>But the buzz behind the scenes on Bernthal’s take on the character has been pretty positive, and that’s why there’s talk of him getting his own series.
>Bernthal has received high praise from producers, writers, fellow actors, and executives alike for his portrayal of the gun-toting vigilante who thinks the only way to combat the criminal element is with lethal force.
>"[Jon Bernthal's] Punisher is extraordinarily memorable, in every way," Marvel TV Executive Vice President Jeph Loeb told ComicBook.com earlier this week.
Season 1 of Punisher: Storyline and actors.
Frank usually takes out hordes of fodder, then 1 or 2 "named" badguys who are technically throw-aways.
Either way, this is the kinda series I'm looking forward too, if the rumours are true. It's getting around quite a bit, even facebook has it on their front page news listings.
I want to know the secret of Frank's staying power, you'd think a character that deals in absolutes, and shoots conveniently the right ethnic groups would be long gone by the end of the 80s.
>Frank spends his time on Daredevil taking out criminal scum
>the first half of his own show, he does the same thing
>at some point, SHIELD becomes aware of what he's doing
>somebody shows up to recruit him as deniable ops for use against threats too heavy for normal forces, but not big enough to warrant the Avengers
>bring in C- and D-list villains, maybe a few B-listers to set shit up for others
Punisher works as a guest in other's titles, but there's no depth to someone who just kills a bunch of mafia goons they create for a small story arc. It's fucking stupid to give him a show.
>but there's no depth to someone who just kills a bunch of mafia goons they create for a small story arc. It's fucking stupid to give him a show.
It worked for four seasons of Strike Back.
The funny thing is that the Punisher is not a unique character as far as comicbook movies go.
It's hard to find one that doesn't kill the bad guy so the Punisher has no special impact like he does in comics.
It worked for The Parker books and men's adventure novels. I think too many people are used to character driven narratives, Frank is as genre fiction as it gets, I'm surprised writers managed to keep his introspection for so long.
I mean John Wick and Taken showed people still have interest in that kind of hyper-masculine walking murder tank stereotype, they just need to be better at martial arts then they were in the 70's.
I kind of want an arc with Yorkie. Then end S1 with this fella being called in to take out Frank.
I actually really like this idea.
Make the Punisher more of an off-screen force-of-nature. Have the detectives as the main characters who deal with the more human elements of the story while the Punisher just fucks shit up.
Sounds like Ruckas take. Punisher was a ghost in the first half of that run. When he made his appearances, he was scary as hell. The bar where he first shows up was fucking awesome.
>one of the cops working the Frank Desk has a friend in IA
>IA cop is investigating a thoroughly-crooked cop, but he's being protected too heavily for any progress to be made
>Frank Desk cop "accidentally" leaves the file out
cop shows nowadays either give the cops complete moral high ground or make them the worst people in any situation. a shade of grey would be nice.
>Some Punk tries to melee Punisher
>Slows down because its filmed with 400fps camera
>We get narration on what martial art technique that is, with slideshow pictures fading by, how its unperfected, and how Frank will counter it hard
>Narrative ends 1/3 into the scene
>Slowly speeds up
>It happens as predicted
I think each episode needs 2-3 like that. Not about martial arts either, but cover, reloading, how to shoot, how to move, or espionage.
That would be a pretty neat stylistic touch. It could be overdone but done properly would let us see that Frank's not just doing this half assed. He's prepared.
Imagine a scene where Frank's in one room and a half dozen thugs are charging down the hallway. It slows down and Frank starts narrating a list of chemicals. Just as the thugs get to the door, Frank's homemade explosive goes off.
>"That kid thinks he's holding an AK-47. He's not. He's holding a cheap Chinese knockoff, and just like every other cheap Chinese knockoff, it looks the same, and nothing else. Safety's stuck. I can see it. He can't. Won't get the chance to find out. Because this isn't a cheap Chinese knockoff. You want to kill someone, you go with brand name."
