Is this the most overrated comic of the modern age?
>>
>>79711722
Yes.
>>
>>79711722
No.
>>
>>79711722
Maybe.
>>
That or The Walking Dead.

I wouldn't have nearly as much of an issue with these comics if they were the entry point for new comics readers like they're praised to be, but the people who pick up Saga or TWD tend to only pick up Saga or TWD.
>>
>>79711722
I don't know.
>>
>>79711722
no. its pretty good.
lumberjanes or ratqueens is the most overrated.
>>
Is this the most overdone thread of modern /co/?
>>
Is calling something 'overrated' the most shallow criticism in the English language?
>>
>>79711767
is TWD actually over rated though? as in, winning awards and stuff?
yes the sales are fairly inexplicable, and overinflated for its quality. but many comics are like that.

Like Vision is low sales, but highly rated.

Definitely
>>
>>79711825
>TWD selling lower than Vision
Nope.
>>
>>79711804
No, it's a close runner up to "I hate it because of the fandom." Although, they are closely related.
>>
>>79711801
No, that'd be *waaaah tumblr waaaah* threads.
>>
>>79711767
At least TWD doesn't try to be 2deep4you.
>>
>>79711851
That's all most Saga threads turn into though
>>
>>79711801
OP here. I just got done reading this and thought it wasn't as good as it's been hyped up to be. I didn't know that this was a common thread.
>>
>>
>>79711722
Can you repeat the question?
>>
You're not the boss of me now
>>
>>79711966
>confusing fanwank with a title getting nonstop glowing press three years into its run
Multiversity may be overhyped on the boards, but it's not cleaning up "best-of" lists every year like Saga is.

>>79711916
It's not bad, it's just clearly on the Christopher Nolan-spectrum of "people who know nothing about the medium think this is the peak."
>>
>>79711849
I disagree
Do you know how long it took me to realize gravity falls wasn't just a show for pedos?
>>
Has /co/ ever articulated an actual critique of Saga beyond "tumblr" "it has too many gay people" and "normies like it"
>>
>>79711916
This. It is bad, but it isn't as bad as it was disapointing. I'm still trying to understand what they were trying to achieve with Saga's universe.

/co/ in a nutshell.
>>
>>79711966
It is severely underrated outside of /co/.
>>
>>79712110
I've done it plenty of times and usually it all boils down to how unimaginative it is for a sci-fi book, how unoriginal it is for a romance book, and how BKV is hack who relies heavily on every character constantly saying something "clever" and ending every issue with a cliffhanger.
>>
>>79712120
Morrison in general is underrated outside of /co/. Most people don't like him because understand the concepts he's trying to portray or they just think he's a schizo who just happens to have been allowed to write some of the biggest titles in comics.
>>
>>79712165

>ending every issue with a cliffhanger

with a medium like monthly comics I don't think this is a negative
>>
>>79712181
It gets old really fast. Cliffhangers lose their effect when you do it every single time and BKV does it with all of his books.
>>
>>79712110
I don't know if it's been done before, but I'll give it a shot.

>>79712165
yeah that's not too far off. It's the worst aspects of Lost and Twilight rolled in to one, with enough sex-positive/progressive lipservice to really fire up "the youth." The characterization amounts to "it was in Fiona's sketchbook!" and kind of ends there. It parades cynical, bottom of the barrels emotional idiocy as "human drama, because it caters to an audience that can't stand moral aspirations.

>>79712181
>not being able to tell hooks and cliffhangers apart
>>
>>79712167
That's not innacurate at all though.
>>
>>79712167
The only thing I personally don't like about Morrison is that is seems like all of his stories end up being some grand allegory for the concept of being good, or a statement on the nature of comics themselves.

I mean, I get wanting to tell that story, but when it's just the same kinds of stories told again and again, it becomes too much for me.
>>
>>79711722
BKV can't write and clearly doesn't like the medium much. And don't get me started on Staples, she's an okay artist but there are hundreds of artists alive right now that you'd insult by even comparing to her.
>>
>>79712331
Not that this exempts him from that criticism, but I think a lot of the "sameness" comes from Morrison's desire to make all of his stories "stand-alone." If he stopped trying to bake the big picture in to every comic he wrote, it might be a bit more sublime, but instead every story has to end with a "THIS IS THE NATURE OF STORIES" monologue.
>>
>>79711777
Can you repeat the question?
>>
>>79712331
His concept of good vs evil, I love it since he's the only writer that still loves to do that in a genre that has now every villain being grey.

