Join me /co/, let's read what is sure to be the best new Ongoing of 2015.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #01
For what it's worth, I like the art, I'm just happy to see something different.
>everyone sounds like they're bored as shit and emotionlessly read they lines from a script
That's exactly what I imagine whenever someone says "hipster shit"
Not shitting on art because it's actually not that bad aside from the weird SG face build and I enjoy watching poser/Jim Lee lovers getting butt blasted
Already read the issue.
Don't care about the artwork, and every single line of dialogue was trying so hard to be quirky and fun and out there that it all fell flat on its face. What a surprise.
It's like someone took a shit on paper and charged $4 for it.
No. It's stylized without being inconsistent (like let's say Ramos' is) and most of all, it fits the mood of the book so well (unlike Ramos' art).
I mean, it's no Lieber but nobody is. Except Lieber.
Everyone loves letters pages right?
the writing in this is so mediocre I can't get through it and the art, while interesting, is not enough to make up for the fact that SG now looks incredibly ugly.
look if you want her fat draw her fat, if you want a skinny nerd draw a skinny nerd, but don't put a fat girls head on a skinny nerd's body and call it a "realistic body type."
Those 3): mouths rustle my pyjamas. Fucking snowflake "muh style" webcomic artists. Fucks sake I don't even want to put in the effort articulating any further about it, you know yourselves.
>I loved the art long before he started showing up here
That writing style is really annoying to read in print, I really don't want anyone else to try and copy this. That's the only reason I have to want this thing to bomb - otherwise, whatever.
I still think movies about real men are better.
>every single page has commentary at the bottom of it like a webcomic's alt-text
I'm not even a hater, and I'm never against comics doing something different, but... this isn't very good.
It feels like a cheap knockoff of Spinnerette.
The art is inconsistent as fuck, and outright lazy and grotesque at times. It's not good stylization, especially when you look at the multitude of other much better looking stylized comics. The writing is cringe worthy, it's so fucking try hard but it all falls so flat.
Literally everything it's trying to do has been accomplished better, and by another marvel book no less? The fucking mrs Marvel book, for all the flaws with the pacing, actually has good fucking art and writing that's at least somewhat endearing.
It's not the worst, but it's not remotely good.
I'm definitely buying the Superior Iron Man team-up issue though. Tony was where she got her start, so it's kinda full circle except at some point, the part of the circle where you started got replaced by a chrome-plated jackass version of it that's been speedballing tremendously dangerous chemical substances and Extremis.
I admit, I laughed a few times at this. Don't like the art though.
Think I'll give it a chance. Like Deadpool, I feel like this might get repetitive after a few issues. Might be something I drop in and out of reading.
this isn't the worst comic I've ever read by a long shot
clearly you need to read some fuckin Chick Tracts
They aren't the worst I've ever read either but they might give you some fuckin perspective
I hate the way this is drawn. I can't quite explain exactly why. It just looks so Wacom-tablet-y.
There's no feeling to it, no sense that the artist has ever practiced figure drawing or even held a pencil, just typical webcomic backwards refined stylisation. With great cartooning you can always see the circles making up the characters, the confidence the artist has in assembling the underlying structure.
Is it just unfair to always find myself comparing the more cartoony cape comics to someone like Timm?
Imagine minding your own bussiness in the street and then a singing, super cheery chick with a tail and permanent derpface comes out of nowhere and beats your shit
What the FUCK is wrong with her hips.
Ok, review time: dialogue starts out like shit and gets slightly better when Kraven shows up.
Art looks awful. However at the same time I realize the artist knows what he wants to do, so i'll give it the benefit of doubt and say he still has to design his style properly, and it can get better in the future.
Plot is average as fuck, however the smaller details of dialogue are fun
But I sorta like new Batgirl, but I also know for sure that I instinctively and immediately hated this.
>the book is pretty shit
>low tier garbage
>/co/ rightly shitting on it
See, I can do it too. It's fun to just say things that are subjective and treat them like fact, but remember that it's wrong.
Two sets actually, finger talons and wolverine style knuckle spikes both retractable. The only times i can recall her using them was against Deadpool and Wolverine so i assume she avoids using them so as to not kill people.
Except in New Avengers where she massacred her way through an entire army of Hydra goons.
Batgirl was just another stupid attempt to pander to the mythical female demographic, it will never work.
Ms. Marvel is great, only idiots criticised it.
