This version of Killer Frost was created 3.5 years ago and outside of her Villain's Month issue and the ARGUS mini this is her only significant appearance. Neither her VM story nor the ARGUS mini portrayed her as evil either. This Killer Frost has always had a questionable alignment and redeemable characterization. In New 52, Louise Lincoln was the mentally unstable inventer of the technology that eventually created Killer Frost (I believe it was a cold fusion reactor, instead of Crystal's original Thermafrost chamber.) She committed suicide by walking out into the arctic, and was replaced by Caitlyn Snow.

Caitlyn completed Louise's tech but it turned out that the research station was a HIVE operation, and they may have killed Louise. They lock Caitlyn in the chamber but she transforms into Killer Frost instead of dying.

Before N52, though, the first KF was Crystal Frost, who was an autistic genius who had a crush on Martin Stein. Stein didn't love her and she accidentally locked herself in her freezing chamber and got turned into Killer Frost, and decided to kill all men.

Her powers were unstable and before they eventually killed her, she went to her college friend Louise Lincoln. Louise blamed herself for Crystal's death- she told her shrink that she had intentionally picked on Crystal in college to keep her from ever finding love, and had ridden her coattails to her current job. Haunted by nightmares and grief, Louise took Crystal's notes and recreated her technology, then threw herself into the machine to die. She became the second Killer Frost and insisted that she'd live and kill for her dead friend.

Ostrander's run made a distinction between her being a power-hungry asshole and a sociopath. She is, for all intents and purposes, a supervillain with inclinations towards the greater good regardless of costs, but she is fully capable of recognizing her faults and flaws and is a person who is capable of love and empathy. Despite seeing the Squad as expendable and exploitable, she didn't see them as assets to be wasted. I think the real problem is that most modern writers don't give her other characters to play off of; Ostrander had about half a dozen people operating as Task Force X support crew and staff offering different viewpoints and morality.

my one issue with modern suicide squad is all the nuance and complexity of the original series has been sucked out for vapid hot topic brand insanity. a lot of writers treat amanda like a heartless angry black woman, but she's more than just that. from day one ostrander gave her a backstory that informed the kind of person she was. she could be cruel and cutthroat, but it was because she came from a background where she was weak and powerless.
