It usually gets fucked up somehow in translation.
I don't get it myself. I mean look at the guy on the right. There isn't a single anime, manga, video game, etc that has this style. It's similar, but there's something distinctively off about it.
I love it, it's the highest form of expression of the medium.
It generally looks fine in animation like Teen Titans and Ben 10 but they can't seem to emulate the style well at all on paper. All anime inspired comics look dogshit even from competent artists like Mark Crilley.
The French do an okay job at it though.
but /co/ your most beloved brown waifu is also drawn by OP pic's artist.
You know, the Disney derived intentionally ugly because beauty is oppressive/uninteresting red nosed shit and the shit from 90's BW xerox zine scene that permeate webcomics.
>I'm a weeb. I read mostly manga. So I only like animu influenced /co/mics like Ms. Marvel and Batgirl.
Please be bait.
>not loving Ecstasy AKA Darks
I do. She's way cuter in Miyazawa's issues.
What comics do you expect a guy that read manga all his life to read? Seriously. You may think I'm crazy but I think you guys are for loving that ugly faced, house style muscle men balloon breasted women shit. It's so busy on the eyes, I can't even read the comic properly.
What is a 'manga influence'? Is it just BESM designs (that's way older than manga) or is it the general language of manga?
I was just doing my yearly peek into manga to see if there's anything I like and I have to admit that the manga shorthand that almost everyone follows in Japan is *objectively* fucking awful.
The characters are incapable of expressing complex emotions, they're fucking SAD or ANGRY or EMBARRASSED at the most basic level and this fucking sucks.
Male characters have so little effort put into them it's even worse than capeshit.
They draw gigantic puppy eyes on everyone but they forget that the most expressive feature is the MOUTH, which is drawn like a stupid line, no lips, nothing. On top of that they draw those stupid grins and other expressions that have no foundation in human body language.
I could go on for hours, I don't even hate manga, but I can't relate to this shit. Whenever I see one of these things in a comic, Western or not, I drop it instantly.
The only good thing about manga are speed lines, and they're incredibly underused in Western comics for some reason.
Does Karl Kerschl count as anime influenced?
Cause I love me some Gotham Academy art.
>The only good thing about manga are speed lines, and they're incredibly underused in Western comics for some reason.
Because most artists nowadays want to draw movies for some reason. Thanks, Hitch.
> every fucking time I hear this shit
I've checked seinen alright, they're shonen with gore or "psychological" shit where everyone is about as relatable as a cactus.
You guys are in denial. The problem with manga is they're made by hikikomori who have never been outside and have no idea about human dynamics. They can't write a HUMAN character to save their lives, and they go by standards they see in videogames or whatever the fuck they think is cool.
I REALLY want to like manga but it seems to me like they're getting worse and worse with every generation.
I was commenting on the fact that the manga art style is a huge handicap when you need to draw complex emotions and someone had to tell me I was reading the wrong things as it always happens when someone criticizes manga.
Blacksad, 1000 Storm, Sandman, A Contract With God
> Yer prolly just an aspie
I might be an aspie but if someone makes pic related face in a comic I'll drop it. What the fuck is that? Who ever makes that face, ever? And they copy paste this and a dozen other shitty expressions everywhere because it's all these recluses have in their visual library as far as humans go.
It's over m8, you can't win.
There are already 2 generation of kids who grew up with this weeb garbage.
To them it's natural as Mickey Mouse, it's not something strange or foreign.
No go fuck yourself. If you really have a problem with exaggerated faces in animation then you're a certified retard who has no business doing anything other than watching paint dry.
That's a pretty extreme example there, senpai.
Accusing manga of using "shitty" symbols seems a subjective criticism since audience over the planet have no trouble understanding or enjoying it.
You can evoke complex emotions out of minimalist are like Peanuts, you seem to have fairly good taste in art, so it's just seems to an understandably personal preference rather then failings of the style.
To each his own.
My problem isn't really with manga using shitty symbols as much as said symbols becoming accepted as an alternative to proper expressions grounded in reality (it's hilarious that I'm getting called an aspie because I can't relate to this shit).
