Just finished watching this one. It's cheesy as HELL but damn, I really enjoyed it. Also, not sure if it counts here but oh well, a thread anyways.
Any other thoughts on this movie?
Sandy wasn't in the movie, and Pig was pure comedic relief aside from his cool transformations. Otherwise he was a fat slob meant for laughs, but what can ya do. He's Pig.
Sandy will be appearing in the sequel though from what I've heard. This movie is before Journey to the West.
>dbz knock off
>still doesn't know Goku is based of Sun Wukong, the monkey in this film and from old legend.
no love for Pig
There an online source where I can get it? I keep telling myself I should watch this, seeing as how it's the one film Chinese filmmakers were hoping would beat out Kung Fu Panda.
I just never get around to getting a physical copy...
You mean like how Greek Mythology has been milked dry?
As far as I know there's no physical copy to buy yet. I'd just suggest you get it from kickass torrents.
You can torrent it, if you can stand really bad subs
They've really toned down his mischief in the movie, I'd go as far to say they made him the "strong silent" type. But he's suppose to be the protagonist so maybe that's why he's not so much a chaotic good.
this will never happen its one of Chinas most beloved stories due in no small part of its flexibility
you can change the setting, you can reinterpret characters, you can tell it from a ton of preservatives or before or after the story and it holds firm.
like that one 60s/70s show thats always running somewhere in china
wikipediais to be trusted, this movie is the highest grossing animated movie in china, beating #2 by about 3 times as much. Do the Chinese have a tendency to take successful things and run them horribly into the ground until it's a hideous mockery of what it used to be?
I wish I knew how to make webms, I'd like to capture the moment when da sheng turns the boulder into lava with his transformation.
Poju's adaptations was better.
It's fun if you turn your brain off, ignore the first 5 minutes that illustrate what the movie could have been, and ignore the 1d characters. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but the ginger Amazon who serves no purpose other than to be in the "girl power joke" just annoyed me.
I've been on a Journey to the West kick lately so I actually also watched this like two days ago. It's pretty fun, with some good action and the animation is decent but not as polished as the larger american productions. Also, the kid characters wasn't annoying.
I know this is a shot in the dark but a while ago i saw a Chinese trailer for a monkey king movie but it was 2d animated and out had something to do with demon slaying. Did i dream this up or does anyone know what I'm taking about?
I know what you are talking about. You mean this one, right? God Hunter.
I've been meaning to read the original but 4 books is a lot of material to get into. I wish there was an audio book version of it. I am assuming that we are talking about the Anthony C. Yu version?
It's at times beautiful, but it's obviously made by people who should be/would rather be making games than movies. The story is tired, the dialogue is archaic, and the cinematography is flashy garbage with overlong and poorly paced fight scenes. Its best visual moments are lifted from PS2 era video game cut-scenes. Everything is blue and orange, effects and reliance on game-level rendering can look cheap during key moments. It's basically "everything wrong with modern concept art, the movie." It's tasteless.
That said, where it shines is choreography. It's also a big step up from previous domestic 3D films. But until China loosens up its creative restrictions and let real movie makers tell real stories instead of banning them, that advance isn't going to translate into anything with any appeal outside of their own country.
This isn't a Chinese film. It's a film with a "made in China" sticker on its back.
As someone who really enjoyed this movie, everything said here is basically spot on.
