Stop this meme, quips are overdone and it's really hard to come off as witty and funny instead of annoying. Just think about how every Marvel movie has to have a bunch of quips, like everyone is mr funny guy. No, use those really sparingly

>>91001129
Then again, what do you mean by humorous jokes? You can play with characters of different personalities interacting to create some fun scenes, you have lots of room to set up jokes, you have whole arcs to set up long jokes, or maybe have a self contained page. Your question is really vague, you are basically asking how to write a joke in general.
>>
>>91002019
>overdone
because it's good
>hard to come off as witty and funny instead of annoying
a lot of things worth doing are hard
the movies are pretty funny, even if they do overdo it. but I didn't say Iron Man Movie quips, I said Spider-Man quips. Read old comics and learn the right way to do it: the way to make it feel like people are genuinely trying to use levity to deal with a hard situation, rather than designating the situation as meaningless fluff

that's pretty cool and creative. Might as well play with stuff like that with aliens. I liked the bio-air-intake of those flying dragons in avatar
>>
>>91002727
Thanks, I chose to not draw her thumbs since they seemed to just blend into the fur in all my references, so I though that detailing in the thumb might look a smidge unrealistic. She's got green on her wings just because I saw it on a sphinx statue and thought it would look neat. I just thought she needed a bit more green on her palette in cat-mode. You think the green looks overbearing?

>>91002785
That's pretty cool desu, does your comic have any more weird/creative monster biology/physiology?
>>
>>91003015
not overbearing, not even bad, it's just... begging to be explained. Like this streak my cat has where it looks like someone hit her with a bit of white paint. it goes right across her stripes and it only seems to affect one millimeter-wide strip of follicles. like did she get freeze-branded? it's distracting is all. if she had even one other thing like a streak of hair or a facial marking it'd be like "oh okay, sure, she's like that"

Turtle aliens with detachable symbiotic shells, psychic eyeball plant beings, rock-eating rhino aliens, elf-eared cycloptic death cults, and air-bladder filled fat monk aliens are some of the weird bits in the comic.

I generally based aliens off of animals but then go weird directions with them.

Alright, /co/, I'be got an Idea for a webcomic/ animated shorts.

Think about your own favorite comics - why did you enjoy them?

For me, a good comic needs good characters. Good characters can prop up a weak story or weak art, but even a good plot and good art can't be supported by bland characters.

rut roh, is it time travel?
it's interesting how often time travel doesnt change what time of day it is, or time of year..
>>
Is it normal to sketch out a sort of storyboard when writing your comic? As in, it flows cinematically. It seems to be working for me, but I wonder if anyone else does it this way.
>>
>>91008769
Do you mean thumbnails of the whole page, or a movie-style storyboard, where only the visual directions of each panel are shown?

Many comic creators - particularly artists - break down the script into thumbnails when working on a page, but it's also a useful technique for writers (even if they can't draw) to help them figure out how much or how little can be put in each panel.

The latter. I'm not even at the thumbnail stage, really. I'm just writing the script, but am struggling to write it without drawing visualizations. And I'm not the artist, I'm the writer. These drawings suck.
>>
>>91010152
I can't answer that, but I'm just curious, how many people here have had formal art training and what kind? Like high school, community college, art school, etc.
>>
>>91009702
i love this style, both the characters and the lines.
You definitely need to do something other than lineart, though, because this is just too white, y'know? but you don't necessarily have to color the entire thing, you could get away with just spot grays to provide depth. just one or two colors of gray would do just fine.
what's it about?
as for hosting, any of the free hosting sites works fine, comicfury, comicgenesis, it's all the same more or less

I already posted an unfinished version of this pic, but anyways, let's make the thread more alive.

So as I was saying a few days ago, I had another idea for a comic. And I'm doing a visual presentation for each of the 4 main characters. Remember how a few threads ago we were talking about videocomics? I've decided to do this one in that style, (my intention so far) in a square layer that could fit Instagram. It's going to be tough to do, but I want to try something different. It's going to take a lot of time to make the first piece, tho.

This s Henry Rookfrey: engineer, writer, adventurer. Say a gentle hi! to him.

Tomorrow I'll go back to my fancomic, so I don't think I'll post another character until next week

The font looks fine to me (god knows he's changed it enough times) but the text is too small, and it's not fun to stare closely at bright neon colors for a long period, so I'd suggest larger text (each letter about twice as tall/wide) so those colors don't sear the eyes so badly.

