Season 1 is pretty rough no doubt about it. 2 and 3 have jumped up in quality by a decent amount. It's a guilty pleasure show, if you're not able to get through season 1, it probably won't grow on you by season 2.

The seasons are constructed a bit oddly. Very little happens in the first volume other than introductions and the second volume isn't that much better in that regard. So yes, team RWBY are the main characters but the others are gives a lot of screentime too.
The quality jumps each volume, the third one has been decent so far. It's not like the series is that long either, even if you end up not liking it you haven't lost much of your time.

Here's my advice for volume 1, all you really need are episodes 1, 8, 15 and 16. They're the only ones that matter, and everything else is pretty mediocre. after volume 1 you're own your own.

This comment reminds me of something. There is not one case of a canon relationship between a faunus and human in the show. I would go so far as to say that we have not even seen evidence of an ATTRACTION from a human to a faunus -- or vice versa. This about it this way: Blake passes for a human, yet the only male characters interested in her are a couple of faunus dudes. The creepy teacher, Professor Pork, flirts with only the human girls. Jaune tries to pick up most females in the show except Blake and Velvet (and of course Pyrrah).

If you have more specific criticism of my fics I'd actually welcome it. The main thing is that most people reading them generally just want to get off, and taking the time for a whole lot of characterization can be a negative with that audience in mind. Instead I try to weave the characterization into the lewd without interrupting the flow, which can be tricky.

I remember some nights ago when someone posted a story about a character that wasn't Anon so it could have some semblance of character and the combat banter was just bad. I remember thinking that unless he was on some very good downers and was also a retard he wouldn't be talking like that.

It reminds of the SAO situation where the dialogue is too eloquent in context but not nearly eloquent if that is their personality.

And I don't think Yang has ever been written well. She is either made into a dumbass or a simpering maid.