I'd take minimalist, understated characters that are at least grounded in how real humans act (that's most old school cartooning) over the shorthand used in manga.
Since you can't really separate the two things - because the shorthand and the art style in manga were built upon each other - I think having a manga influence nowadays is objectively awful because of all the shitty code that comes with it, that's pretty much what I was saying.
I find a lot western fans get triggered by anime because it lies in a limbo of sorts in between the simple cartoony stuff like Simpsons and the illustrative comic book art that is derived form classical Renaissance traditions.
You get cartoony heads with flat cutout expressions, but otherwise proportionally normal and sometimes very detailed art.
But you are freaking out a bit about it,
It's not 1998, bro.
Not really freaking out, just being a little annoyed about people refusing to acknowledge it's a problem.
I don't see the problems I mentioned with older manga, because the authors were not repressed shut-ins and they could draw relatable interactions between characters.
>repressed shut-ins and they could draw relatable interactions between characters.
This is retarded, yer retarded.
I mean, a lot of manga like most everything is crap, but you sound like you used to jack off to tentacle porn all day and now you're super guilty about it, Jesus.
manga has better illustrated fight scenes
He and some other japansese artists have done covers and Nihei has done and issue with Wolverine. I also believe some other stuff has been done by real weeb artists.
See My Life Me (or the like) of what I think is a bad anime influence. Or basically anime that looks like a wikihow stock photo.
It looks flat ,poor colors and dead. The writing is normally matched with the art style. Too many exaggerated emotions per second with little realism or relateability to the characters.
However a lot of modern cartoons have anime influence. Even very small things like pink hatching blush shade. Along with a few anime animation techniques. Like the dark screen and a white slash for an attack.
I normally find the art styles mingle together better when the artist themselves actually appreciates both anime and western cartoons.
Of course I like most cartoon styles and disney and whatever; however I prefer anime styles over the general comic book style. Most of the faces to me are filled with too many lines, bland, and barely memorable.
The minimalism in faces makes an exaggeration more memorable. I normally find with kids that watch disney or anime want to mimic the faces they just thought were funny or cute.(even older weebs will make the squinty happy face) I dont see this a lot with comic book styles.
I think The Rock Cocks mixes anime and western together well. I would say skullgirls is the best mash of westanime styles but they haven't made a comic.
Yeah, I remember saving some a few months back.
Here's another one by Murata. But the one I posted before is better in my opinion.
I had a Powergirl one too but I think I deleted it by
This one's pretty good too. Those fucking webs are crazy.
>posts a bad example of western art
>SEE, LOOK HOW MUCH BETTER TUMBLR IS HAHA YOU'RE WRONG BECAUSE SOME ARTISTS ARE LAZY
You're fucking retarded.
Is this the one you were talking about?
>anything more than shapeless noodle blobs
Someone post that image Harry Partridge made, where it shows cartoons by the 70s, 80s, 90s and 10s.
The 80s one demonstrated American animation basically invented "real" cartooning.
Yes. Manga in general does so many things better than comics, be it fights, or what have you. Too bad those never get translated but as long as it's not some weird in between like OP then it's good to have anime inspired art because it is generally more appealing than most western comic art styles.
While she's cute drawn by that guy, I much prefer Alphona's Kamala. Fluffy hair and ethnic nose that make her cuter.
That one's actually good, though.
You want bad Romita, I've got some bad Romita.
Oh fine. Basically Gurihiru tend to do a very much mangaesque stylization of western comic visuals. And I find it to be a wonderful, wonderful style. Wish there were more things in this kind of style.
>The 80s one demonstrated American animation basically invented "real" cartooning.
Please kill yourself immediately.
it'd be worse as porn
there's really only so many ways you can draw a woman in a ripped up suit tied up, it gets boring very quickly
the story is what sets empowered apart from just being cheesecake
Anime art is a cancer that consumes nearly all young artists today. Go to DeviantArt or Tumblr, or any blog about art or fan art, it's all there is. No noses wide eyes, pointy chins bullshit. No knowledge of anatomy, no desire to improve. Once you're in it you pretty much got it, how can you be better at redrawing the same shit?
It's fine to be used as a gateway drug, but one should always grow past it.
