the only two trans characters in the comic are Jocelyne and Carla. Carla has been out for a while. Jocelyne is still struggling with it and is an adult. These are all characters who have had life experiences up to this point.

I can dig it when there's racial or sexual minorities around because those are the characters the author had in mind and they are characters. Lesbians who are just girls written as well as the other interesting female characters that happen to be together can be cute and honestly I think most people will probably be much happier if we stop making such a big honking deal out of sexuality anyway.

It does get annoying when webcomics go HEY LOOK WE GOT LESBIANS THIS IS TOTES SOCIALLY PROGRESSIVE, I have to agree. A lot of the time it's starting to feel like a checklist to avoid complaints about exclusion rather than organic character development when it shows up. And checklists don't make for great writing.

I'm all for an awesomely written black dude or a cool lesbian couple and other such things in a story, but it can feel...hokey, I guess? When it seems like the author is just trying to make sure he has a wide variety of races amongst his primary characters who also fall everywhere on the wide range of sexualities and gender identities, sometimes with the new trendy but poorly-understood one thrown in for taste.