That was a totally valid contrast anon. Rich white girls have been known to engage in the act of getting knocked up by hoodrats for the purpose of getting back at daddy, only to be left saddled with a fatherless nigglet.
This anon is going to be left saddled with a shitty comic and meanwhile nobody will even give him a second thought.
>I'm going to go into my local and this crap will probably be staring me in the face under the till, beside all the new-wave-internet-artists making IDW cartoon-tie-in comics that appeal to the quirky adolescents buying POP vinyls
I'm not sure I can deal with seeing it in-person, I guess I'll just have to never go back.
>squirrel girl talks out her problems with her foe instead of punching them and giving them to the cops
kind of defeats the purpose of superhero comics but okay
>art is flat and bland
I don't like saying things like 'tumblr-tier' because it gives the impression that I'm trying to say it has some sort of political statement, even though tumblr is literally just a fucking blogging platform and is primarily filled with porn, just like the rest of the internet. But this art is a style I've seen across a hundred different artists, it has zero personality.
>Doreen fights other heroes' villains and random street thugs
Give her her own rogues.
>Galactus is showing up in issue 2
Okay just setting aside the stupidity of this just from a universal standpoint... since you're clearly not going to give her her own rogues, you're literally blowing your load in the second issue by pitting her against the worst shit 616 has to offer, presumably to defeat him in a nonviolent way as well. Hostess snack cakes, maybe, because no one's made that joke already in the last 3 months.
So, if I was making a squirrel girl ongoing, here's what I'd do.
I'd send her to her own city, somewhere where there wasn't a lot of heroes already in Marvel. Maybe somewhere considered a little silly, in real life. Like Des Moines.
I'd give her her own rogues gallery, made up of colorful, Silver Age feeling villains and have her have old school rock 'n' sock superhero fights with em as they do things like rob banks and perform art heists and stuff.
And once or twice I'd have big name Marvel heroes show up and job like fuck to these wacky colorful villains to imply that Squirrel Girl is fighting the worst of the worst.
thank you everyone for posting your opinions. you did a really good job today.
not that anon, but I'll try as much as possible to give a honest review.
the book could improve on humor that is not always working and often falls flat. the art could use some better faces, as they look just plain bad. the plot was okay, nothing special. the bottom commentaries feel like a bad idea as they didn't feel coherent and were a chore to read. the overall set-up is okay, and there is some potential, and it's possible that the book will have ms. marvel type of success, meaning that it will sell good digitally.
overall 5/10 with potential to improve
I guess I should have started making webcomics a few years ago. Apparently they're a valid portfolio-worthy art form after all, maybe now I too could be drawing for friggin Marvel off the basis of some half-assed web cartooning.
its so bad i cant even make out if squirrel girl is supposed to be toned or fat
no, but they must be entertaining. Doreen pointing out that Kraven is dumb for not hunting something tougher than Spider-Man isn't entertaining, it's like if they came to /co/ and went 'okay /co/, what's dumb about Kraven' and wrote the issue based on that thread.
I love how utterly uninterested in the whole thing Kraven looks during the whole fight. I'm not sold on the retarded cheeks but I'll give the artist that much.
It's also not Ryan's best writing by a long shot. It's okay for reading on /co/, but as it stands there's no way I'd pay for it.
It looks like a cheap webcomic. Artist is bad at depicting action. There's no atmosphere to any of the backgrounds, not interesting shapes, no hatching or shading, nothing, so it gives off that "flatness" you're talking about. Zero sense of perspective so many objects jist end up looking like wonky blobs. Horrible anatomy (just look at the guy on his tablet on page 10 or that walking black guy on page 5, just not sense of weight or gesture). Artist also sucks at character design (literally all of the black characters in this look the same, for example, and almost everyone is making that same fucking derp face).
It just looks so slapdashed and lazy, they couldn't even have bothered to draw the speedlines on Galactus in the last panel correctly.
>It just looks so Wacom-tablet-y.
I resent that as a poor-fag who can't buy a super nice tablet but I get what you mean. The problem is they have never studied drawing properly or developed a style, just gone for the easiest thing that is popular
This wasn't bad, but not really good enough for me to buy. It's nice to have slice of life-ish comics every now and then even if they aren't the best written or drawn
But of course /co/ will treat this as the worst comic of all time simply because it doesn't pander to them and assume this is just SJW/tumblr-bait and any attempt at discussing it will be met with whiny faggotry of the worst kind
read the thread and you'll note that the general reaction to it is a solid 'meh, will not add to pull'
The sad part is that if this book fails Marvel will probably blame the character and not the poor writing and art.
