think so never actually cared about those hastag fest, twitter/youtube celebs or random memes of the week also living in a poor town and getting internet after the 2008 made it even worse since i was always behind
I was never really "with it", per se, but yes, I find myself more and more disconnected from today's youth. I had a sudden realisation of how old I was when I saw that kids have replaced the word "cool" with "fire".
>>79108926 It started when I started a new job with a bunch of guys fresh out of college. I'm 29. These guys were 22-24. Noticed there wasn't a coffee pot in the office. Brought my own coffee pot from home to share with everybody. None of these little shits knew how to make coffee with a coffee machine. Also, what the hell is up with everything being "dank" all of a sudden?
Yes. I hate the "normies" with their desire to turn the whole world into a safe space, but I also hate the shitlords of 4chan who also want the world to be a safe space, just for different ideals. I don't know why I still come here. I guess because I don't want to go to any other forums, either.
>>79108926 I look at vidya and comics and I realize yes. The things I grew up loving have changed so fundamentally as to be recognizable. It really hit home when the FF7 remake trailer came out and it looked like an action RPG and will be episodic.
>forced to change schools >experimental scoliosis operation >the fat kid >can't even not be fat kid because due to operation told not to do PE for three years so I sit while everyone is active >always into vidya, nobody else is
>>79111373 Nigger have you seen other forums? 4chan isn't the best place, it's just the least bad.
>banned for disagreeing with me >hope u got :tenbux: >teehee I'm a girl, that means if you disagree with me, I can send my white knight legion to downvote everything you post >brony avatars >enormous signatures full of naruto >You have been warned! Reason: profanity on an underage-friendly forum >my registration date is 2005 and I have 100,000,000 posts, while your regdate is a paltry 2014 and your postcount is a pathetic 240, that means my opinions hold more weight than yours >lol i suck mod cock xD >you have reached your daily posting limit >banned for having an animated gif for an avatar >You have been banned. Reason: saw your posts talking shit about us on another forum and matched your e-mail to your account on this forum >your karma level must be 10,000 to post in this section
Every once in a while I get tired of 4chan's shit and I venture out into the wilds of the internet and join a "proper" forum, and it always ends in tears, blood, and fire. Internet forums are cancer, and 4chan is just a harmless but unsightly tumor by comparison.
>>79108926 Turned 30 recently. It's happened to me in some ways, but the ways it hasn't are even worse. Halfway through talking with a girl at work about how much the both of us are looking forward to Persona 5 I remembered that's she's a teenager, an actual goddamn teenager, and that I was 30 and talking to her about Atlas Japanese High School Waifu Simulator 5.
>>79113560 You saw that, but teenagers were hopping all over Steven Colbert's dick when he was hosting his show on Comedy Central, and he was over 40 when he hit that stride. Old white dudes will always be kinda cool as long as they can present themselves as funny and intelligent.
>>79114262 No, but let me tell you this. kids today google, not giggle. they play angry birds instead of getting angry AT birds. they all have an ipad but no iq. not even one. they playstation but they never play station. i.e. one pretending to be a train and the others pretending to be different trains or low paid maintenance workers. they’re obsessed with one direction, rather than enjoying all eight directions equally. facebook… but unable to face… a book. or a hoop with a stick. a lost generation. the tv show.
>>79113270 I know that feel. Other forums are complete shit now.
>joined a gaming forum a couple years ago >guy constantly posts offtopic shit and derails but he's popular so mods don't do anything >tell him to fuck off and stop shitposting when he started derailing the only good thread in weeks with his stupidity >stalked for weeks by him and his fanboys and had my posts downvoted by at least three people every time
Voting systems in forums are fucking cancer. All it does in incentivize circlejerking and cults of personality instead of discussion.
>>79110464 My parents are Boomers and they don't understand this shit. Hell my mother is like the biggest self-hating boomer on the planet. She has like zero respect for ANY Boomers and thinks they sold the country out in the biggest way. Anyway, the concept of Safe Spaces is completely alien to her. Not even in a 'lol that's stupid' way, but a 'what the fuck does this even mean' way. You're a generation off.
>>79114805 My parents were boomers and my mom wouldn't let me cross the street by myself til I was sixteen, and only because I had enough and just started doing everything she told me not to. These are the kind of people that news networks thrive on since they can use scare tactics to make them buy or believe anything.