Or actually watch something besides the waifu bullshit that's so popular these days.
There are really good styles that those idiots won't even attempt, and God forbid they try to come up with their own.
>how can you be better at redrawing the same shit?
>implying any of the will turn pro
It's called cartoons, silly billy.
You know all the shit on this board that isn't capeshit?
Anyway, it's hardly worse then honing your skills for a decade and end up drawing Marvel/DC corporate fan-fiction featuring naked muscleman and girl #875409
Capeshit will never have the same mass appeal as anime, simply because Anime is easy. I myself got into DBZ for a long time, only doing anime stuff.
It really isn't. Popular among viewers, maybe, not among drawers. Anime has a big grip, maybe for being so dumbed down and simplified that kids start thinking their shit art is ok.
I know there's real Anime artists, I love Akira's art direction, but the basic shit, the weeb style you'll see in shonens and moes is so fucking damaging in the long term to anyone actually wanting to be a serious artist.
I immediatly teach younglings to drop it, no good can come from it. Want to be specifically an anime artist? Do like the good eastern artists, learn traditional art, anatomy, dynamism, then turn into anime.
So what you're saying is that you're an inclusive faggot who discourages young artists from developing their own style and want to create a new generation of rigid no fun faggots all producing art that looks the same.
Hey, nigger, don't try to act like you understand art.
Nothing in basic anime is their own, it copy pasted shit. Also you teach one to do the right thing first, copy things that are good, it's called FUNDAMENTALS, you huge cunt. Then they go for their own style.
People that doesn't learn that first end up being a mess of "stylized" garbage, like Liefeld never learned to draw before doodling roided heroes.
Just cause you're a weeaboo piece of shit and I'm an objective artist that don't like watching the youth go to waste it doesn't mean I'm unlikable, it means we are different.
Honestly I would rather choke on my own vomit myself rather than hear you talk about your animus or look your DeviantArt page filled with moe or anime Sonics.
I'd share you view if there was a legit commercial outlet for well drawn figurative comic art other then capeshit.
Drawing spidrman spread eagle over buildings is just as laughable as moeshit.
>Anime art is cancer
>but western flash/tumblr tier art is A-okay
also stop generalizing.
Don't dodge the subject, there is only one venue for classic figurative art in comics, capeshit.
Everything else depends on stylization and personal branding.
It's far better to encourage personal unique style over regurgitation of 19th century academic formula.
I wish they gave Girihiru a better ongoing than fucking Gwenpool.
> "Manga can have good art, look!"
> Posts one of the 3 well drawn things that came from Japan in the last 50 years.
Animu fans have it easy, they get to choose between a whole dozen webms of feature movies they can compare to Western cartoons.
I didn't come here to talk about comics, my comment was as off topic as possible. I just wanted to make a statement about learning art in general and how much the basic anime style creates shitty, lazy "artists".
If western comics had nearly the same influence I'd be talking about that, not anime.
Moeshit isn't the only thing plaguing those sites. Stop complaining over one style. Tumblr artists are drawing everybody with bright red noses and "progressive" characters while slapping chromatic aberration effect to it. How is that any better?
Also, it's safe to assume those shitty "anime" artists are mostly kids doing it as a hobby. Let them have fun, they'll abandon it sooner or later. Getting them to abandon that style and telling them to grind the fundamentals at that age is killing their imagination.
The thing is it goes the other way around.
Aimless MUH MASTERS realism is just another addition to the boring pile that no one will care about.
Just learning anatomy and polish alone does not make you able to draw pic related. You gotta get original with your art later, not forsake stylization all together.
>Posts one of the 3
The fuck you on about.
You can pick an artist from fucking SHONEN and find good work from them. There's good and bad artists in both asian and western countries.
Deal with latin languages being far superior in every single aspect than your garbage germanic shit with retarded pronunciations that obey no law or logic, you huge fucking hillbilly faggot.
>Shonens and moes
But no? I'm referring to those too, as Poplar is one of your "moes".
>Posts one of the 3 well drawn things that came from Japan in the last 50 years.
Wow capefags are really delusional. Holy hell. Japan has rape porn comics that are drawn better than 99% of any western comic.