She's supposedly based on pic related, but the art is so shit that you can't tell.
there are lots of terrible artists with $5000 cintiqs and there are some great artists that use the cheapest wacom tablets
there isnt that much of a difference between them and having a better tablet wont make you a better artist
I liked the comic, but fuck this page made me mad
Having rules against pets in a dorm is not unjust. Hell, its really fucking justifiable for liability, damage, and just having 100+ kids with pets in one old broken down building
Yes I am autistic
Well the character is also the type of shithead who says such things as "I will hate you if you dare criticize my taste in decorating, even though we have to share a room with each other".
What I originally meant was that for better or for worse the comic has that typical sterile tablet-drawn webcomic look, but to avoid confusion with iPads and Nexus 7s and shit - the other kind of tablet - I named a popular brand of stylus-based drawing tablet. I have a Bamboo myself. I wasn't trying to imply shit about one brand over another, chillax.
I was about to say it was a caricature of a tumblr person who feels the entire world is out to get them when they in fact start most shit themselves, but I think parody gives the writer too much credit. Which would have been a funny twist on the roommate cliche
I assumed that was because it was a cartoon comic
I know mad magazine and nick comics do the mini comic at the bottom thing a lot
"All Ages" doesn't mean you can just say a bunch of bad jokes and that's okay. "All Ages" just means the content isn't explicitly gory, sexual, or political. And "All Ages" are not some answer to adult content. USG is just a comedy and, while it has some funny lines, has bad jokes in it.
Well... I liked it.
Hopefully these issues will go on sale, I rarely buy ongoing series these days. $3.99 and all, I wait for the 99c sales and get those. I think it is on the same verge as Adventure Time, and Regular show comics.
>Its intentionally shit
This has always been a dicey excuse for me; parodying the spiderman theme is already cliche and overdone as fuck
Really? If this is the worst comic you've ever read, you need to slum through some 90's Liefeld era Marvel. Or if you're feeling extra masochistic, go beyond Liefeld and look at his shitty apprentices like Tom Tenney (pic related). Maybe after seeing a few panels of wrinkly Iron-Man or wrinkly Cap with a wrinkly shield, you'll appreciate different art more.
We're honestly spoiled now. Thousands of artists from all over the world are being discovered and getting the chance to show their stuff. Squirrel Girl might be written horribly, and the faces may look like beaver anus, but at least it's different. Marvel took a chance, and I'm glad they're doing that instead of looking for samey Liefeld ripoffs 20+ years ago. All New Ghost Rider wouldn't exist then, but it does now for the same reason tumblr Squirrel Girl does.
Live and let live. There's something for everyone.
Eh, a little shaky but not bad for a first issue...
The only major drawback I have against this is that Doreen's lips are WAY too exaggerated
Looks like she just got a collagen implant
I Liked it. The art remind me of webcomics more than anything, but its still pretty enjoyable. And the story is ok for a first issue, so ill give it a chance to passe up later instead of whining like baby right away.
for real though I can't stand this comic but tumblr is going to shit itself and buy five copies each, they'll even brave walking into comic stores and letting nerds look-rape them to get this pile of crap
Different anon here.
I'm not sure that Batgirl deserves to be shit on. Sure, Barbara's characterization has kinda taken a left turn, but it's better than her characterization under Simone. And Babs Tarr's art really surprised me. I was ready to dismiss it as "Tumblr shit", but she knows how to give her art a sense of weight and movement; both necessary for cape comics but sorely lacking in Squirrel Girl.
>All New Ghost Rider wouldn't exist then, but it does now for the same reason tumblr Squirrel Girl does.
and that's why my reaction to this has been 'well it's a shame it doesn't look or read better' and not FUCK FUCK FUCK AAAAH MARVEL WORST COMPANY EVAR
maybe if it zombies on for a bit there might be a new creative team and it might suck less.
>>every single page has commentary at the bottom of it like a webcomic's alt-text
>get on /co/
>already threads about nigger power girl, World's End and this piece of trash
God damn it moot just fix /pol/ already
>blames pol because there aren't happy hugbox jackoff threads about PG, WE and this piece of trash
> You now have the Spider-Mna theme song stuck in your head for the rest of this issue. YOU'RE WELCOME.
