Yeah, it's fairly common. Teachers get pretty mad about it if you do it in class, though.
>>
I don't even know why someone would even consider that position to be comfortable. I imagine it's not good for your back.
>>
>>78677482
Everyone has their cat moments, where something that really should be painful is fairly comfortable.
>>
>>78677234
Not quite that extreme but I do sort of sit like that.

>>78677412
More like that actually, just with only my right leg on my desk though.
It's a bad habit I picked up when really badly sprained my ankle, and had to have it elevated constantly.
Combine that with the fact that my desk is too short and shallow to comfortably have my legs beneath it, at the height they should be, and it's become my fairly standard sitting position.

I think people are missing this part. Everybody puts their feet up on footstools (and perhaps coffee tables and desks if they're uncouth) that wouldn't have been anything much for Europeans to comment on. But to take it to that kind of extreme just seems genuinely bizarre.

For some reason a lot of Japan's really unflattering portrayals of Americans involve us having a an irrational contempt for the Japanese specifically, like it comes up in everyday casual conversation for us.

It's so far removed from reality it's always kind of jarring to me.

Guns are more common than you think. You just need a license, which entails taking an afternoon seminar and signing a slip of paper that says "I definitely won't shoot anyone, I totally promise".

It's just considered impolite to shoot people. If you're going to commit murder in Canada, proper etiquette is stabbing, strangling, or feeding the victim to pigs. There's not sport in just shooting people.

I'm still, as an adult, having trouble understanding why Americans don't take their shoes off when they enter someone's house.

When I was a kid, I visited the States with my family for a convention, and we wound up visiting this family-friend's house. We walk in, I bend down, start unlacing my runners, and everyone just fucking stares at me like I whipped my dick out.

What possible reason would there ever be to NOT take your shoes off at the door?
>>
>>78682559
it's probably because of grill/barbecue culture
>>
>>78682559
because adhering to decorum like that isn't important
my family keeps their shoes off most of the time, but if we're having a party, we don't expect the guests to just pile up their shoes in the coatroom. that'd be retarded. you vacuum the house as part of the post-party cleanup anyway
>>
>>78682252
It's a remnant of the past. You couldn't mention the Japanese in the US during the 40s and 50s without being met with a hiss.
>>
>>78682610
Then you buy a goddamn shoe rack. They're like $10 at Wal-Mart.

It's just filthy and fucking rude, tracking all kinds of dirt and shit into people's homes.
>>
>>78682664
that's what doormats are for

having people standing around at a party in socks just looks silly
>>
>>78678567
>>78678567

Precisely!
>>
>>78682624
Well, yeah. That's what we do. We go overboard hating our enemy of the moment. The minute any kind of conflict is over, we stop giving a shit and consider everyone our friends again. Happened to the Koreans (South, at least), happened to the Vietnamese, happened to the Russians, and it will happen to the Muslims once they stop blowing themselves up.
>>
>>78682664
I don't think you understand.
It's not rude. We, as the hosts, expect that people will wear their shoes inside and don't mind it. And, again, we clean up the floor afterward.
>>
>>78682559
Most people do though, at least in the midwest.
It's considered impolite to track dirt Ito people's houses.
>>
>>78682559
Feet stink, and taking off your shoes is incredibly casual. Do that in your own home or if you're staying the night. Keep your fucking feet locked up otherwise. Worse case scenario, dirt and mud can easily be cleaned and nobody has to smell it in the meantime.
>>
>>78682559
foot odor

I'd rather have a shoe print on my floor, than foot odor in my air.
Also you're going in and out and in and out in most social gatherings. Why keep putting them on and off.

Your guest shouldn't have to adhere to any rules. Forcing them to do anything is just being a bad host and really very impolite. You should only have to take your shies off if your shoes are caked in mud/water. Otherwise, any miniscule amount of dirt or dust is the host's problem to clean up. It's all about courtesy towards your guest.

Try again. The types of men they're against are the sub-betas they actually stand a chance of winning any battles against. Why do you think it's traditional 'geek' pastimes like comics and vidya they expend all their effort attacking? This whole internet feminism thing is basically just a way for girls to extend high school bullying into adult life.