>can't even figure out how English works
If it's done by an actual Jap, then yeah, it's great. MvC2 has a better artstyle than most of the western depictions of the characters. Bengus is GOAT.
>Japan has rape porn comics that are drawn better than 99% of any western comic.
God, don't fucking remind me. It's actual DA-tier, with the balloon tits and disproportion anatomy.
>I'm too stupid to understand English
>No. It's the language that's stupid. That's the only explanation.
A lot of European comics tend much more towards the stylized than the excess of detail that a lot of cape artists seem to think is good art.
Never really got it, myself. But then, I am European myself, so I would biased by nostalgia towards the kind of thing I read myself, I suppose.
Seriously, stop. Despite its flaws, people possessing natural human intelligence have no trouble understanding English perfectly. Hell, even in its "messed" state, there are those who have deeply intricate knowledge of the subtle facets of the language. If you're too much of a dumbshit to figure it out, then at least have the dignity to own up to your lack of intelligence. Don't get pissy just because it requires some actual thought.
Does it seem like I have trouble figuring it out, motherfucker? I didn't even needed classes to learn this basic ass non-poetic and non-romantic language, this shit is child's play compared to any latin. Requires actual thought? Lol, please, nigger.
I'll give it that is a simple as fuck language.
However it still is retarded, it's troubles on the core and foundations well known, and if you are attempting to deny them then you're just another americun fucktard that can't understand objective criticism because MUH MURICA.
Best girl loses
Just like in my Japanese comics
Not that guy but you're full of shit anon
I know I messed the doesn't, and the other cunt pointed the past tense negative of need, which also makes no sense.
YA GOT ME
Take in consideration how many languages have you learned without tutoring, though.
Also, try to refute the points about english making no sense.
The number of actual experts on the language and their utter lack of trouble making sense of it is proof enough that English isn't the confusing pile nonsense you insist it is.
Your self-teaching is entirely beside the point and is not impressive; it's not making you look any smarter here. Hell, I'd even argue that your ability to learn English supports the argument that the language makes far more sense than you're giving it credit for.
Well slap my ass and call me Sally, this thread is filled to the brim with all types of cancer.
anon, please check out Wayward. It's made for you.
>The 80s one demonstrated American animation basically invented "real" cartooning.
>The 80s one demonstrated American animation basically invented "real" cartooning.
The 80's? You mean the time period where every American cartoon was either made to look like anime or directly animated by the same japs who made anime?
Here's my theory on Gurihiru. It's the perfect balance of half breed art.
It is inviting to all the weebs that love animu yet retains the toonish flare that /co/ already loves.
Does this pic look like animu? YES
Does this pic look like a cartoon? YES
Even reminds me of that Spectacular Spider-Man animated series.
Anon, if you're still here...
Is it pic related? Because she is the bestest of best girls.
Sometimes. Some artists do a good job of it, some completely botch it. I guess it depends on the weeb level of the actual artist.
And if they're really good, they'll find a good balance between the two. The expressions in E2:S can get pretty manga-ish sometimes.
Yes, when stuff gets popular it influences other stuff in different mediums. Japanese art has made an impact on non-anime wannabe art. The obvious wannabe shit like what you've posted there is not being factored in here, please understand.
>all those facial expression from most of the ducks
Can you guess who are marked by purple circles in pic related?
Empowered is honestly the best cape comic being sold today.
my problem with pseudo manga is that it's usually innocuous cute stuff
>Emp is not porn
No, Emp is a total softcore porn, you see everything but nipples, Dicks, and pussies. I can think of five diffrent panels throughout the story where you see Emp riding TB or giving him head without actually SEEING the act.
I fucking love Empowered, but let's be real here, it's a porn, a great well done porn.
Do cartoons count?
I like Monstress. Sana Takeda art is pretty cool.
This looks better than most capeshit artstyles, but is still not very good at all. The faces are the worst part; yet again, still better than normal western art.
Anime in general looks as shitty as western /co/ styles, but the best looking anime is leagues beyond the best western shit. Not that that's really fair; the best anime shouldn't even be called the same style as average anime.