> michael clarke duncan is dead and will never play barracuda
Most good Frank stories aren't really about Frank. At most they can analyze the type of crazy shit that has to be in your mind to turn you into the Punisher. Frank is the slasher in slasher movies except he always wins in the end. Jason will never stop killing sexy teens and Frank will never stop killing criminals.
Instead, the stories are about everyone around Frank. They're about the kinds of evil in this world that would make you wish a guy like Frank was real. They're about the good guys who are maybe a bad day away from being the Punisher. They're about the good guys who could never be the Punisher. Victims and bystanders. And how they all react to and deal with the most prolific serial killer of all time.
It's also nice to throw in some villains who represent current issues, just for the vicarious thrill of watching Frank blow up a boat full of Enron guys.
Is insulting deathblow a reference to the Punisher rip-off Jim Lee made in the 90s?
It's the earlobes, but if he grows shaggier hair it may look fine.
>Hurr Punisher doesn't have the depth to carry a show!
So? I don't care I just want Punisher action, would be nice to have it try and add depth but honestly I'm just happy at the prospect of a MCU project that wouldn't have any pretense to it, it's just a fucking insane dude shooting people in the fucking face. Any one else hoping for based Battle Van and Micro?
>>Bernthal has received high praise from producers, writers, fellow actors, and executives alike
Well no fucking shit. What you think they're gonna go "Nah, he's shit, you should stopping watching our show"
I think they should use Arrow Island like flashbacks throughout the season, I wouldn't dedicate a whole episode to Born...also for the love of god I would hope if they tried doing Born at all to remember this Frank's age...so do like Gulf War or some shit.
>And how they all react to and deal with the most prolific serial killer of all time
Is Frank the most successful serial killer in the Marvel Universe?
I mean you never hear anyone call him it outright, but he does have a bodycount in the thousands
This would be ideal, have a small roster of characters who deal with Frank's bullshit, think something along the lines of True Detective.
I'm curious as to whether or not they're going to have Frank monologue, because watching an angsty mass murderer not talking to anybody may get boring
Silly anon. That's exactly why he's got staying power. The crime that frank deals with didn't go away, and isn't going away, and it's shit people deal with more directly in their lives.
Other comics don't handle it, because it's a bad fit for the power level, tone ect.
And because in America, lots of criminal cases are solved by shooting the fuck out of the criminal.
Why people say shit like this when most of his guest appearances are one noted & so off character.
And Banshee. You know what...get either the showrunners from that or strikeback to do this.
Welcome Back, Frank works best if he's been "missing" on the crime scene for a while.
Maybe have half a season be Frank in prison (maybe do an adaptation of The Cell?) and the other half be WBF once he escapes.
I checked out that book recently, it was okay, overall mean and nasty.Collins explains the punchline in the afterword, I got what he was getting at, but rooting for a contract killer wasn't hard, although the reasons why one would hire one was different from both a gender and motive perspective.
I'm not sure how close it's going to be to the books, but all I know is the Banshee guys working on nasty pulp like that has me goddamn excited.
Hopefully Antony Star gets a real film career after Basnhee ends. He really feels like a guy who could break out of television and into major film roles, the guy has real charisma.
Production hell I think. With Strike Back done and Banshee over this year they're really going to have to start pumping out new original programming.
>tfw we never got a second season of Hunted
>Any one else hoping for based Battle Van and Micro?
Would be cool if they got Wayne Knight, I liked him in War Zone.
>We hear there is movement there, however, and that Netflix is looking for a showrunner who can tackle the project).
Get the strike back showrunners.
Would it be too much to hope that the Punisher series not take place in NYC? I mean, I know Marvel made a big deal that all their shows will be filmed in that city, but the Punisher is a character who never settles down in one spot. He goes to country to country, city to city to break up the biggest crime dens. To have him based in NYC, along with the four other Netflix heroes, makes it seem like overkill. DD took down Kingpin, Jessica killed Purple Man, I'm sure Cage and Fist will kill their respective villains, adding Frank on top of that, and they'll run out of villains to put in these series!