What are you even saying that CBG has upwards of 350+ aircraft, possibly more, and cost more than most of the world's militaries. It is on its own deadlier than 100% of the rest of the world's navies. Each of those Missile Cruisers carries upwards of 80 VLS cells (possibly more) and is supported by the most comprehensive logistics network any military has ever seen. That Carrier Battle Group is the deadliest thing ever put in the water.

I guess that comes down liking the cold.

Going outside in the summer is miserable for me. Light t-shirt and shorts, but it's still too fucking hot. I can't just walk around nude, and even then it would be too hot. Winter, on the other hand, is the best time to go outside. Grab a jacket and maybe some gloves. Good to go. If it's really nuts, like in the negatives with a wind-chill, just wear an extra shirt and extra socks. You can always put on more clothes, but there's only so many you can take off.

Japan annexed Korea and made them their bitch. Korea is super bitter about this.

> Thus, when Japan sent troops to Korea and annexed it in 1910, Japanese military leaders celebrated the annexation as the restoration of the legitimate arrangement of antiquity. For the next 35 years, Japanese occupation forces tried to eradicate Korean culture and to replace the Korean language with Japanese in schools. The effort was a consequence of a centuries-old attitude of disdain. Nose tombs in Japan still contain 20,000 noses severed from Koreans and brought home as trophies of a sixteenth-century Japanese invasion. Not surprisingly, many Koreans loathe the Japanese, and their loathing is returned with contempt.

Basically, Bandai wanted a goofy show with national stereotypes fighting each other after Victory Gundam, which is dark as fuck, failed.

Most of the staff quit after seeing the designs, but Imagawa the director said, "This could be fun." He then asked if he had money to travel around and do research and Bandai said no because they are Jews. Imagawa then patterned everything off movies he had seen. The part in Russia is based off Alcatraz from the Rock.

Basically, Japanese Culture took A LOT of cues from Korean Culture. But then, during World War II, Imperial Japan invaded, killed and raped everybody, possibly in that precise order, and did a bunch of shit to try and wipe out Korean culture.

Then we dropped the bomb on them, took over and Korea never got their revenge for all the raping, killing and forcing kids to learn Japanes. Which I can only assume would've been, raping, killing and forcing the kids to learn Korean, because there is something in the water in Southeast Asia.

It may have a bit to do with the American occupation of Japan after WW2, as that led to a long period where the only Americans the Japanese would interact with were soldiers, many who likely didn't want to be posted in such a different country, so that kind of culture gap leads to resentment on both ends, and since one side is made up of tough, agressive soldiers, they likely had issues with American troops throwing their weight around.

Tack that onto the post WW2 programs the Americans ran, which were for the benefit of the Japanese people, but were so Western in their conception it felt like an assault on their culture. Imagine a life where you only eat rice as a staple food, and then suddenly a foreign government says you have to feed your kids some European stuff called "bread", because post-war rationing makes rice scarce.

Americans get depicted as arrogant towards Japanese, because of past circumstances. Same way the Chinese view the Japanese as either mustache twirling villains, or savage thugs. Or why the French and English loathe each other. Or why Middle Easterners distrust Westerners. Or why Hutus kill Tutsis.

Of course it's common courtesy to remove obviously dirty shoes, but it's honestly nothing to get ass-pained about if you actually take care of your home and vacuum at least once a week.

And it's only up-tight females who get super pissy about shoes on carpets, and that's usually because their neurotic moms beat it into them.

Courtesy is not a one-way street. A guest should respect their host's home, just as much as a host should be welcoming towards their guest.

But then, I live in Canada, where we don't track dirt into each others' homes like filthy American savages.

A lot of the older Japanese are still bitter about the US using Okinawa as a giant aircraft carrier to this day.

But on the other hand, Japanese politicians visited the tombs of what are essential war criminals and only recently settled the comfort women issue.

not really

it's fucked up how many people in japan deny the war crimes of WW1 and WW2

i live in Texas, and all throughout my life i've been taught that what we did to native americans and blacks was wrong. In Germany, they they've made it their life mission to teach about the holocaust and to never be aggressors ever again

so japan really doesnt have a fucking excuse

you know why 90% of bruce lee movies have japanese main villains? it's because china fucking hates japan for not apologizing
>>
>>78695884
Yeah it's pretty much the opposite of what happened in Germany. The German people had the consequences of the Holocaust shoved down their throats forcibly by the allies, many military officers and civilians were forced to tour the camps while someone broadcast constantly over the loudspeaker about what happened within them. It was made clear that the Holocaust wasn't just the Nazis fault and that all of Germany shared responsible for it, which is the attitude Germany holds to this day. Meanwhile in Japan the US either wasn't fully aware of or didn't care as much about their war crimes so the Japanese were free to bury, forget, deny, or justify their deeds however they wanted.

people in Texas recently published a textbook that referred to slaves as migrant workers.

