Oldfag here who's been reading X-Men stuff since the 1980s.
I liked her in her original form, when she was this kind of classy upper-class British psychic. Once she became what she is now, I feel that most writers had no fucking clue what to do with her which would be both interesting and true to the character. I mean, what you basically had was this person who was 1/2 classy upper-class British woman and 1/2 ambiguously-defined oriental stereotype with no defined background, backstory or substance, and that latter half is mostly what was on display. How the fuck do you write something like that in a manner which is remotely identifiable to any reader?
Uncanny X-Force is the first and only time since, like 1990 that I didn't actively dislike this version of her. I felt like Remender was able to create a vision of the character which rung true and had a legitimate emotional core to her.
Aside from that, though, what you've mostly got is this weird artifact of Jim Lee's desire to draw a sexy ninja character and Chris Claremont's creepy transformation fetish who's coasted on visuals for decades.
original Psylocke was just a purple flavor instead of red flavor Jean Grey tho. I mean she had no distinguishable characteristics that made her stand out from any other "stand back and do telepathy" character.
>>79793832 Except that Jean was a founding member of the X-Men, while Betsy was untested and untrusted, and Wolverine let her know frequently in that period that he didn't give a shit about her. This was later remedied when she basically soloed Sabretooth (when beating Sabretooth was a pretty impressive feat).
She also happened to be on the team during the Australia era, which was the best "run" on X-Men ever. That makes her good by default.
>>79794419 Lobdell's Uncanny run was better than Claremont's two additional attempts, Davis's, Casey's, Austen's, Brubaker's, Fraction's, and Bendis's. He's on the short-list of mediocre-to-decent writers who have been on the title (Claremont's first run, Seagle, Gillen).
>>79796271 Jim Lee just likes drawing sexy women, that's all there is to it. He gave Huntress an exposed belly and refused to draw Cassandra Cain because she looked like a shoe. Old Betsy with the armor and the cape wasn't nearly sexy enough for him.
>>79793529 >Chris Claremont's creepy transformation fetish who's coasted on visuals for decades. What I've realized about many of the old Claremont stories is that there are so many physical changes to main characters that would have stayed permanent if not for some magical wave of a psychic finger, or a machine made by Forge or aliens making everything right off panel at the last minute. >Eric the Red re-ages Magneto into an adult >Storm and Emma Frost switching minds (Sebastian Shaw totally fucked Emma possessed Storm's body) >X-Men turning into Brood and getting cured by magical space whale soul crystal >Professor X turning into a Brood and getting a clone body that the Starjammers just happened to have on their ship >Colossus trapped in cooled molten steel til the Morlock Healer healed him >Karma gets morbidly obese and loses the weight on a walk through a magical Asgardian desert >Jean getting tentacle arms and Banshee's mouth fused shut by Masque, only to be cured by a machine by Forge
Makes me wonder about how often permanent changes affected the story like Illyana and Rachel's arcs, and the results of the Mutant Massacre.
>>79793275 It's a costume based on Elektra's (because apparently a small minority of female Hand ninja dress that way officially), which Frank Miller is on-record as saying was his jackoff fantasy when he was too poor to afford porn or whores and too busy drawing Daredevil to have time for a loving relationship, which would also be impossible because women are whores who make sammiches.
>>79794147 You're literally looking at something Frank Miller drew and jacked off over sometime in the early 80s, modified to make it even less concealing/more visually distinct from Elektra herself.
You saying Frank wouldn't fantasize about strippers? Are you calling Frank Miller a homosexual? What's wrong with you? Why do you hate America?
>>79793275 First I liked her for being fapbait, then I liked her because her Psiblade assist was invincible and covered Magneto well in the fighting games, then going back and reading her story I appreciated how she's just a big pisstake of mass media in general.
>>79801795 It started out as one of Claremont's usual body-horror stories. Hell, originally, there wasn't even a bodyswap. Betsy had just been cosmetically altered. That's why Wolverine recognized her by scent. Claremont would have certainly changed Betsy back in due course.
But this is during the period where Jim Lee's star was rising and Claremont's was fading. Lee got more and more influence on the book while Claremont was feeling increasingly cut off and unappreciated. So Claremont ended up leaving and Lee was permitted to indulge in his Jim Lee-ness.
>>79803648 Post Body Swap, she throws herself all over Cyclops before Jean put a stop to that shit like an issue before her and Scott are married but after that it's just Warren and the Famtomexs really, Claremont had attached Betsy with Rachel Summers during his last Uncanny run but nothing explicit was ever shown
pre body swap she had 0 charisma so she only had Doug Ramsey lusting after her, that never went anywhere since he was a New Mutant and he died before Betsy got popular.
