Introducing SQUIRREL GIRL's new archnemesis: DIABEETUS.
No they weren't. Stop believing every meme that gets shitposted all over /co/.
They made a variant cover for the first issue, that's all. Then people on /co/ saw that variant cover and started screaming about how that was the original art for the book but Marvel fired them for Erica Henderson, when the truth is that Ryan North wanted Erica Henderson as part of his original pitch, which means that Erica has been attached to the book since it was nothing more than an idea for a book. There was NEVER a point where Erica wasn't going to be the artist for Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and even if there was, Gurihiru was NEVER in the running to be the artist in the first place.
This is doubly obvious by the fact that it was Henderson that designed the new costume, and the Gurihiru art used Henderson's designs.
I think what we have here is different definitions of "an option."
They were never the "original art" and Marvel never fired them.
But Gurihiru are doing an ongoing for Marvel right now, so obviously they COULD have been an option if anyone wanted to pursue that idea early on in the process. Which they didn't.
But somewhere out there there IS an alternate Earth where Gurihiru draw the Squirrel Girl ongoing, and we all wish we lived there.
>if anyone wanted to pursue that idea early on in the process
But Ryan North DIDN'T want anybody but Henderson on art.
So Gurihiru was never an option because North didn't want that artist.
Editorial's lives are easier if they do what North wants but they are under no obligation to, and ultimately they can tell him to shut the fuck up and work with whatever artist they assign him and he has no real way to say no short of quitting, and at the point in his career he's at he needs Marvel a lot more than they need him.
Is roberto dead ? did they just kill a new mutant again ?
Damnit Ewing, stop focusing on Wiccan and Hulkling. Or at least give them a chance to develop friendships on the team outside of their relationship
Power Man, White Tiger and Pod have done nothing in this book. They may as well not even be on the team. Hell even Hawkeye is superfluous
New Avengers #11
Writer: Al Ewing
Penciller: Gerardo Sandoval
Cover Artist: Declan Shalvey
A.I.M. vs S.H.I.E.L.D. Starts NOW! They’ve lost the Island, the money, the toys, the charismatic leader, the champagne-dispensing robot and half the membership. Where do the New Avengers go from here? Can you say... TIPPY-TOE’S KOOKIE QUARTET? Guest-starring – The Scarlet Witch! The Plunderer! And the last chance to catch your breath before CIVIL WAR II!
Happy now you cunt?
It would be kind of fun if she had a hibernation power up like Calorie Queen. Or Shinoko.
Last I head he was in charge of the Lego helicarrier.
>is that /co/ doesn't really give a shit about Squirrel Girl
You're kidding me, right?
Somebody got me the first trade in the 2015 Secret Santa thread. I kept meaning to take a photo of it
They really were; I plan on giving some trades to my future niece-in-law, as soon as I've given her all the Tiny Titans and Li'l Gotham trades.
I really liked GLA-era Squirrel Girl; she was the kind of kid I'd have liked to do some babysitting for. I wouldn't want to get within ten feet of Doreen as she is now.
you kidding, Squirrel Girl is still one of my favorite characters, I just hate Henderson's art(the writing in her solo isn't that great either, but I'd be willing to tolerate it more if it had a better artist), like this cover is one of the only decent things she's done, and that's cause you can't see anyone's face(seriously her inability to properly draw faces is my biggest issue with her), which is why I'm very grateful she's in New Avengers, since it means she's being drawn by an actually competent artist
>Squirrel Girl is still one of my favorite characters, I just hate Henderson's art(the writing in her solo isn't that great either, but I'd be willing to tolerate it more if it had a better artist)
>Erica Henderson’s art remains chipper and cartoony, whether she draws clusters of concerned squirrels or Kraven in his capri-length leopard-print leggings. Every line fits perfectly into a fully-realized vision, with no element extraneous or out of place. Even small details like Squirrel Girl’s jaunty bush tail convey a rare degree of finesse and consistency, aided by Rico Renzi’s shading. Renzi’s candy colors straddle both playful pinks and oranges as well as organic browns and greens — appropriate for a woodland girl in an earth-toned costume.
How the fuck can anyone look at this cover and not laugh their asses off at it, let alone thing it is anywhere near as good as this fucker is saying?
I saw this in my LCS once and I was transfixed, for 5 minutes, just staring and laughing internally. It took a hell of a lot of will power not to bring it up to the counter and ask the owner "what the flying fuck is wrong with this one?"
Erica Henderson is a woman who is incapable of drawing feminine features.
Fellow womenchildren gotta support each other.
The lack of self-awareness makes me smile.
Is it happening? Are we finally getting better art for New Avengers? Wiccan doesn't look like a roided up anime character here so that's certainly an improvement. Hopefully it extends beyond just a cover.
I miss the Power Up Comic hate threads. Such an agressively inoffensive comic, with zero tension, and the main character who was entirely ripped off from the "how to make a character to appeal to tumblr" comic
>Gamergate is still going strong
it's a social justice movement no one is paying attention to any more. that it still has members means nothing when they fail to accomplish anything more
Well her legs are pointing the right way now so, you know, half
You know you fags who complain about the art on Squirrel Girl are just as whiny and easily triggered as the dumbasses who complained about Manara's Spider-Woman, right?
Don't like it. Don't buy it.
Vote with your dollar.
Don't just sit around and complain about how an artist on some book offends you for even existing.
> whoever wins, we lose
> the game where the rules are made up and the points don't matter
> I'll be in muh bunk
>Don't just sit around and complain about how an artist on some book offends you for even existing.
I was thinking about that for a while, and remembering when /co/ used to have its regular bitching threads about Moon over June or Hathor. I think the big difference between those and Squirrel Girl and Power Up etc. is that the former were written by weirdos who didn't give two shits about what I read. Kate Leth and her ilk, however, make it their life's mission to treat their work as the only acceptable comics out there and nag creators and companies to censor anything that's too racy for them, and it's for that reason that we bitch about them.
>They still gave a shit about Squirrel Girl after New Avengers
Erica Henderson is the worst artist I have ever seen get a job at marvel. And that's including every shit tier artist Marvel and DC had n their bullpen from the 70s-90s.
Her art literally smells like garbage.
Christ... the amount of bullshit needed to pretend that this isn't garbage.
Whenever I buy anything from my LCS, I have to resist the urge to ask "So, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl... does anybody BUY that?"
Did anything happen in that comic? I lost interest after #2, when they'd literally gotten the team together in the penultimate page.
Didn't Gamergate get hijacked by that asshole who runs Breitbart?
See, I still place Liefeld as being juuuust a teensy bit worse. I don't consider either of them to be the absolute worst comic book artist ever, but they're in the top 5 at least.
People are still waiting for the Hogan/Gawker decision to hit so they can be sure nobody hires anyone from Kotaku ever again by spreading their dirty dealing through Deep Freeze.