>>79109320 I'm kinda glad I didn't get out of the dial-up ghetto until recently. I don't know what the fuck is up with this obsession with YouTube celebrities and Let's Plays and, I don't even know what the fuck, YouTube poops?
>>79115037 Youtube poop has been around for at least a decade now. It's basically surrealist humor made from weird, janky editing. You either find it funny or you don't - I've never seen anyone with a mild opinion on it.
I dunno; looking back, my mother occasionally tried following some parenting trends like "don't watch/read/play this you're too young for it" as leading Authority of the day said it was the right thing to do, but as she never really believed in the concepts herself, it was pretty half-hearted. Once I was able to clearly articulate that I could tell fantasy from reality that all stopped. I guess she was an exception and not the norm? No one else in my age/peer group does any of this stupid shit.
>>79114805 Most millennials are the children of Generation X parents. Not the "hip" GenX who were all cool young adults in the '90s but the ones that were born during the 1960s, came of age as adults in the 1980s and then started having children either in the '80s or '90s. They're the ones who pussified the current generations immensely and then it's going to continue as millennials are becoming parents to Generation Z or whatever the fuck we're on now.
The Boomers suck, sure, but all they did was protest and/or fight in Vietnam, do a lot of drugs, then sell out all of their beliefs in the '80s for money and doing a lot of drugs.
Happened. I like it. First of all being 100% oblivious to twitter/tumblr/My Internet Persona stuff is really comfy.
I take things slowly when it comes to media and am basically immune to good or bad hype. Catching up to things late lets you watch everything in a binge instead of waiting for episode by episode. Did all of Breaking Bad a year after release, watch Adventure Time a season at a time instead of weekly, etc.
And there's kind of a really weird jaded, cynical elitism fans have these days about things. Like I finally tried Dark Souls 1 in December. Loved it, beat it, got DS2 at the end of the Steam Sale, loved it, beat it. Looking forward to DS3 on release day with a bro.
But half the regular threads and vet players I see talk about it have colossal hate boners because they've beaten the game 10 times over and they can't unsee the flaws. And I'm just over here like "yay, what fun. can't wait for April." It's rare for me to hit something on opening day and even if I didn't plan to, no big deal. Too much work and life. Hell, something like a long RPG takes 3-4 weeks to clear as the only entertainment option I have!
>>79115059 >Snapchat app Holy shit this, I'm 23 and one they some of the girls in my class started taking selfies and group photos, they took a picture of me and I asked what where they doing and show me some filter thing that put rainbows or some ghost face on your pictures, shit didn't work on me because of my emotionless face.
Tried to download that to look what it was about and nothing made sense, there was like a page of bullshit news and a chat but the whole thing is just about taking pictures that erase themselves after some days.
Holy shit that and Streamers. I can't believe that people found a way to out-beta being an awkward little nerd in school by pretending an e-celeb is their friend while they watch them grind fucking Hearthstone or something.
>>79115242 Yeah I understood though didn't really use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram but Snapchat just went too far. Just what is the point when all those others exist and you can get pictures at your own leisure?
I'm gonna be 21 soon and I'm just barely getting around to checking facebook every once and a while to see things posted by a co-workers/old friends and then I get off when I see THAT. you know that one cringeworthy normal fag thing/image/meme. How can you even tell if you were with it before anyway? Maybe some of us just were never with it and always hated almost everything.
>>79115416 That's more of a sign that they grew up poor than you not being with it. Pretty much anyone 15+ would have seen them around the house even if they never used them. DVD players were still expensive for normal people until like 2003.
>>79115407 That's actually another example of me not being with it. I left /co/ for a while around 2011-2013 so I completely don't understand or find the meme about seeing loss in everything funny even though I was here before that when we simply shit on it and Buckley daily for being bad and lazy artistically.
>>79115777 >>79115795 You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. The loss comic itself is from 2008 and I understand references to it because I was here for when we shit on it. But the meme about "hurr I see it" in every grid pattern is so new that I missed whenever it became a thing.
You watch a video of somebody else playing a video game.
Now I can sort of understand using a LP as a sort of demo for a game. Or to see how to weather a part that completely ruins and confuses you. Or even just to see somebody play and clear a super esoteric game that you'd otherwise never play.
But nah man. There are large numbers of millennials(and older) who will watch somebody play a videogame from start to finish. That's it. They don't know the guy. They can't really interact with them. They don't even want to play the game themselves. They watch other people play it. And for a lot of them... the appeal is to pretend the personality is their friend or some shit. Not so bad on Lps, but then you go to video game streamers...
