I like Shaun and think he's a good character for different reasons than his Anime counterpart. The homophobic traits are mostly due to Sadamoto projected, but hey, at least they're realistic.

It's not the same at all.
First of all, if anyone took Asuka's place in the Manga, it's not Karl but Shinji. Shinji was the one trying to suppress and hide away from his true feelings and pushing Karl away.
Karl was curious about humans and emotions, he used naive means to learn more about them through Shinji. That isn't anything like Asuka.
Karl never acts to intentionally hurt Shinji, he's being entirely genuine the entire time.

Things like miscommunication and abuse are seen in several other relationships in Eva as well (Gendo/Ritsuko). Choking (Ritsuko/Rei).
Using superficial things like that to say it's the exact same is retarded.
Neither the characters or dynamic are anything alike.

Unpopular opinion but to me Karl was even less caring of Shinji's feelings than Asuka. You can make the argument he had no idea how relationships work but remember how he basically said "haha your friend is dead" and guilt tripped Shinji to like him several times. He asked Shinji to kill him so that Shinji he will forever be in Shinji's mind and heart. It will be a guilt-ridden and hated memory but that's what he wants. Shinji is going to suffer forever because of him and that was his objective.

Karl was autistic as fuck, and not in the meme sense. His nurture (told that humans are garbage, death is necessary, he is the only hope that people or any creatures have and on their own, they're fucked up and doomed) deeply affected his nature (desire for love and affection, even as he knew so little about it). You can see in several panels that, when Karl says asshole things, he genuinely has no idea that people will react the way they do (anger and hurt). Karl cared about Shaun's feelings, but he only knew how to approach those feelings the way his own had been approached, presumably all his life.
If he didn't care about Shaun's feelings, he wouldn't have been so desperate not to be hated. This specific page, too, needs to be remembered, as well as the discussion with SEELE that followed.

Just finished rewatching EOE. I read once that Gendo intended to be the one to "lead" Instrumentality and make the big decisions. Does this mean Adam-based instrumentality can happen, since his hand has the embryo?
Will we see it Rebuild?

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding everything. Eva lore is still pretty complicated for me. I just thought it would be great to see a giant Adam listening to what Shinji has to say

Adam-based instrumentality would just be all the angels becoming one, there would be no humans/lilin.

The angels never had any intentions to start their own instrumentality, they just wanted to start an impact to wipe out the lilin on Earth.

Gendo being in possession of the embryo was needed, because you need Adam-based life and Lilith-based life to start a forbidden union in order to start an impact and then human instrumentality.
With the embryo and Rei/Lilith's favor, Gendo intended to be the one to lead it, but Rei refuses Gendo and chose Shinji instead.
