started.

I fucking love Perez and his run. But he did a real number on Wonder Woman by throwing away traditional superhero fodder for her to play with.

I should also mention that I read All New All Different Wonder Woman from the Silver Age. It was mostly okay but I dig the style and it gave us Dr. Cyber.

I'm a fan of her more superhero-type post crisis rogues including Mayfly, Deva, the Circle.

I still haven't managed to read any Queen of Fables stories because those are in Justice League I think. I didn't run into them when reading Wonder Woman's full run.

I read some of her golden age stuff. Trying to find some more Silver age stuff that isn't Kung Fu Wonder Woman.

Your story is actually the exact same as mine.

One of the things that makes Rucka's run so good was that it did restore a lot of elements that had been abandoned by Perez.

Obviously I love Perez's run but to me it suffers from a lot of the exact same problem as Man of Steel and Batman Year One in that it being a complete reinvention caused us to lose a lot of classic stuff, and that future runs adhered too much to it.

Son, that shit started with Kanigher. Marston died, Kanigher took over and suddenly Diana's teen years were spent in inexplicable tug of war games between monster boys, and her mum's blonde.

I'm a fan of the I-Ching era as well, though obviously it's not that great, it's just such a fascinating period of her history.

There's a Bronze Age story called the 12 Labours of Wonder Woman where she has to re-earn her place in the JLA, it's definitely a classic.

Silver Age Wondie is a lot like Silver Age Supes, a lot of really bizarre stories and concepts that were supposed to appeal more to kids. Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot stories were absolutely hilarious.
>>
>>91305863
Well, Year One is godly so I ain't gonna complain.

Man of Steel is one in about 7 origin stories of Superman that I read. It's a problem that's facing Wonder Woman right now too.

And I get, origin stories are popular because they're a good jumping off point. But whereas Batman has only one, both Superman and Wonder Woman have way too many reimaginings.

I do love Rucka's run except for the gods. They were pretty unimaginative.

I love Ferdinand the minotaur, he's a fun character. And I was really happy to see Vanessa back as Silver Swan.

It would honestly be my dream to create a defining animated series for Wonder Woman using elements from all runs to create one big, cohesive story.
>>
Also best Wonder Girl panel ever right here.

>>91305971
While technically true, that's more analogous to New Look Batman than 90's/early 2000's Wonder Woman.

Kanigher wasn't going "The problem with Wonder Woman is ____" and trying to "redefine her for a new generation" like so many did after Perez, specifically Byrne and Luke. He was just trying to make a title for young girls.

I'm really glad he's been able to survive through to modern times now being a mentor of New Superman.

I remember reading a story (forgot what it's called) where an interdimensional being comes and Wonder Woman enlists a team of superheroines including Power-Girl, Huntress, Batgirl, Black Canary, etc. It was from the Silver Age and posted here on /co/.

Posted before I could type.

Yeah, I love Year One and MoS (though MoS is still kind of controversial for obvious reasons, I'm a defender). I just hate the "we gotta update the superheroes for the new generation!" concept, even if they did it really well. That's the kind of thing that leads to Brainiac becoming a spooky skelington and Crazy Quilt cutting people into patches.

Also I've got a pic somewhere of some artist who worked on I think JLU or some other DC show who made a concept for Wonder Woman TAS. It is a goddamn shame nothing like that ever came to be, because we'd see a lot less "Wonder Woman has no good stories" threads if that were a thing.

I love it and Wonder Girl is CUTE!

From what I know, Wonder Girl and Hippolyta time traveling adventures rose up from the fact that Wonder Woman was to bdsm focused. Comics Code Authority thought she was too sexy and lesbian and so they turned it into fun family adventures instead.

>>

I honestly think it's very necessary to update heroes to modern standards.

I would really love it if legacies were used more often though. Wouldn't it be great if Batman had stayed in his era with Robin taking on the mantle after him and so on?

Hell, that'd be one hell of a story. A legacy of superheroes.
>>
>>91306305
I doubt we'd be getting any omnis from that era. She was never all that popular and the only reason DC has never stopped printing her is because they'd lose her rights otherwise.

I'm sure they also love talking about how they got the first female superhero.

Maybe the movie will bring some interest to the Wonder Line.

Agree 100%. I know it'll never happen in mainstream continuity because muh bruce but legacy is what got me hooked on DC.

Also there's a series by Byrne called Superman/Batman Generations that's exactly what you're describing, the concept is that Batman and Superman started in 1940 and 1938 and just aged in real time after that with other people assuming the mantles. I've never read it but it gets recd a lot here.

>>91306443

Marston and Rucka are gimmes, some of the others I like are Messner-Loebs, Jiminez, Dodson, Azzarello and Simone's runs, and Byrne's Cassie Sandsmark origin (the rest of his Wondie is shit).

Simone's isn't the best or anything but I've been pretty vocal about it being underrated.

There's a story in Kelly's JLA called the Golden Perfect that I really like; when I was first reading it I thought it was awful at the beginning, but then by the end of the story Kelly proved that he does actually get Wonder Woman more than either Morrison or Waid did, which was surprising.

>During the post-WWII era up to the Silver Age, most Wonder Woman stories were actually just scripts Marston had already partially written, and his family went on writing for a long time before Wonder Woman started actually being fully written by Kanigher.

Just when I thought that era couldn't get any screwier, I learn of this. Makes me wonder about some of my favorite stories, like Gloop or the one with the blind girl who befriends Diana while everyone else treats her like a crime fighting automaton.

The latter sounds like a Marston story. Usually if it's really fucking weird, it's a Kanigher story though. Kanigher wanted Diana to be more like Superman.

Yeah, this shit sucks

I had forgotten that Diana had been retconned to not be a founding JLA member in favor of Black Canary and was all confused by the chronology going on there.

>>91308426
Reminds me of that bad prose issue of Batman Morrison did about the Joker.
>>
>>91308626
That one was actually good. It was a story in its own right.

This issue is pure, descriptive epilogue of uninteresting details that they couldn't be bothered to fit into the story. A flash foward of nothingness if you will.
>>
>>91309067
And I could barely read that fucking handwriting.

Anyway, issue #9 won't fit in the thread, so new thread

No i remember why i never finished this run, i reached this issue and then i keep postponing it's reading till a day i felt like reading a bunch of text for a cape comic, which never came.

Thankfully you can honestly skip it. The only important thing is that Diana gets a publicist and Barbara Minerva decides to go after the lasso.

For christs sake there's an entire page that's just explaining what she did in Legends.

God damn it Zeus, get some pants so you can keep it in them.

She's a sleazeball, but I kinda like Myndi and wish she stuck around.
