Probably when Aang gets hit by Azula's lightning and Katara subsequently whisks him away. Nothing I'd watched before had done what that moment did to me. You get hype when Aang goes into the Avatar state, then the screen just spazzes out and the music distorts and you can barely process what just happened even though it's clear as day. Everything from the direction to the music was absolutely perfect in that scene. And generally I'm a sucker for moments when the heroes get their shit kicked in so hard, just limping away with their lives is a harrowing. It makes their eventual triumph more satisfying.

the episode humanizes the characters on the "evil" side while the whole purpose of going to the island was to escape and relax.

My favorite moment of the series is when Katara self discovered that marrying an Avatar is as she's going to get in life, and that despite the fact that she never loved him will end up staying with him because he's a provider. The ending of the first book, starting with The Waterbending Master, is probably my favorite chunk of the series. It was so cinematic and the setting made it seem magical. There were so many good moments: The ash falling from the sky, Katara's hopes of learning waterbending being shattered and the subsequent showdown with Pakku, Aang confronting Koh, Zuko talking about Azula, Zhao killing the moon, Yue sacrificing herself, Aang being a badass in the Avatar state...

I'm also a total sucker for princess/commoner romances, particular those with sad endings, so that's another draw for me.