But I agree on most of his stories being meta, even though I don;t hate it as much. But his storytelling is still intriguing to cover it.
>>
>>79712353
>And don't get me started on Staples

This is one thing I don't get, the praise she gets on this book. I'm not trying to be contrarian or anything but she's a decent artist but the stuff I read about her would make you think she's future hall of fame/GOAT/Alex Ross tier.
>>
>>79712510
>Alex Ross tier
Overrated? That seems about right. :^)
>>
>>79711722
No.

The Walking Dead still holds that title.
>>
All entry level books are overrated. But this holds the title for being called as a great piece of art and a ground breaking book.

>>
I'll take the overrated Image indie darling over the same old Marvel/DC capes shit any time of the day.
>>
Sagas problem is all the characters except Marco, The Will and Robot IV are shit tier.
>>
>>79712447
YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME NOW
>>
>>79712165
B-but it deconstructs romance! They husband and wife g-got a divorce! And the wife even has a shallow view of romance from romance books! How subversive!

personally I think the book took a nosedive once they got the tree spaceship. robot remained as the only interesting character
>>
>>79712510
She is more suited for a SoL more grounded in reality. She doesn't have the imagination for a book filled with alien races in alien locales.
>>
>>79712591

I can't believe The Wicked and The Divine sold 100K copies.
>>
>>79712510
Yea, with artists like Marco Rudy, Francis Manapul, JH Williams, Frank Quitely, and Mike Del Mundo currently working in the industry, it's weird how Staples keeps finding her way onto Best Of lists. Her understanding of sequential art is "functional" at best.
>>
>>79712649
I stopped giving a fuck about the book when the "High as fuck" splash page came around.
>>
>>79712889
>Francis Manapul
lol
>>

>Most people don't like him because understand the concepts he's trying to portray
I understand them perfectly and I still don't like him. Reason being, I'm not impressed with him jangling his big, meta concepts in my face like a set of car keys. Most Grant stories I've read seems to expect you to just be blown away by the ideas he's jabbering on about and the narrative suffers as a result.
>>
>>79712234
>It parades cynical, bottom of the barrels emotional idiocy as "human drama, because it caters to an audience that can't stand moral aspirations.

Define "modern age" for comics first.

>>
>>79714047
That's not modern age dude...

Modern Age is anything after the 90's comic crash, though we could I've heard we're in a Digital Age now too.
>>
>>79714176
>the digital age
I hate that. I hope actual books never stop getting printed.
>>
Overrated? For sure. Bad? Far from it. It's a really entertaining book, but the fans play it up to be some genius space opera.
>>
>>79712924
I stopped around that time as well. The last I remember is the guy stressed as fuck because she was high as fuck every day, he throws her the groceries bag at her and she is three issues like "OMG HE ABUSED ME"

dunno how the book fares after that
>>
The first few volumes were good with a lot of promise. After it went on break it had an incredible downturn in quality.

Art's still great, though.
>>
>>79711722
Its okay, but fuck me it tries to be edgy.

Everyone swears like a sailor, most of the people are either OK or utter cunts.

But that seems to be most comics now. No one seems to have snagged a good new idea.

Everything is either, lots of swearing, or TUMBLR the comic.

Look at half the Top Comics of 2015 lists, its mostly the same crap over and over,.
>>
>>79712649
I dropped it after Marko's mother fell in love with that author guy for seemingly no reason. Does everyone in this fucking book have to be in love with another character?
>>
If Saga and The Walking Dead are the most overrated then what is the most underrated? I'd say something by Valiant and maybe Mind MGMT
>>
>>79713949
>I'm too stupid to understand words
Good job
>>
>>79715588
>what is the most underrated?

Where? On /co/? In sales? On other forums?
>>
>>79715588
I'd say Rachel Rising. It has a lot of what people ask for in "female" comics, yet no one ever acknowledges it.
>>
>>79715974
I loved the start of that, then it just went downhill fast with the witch and that demon shit.

>>
>>79712510
To be fair, even though I really hate her drawing style (but to be fair I hate most of this webcomic style in every other comics), the designs and the world themselves fit well. The style could be a lot better but she definitely have some imagination and there are no major flaws in the way she draws.
I can understand why she's getting so much praise, because she's (cute) trying to create a visually coherent universe with "not completely serious sci-fi" designs in a story that is not primarily a satire.
The colors are blend and the trait is boring, but well, that's the case for most of American comic books artists, mainstream or (especially these days) indies. And yeah I know she's Canadian, whatever.
Good art is in the other side of the Atlantic !

None of the characters have a moral code beyond "I'm a selfish fuck" because that's all millennials can relate to.