Oh, thanks for the compliment.

Well, I'm really not that good. I mean: I know that they don't look the same, I know there are differences. But sometimes it takes me years to notice where exactly is the problem. Here, I know there are issues with the eyes and the lips and the jaw (and probably the forehead, but I'm not sure). But I don't know how to fix it without wasting hours drawing and erasing once and again. To be honest, I'm still learning how the human body works, little by little, by trial and error. For now I'll be fine it the character resembles himself half the time, heh.

He has to have a large, round but masculine face, with also round eyes. I'm bad at drawing hair, but I guess I kinda looks the same. Or at least you can guess it's the same haircut. I hope.

I still hate drawing hands. But I'm also starting to hate drawing hair. FUCK IT, I'LL DRAW ALL OF THEM WITH VEGETA HAIR.

well that's the nice thing about digital art, it's really easy to make tiny tweaks to proportions. Most of the issues I see here have to do with the nosebridge length and thus the placement of eyes and hairline
You'll get it sooner or later, don't worry. in the meantime you're good enough at detailing to make it look like you know what you're doing. I mean that bag alone is fantastic. You're clearly good at hair, but I know full well how hard it can be to keep it consistent
basically make sure you sketch out the full shape of the skull when you darw the head, and everything will fall into place (like you won't accidentally draw a hat that clips through the front of the cranium like that)

I remember drawing all 251 pokemon once, should give you a rough idea of what year it was,.. i forget how long it took me, but in the end I looked at the quality and wished it had taken me longer. I had a big heavy box of crap. Without some kind of instruction being involved, repetition doesn't do shit. but this is consistent with what I hear about art school, it's all 'do work' and very little 'this is how you should do the work'

Teachers are there to refine what you do, not necessarily force you to make art a certain way. Early art classes are definitely "do it this way" and then it turns into "refine the work you have and here is how you can push it further.

That being said, art school is hell. Studio classes are 6 hours a week per class and double/triple that in homework. Combine that with 4 studio classes and...blargh im ded

Oof, I don't hate that font, but... the first and fourth panels are readable and the rest are a lot harder. This font has a real minimum decent size, and some letters are really odd. I'd save this font for big flourishy title-y stuff and use something a little more readable for the rest (copperplate gothic, anyone?)

That's basically what I mean. Logically, if you spend three-fourths of your education with no instructor present, it's ludicrous for them to ask for money. you're obviously doing most of it yourself. This is consistent with what friends told me about their art school experience. Some classes had no instruction at all, only review and judgment each day, of what was assigned previously, and then a new assignment, and then class was over.
It reminds me of math class. Do we really need to do 30 problems after being taught how to do a kind of problem? If you don't get it after the first 3, the remaining 27 aren't going to be any easier. and if you do, you aren't going to forget it just because it wasn't drilled into you. You're going to remember it until the test and then forget it forever.
but then I have actually heard someone tell me their math class involved no instruction, only assignment and grading. Baffling.

Well she isn't human. Why would a non-human creature look anything like a human female? As for her clothing, her kind live in dens and don't take value in big extravagant clothing. Again- non human, so their values are not like human values.

In the lore, her kind are pushed into reservations and kept closely guarded as they're regarded as "dangerous" magic users. The value for them is the ability to read and write. She's also around 10 feet tall, and due to the structure of her neck and jaw her voice is also deep like an average human male's (as are all the female voices for them and their cousins).

Why would a non-human creature look exactly like a human male with a strangely detached face and canine paws? Just saying, you'll have a hard time finding an audience that isn't confused by that. it should at least be addressed
good to see someone acknowledging the fact that larger things always have deeper voices though!

Don't go to college to make comics.

If you really feel the need to go to college for art, go for something that will REQUIRE you to improve your technical proficiency. And then do comics on the side.

But don't go to college at all if you don't have art experience. To make it in any form of art, you need the self-discipline to do it a ton on your own to hone your craft. Paying thousands of dollars being your only incentive to practice is fucking retarded and you'll never make it if it is.

She also has a mane, sharp teeth, no nipples, a body covered in velvety fur, digitigrade feet, and a tail. And no eyes. And no ears (well, ear holes). I think you're the first person to ever get hung up on this in the 6 years I've been drawing these cuties.

Again, they're not human so why would they stick to a human schematic? Something can be masculine looking subjectively and still be non human.

I never said I didn't know why you were confused, I said that person (assuming it's not you idk) was the first to be real hung up on it in a while.