Not really dissing Texas or the US because I think American History is taught pretty well, but just saying it's a slippery slope and there are in fact groups of Americans in politics today who would be more than happy to overlook or misrepresent the history of native americans and black people in America.
>>
>>78696257
To be fair China and Japan's hatred of each other goes a long way back, as do Korea's and Japan. WW2 is just the most recent time they tried to kill each other. But yeah Japan doesn't really feel bad for anything it did during the war, which is pretty fucked up, hell even America admits it made interment camps and imprisoned people there without reason or trial.

It's weird, most modern nations older than a century or two freely admit that they've done fucked up things in the past and feel bad about them, but Japan doesn't really seem to feel guilt about anything it's done. As far as many Japanese are concerned Japan hasn't really done anything bad aside from being on the wrong side of a war.

That has a lot to do with who got to Germany first: the Russians. The Soviets loathed the fascists, and the fascists hated the guts out of the Soviets. When Russia finally steamrolled their way into Germany, they did their damndest to reinforce how bad Naxis were (while also raping as many German women as they could; as quoted from Ich War Neunzehn by a German woman to a Soviet officer, "Better to sleep with one than with many"). There many Soviet trials that were showboated and exaggerated to reinforce how bad a fascist government was.

When Americans got to Japan, and we discovered all the crazy shenanigans they were up to, we asked for their "research" data and told them to go home.
>>
>>78696824
Eh I think it had more to do with the fact that most of the Japanese's war crimes took place in Asia so the US didn't really encounter them in the Pacific. With the Nazis the invading armies liberated the camps themselves and saw firsthand what had happened in them. But the Japanese's crimes were never really seen first hand by the Americans and most were just glad the war was over and they didn't have to invade Japan proper, so they were willing to let the Japanese sweep them under the rug so they could end things quickly.

Japan has the same birth/death ratio as most Western countries, they're just not importing millions of brown people to make up for it.

Seeing the impact it's had on my country, and the fact that a decline in population would probably be good for Japan especially with the cusp of roboticisation about to wipe out most jobs, they're the smart ones and we're probably going to have a civil war in 50 years. We won't be fighting them because we've had the ability to resist bashed out of us since the 1960s. It'll be all the different brown people who hate each other fighting.

I'm not so sure about that anymore. We sort of define ourselves as "The Good Guys", which is a well-meaning intention but also means that we have to have a "Bad Guy" to have on the other side of the table. Since WW2, after which we decided our job was to be world police, there was no time so weird for us was during the 90s when we just... didn't have a bad guy. Without evil to oppose, who the fuck were we anymore?

In our previous wars, there was always an undercurrent of respect when it came to our enemies. We fought the Nazis, but no one was going to say that they were not worthy opponents. The Japanese were going to lose the war, but you had to respect the fact that they made us fight for every goddamn inch of land. Communism had to be stopped, but the USA and USSR were titans brawling on mountaintops for the fate of the world. We were impressive because our enemies were just as impressive.

And then it all sort of... sputtered out. The cold war ended, no new big bad rose up to replace it in our mythos, and we just sort of puttered along until we got whipped up into a fear frenzy where we spam missiles to blow up guys in pickup trucks because they might sneak one guy with an AK into the middle of a city.

All of our big fights in the last century were about coming to the aid of others or opposing some international bully, even if we had to be poked a couple of times to get up off our ass. This fight is more reactionary and fearful. I don't think we are going to walk away with a new friend from this one.

Stoves are generally more efficient, especially with pellet fuels (high surface area, consistent fuel quality), but they don't look as good in operation and they can take a long time to make a room feel warm (though they'll also keep it warm for longer).

