I was just doing my yearly peek into manga to see if there's anything I like and I have to admit that the manga shorthand that almost everyone follows in Japan is *objectively* fucking awful.

The characters are incapable of expressing complex emotions, they're fucking SAD or ANGRY or EMBARRASSED at the most basic level and this fucking sucks.

Male characters have so little effort put into them it's even worse than capeshit.

They draw gigantic puppy eyes on everyone but they forget that the most expressive feature is the MOUTH, which is drawn like a stupid line, no lips, nothing. On top of that they draw those stupid grins and other expressions that have no foundation in human body language.

I could go on for hours, I don't even hate manga, but I can't relate to this shit. Whenever I see one of these things in a comic, Western or not, I drop it instantly.

The only good thing about manga are speed lines, and they're incredibly underused in Western comics for some reason.

See My Life Me (or the like) of what I think is a bad anime influence. Or basically anime that looks like a wikihow stock photo.
It looks flat ,poor colors and dead. The writing is normally matched with the art style. Too many exaggerated emotions per second with little realism or relateability to the characters.

However a lot of modern cartoons have anime influence. Even very small things like pink hatching blush shade. Along with a few anime animation techniques. Like the dark screen and a white slash for an attack.
I normally find the art styles mingle together better when the artist themselves actually appreciates both anime and western cartoons.

Of course I like most cartoon styles and disney and whatever; however I prefer anime styles over the general comic book style. Most of the faces to me are filled with too many lines, bland, and barely memorable.
The minimalism in faces makes an exaggeration more memorable. I normally find with kids that watch disney or anime want to mimic the faces they just thought were funny or cute.(even older weebs will make the squinty happy face) I dont see this a lot with comic book styles.

I think The Rock Cocks mixes anime and western together well. I would say skullgirls is the best mash of westanime styles but they haven't made a comic.

Difference between manga and comic fight scenes is that manga decompresses the fuck out of fights. It gives you a lot of space to enjoy individual moments, but comics breeze through them with bigger key moments. More information per panel, but less of a story being told through the fight. Less about the action, more about the feats. I always liked Hitch's action sequences in The Authority though. Really grand and chaotic, but without using sound or visual effects to emphasize impact. Different from manga action in that regard but it shares the same decompression, so you can enjoy the fight. Lots of still shots that force your imagination to fill in the blanks.

Also to answer OP's question, it's good when it's a natural influence on the artist's style, but it's terrible when it's obviously mandated shit cashing in on weeb tweens that ends up looking like a heartless how-to-draw-manga book. Milonogiannis is a good example of the former, his art oozes Yoji Shinkawa and Shiro Masamune, but he treads the line between looking obviously western or eastern. Early Frank Miller is a great look at non-modern manga-inspired comic art too, just read Ronin and Lone Wolf and Cub back to back. You can really tell the difference between an artist who studied their influences and an artist who's pasting bug eyes over a pair of big tits.

Understanding Comics goes into detail over the differences in conventions between the west and east, and McCloud's book Zot! demonstrates a manga influence that goes deeper than art style. Like most things it's all in the execution.