Doesn't change the fact that there's a certain level of a distinct change going on here.
Here's a page from the Odd Thomas comic, which also took the "manga" route.
Again there's a distinct difference in style. Odd's face is elongated. Eyes are slightly off on everyone.
The loli comes close, but rarely.
Maybe it's just bad art from an underpaid immigrant, maybe Japanese culture makes that much of a difference, but the "offness" of American manga is undeniable.
The best looking anime is great, but so is the best western shit. It's okay to appreciate the hard work, effort, and ability in both media, you fucking weeaboo.
You're not any better. Take a look at >>78669711 and Patlabor 2 to name a couple of examples. There's some beautiful Japanese animation out there, regardless of the sea of mass-produced shit. Not much different from the west, considering that for every Beauty and the Beast there are about fifteen Phineas and Ferbs.
That looks more like Franime style.
>No knowledge of anatomy
I forgot that western cartoons have all complete realistic drawings.
>this whole fucking thread
I find it hilarious that /a/'s ATLAB threads always get deleted in a couple posts yet this has lasted days.
Also, I still can't understand how a board with a dedicated cape comic defense force can still act elitist about manga. Saying shit like "99% of anime and manga is shit, only muh Cowboy Bebop and Akira is good *-*" when I bet you hate 99% of modern comics.
This is what happens when you let in weebs who are afraid to stay in /a/. They don't read comics or watch cartoons but they're damn sure it's shit compared to any of their glorious anime.
>how much the basic anime style creates shitty, lazy "artists"
Conversely, the more advanced anime styles result in a quality of art that the west has yet to attain in motion and you're far better off being influenced by them if you want to be a serious animator who is actually capable of creating anything great.
No, it's not.
The best are on par. You're literally trying to be stupid if you outright refuse to accept that talent and ability has no regional limitation.
It's okay if it's done well. Freaks Squeele has tons of anime influence and it's great.
I only read good clean Christian manga.
Can you explain the image to me? I dont read iron fist or power man. I just know its two cute brown kids dressed like those marvel characters. Whos children are they and why isnt it canon?
Total bullshit. All he has to do is find a strong enough piece of metal and jam it into their neck. You know he's insanely strong right? Titans are basically tailor-made to be weak to Spider-Man's strengths. He would fuck up an army of them no sweat.
I have never seen Western manga-style character design that could pass for Japanese. There's always something that just isn't right.
>The problem with manga is they're made by hikikomori who have never been outside and have no idea about human dynamics. They can't write a HUMAN character to save their lives, and they go by standards they see in videogames or whatever the fuck they think is cool.
Manga is super mainstream in Japan, is made by all kinds of people, and predates both video games and anime. Manga, generally speaking, is not even trying to look realistic (as in, like real people).
It's pretty obvious you don't know shit about the topic and just want manga to be exactly like Western comics.
>But isn't anime inspired by cartoons and comics?
The first anime, Astro Boy (1963), was based on a manga by Osamu Tezuka. He was inspired by Disney, but he was also inspired by other things. People really exaggerate the Disney connection.
/a/ was probably the very first board that was ever made for the site. 4chan was specifically founded to discuss anime and manga and such.
American animation was important for the development of animation... in the early 20th century. It didn't take long for anime to leave it in the dust.
So you're saying all Japanese artists should "grow past" manga-style character design? Nice cultural imperialism you've got there.
If it's so easy then how come Westerners can never get it to look right? To say nothing of creating animation.
>the weeb style you'll see in shonens and moes
Weeb means wannabe Japanese. So you're saying anime/manga uses a "wannabe Japanese" art style? That is, they are trying to copy themselves and their own artform?
Anime has vastly better art than American animation. It's not even a contest.
I agree with this anon, an other French comics use a more chibi anime style and it's done great because on one side you have a disturbing dark humor and a cute colorfull artstyle on the other side.
No, it's pure shit and it's cringe inducing. Comics are one of the few truly american art forms. The art has been mastered through the hard work of it's earliest pioneers over the course of nearly a century. Why in the fuck would you embrace some current trend with that type of history and heritage at your fingertips? The same people who embrace this bullshit cultural-appropriation are the same people who are embracing all of the pc shit that is also ruining the industry. You're cancer.