Breasts/nipples implies that they feed their young milk, which they do not. They are big and muscular because they live hard, physically active lives (and most are nomads, to boot). I didn't make these decisions just to have a giggle, I made them based on my interest in biology and sociology. While they aren't humans, you can't just change major muscle groups without changing the entire design as well. That's just a given (unless they were like, wayne barlowe level of non-human).

I'm sorry that you are so offended by the fact that the sexual dimorphism between males and females for my species- but it is what it is!

For your trouble, here's a male of that same species.

If you post your stuff here, I assume you want to be critiqued, if your character design is bad like that artist's, it will be called out as such. If you don't want the critique, like I said, don't play dumb, just say you are not interested on the feedback or ignore it. Don't be butthurt for other people, Anon.
>>
>>91014886
>I never said I didn't know why you were confused, I said that person (assuming it's not you idk) was the first to be real hung up on it in a while.
first of all I wasn't hung up, I was simply asking what motivated you to do it so deliberately, not-so-subtly pointing out that you definitely did do it deliberately, and I see through your "I'm just gonna leave this here and call it a girl teehee let's see what happens" game. I was hoping your response wouldn't be denial, but it was.
You are straight up lying if you say literally everyone you come across doesn't ask about this. every. single. person.
but because you insisted on the charade, it has now become a big thing.

I post here regularly, an I do get critique, and the thing about critique is that the artist doesn't have to listen to all of it. Sometimes, the critic just misses the what the artist was going for. The artist here clearly wasn't trying to make a feminine looking species, which you ignore.

It's like complaining that Spongebob's character design is unrealistic, when it was never meant to be.
>>
>>91014924
Shut the fuck up why don't you go cry to someone else
>>
>>91014924
I didn't though, I posted a pic of one of my major characters and called her what she was. Y'all the ones that got assblasted about it. My goodness. I knew /co/ was for neckbeards but I didn't realize y'all would get this mad about a girl having muscles and no tits!
And yes I've gotten "where's the boobs?" questions, but there's a difference between questioning the design and getting upset that the design lacks features YOU want.
Go cool your balls or somethin, anon.

>>91014985
Ahh thanks for this. Yeah I really wasn't going for feminine in the first place (I kinda get tired of seeing alien/monster races that have cool dudes but... boring boobied girls I guess) and wanted some biology to back it up. I don't really understand what the big stink is, I'm not trying to play a game here. Just sharing stuff I've worked on for a long time and have fun building.
>>
>>91014985
> the thing about critique is that the artist doesn't have to listen to all of it
I'm glad someone understands that. But you do have to listen to curiosity, and have perspective. That's not optional. You enter a community, you need to read the room and know not everyone here is a member of your xenozoology forum.
a lot of criticism is legit, a lot of it's opinion, and a lot is legit opinion. like we're actually wired (generally) to like some things, or to see some things some way...
but on the other hand you have the phenomenon of the elite pushing their own personal gripes and bothers into that category, trying to make everyone hate it too.. and people will, because of the emperor's new clothes phenomenon. if you have taste, and you know some things are just cool and others lame, and you can tell which things stimulate you, which aspects of the aesthetics are doing so, then you can solidly shut down someone else claiming something inherently looks bad if it doesn't trigger your eye. The conflicts come when two of these "obviously just instinctively get it" things collide. Usually one person is lying or severely out of touch

It's also important to remember that these threads have dedicated trolls, such as >>91014987 >>91014821 this guy
>>
>>91015022
Just a tip, in the event that you choose to modify your attitude and stick around (as I hope you do)
Falsely accusing people of getting upset when they clearly weren't is not helping the situation. You know the reaction you got, you're upset about it, but that doesn't make it hostile.

I'm more confused than anything, but I consider this more of a learning experience. If I only expose my designs to one group of people this is stuff I'm not going to hear, which could be bad when I do start producing my comic.

Well, >>91015033 Sorry I got aggressive/hostile. Wasn't my intention to start an argument! Just wanted to share stuff.
>>
>>91015095
Yeah man, yeah. If you genuinely weren't pretending, then that means you definitely aren't exposing yourself to enough weirdos, and that is a major important part of being a content creator. Gotta at least know what to prepare for. I try to let people know that when I see it, because God knows that has been me in the past, and it sucks being caught unprepared and reacting in a way that only digs you deeper

also, y'know, if you met more people who actually do play games like that, you'd know what you sounded like, and be able to say 'oh no I know those people, I'm not doing that' and actually be believed.
>>
>>91015095
I like the idea of challenging the views of what is male and female, yeah. But I don't do it just to stir up shit, I find that petty and usually makes designs and characters 2D and flat, their stories don't go far if they're made just to be a statement I guess.

