Why do Marvel likes so much to pose as #PROGRESSIVE but is such a mess with its LGBT-related content?
DC has so much stories with them (Batwoman, Midnighter, Constantine, Harley Quinn...), while Marvel relegates their small number of LGBT characters to cameos or obscurity.
Pic related. Original drawing from Planet Hulk where Steve and Bucky hold hands (they were hinted as a couple) was censured to a 'no homo' version. And let's not forget about Hercules being a ex-bisexual.
Marvel doesn't actually care about being progressive, they just realise that's the best way to make shit sell so they exploit the fuck out of it in their marketing.
DC, on the other hand, are genuinely a bunch of SJWs but don't exploit that in their marketing.
If this was DC you'd have a thousand fags saying "This is why Marvel is winning, DC!!"
DC has a really shitty marketing team so most people don't know who Midnighter or Constantine are. Sexuality and gender are an afterthought in DC's stories and marketing.
It was but it still happened. Marvel also had a gay Hercules and a gay Wolverine marry each other and become rulers of Canada.
DC does have Batwoman and Midnighter which are both very gay and very good. Quality-wise I would even agree that DC's gay content is better, but it is not nearly the same in quantity or in how visible it is in the general canon.
As of Secret Wars, that honestly seems unlikely to continue.
Huh, I didn't know that either. I thought >>78797290 was talking about Heinberg.
I wonder why he didn't protest when in 2013 the "not muh YA" crowd on tumblr accused him of being a straight white cis oppressive shitlord.
That's the way it should be when you think about it.
When you constantly advertise that your character is gay, it feels artificial and manufactured.
If it's just shown as being a part of their life, and has little or no bearing on their personality, it feels much more organic. And really, it's true to life. I've met more than a few guys who I didn't know were gay until they told me.
But of course, doing things the classy way isn't a good way to attract readers. Marvel may be lacking in dignity, but they aren't lacking in sales.
Even with Alonso saying Herc is full straight, the new book is such barabait. Feels like it's pandering to the gay readers anyway.
Really, Alonso should've just kept his mouth shut. That was a bad PR move on their part.
But they didn't let her get married so booooo
Sorry but my otp isn't together so that doesn't count
>Why do Marvel likes so much to pose as #PROGRESSIVE but is such a mess with its LGBT-related content?
Same Reason they Push MUHH DEVERSITY
But War Machine, Misty Knight, and so many other actual minority characters have to take a back seat for flavor of the month legacy characters
>Apollo is dragged through the mud to make Midnighter relevant
That's always been Apollo. Midnighter's always been the popular one, the one that people like; Polly is just "Midnighter's husband".
I don't think we should conflate the marketing people and the writers/artists' intents. Of course marketing is going to be all about what they think will get them sales. It makes sense even if you find it distasteful. But some of the most cynically marketed comics have actually ended up being well done by the creative team.
That was one of the most hilarious things I've read in a while.
Greatest comic ruse of 2015.
I think Namor was reacting to Northstar who was running from being brought into the fuckolgy circle. Namor hated Herc but respected him as a fighter, his eulogy was thanking him for distracting him from bad war times by wrestling him in the middle of the night...maybe you're right.
Well, maybe Midnighter was the one getting fucked. Could've made things easier for Prometheus.