Don't care how the rest of this pans out, I've found my justification for the cost of this issue alone.
GEE THANK YOU, Mister North.
Story is okay, reminds me of Marvel Adventures Spider Man. Could be better, but it's okay for what is supposed to be a joke book.
Art is indescribably bad.
>It's just her tail stuffed inside her pants. So it makes her butt look big.
Doesn't explain why she still has a huge ass in squirrel girl costume. Or why she has saggy, small breasts.
It's like they tried drawing her as ugly as possible.
Alright, quite a bit of the humor fell flat, and some aspects of the art could be improved (I like the style itself though). But overall it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. Hopefully it gets better.
Exactly, you want a circlejerk hugbox frottagefest where everyone tells each other how brave and progressive this and how proud women should be of it and how its great that fat, ugly women can be superheroes too and then everyone sucks down everyone else's cum
/co/ has such low standards, it is no wonder comics are going to shit
They make a web comic tier pandering book and your reaction is meh. This is why they keep appealing to tumblr as you idiots buy it anyway
Use the tail as a handle.
The artist was going for quirky, and fun, and that plus the stylized face results in a full on Punky effect deformity.
Looking at her design? I'm not looking forward to it.
The more interesting thing is I see obvious false flagged strawmen set up everywhere in the thread.
Dr Mcninja has ComicDB entries now. You don't. If you want to make the shit, make the shit.
Agree. The part where Kraven trolls the fuck out of her is the best part of the book.
The ass is a LIE anon. It's alll PADDING!
Hmm.... that MIGHT be so bad it's good teir.
Can we get a comic about Kraven hunting down the most rare super powered animals on earth please?
From the previous threads on this, some art anon noted that the position of her mouth and facial features was very strange on SG.
Pic related is the voice actress for "Punky" The downs syndrome girl..
Its not Tumblr shit, it's just shit.
Companies don't seem to understand there isn't a male and female/youth demographic, there's nerd and non-nerd ones (taste wise, there's nearly no distinction between female nerds and male nerds), and its night impossible to attract anyone that is not a nerd into the comic scene.
However every five years or so they try, and always get mediocre results.
Hopefully it can be used as an alternate form of the citations or editor comments found in comics, especially the older ones. Sadly this doesn't look hopeful with the current issue.
The thing is one or two always work, not because of the appeal to another group they just end up being okay. This is proof to them that their dumb strategy work even though it is a 90% fail rate
It seems like this book is designed specifically to annoy me. I hated everything about this book. The art is terrible and the writing is "so quirky" webcomic-tier trash.
I seriously couldn't even finish. I stopped a few pages before the end, it was just so terrible and grating. I read this like 10 minutes ago and I'm still livid.
>It seems like this book is designed specifically to annoy me.
The entire point of the book is to appeal to an audience who can only enjoy something to the extent that it pisses off someone like you
They would never admit it to themselves, certainly not in those words, but that is the actual appeal of this comic for the people it appeals to
Why else do you think SG is doing the fat tumblerina version of trollface through the entire book?
I think the joke is that Deadpool has only secondhand knowledge of most villains and is an unreliable aid.
A Spider-Man's Guide To Supervillains would actually be full of relevant and useful information.
This. A few cute moments and a couple of chuckles. The art is pretty unpleasant, but I never care much for art either way. Don't care enough either way to seek it out. Maybe I'll read issue two if its storytimed or I notice it in the big Win-O'.
No. Cut that out. Stop pretending like this artist knows what a fat ass looks like. It insults every legitimately fat ass out there.
Even Land might have done better, if for no other reason than he could've traced Kim Kardashian for those pages.
Ya'll niggas need to get some taste.
I could see this image being useful
OH BOY I WONDER IF THIS GUY'LL BE A LOVE INTEREST
>Definitely ethnic but not enough to be threatening
What is with the tumblr crowd and their love of this archetype?
too bad. I hoped for some guide.
because anytime someone uses nigger or sjw, he automatically is called /pol/. and when someone calls someone /pol/ he automatically becomes sjw.
it's a vicious circle
Hey guys, remember when I complained about capes not being fun anymore? Well, now I've changed my opinion: fun doesn't not justify this lack of quality in comics.
a lot of artist use the site
>saving minorities from white people
I don't even understand this one like only white people can only be victims or something?
Okay, the art wasn't quite as awful as I was expecting from the cover, but why does she find it so difficult to draw her face right? I mean, key feature of SG is her eye marks, and they're completely absent here.