While I don't really plan on making them more feminine and keeping their sexual dimorphism as it is, it's good to know how other people see them right off the bat.

Also will admit that reading back, what I thought was just playful banter did sound like I was playing a game now that there's more hindsight lmao. Again, sorry for the misunderstanding!

>>
>>91015210
>I don't do it just to stir up shit,
I believe you
but you are aware that there are people who do, and we're all a little gunshy, yeah?

honestly it's not even about tits, I draw titless lizard women all the time. it's more about broad shoulders, narrow hips (actually, do they reproduce vaginally? actually I'm looking now and they're not THAT narrow), and basically the fact that they look extremely human, rather than like any other animal or a whole new one (which we know you can do, looking at that supremely creative wolf)

people sometimes complain about other creatures having pecs at all, but as far as I can tell pecs are the natural consequence of having arms. you need something to anchor them
>>
>>91015257
If I could post the anatomical stuff I sketched of them I would, but since this is a blue board I don't know how that'd fly.

Yes, they have your basic vaginas and penises (though the penis is internal in a sheath, as are the testicles). They give birth to young who derive their early nutrients from yolk-nodes on the umbilical cords. When their baby crush-plate teeth come in they can eat semi-solid foods rather early.

Most people on this bored are over-sensitive, triggered, SJW, Tumblerina, jealous anons, or just outright trolls or try-hards who are usually just splashing around the kiddie pool.

Also, there is a a lot of shit posting here in general, pay them no mind and take what you can, ignore the rest if you can and move on to actual good criticism.

Most if not all the good artists left this place LONG ago, this is only the kiddie side of the pool, waiting to enter the deep end (more indepth info, which this place usually doesn't provide, but just shit posts when a good artist comes and proceeds to bully them).

It's a good place to get a thicker skin and is much more aggressive and hostile, which is good for an artist, all to the contrary, hug boxing and ass patting does not make a good artist, always be critical and always look to learn and expand.

Honestly I like it, the alien females seem more manly to me, and I personally would prefer to see them a little more curvy or feminine shaped, but that is just my personal opinion and tastes, so don't take it too seriously on that note.

Do you have any pages to show as well, or are you just in the pre-planning stage?
>>
>>91015404
Cool olmec stone head.

Also thank you for the advice, as I said earlier this is my first time posting here after lurking for about a year.

I did have some pages but a harddrive failure meant I lost around 8 years of work lmao, kill me. So I'm starting over from what I managed to salvage (and i did keep physical books where I wrote down ideas and whatnot). I need to write up a comic script I think before I just jump in. Again I'm not entirely confident on starting, I still feel like there's a shitload of work to do.

(Pic is of Rupinder, posted earlier. Was practicing perspective here.)
>>
>>91015095
I would say try to make the musculature and landmarks less human. It very much does come off as a plain human male torso. With how alien the heads are you really have more room to play around and get away with it.

Doesn't have to be 'feminine.' That is a dumb argument.
>>
>>91015535
indeed. only argument i'd make is make sure the males have some kind of major flashy display somewhere front and/or up top. a mane, horns, what have you. i believe a dewlap was mentioned, that'll do fine.

I actually find it's more fun sometimes making differently proportioned animal torsos. we tend to ignore the torso in favor of 'how do i digitigrade limbs' but they really can vary a lot. a barreled or even keeled breastbone can make something look positively savagely forward-moving, and humped vertebrae are just.. forget about it, awesome
>>
>>91015771
They don't need flashy displays because they don't rely on sight that much. Their perception of color varies between individuals anyhow since it's based on scent.

They are a sapient species, so it's not like they communicate in grunts and growls (though, they /can/ if they're not feeling talkative). Think about animals IRL, not all have flashy displays. Bearded dragons for example just have black beards when they're aroused (either because they're in The Mood or aggressive). Sharks don't either. Nor dogs, or cats.

The Anishi do have hunched postures and long necks, since they grow up in tunnels/dens. Shivali are built more for surface living so they lack the hunch.