So you have people who LP video games that never fucking end(DOTA 2, League of Legends, MMORPGS, Hearthstone, etc) and you can watch them play that and they have people donate them money for it. For playing a game. And sometimes they donate extra money because the streamer will read out something you ask them to or address and thank you on their stream! SO PEOPLE DONATE MORE AND COMPETE TO BE RECOGNIZED THE MOST BY THEIR IMAGINARY FRIEND AND AAAAAAAAAAAAA
Like Jesus Christ P.T. Barnum's corpse hasn't stopped laughing for years.
>>79115905 I prefer the Game Grumps when it comes to let's plays for those reasons. No bullshit, they just play games and talk. The banter between Arin and Danny is comedy fucking gold. I don't even care about the game, and neither do they. It's just something to do while trading jokes and stories.
I know I'm not with it when I see "meme" used as an adjective if some /v/ crossposter doesn't like something. >>79115926 It is waifu faggotry and it's pretty generic. Watched it without knowing anything about it cause a friend said she wanted me to watch it with her.
The show just looks unfinished and is in need of some shading. Don't even know why there's a general dedicated to it.
>>79115905 I can understand it on some level - I watch a couple League streams rarely when I'm too drained from work to play it but still wanna see it, but fuck ever donating money to those idiots. None of them are worth it.
>>79115875 Ctrl+Alt+Del was an humor comic. It was mediocre even by its time but people hung on it. The authour made an unexpected strip about one of the dudes gf having a miscarriage. Nobody liked it, people jumped the shark and the meme was born.
The joke is not miscarriage itself but tim buckley.
>>79115959 I saw a few of the previews for it a long time ago when RT was just starting to make it, and it looked so generic I couldn't be bothered. It was like, "oh hey, this is literally every anime ever", and I moved on.
>>79115977 There are a lot of really subpar shows/series that have massive fanbases for no reason. It still baffles me how Sonic has such a massive fandom despite not having a decent game, not even a good one - a decent one - since the nineties. The horse cartoon is just as baffling to me.
>>79116220 >They moved to FNAF, undertale etc I've noticed. I've heard of people who legit will never play FNAF in their lives but will pay to see someone else play that mediocre piece of shit. How Jumpscares: The Game got four fucking sequels is beyond my comprehension.
>>79116435 They're both pretty fucking cancer. I don't mind the 4chan memes themselves so much as the fact that people post them so much it becomes a broken record. Honestly, 4chan putting the twitter nigger memes on the filter probably made it worse since it made those dumbasses realize that they were getting under peoples' skin with it.
Having a discussion without spamming memes like a fucking moron must be hard for younger people. That's all I can think of.
>>79116618 but i should feel happy..i mean aside from those 3 people...i beraly talk to the other folks.
and for example here in 4chan..it's weird couse i'm here since 2008... i use to spend most of my time on /b/ and some other boards...then like 2 years ago i spend my time here and since a couple of months i can't stand /generals/ and i don't wanna go to other forums because i think they will have more shitposting
that... i use to get a laugh with shitposting now is ..unfunny i mean not unfunny i feel it lacks something
>>79116541 >>79116435 I'll probably get cries of "muh seekrit club" but I fucking hate seeing memes outside 4chan. Used to be when I got tired of that here, I could go elsewhere. Now it's everywhere. Same with shitposting.
>>79116711 some frames of animation in skullgirls were changed to less blatantly show the pantsu of the girls
people upset about it were saying it was censorship in an attempt to win favour for the, at the time, floundering kickstarter for Indivisble by way of the progressive journalism entwined with video games
people who weren't were saying that the frames illogically shortened the girls' skirts and that their pantsu shouldn't be showing. they also said that the game still had plenty of fanservice that wasn't removed
I'm not picking sides here, that's just what happened
>>79116711 They removed some panty shots from certain character animations.
Different guy here, but I don't even think censorship is the issue with that. The issue is that the devs are being disingenuous. One of Skullgirls' selling points was being the "sexy 2D girl fightan game," so if you remove the sexy, what's the damn point? You can't just pretend that shit wasn't part of the design doc from day 1.
If they were getting shit about it, they should have just pulled the Takaki/Kamitani card. Life and hometown, motherfucker.