>and are quick to call you a child -related insult
I have noticed this a lot recently, look at all the baby insults in this thread alone. Plus they seem to be doing a weird co-opt of the "you dont read comics" defence
>What is with the tumblr crowd and their love of this archetype?
They like similar fantasies to that are in most female books. Smart stand offish guys who are tall, they just have the racial twist to feel superior
>saving minorities from white people
>I don't even understand this one like only white people can only be victims or something?
White mugger harassing ambiguously brown hotdog sales man.
Though there was like two black people mugged the brown guy in the first page.
I'm not sure if kraven is actually white or not.
I'm not big on geography. Do the great lakes avengers count?
Or more likely a troll.
I think an easy, slack definition, is if they're so far left that they sound like the nutcases on the right. Like a leftist version of /pol/.
This is the ugliest looking art I've seen from Marvel since... okay, since that... "Ultimate FF"?... disaster. It's not even because he made her fat and inflated her lips, but that certainly doesn't help.
General praise of "progressive" stuff like it is unique or special when really it is nothing new
Using that to negate flaws in a book, if you don't also then you are racist/sexits/probably hate otherkin as well so opinion disgraced
Concern trolling to try and make you slip up (note to fun posters, this is the best way to do it)
Will switch from very nice to calling you a shitlord very fast
its not that he's white, its that he's a white guy mugging a brown skin guy.
anon >>68538685 almost had arguement where all the vitims here in the comics where ethnic and the criminals where whit. But there are two black criminals in the first page so it falls through.
>they're so far left that they sound like the nutcases on the right
SJWs love to complain about women dressing slutty. Just like pic related.
Okay, could the person who really wished for a Squirrel Girl comic please put the monkey paw down?!
As someone who mainly frequents both /co/ and /v/, it never ceases to amuse me that each board think the other is filled with SJW bullshit, while being somewhat blind to their own condition.
People talked about her as everywhere forces it down your throat
Same reason people talk about it in on /co/. People won't shut up about how amazing they are saving the pocs by making a black character like it is something new
Yeah. no. The joke with Squirrel Girl is that her crazy and impossible exploits are off panel. Once you put them on panel, that defeats the fucking purpose.
It'd be like if Michigan J. Frog is recorded and then everyone knows he can sing and dance. There's no fucking rest of the bit after that.
nah people made it political cause they want stuff to be grown up. They didn't realise you have to do it the other way around. so we get a load of half arsed statements in comics that people latch onto as they are simple to understand and fit what they already think
Yeah, pretty much.
/co/ has talked about how a SQ comic should be, and there were few good ideas. She's so overpowered that you can't really put up physical obstacles for her, which isn't a problem when she's being used as a joke or very sparingly. You can't have a "villain of the week" run with her - that goes against what makes her fun.
You could make the comic about her every day life, which is much more messed up for her, what with her insecurities and stuff. That's where her personal challenges lie. And I guess this comic took a stab at it..? But the art looks bad and the fight shouldn't have been included.
Make it a comic where every bit of action happens off-screen. SQ isn't about the battles themselves.
I was willing to give it a read /co/, really I did.
I don't even hate the art. It's meh art, but at least the artist seems to be having fun.
No, it's the writing. It's trying too hard. It's cringe worthy.
I still need to reed GLA, but that area is definitely defined as Midwest. None of us "fly over states" get much attention to be honest I just want more things to happen in Iowa besides Hawkeye flashbacks, and random cornfields.
Also should I just read all of GLA or are there especially good parts?
Holy shit, Clevinger can write better than this. This is stupid.
No. If this were a one-shot, or a special, maybe. But this is a series. Doreen has to define her personality (which this did a decent job at) and interact with other people (an okay start) who will become part of her supporting cast, and she has to have other ways of dealing with bad guys than just "throw squirrels at them until they give up" or "it happened off-panel, we don't have to explain it" because that will get old and tired quick. She has other abilities, she should use them.
The only thing this didn't do was start giving her her own rogues' gallery, but that's okay. I can wait a few issues for that.
Exactly. Like work in a sitcom. You don't see it because it's not about that. It's something she does off-panel. We could get a quick look every 4-5 issues, with her taking a phone call while dealing with crazy shit or something, but it should never be a "how will she defeat THIS guy?!" moment.