While I'm still developing this species in very minute ways (like fixing their feet up), I'm not looking to make any major changes to their biology at this point. I appreciate the pointers, though!
>>
>>91015833
that's a good point, but it's my experience that even blind animals still have something like that on males.. if they have dimorphism at all that is. you're right, not all do
i like thinking about the posture. that's something I need to spend way more time on myself. my poses are always way too neutral
>>
>>91015871
Also sorry if that sounded aggressive! It's stuff I've thought about a long time... I spent days figuring out if they really needed nipples or not haha.

I always feel like my art is too stiff myself, other than practicing gesture sketches I'm not sure how to break out of it!

Anon, here's my suggestion for a change to make them more alien. I made the male one taller, and made some other little changes, but I kept them dimorphic, of course. What do you think?
>>
>>91016071
snickering pretty hard
it's funny how size usually works, if there is dimorphism.. the male will be larger in a lot of species but if there's a major effort put into egg-laying then the female's sure to be larger
>>
let's not let the thread die tonight okay?
now gimme five
>>
>>91016071
Made me laugh desu

>>91016084
I've debated making them lay eggs, but considering only the anishi females exhibit the larger stature over males it didn't make much sense.
>>
>>91016191
yeah it'd probably be their lower bodies that were bigger anyway. females of both kinds but especially oviparous ones tend to carry extra fat down there for that reason

sometimes i like thinking of creative new kinds of reproduction. in particular, as it is, I already see shark egg cases as being pretty much a detached placenta. I could see something like a mix of that and marsupial, where the flexible translucent 'egg' comes out then gets attached somewhere, potentially anywhere, on either of the parents, in order to connect to their blood supply. then maybe they secrete a shell over it or something.

A boy falls in love with a girl. He is mysteriously gifted with her phone number. He calls her and finds out that she likes him as well. But the next day, she doesn't remember the confession. The girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn’t exist in this universe at all. She is the girl’s alternate universe counterpart, who likes his own alternate self. Ok I'm trying to name all the technology devices in universe and can't really tell if they sound retarded or not. The setting is a comedy so they can sound funny, just not stupid or cringey. So far I got.

Hexxtor- personal assistant and navigation system that helps direct you around the galaxy. Name is a slight nod to hex mapping in table top games as a means of exploring the environment.

Xenovox- interspecies language translator

Icon- wallet, ID and house/car keys in a single cartridge. The cartridge is labelled with a logo specific to the owner.

V.A.C.S- Visual attitude communication system. A charismatic device worn among alien species usually in the facial region to depict their mood. It allows for a body language and emotion system that can be read consistently among members of different species. Pic related, Dupe wears them as glasses.

Cynex- a being who has undergone a transference of their consciousness into a machine and accidentally had their personality corrupted by an unknown hive mind. Creatures with this condition become sadistic and mischievous and congregate as a single faction regardless of their alignments when they were "alive".

Hercos- short term for "Hermetic cosmetics" a variety of graphic stickers that serve the purpose of sealing small breaches in space travel equipment that needs to be kept airtight. A lot of people use them on their equipment like people use stickers on skateboards.

Any input or alternate ideas are appreciated.
>>
>>91017546
they're all pretty decent, thought Hexxtor is my favorite since it sounds like a pun on Hector

the only ones that rub me the wrong way are Cynex and Hercos. Neither of them seem to roll off the tounge. I think my issue with cynex might just be a personal preference, but hercos sounds like it'll be awkward to organically explain.

My recommendation for that one is to not abbreviate the term, actually call it by its full name "Hermetic cosmetic". That way you immediately set up this juxtaposition of having this super serious name for this ridiculous thing, as opposed to wasting a panel or two explaining why the abbreviation makes sense
>>

The Scrub Author's Goodie Bag, which is always the second post of /hyw/ threads, has a link to Blambot.com, which has a lot of free fonts specifically for lettering comics with. According to the licence, they are legitimately free for independent comic makers.

>>91012524
Fit caption boxes and speech balloons to the text, don't try and force text into a pre-set space. If the size and shape of the text changes, you'll have to change the caption boxes. Finding a suitable font early on means less faffing about making changes later.

>>91001178
Speech balloon placement seems fine. In panel 3, the left balloon has plenty of space, but the right balloon is kind of cramped.

In Panel 1 Balloon 1, you've got a horizontal oval shaped block of text placed inside a vertical oval speech balloon (also P1 B2). While the text fits neatly inside, there's a lot of space above and below. Keep the font size the same throughout, and adjust the line breaks so the dialogue fits, rather than changing the font size.
>>

Yeah that might be a good option. Would "cosmer" be a decent name for them? I came up with it after making the post.