>>79116765 I do too. It's not the "seekrit club" aspect of it, I just don't like how prolific they're becoming. People spam this shit everywhere now like they think it's cool when it just makes everyone look like a fucking retard.
Shitposting was never a 4chan exclusive thing though, sadly. I don't know when or what happened but lately everyone on the internet tries to act like shitposting is what you're supposed to do now instead of just being adults and talking about things or ignoring them if you don't like them.
In terms of what's popular and most current events, it happened by the time I was 24 or 25, so 4 or 5 years ago. I hate everything in the modern age -- the movies, the cartoons, the music, the news, etc. I wish the '90s never ended and 9/11 never happened. I'm too out of touch with this world and anything of worth that I could've done would've only been possible if the last 15 years never happened.
but we have been toguether since 2010..there times when one of us is down and the other not..so we help eachother a lot and he is helping me a lot..
so the thing that keeps me sad is that i use to think when i was 19..i was going to have tons of friend like i use to have and keep talking to them...and i said it wont happen to me..and now i only have 3 loveones who are the only people i speak..daily..without them i don't have no one to relate
I am 33 with a 25 year old gf and an 18 year old lover. The stark reality of having to keep up with all the apps ( kik, sc, etc.) has me exhausted, the slang is beginning to sound stupid to me, plus the differences in day to day experiences with both of them has me questioning my sanity to the point of constantly asking myself, what's the point? I mean everything must be worth it for some reason. so, yes it is happening as we speak to me.
>>79108926 A lot of 4chan seems alien to me now. I think the only reason I still come here is force of habit and the fact that every other message board/forum is even worse. Black People Twitter speak is everywhere, website wars, "Wow that meme was literally reddit: the post" and ironic shitposting in general, meme as an adjective, and the general shift away from discussion being the goal and towards shitposting and "funny" jokes being the goal. It's a poisonous mindset, and it hurts the actual discussions. Priorities are all messed up. People should go to an image board about [subject] to discuss [subject] instead of trading stupid jokes with a vague air of [subject] lingering in the distance. What's worse is that I find a lot of people will start a thread that's just pretending to be on-topic when in reality they just want to make jokes and trade memes/reaction images. See: Mario 64 threads on /v/ in the last 24 hours.
Some boards are worse than others, but this attitude really underlies the whole of 4chan to some degree, and I really don't get it.
>>79117858 >I am 33 with a 25 year old gf and an 18 year old lover. I can't even imagine fooling around with an 18 year old at this point. At least a 21 year old you can hang out with at bars. Doesn't help that I'm a beer and booze geek.
>>79113602 Shit. Kinda reminds me of something. >at animu con >already feel old >in line for an autograph from Dean Venture's VA >talking a bit to girl in front of me >she freaks out when a Capt Jack cosplayer walks by, takes a pic >I say I saw an Edward Scissorhands one earlier >say I've already wanted to go as Depp as Hunter in Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas >she gives me a blank stare, says she's never seen it >it was then I realized she was like sixteen if that >and I really need to stop going to anime cons
Of course last ones I went to I was just hanging out with friends who ran booths in dealer's room and artist alley.
>>79119165 not him, but I find it easier to relate to younger people, mostly because all my friends grew the fuck up, had kids, and aren't allowed to do shit. So they're the ones being Grandpa Simpson and I'm still trying out new shit.
Also, because i really hate asking anyone on a date and it's usually just younger chicks who are more direct in being interested in me. So i tend to learn about new stuff through them and their friends.
Also also, seems most older chicks are taken anyway.
34, going on 35 here, btw. Feels good knowing I'm always mistakened for being 10 years younger and without being a shrimplet.
>>79119998 there is a cultural movement against the 'violence solves everything' attitude of media that people grew up in, moving instead towards 'being the bigger person and understanding one another leads to greater satisfaction in life'
>>79115905 It's the same appeal as like, Mystery Science Theatre, or at least it was. It's entertaining commentary.
Though I admit things have shifted and I'm much more out of touch with LPers than I was. I think it was the switch from edited YouTube playthroughs being the norm to this twitch, livestreaming stuff, which gets disturbingly close to camgirl stuff (including some actual overlap there). The LP stuff I watched the most of was HellFire Comms, and it was with it's increased focus on streaming that I eventually ended up getting out of touch with the whole thing. Back when in the justintv days I was actually really into the livestream, I ended up becoming a moderator and still have NTom64 and most of the other HFC members and mods on skype, but I dunno, it was around the point where it switched to Twitch that things just got... different. Like I said, it feels like camgirl stuff to me now.