I was feeling this, didn't hate the art and I like the set up right up until they pussed out on the fight
I get the feeling the whole series is just going to be Doreen talking down to someone else's villain (who will have their classic silver age characterization) and using some absurd cartoon logic to make the villain of the month see the error of their way.
>Doreen has to define her personality (which this did a decent job at)
No it didn't, she is just a generic girl I couldn't name anything about her.
>interact with other people (an okay start)
one uninteresting and unlikeable prick
>and she has to have other ways of dealing with bad guys than just "throw squirrels at them until they give up" or "it happened off-panel, we don't have to explain it"
Making either a focus will become old quick. Especially as this artist can't draw action
>The only thing this didn't do was start giving her her own rogues' gallery
They aren't going to. This is just going to be references, it's Galactus next time
this anon >>68539766 gets it. Combat isn't interesting with her. The comic should swap daily life and action so that the dramatic hardship is her trying to buy milk while we see Doom defeat off panel with no explanation
>The only thing this didn't do was start giving her her own rogues' gallery, but that's okay. I can wait a few issues for that.
What enemy could threaten her?
Her "rogues' gallery" is her own insecurity (at least in the earlier days - don't know about her nanny days). How do you make an enemy that's threatening to her, when she's never shown fear and has defeated MODOK, Dr. Doom, Deadpool, Terrax, Thanos and more?
You either have to limit her powers, which goes against the joke, or create a new super being who is somehow being ignored by every other hero.
OR make it some jerk business man who wants the park removed so he can build a parking lot for noisy and polluting trucks. He works within the law, so she can't touch him, but he's playing dirty. That could work. Just no physical threats or fights.
>and she has to have other ways of dealing with bad guys than just "throw squirrels at them until they give up" or "it happened off-panel, we don't have to explain it"
Did not this happen? did she not throw squirrels at him until he decided to fuck off for better pray?
He wasn't a meme-spouting buffoon at first, no, but the only time he was ever a serious character was between then Rob Liefeld first drew him, and ... was Fabien Nicsieza? wrote him as a guy who wouldn't shut up.
I couldn't stop thinking of this while reading it.
this was about as funny as any penny arcade comic in the past few years
The resolution was limp and the art leaves a lot to be desired, but I thought it treaded the line between 'funny quirky' and 'obnoxious quirky' pretty well. Mainly through lack of the underlying insecurity that makes quirky obnoxious.
It put a smile on my face anyway, although I don't have some huge hateboner for webcomics so stuff like the alt text at the bottom doesn't set me off.
>Thinking the tail comes off
>When linking to the page where she says she tucks it in her pants
I'm not saying it's not the dumbest thing in awhile, but at least read what you're complaining about.
Kraven is (memory is fuzzy as to the ending in scarlet spiders) a lich that can only be killed by spider-man currently from what I can recall. You could probably use him as a human shield vs Galactus if you so felt like it.
>why she also has a fat arse the rest of the time makes no sense.
Because the artist wants her thick, but can't draw muscle, but can't draw the butt too big otherwise some guy might fap to it.
So we get something poorly done that plays it overly safe and doesn't manage to get the point across.
The biggest flaw a comic book artist can have is not translating the ideas of the script properly.
Squirrel girl with a secret identity is just plain wrong.
While watching Kraven do this would indeed be awesome I'm fairly sure an unstoppable Lich hunting endangered species and/or awakenng elder gods that nullify existence simply by waking up for the sole purpose of hunting is a BAD idea.
You have done a major act of evil right there .
>Hello, Doreen, my name is Nancy Frank. And this is my Frank, Frank.
Well, guess I gotta jump on the 'meh' bandwagon for this. I won't say the art is terrible, and in fact it's probably fairly above average for a cape comic if taken as a whole. But on almost every single page there's at least one thing that stands out as just awful. Usually SG's face or body, given how inconsistently they're done, but sometimes other things.
The writing is pretty much the same. It's generally fairly good, and even has some well done things here and there. But way too often I'll just come across a line that just... sucks. Doesn't fit, tries too hard, something.
With most comics the quality tends to average out, and you only notice peaks or valleys when you have a whole run to compare. This though... you can do it just about every page. On the whole I'd say it's a solid 6.5/10 for a first issue, but there's a few parts where it peaks at above 8/10, and some where it just plummets to 2-3/10.
If I had to use one word to describe it, it would be 'inconsistent'. Normally not a huge sin in a comic, but it's so exaggerated here that it's ridiculous.