>>78720461
Insulation doesn't heat your home, most people who still have a stove or fireplace have one from necessity because they live further out than the gas lines. Electric, oil burning and propane burning systems are available, but each of them requires your home to be fitted out at fair expense with the necessary equipment, and they require constant maintenance (in fairness, a stove done properly requires an insulated, lined flue in the chimney, and stoves and chimneys in regular use should be swept annually).

Most people who think they have a well-insulated home have little more than double glazing, cavity insulation and loft insulation. In reality, you should have both heavy-duty roof-line and loft insulation (the latter replaced at 10 year intervals, max), wall insulation (checked and replaced every time you've had mice or other rodents confirmed in the building), floor insulation (to at least the standard of your walls and loft, and if you have concrete floors - laid underneath them), insulated doors and windows (wood is surprisingly bad at retaining the heat of your home) and so on.

There are still huge variables in heat loss and efficiency even in similarly-insulated homes - a building with concrete construction (most modern apartment blocks, for example) will lose heat quickly because concrete is a terrible insulator (worse than wood); a building with concrete roof tiles loses heat marginally faster than one with slate or wooden shingle, but slower than one with *most* grades of tar-paper. These marginally colder homes also use more electricity for lighting if they use energy-efficient non-halogen non-led bulbs, because those fluorescent bulbs need to heat up to best operating temperature.

I think the guy meant comparatively well insulated, shit was drafty as fuck in the day becasue it needed to be optimized for summers too and skimping on materials was common practice, though the old growth they used was better quality and plaster or wood was the only option. regarding loft insulation I think it only needs replacing that regularly if pests or moisture is an issue, last energy audit my parent's did the insulation was doing the job fine after about 20 years. Though it might be becasue my dad re shingles and papers every 5 years becasue he's a retired roofer who gets bored easily.

considering how much eye glue sells over there and how most of their haircuts hide the face.

Most people who aren't hardnose conservatives don't care about that stuff on both sides. As long as K and J pop flows freely younger generations don't give a shit. Now those chinks on the other hand, fuck 'em.

It's the USS Constitution, and it's still an active vessel that you can be posted to. It's a prestige/honor thing to be given a deployment on it.

Bleh. I recall having the same room for all classes up until 2nd or 3rd grade, then we started doing the migrating thing, which I enjoyed so much more. Moving around and having a change of atmosphere was so much more tolerable.

It always made more sense to me anyway, because not every classroom had to be multi-functional. Each room was designed to focus on the subject that was taught there.

A lot of japanese schools require it, yeah. Something something about building a sense of duty towards others and good civic-minded thought.

Oddly enough the US has much more strict public urination laws regarding this and he could easily be put away as a sex offender.

>wanting to spend more time in school
It's probably because I'm American, but this viewpoint never made sense to me. I had a pretty good social life and did plenty of shit after school with and without friends. I didn't need it to be organized at school unless they had a facility that made it possible, like a gym or a computer lab. The idea that school is your community and you need to participate in clubs to be social just seems a little weird.

Other countries like to make fun of America for being right.

Thats because japanese culture is collectivist and American culture is more independent. In Japan, everyone is supposed to bee part of the group. The group matters, not you. School clubs are a way to train kids into willingly joining in as part of the group by starting them off on smaller groups that interest them, so they can learn to identify as being part of the 'Literary Club' before they have to identify as being part of 'The Company'.

In America, you do clubs because that shit sounds like fun and it keeps kids off the streets in the afternoon so they are less likely to cause trouble. Or because your parents make you because dad wants to relive his sports fantasy through you. Whatever, dad.
But by and large if you don't want to do clubs no one is going to make you.

It will be the third Jump Street movie.

"The yakuza is peddling a new drug in Japan, we need you to infiltrate as ordinary high school students, operating on exchange. Don't worry, most of them have never seen a white person before so they wont realize how goddamn old you look."

I think you'll find that the US is actually far more gay than Sweden. Seems to be an Anglo thing.

What's so special about it? It's basically marathon sessions where you try not to come, wrapped in spiritual/mystical stuff.

You have to understand that to this day most of japan is completely unwilling to recognize or possibly unaware of their countries actions during world war 2 and they think america bombed them for shits and giggles.

You jest, but one thing that really surprised me about America is that just about everyone is living in wooden houses. And not even the nice kind of wood.

Do you guys have some kind of building material shortage or something?

Considering the average American soldier seemingly has a foot and 150 pounds on the average NK soldier, it's not that far off.
