Just stopping by to post Amy before I go to bed

Just caught up with the show - for me, it's the slowness. Huge reveals occur and then are ignored so we can have our slow, introspective pace. There doesn't seem to be a real driving force behind the events - and I suspect it's partially to do with the 15-minute episode slots. Like, we're under attack from aliens, but let's still take the time to talk about relationships and sing about our feelings - and because we have 10 minutes to do it in, let's speed on past our "issues of the day" and then focus on an entirely separate issue next time. It's too episodic to sustain it's own mythology.

I only just started up Gravity Falls, but what episodes I've seen have the overarching theme of "exploring local mysteries." There's always something at stake, driving the events forward, that can be traced back to the book Dipper finds in the first episode. Steven's struggles come from his very existence - the driven action can all be traced back to his birth, an event that he obviously has no conception of and no control over. His quest is about living his life, and the SU crew didn't want to make a big deal about it, which is pretty admirable. There's no big Naruto-esque reveal where the main character realizes just how special he is (ie. you've got a fox demon sealed inside you, everything you know has changed), it seems to be something he's dealt with over time and in his own, introspective way. They're treating it like a slice-of-life series, because that's how Steven tackles his overarching challenge - living the life his mother gave.

There's a charm to that, but when the premise also invokes alien rock creatures destroying the earth, "slice-of-life" feels unfulfilling, like we're missing out on the larger, more important story so we can follow around some faggoty kid. We don't get to see Pearl be a devoted, badass knight, we just see her cry about it 4000 years after the fact.

I admire what SU does, but it's too slow for me to get excited over.