Also yeah I wanted hexxtor to sound like a name since it's a personal assistant.

Cynex is one I've had trouble with replacing. Originally I had 2 hive mind like groups, each on opposite factions with the names The Cynex and The Manist. Each being plays on cynic and humanist, indicative of how they view life. Not sure thats a dumb idea though. Another option I've come up with is "Ekdisis" which is a play on a scientific term for reptilian skin shedding. Overall they just need to sound evil and scary. They're the most imposing horrificly cruel faction in the known universe.

you're assuming the sun as the center of the universe. no good mate. earth doesn't just move in a circle, it moves in a spiral around the galaxy, and the galaxy presumably moves away from the center of the universe. or orbits it. or if not the universe, then some larger organization of galaxies. we really don't know.

besides that a year isn't a perfect number of rotations, so if you traveled to the exact point the earth was relative to the sun last year, you'd still be 6 hours later in the day or whatever.
>>
>>91027221
yeal well you're assuming the spinning of galaxies has a known and quantifiable force when it might very well be the movement of the fabric of spacetime itself.... which when applied to a timemachine would have no effect on relative position to objects sharing the same spacetime co-ordinates.

Would a comic about teenagers who can see ghosts immediately invite Paranatural comparisons? I've been planning out a horror/mystery comic about a moody teenage boy who is suddenly able to start seeing ghosts and I'm afraid the basic premise is too similar.
>>
>>91035080

"Person can see ghosts" is an amazingly common premise. How you add to that premise or execute it is what will set you apart from the rest of the breadwinners.
>>
>>91035080
a comic about anything would invite comparisons/accusations, especially as you'll start out as "that webcomic some guy made". People will think, as an average joe they can talk to through the internet, you're probably engaged in the same media they're in. Really, Id say just make sure you're not knowingly not copying anything wholesale and put your heart into it. Most likely your product will show *some* uniqueness, regardless of how similar its premise is to another

Thanks for the feedback.
The basic plot is that he got his ghost-sight powers from a curse that will soon kill him, and that he's trying to lift the curse. He tries going to a monster called the Devil who lives in the forests outside of town to life the curse, but the Devil cannot. The Devil tells the boy that he once taught a murderer the curse, but that man was executed long ago. However, the murderer's ghost lingered by possessing the living, and while he wants the boy dead, he's the only one who can lift the curse.

The plot and tone are going to be fairly dark/dour, but I just thought the basic premise of the story might feel a little copy-cattish.

I'm going to end the scene here and move onto the next one. Part of me thinks I could stretch the moment longer by like another panel set, but I feel my effort ready to move on. I'm just going to fade back to reality here, show a reaction in the next panel, then change scenes in panel 0089. (Also I think I need to change the sleepy expression)

I also want to try my hand at animating a scene like my friend has been doing.

ooh good discussion
out of the main cast at least, it has become Hel. Easily the most depth I've ever given to someone who started out as a gag character (which still isn't much), and a development from the useless little kid with no powers to the decidedly unperky mahou shoujo complete with some destiny shit

clutter is really hard to draw yeah. you have some nice wheat going though, bunche sof flowers or whatever.. great wood paneling and planks, I really like this. I especially appreciate the way the beams have thicker outlines to show they're overhead
with all that detail it'd be a shame to leave things like the messy table legs, the bunched-up rug (actually I guess that's intentional?) and most importantly the door whose perspective seems kinda wrong (is the doorknob really below table height?). seems to taper too much.
>>
>>91053245
Huh it didn't even occur to me about the door handle being low, thank you for the catch there. I'll fix it when I'm back on the comp. As for the rug, I was going for something like a straw mat but now that you said it looks bunched up I can't unsee that. Should be easy to fix, I just need to study a ref better.
Not sure if adding detail to the table legs might make it too busy? Or maybe just use a really small brush...

