Geoffrey honestly was bad right up until the traitor plot too, and Shard was just Classic Sonic in Metal Sonic's body. There wasn't anything inherently good about their concepts that newer characters couldn't do better, outside maybe of Flynn being more confident people would like them and explore them.

My favorite Sally is the original gag Sally before Endgame. She really sank in terms of personality when she had to turn into the Perfect Leader/Princess, and only recovered as a fittingly comedic and personable character after the reboot removed so much emotional baggage from herself and the reader expectations.