>>79119998 you're kind of young to kind f grasp something like undertale. Undertale is far from the best thing ever and it definitely has it's flaws. but much like earthbound or Killer 7, it's one of those things where you know you'll never play anything like it ever again.
It plays with the video game medium like not many other games do.
>>79120138 >I'm thirty and yes. Music's changed, 4 Chan's changed.
yes and no. Music has changed, but it's still the same. The top charts are still easily digestible repetitive pop songs (have been for decades), thouugh not exclusive to 4chan, people have always been shit heads on the internet spouting memes
in fact the Smashing pumpkins were on of the first internet memes with this song, see if you can figure out why.
>>79115905 Depends on the LP's. People like Purge who play dota two not only show higher level games he also teaches people how to be better at the game, be it different heros, how to ward, how to itemize and so on and so forth.
Maximillian dood does the same with fighting games.
Some LP'ers are just fun to watch because they're good at cracking jokes during game play or find silly obscure games.
The heart of it though is making a community and getting to be a part of it. it's more than just :watch guy play game"
Now, I don't absolutely love either. I appreciate and like both, but I recognize that they both, particularly steven universe, have their flaws, and certainly don't associate with the fanbase of either.
But far more than any sort of personal like of them, I just have to appreciate how impressive they are. How much heart and soul and passion and love for their mediums put into them. Ambition and skill in storytelling that's incredibly rare to see. I genuinely cannot fathom how someone could honestly not appreciate either as good. Not personally enjoy sure, but I truly don't get how someone couldn't see the value in either of them, or honestly think them bad. I really really don't.
>>79115059 >>79115242 I use snapchat only to subscribe to the San Antonio Spurs and NBA players like Hassan Whiteside. The spurs post interesting stuff like players warming up, them doing community shit, etc. Hassan Whiteside is just funny.
I don't understand why people will send each other 10+ pictures in one day though.
>>79115953 That's because they got the bantz. LPs are a fantastic vehicle for banter between two or three people. The Giantbomb crew has been doing what are essentially LPs for years, and they're entertaining as fuck. Gamegrumps are funny and got dat hot bantz.
But then you've got people like PewDiePie and all his rip offs that DON'T have bantz. It's just one dude screaming at a screen. How is that entertaining? How can people enjoy LPers that are solo acts?
>>79108926 I actually like getting older. It's interesting to see the way the world and things like entertainment change over time -- sometimes more interesting to see what doesn't change, or what comes around again.
I'm only 24 and have already disowned any popular trend of the last couple of years. You youngins can hang out in your overpriced coffee shops with your "swag" wearing your "crocs", listening to whiny vocalists with a 2-note range, and buying a new phone every year. I'm done, I'm out. I didn't like The Amazing Spider-Man, social networks were fun for like 1 day, and "cool" is how you carry yourself, not how many rich tycoons swindled you into buying poorly made crap! I'm sorry, the internet has made me pissed off.
>>79116753 >Can't stand generals. I-it's so convenient. I can go in a board and look for a thread pertaining to the information I need. And certain games and series constantly update so there's always something to discuss. At first I didn't like how /co/ handled when something isn't being updated that the generals are banned, but now I think it's probably the best choice and compromise we have. At the very least you wait until page 10.
I just don't understand the appeal of Instagram. It's only made me realize how narcissistic and vain people have become. Or maybe they've always been like that and I just haven't been paying attention until now.
>>79108926 No-one on /co/ was ever it. You don't spend your life on an anonymous website because you fit in with the crowd. The mysterious ways of the youths annoyed me when I was a youth and they annoy me still.
I don't either, but that's the appeal. You can pretend that you're taking part in an activity without actually taking part in it. Playing games requires concentration and effort, watching a stream just takes bandwidth.
>>79130766 But in a sports game you can watch professionals play the game at a level you'd never achieve and be impressed. Or follow your local club and feel a sense of connection to the community.
But watching some random person who isn't particularly good at a game play through it on Youtube? It's not the same.
The equivalent would be watching a top-levle competitive gaming match or having fun with your friends playing through a single-player game. Those I can understand. But LPs are like watching a video of some guys you don't play an amateur game of soccer in the park, it's banal.