What I'd love to see in the series-
>First episode- origin of the Punisher, show him coming back from /a war/ to his family, cut in shots of him raising his family with an expanding crime scene. Have the shooting go down, show Frank struggling to cope, have him violently stop a shakedown at a store, beginning of the Punisher
>Following episodes- start establishing the world. Frank meets Micro, a crooked detective starts the Frank Files, see Frank get into his groove dealing with criminals
>Mid season arc- the Slavers
>Season finale- the Cell
>Final scene- show a crime boss flipping through a list of contacts, gets on the phone with them. Camera pans down to the name in the contact list showing only:
I think it would be better from the other side. Some hot shot mob boss goes into a slow-mo internal monologue about the fancy martial arts he's about to pull, then he just gets brutally franked. The last bit of the scene would be him lying there, broken and bloody, looking up at Frank in shock
Micro needs to work as one thing and one thing only - info. He hacks databases, pulls up classified info, so on, and his overall use should be limited. Frank should get his equipment from somewhere else, or some other contact or something. Or he should just have it already since he knows where local military stores the pewpew.
>His parents are both from Ashkenazi Jewish families (Jon's maternal grandfather was born in Munich, Germany, and Jon's other ancestors immigrated from Austria, Russia, Poland, and Lithuania).
Yeah but that's no different in the comics cap, widow, and wolverine have all killed yet they condemn Frank (minus Logan). I think it will work if they make the distinguish that other heroes have killed when there are no other options but Frank kills cause to him there are never any other option
>what are secondary characters, plot lines, and sub plots
Would you watch Daredevil if it was just him fuckin' around as DD? No. He has Foggy, Karen, Kingpin, etc etc etc. Supporting cast, anon.
A morally unbalanced black and white vigilante as the main character with other personalities to bounce off of would make a great show. Why do you think Punisher comics are so fun to read? Not just the action, but also for his inner monologue and his obviously fucking dilapitating PTSD. Soap, Gnucci, his supporting cast all add character and color.
Fuck all, man. Any show completely centered around 1 character is gonna blow.
I don't agree with this exact rendition (slow motion sherlock breakdown) but I do belive a internal monologue/frank narration is a must have for the punisher. it would work best with a punisher centered series however
>Flashbacks in every episode showing Frank slowly turning in to the Punisher Fallujah, Ramandi, like that Frank hears a voice telling him to give in and frank will be rewarded.
>supporting cast Micro, The apartment crew from WBF, Martin soap, Richthofen with Agent O'Brien show up from time to time.
> villians: the Maggia, Jigsaw, Nicky Cavalla being set up as the big bad next season
>Season one ends with Frank killing Slivermane and turning Jigsaw over to the police turns out the Maggia was working with the government for some reason or an another and now someone in Washington wants Frank dead so he calls in the Howling Commandos
>The voice should be ambiguous is it Death? Ares? Hela? Franks own twisted thoughts....YES!
> each flashback is self contained except for the last couple of episodes that is about Frank working with Nick Fury and the Howling commandos to rescue a HVT from a Terror cell....guess who.
> action should be intense, but realistic less Rambo more ZDT.
>Franks look is based on the Edmundson run modern operator with the tee and Trench look being used for Recon/down time. Joke about Matt trying to get him a super hero suit?
Gonna run outta Capos and wiseguys and gangbangers and corrupt cops and pedos, all of which you never see in any movie or AoS, just on the street level affairs with DD, JJ, LC etc
this game even has Matt Murdock in it. So yeah i'd say this would be neat if they kept in New York and the Prison level. Ryker island would be too movie-ish if they left setting.
He was already mentioned in an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so we at least know he's out there.
Have him show up periodically, then maybe kill him off at some point in season two.