*rings the ColdFusion bell*

So I've moved from Kiwi Day to Kiwi Day N and the addition of full color makes it really glaring that some character designs look really jarring next to each other. I redesigned NeNe and Loki to make them look like they might belong in the same comic. I even made a point of digging up the mask designs from their wedding ( http://kiwiday.comicgenesis.com/d/20041014.html )

holy kettle corn, I love you. I can't believe you slogged through that entire pencilmess.
huh, never noticed the jarringness, though the decisions on the colors of the original cast were marred by a ton of monitor and eye problems (and even then weren't always consistent. sometimes I made NeNe's hair more purple like that, but most of the time it felt like it should be dark pink). In the end only kishon and soroban's colors really look that good to me. and tamasai's I guess.
THESE ARE SO COOL REDESIGNS. I love fanart like that (used to be most of what I got). that freakin scarf, that cute little cheongsam dress.. NeNe's little puppybrows..
holy shit their wedding masks. I can't even

Drew up some concepts for alien species to use as background characters. Aliens in universe have a tendency to mimic whatever the dominant species is within their solar system for the sake of communication and charisma towards whoever the majority is in their area. This also gives a reason for why the aliens look vaguely humanoid when clothed and composed.

Unfortunately I'm having difficulty creating any aliens with hair that don't look dumb.

One of the major reasons I've yet to start my comic is this here. I'm always worried that I'm not good enough to begin. Course, this is why I haven't really done anything in 6 years of working on it (that and totally rehauling the story and characters).
>>
>>91058246
Believe me, you are perfectly ready to draw comics. However, one thing I might recommend is drawing a bunch of mannequin or stickmen comics first as practice. This might sound insane, but believe it or not, a lot I've seen even the best illustrators absolutely fall flat when it comes panel composition and flow even compared to comic artists who might be less proficient in drawing. Basically, you wanna crank out at least 1-3 pages of these stickmen comics every day for yourself as practice and you will start to get a sense of flow and composition that not many people can teach. If you're more interested in making comics, then I highly suggest Making Comics by Scott Mccloud, it'll definitely change the way you make comics

it's definitely messy. most of the lines appear to be haphazardly included. Otherwise though the colors are great and the overall composition is great. For curiosity sake how long do you guys plan each of you pages.
For example this one took about 20 or so minutes of planning, that mostly went into the 4 panel.
>>
>>91058246
I forgot to say.. the reason you had the door handle so low is that's where door handles normally are, proportionate to the door. What the issue revealed is that this door isn't very high (and the wall it's set into is even lower, it's the same height as the door) But it looks nice so you probably don't have to fuck with it any more (would probably have to redraw it at this point. Just keep that in mind
>>
>>91061330
tilt your head slightly and look at the sword
it moves significantly to the rear once it goes behind his head.. that's why people are saying it looks stabby. Of course you'll have to enlarge your canvas to make room for it, which might be why that happened
There's nothing wrong with the proportions or the sword-over-shoulder pose

lately it takes 1-2 days working 4-ish hours a day to get the planning-out part working, but it's still mostly improvised and then maybe revised a bit. Kinda sucks because it's almost doubled how long the comic takes, but the quality has certainly gone up and the haphazardness down

Ah right. I suggest you play with skull shapes and let that dictate your plan. I saw this weird nosebridge-brow combination on these fauns in The Cummoner and it inspired me to make some truly weird mammal types with like... wing-ears..
there's a ton of unusual hair patterns you can do. a mane that goes all the way over the eyes and makes a raccoon-mask around them, a mane only over the snout but that goes up over the forehead between the eyes, a double mohawk...

He's an old man who's only joy is mortal combat, he looks for ongoing wars and conflicts to carve out slices of carnage for himself, not joining a side or accepting pay for his services. I should give a girly name to his sword and have him have an unhealthy fixation on it.

I didn't get to read this until it was finished. I haven't made it less messy, but hopefully the addition of the boat sort of grounds it with a somewhat stable space.

The scales are kind of haphazard and big, but I was trying to go for a sort of simple, hieroglyph like quality. If it's really not that good I can change them for next time.

Also, overcast lighting is somewhat tough. I didn't know whether or not there should be a strong cast shadow from the fish.

To be EXTREMELY succinct, it's told as a legend about a hero called "The Ascendant", who challenges God and his four clerics in a series of duels. The protagonist has to travel through four continents and challenge the resident cleric to a duel of their design. There is a HUGE emphasis on symbols, for example, each kingdom corresponds to a specific ideology and a symbol that represents that ideology. The ascendant himself merely bears the crest of his family, but as time passed on it took on a much larger meaning

The narrative switches between the legend itself, and the present day during a festival that celebrates him. There are multiple scenes where only the reader is privy to certain events that happened that people in the present do not know.

In the end, I came with something different.