He's right and you're a beta fucking faggot. I imagine it's hard to accept that you're into lame things. It's much easier to assume somebody else isn't thinking for themselves than it is to admit that you're a fucking turd.
Your opinions are as shitty as the things you're into. Nobody with decent taste agrees with you. I'm sure you'll find some who concur at your weeb fests, but they're as autistic as you are.
Jesus Christ. Not the person you're replying to but fuck me, recognize a years-old textbook example of trolling when it bites you in the nose, you fucking spittoon.
Difference between manga and comic fight scenes is that manga decompresses the fuck out of fights. It gives you a lot of space to enjoy individual moments, but comics breeze through them with bigger key moments. More information per panel, but less of a story being told through the fight. Less about the action, more about the feats. I always liked Hitch's action sequences in The Authority though. Really grand and chaotic, but without using sound or visual effects to emphasize impact. Different from manga action in that regard but it shares the same decompression, so you can enjoy the fight. Lots of still shots that force your imagination to fill in the blanks.
Also to answer OP's question, it's good when it's a natural influence on the artist's style, but it's terrible when it's obviously mandated shit cashing in on weeb tweens that ends up looking like a heartless how-to-draw-manga book. Milonogiannis is a good example of the former, his art oozes Yoji Shinkawa and Shiro Masamune, but he treads the line between looking obviously western or eastern. Early Frank Miller is a great look at non-modern manga-inspired comic art too, just read Ronin and Lone Wolf and Cub back to back. You can really tell the difference between an artist who studied their influences and an artist who's pasting bug eyes over a pair of big tits.
Understanding Comics goes into detail over the differences in conventions between the west and east, and McCloud's book Zot! demonstrates a manga influence that goes deeper than art style. Like most things it's all in the execution.
A While back Iron Fist and his girlfriend were about to have a baby, but capeshit being the stagnant shitfest that it is, couldn't have something like that so it was retconned into Iron Fist jizz being so full of his chi(his life force) that it created a false pregnancy and thus she was never pregnant(now she's apparently with Captain America: Bird Edition)
Fast forward to Secret Wars where there's an alternate universe where IF and Misty actually have a baby:the girl with the two pony tails(she's brown because Misty is black) and it's the cutest shit.
Not a single post about Dustin Weaver's Infinity Gauntlet?
It was one of the best examples os anime influenced art. It was a fucking good artist taking influence from Katsuhiro Otomo, not some retard weeb fanboy trying to emulate some awful shounen he likes.
And Weaver himself colored it, escaping from the awful "realistic" digital coloring that plagues the comics. Well, he at least colored part of it. Rain Beredo did a decent attempt in emulating Weaver colors.
Real artists shouldn't think like fanboys and publishers shouldn't hire fanboys, but artists like Weaver or real japanese artists, like the Capcom ones.
I don't want to see another awful joke like Marvel Mangaverse, X-Men Misfits or X-Men Phoenix.
I like manga and anime that are influenced by western styles. Same for the reverse. Anime styles that borrow from western are my jam. It always looks great.
i'm sad that nothing the west could ever produce could top the animation in this film
Here's one that's not a feature movie.
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise. Almost 30 years later and it still looks fucking amazing.
still waiting for her to make a 'i'm going to fist you' while embiggin her fist and taking aim at some villain.
and the villain going 'wtf' face. and someone telling ms marvel what she said and her getting all flustered.
What do you think of this? I think the faces look too much like adventure time
I fucking love the shit out of Guillaume Singelin's art. I cannot get enough of it.
The artist is Inoue Kiyoshirou, also known as Perestroika. The manga is called Service Committee. It's not easily found in any of the normal places anymore. Sorry. I assume you should be able to track it down somewhere if you look hard enough. There is also a sequel where the main girl gets to bang the teacher she has a crush on but she gets the shit raped out of her by a hideous gorilla-man first.
>I am completely ignorant of the topic at hand
Oh ok got you
When it's just influenced, yes. When it tries to be basically "manga", no. For instance, I like the one in your picture, but I dislike the alternative manga lines of both Marvel and DC.