All those years I didn't spend in art education have been really fruitful. Like... I suck hard at anatomy, but at least it resembles the human body, right? (hence why I was looking for photoreference, to be honest)

In any case, this is the frame for a usually spirited but sometimes totally negative female looking-for-an-actual-job woman who decides to fight crime and solve mysteries with his recently discovered size changing super powers: Jay Nemitelo, the coprotagonist.

Are you the anon that wasn't happy with how his strokes looked?

Maybe the problem is not only how soft or hard the brush is. I tried a lot of brusges until I found three or four that I liked ans then I used them to different purpouses. And even so. I still had to found that the key to my drawings looking good was more a matter of how I actually did my strokes. I got now thar I should never do a long line in less than one only movement, tha ir's a good idea to do small lines foe lying out the large one in a thiner brush and then draw a new one alone over then, thicker, to hide them. And that sonetimes it's better to conect single lines in the corners with a curve and sometimes is not. For me, tgat worked amd helped my digital drawings to look a bit more like my traditional ones.

How much of a writing backlog should I have before I start looking for an artist?

I was thinking an overall story outline and 20-30 pages of script. Naturally, I would assume that one would want enough content to reasonably describe the aesthetic of the world and it's characters to someone other than myself.

I've really wanted to write an early 20th century pseudo-historical naval story, think Tsushima and Jutland as much as the personalities and eccentricities of people like Von Tirpitz, Jackie Fisher, Kaiser Wilhelm II, and Winston Churchill that shaped things long before the first shell hurtled across the stormy waters of the North Sea.

Are there any real advantages to joining a webcomic collective? Like, if anyone here is in a webcomic collective, have you noticed any change in readership after joining?

I've thought about applying to Spider Forest a few times, but never actually did it. Even though I have some friends who joined, the overall range of comics of Spiderforest seems so unfocused with such a wide breath of quality , it didn't see like a very appealing collective to apply to.

>There are IRL people with dark skin and pale hair.

It's easier to tell how IRL people are emoting or expressing because of the higher resolution and details (colouring, shading etc) that real life affords. You're not even a very good 'cartoony' artist, let alone a good 'photorealism' artist, so don't flatter yourself with that kind of comparison.

>There are IRL people with dark skin and pale hair.
well first of all, no there aren't. but that's not what you should use to justify your art, since you can draw anything you want.
secondly, it's a lot easier to see people's faces in real life even if they're dark as tar, but there's a reason cartoons rarely go below 'wet cardboard' so the point is there is a legit reason, not that that's any excuse for anyone to tell you what to do with your own art.
>haven't decided yet
interesting, but acceptable.
>got it myself

>>91088155
Aboriginal people tend to have pale hair and dark skin. So...

Also as I stated here >>91088080 their skin and hair is a plot point. They're extra dark for a reason!
Also this is the first group of people who have called Halle a girl, most go with him or a safe "them". However, I like her being a girl cos it feels right for her character. So! Halle is officially a girl now. I like that I'm exposing the same things to two wildly different groups, makes for some good feedback and thought.

Why not go all the way and make it about special snowflake gender neutral nigger polar bear descendant alien hugging """girls"""
>>
>>91088619
Oh that's true, hadn't really ever connected the two!

You can make out the eyeballs and the hair because they're bright white but good luck with the rest of that facial ensemble

>Then you'd be better off advising them on how they can use contrast and shading to make their darker skinned characters' expressions pop

How about I tell them how to draw a head correctly, and tell them how to draw in perspective, and how to draw backgrounds, and everything else about being a not-bad artist?
>>
>>91088968
Really? You've never connected niggers with black hair and Aryans with blonde?

Go for it, champ! I'm always up for learning. I can just ignore you if you prefer that too. I'm here for feedback.

Care to share some of your own work too, while you're at it? You seem to know a thing or two.

After trying out to space out the legs, blending one of the, I definitely am sticking to the initial pose. I don't like it: fells... unnatural for some reason.

Just posting for letting you guys know that I at least tried it. I usually wellcome advice, because so far you guys have been quite helpful to me.

Can we just accept that some of the people here really have no fucking clue what they're talking about? Especially with how riled up some critics here have been getting when people say their critique is unhelpful.

Besides, it's honestly preferable when people draw redlines/edit images to show corrections, because it's usually more helpful to the artists that way. More artists talented artists here is always a good thing, and I'd prefer it if we had less retards chasing them off for being too """"tumblr""""

Yeah, why do we have to be an echo chamber ? Nobody's whining about other people's stuff, he's doing his own thing as he wants. What's wrong with that ?? Seems like folks got an agenda around here
