E&J is awful. There's not any good brandy that's cheap (sort of like Scotch). The best bang for your buck would prob be Courvoisier VSOP at $40-45, but that may be way more than you intend to spend.

Anyway, don't buy cheap brandy--waste of money. If you only want to spend less than $30, get bourbon, rum or vodka.

Not him but it's less addictive than booze.
Given that even heroin is less horrible than booze, it's not such a great compliment.
That being said, it's easier to switch addiction to a healthier one than to stop everything. I use cannabis as a clutch, it's not perfect but at least I'm not killing my pancreas.

Past midnight, day 2 done. 24 minutes into day 3. Feeling ok, aside from the terror, nightmares and dumbshit cravings. I think I'm over the acute hit. Really mild WD after my first ever successful taper. Would recommended tapering.
Wonder if I'll still be able to come to al/ck/ if I can keep this up. This place helped me to fucking stay alive when at my absolute lowest. Too many reminders of the lifestyle, too many 'are you me?' moments.

Why are cooks always alcoholics? No offense to the skilled cooks around the world, but I mean we all came here in the first place because we liked cooking. Ive worked in restaurants and if they cooks aren't drunk at work, they are always getting drunk in the parking lot after work. So what gives?
>>
>>9418717
The one where I had no idea for an edition, only hoped /pol/ wouldn't follow.

>>9418725
I come to remember the bad parts, being an asshole to everybody in my life, waking up withdrawing too much to pour a glass from a fucking 1.25L bottle, not eating for days and consequences, etc.

>>9418779
>am i gonna seizure
Possibly.
Tingling worsen withdrawals each time you stop like that, that's why you should taper or do benzo and not go cold turkey.
>>
>>9418651
It's literally 1000X less harmful than alcohol. Worst thing you can do is take too much at once and you get nauseated and have to lie down for 2-3 hours. You won't crash a car killing people, lose your job, lose friends/family etc. etc., just might get dizzy and have to lie down. It really is far superior to alcohol.
>>
>>9418676
I did that in a span of 30 hours and worked the next day, thought I was ok till the end of the shift when I was literally shaking so hard I couldnt use my mouse. the cursor was all over the place. Never had a withdrawl like that before. I played it off as anxiety from hurricane irma but honestly scared the shit out of me. Ive gotten the shakes before, but never in a crippling way. I had to walk home from work because I was scared to drive.
>>
Retarded question:

I drank for like a month straight and stopped coldturkey. I had very mild withdrawals for a few days. Can I binge on the weekends now without fear of withdrawal? I know kindling lowers your threshold for withdrawal and I've heard of people getting withdrawal symptoms after a weekend of heavy drinking, so I'm not sure if I can go back to just getting fucked up on the weekends.
>>
>>9418782
distraction from a shitty life, anon.
>>
I am up to having 10 ounces of hard liquor a night, if I don't measure my drinks it gets out of hand.

Sometimes I am able to lie to myself and come up with a reason I shouldn't drink, like having an outing planned that night. When I buy into it I can go a few nights without touching the stuff.

Am I a lost cause at this point, or would actual human contact possibly pull me back?

How do i have a sober life? I usually smoke weed but when i can't get any i become a hardcore alcoholic. Others get liver failure after 10 years of 5 shots a night because they never did any of that.

well some benzos don't hit as hard, so there's less potential for addiction. Just a thought. Klonopin works great for anxiety, but my body craves it less the next day than if I took xanax. Anyone else short-term sober? Man it's a good feel. Scared to death I'll soon relapse and lose this cosiness.
Third day of no booze or benzos, after a taper. That's a big deal for me. No craving today, even though I've got 33L of cider here.
Been smoking like an eighth of weed daily though. Woke feeling amazing, level of comfy makes me feel a feel of cosy so sublime, I feel so soothing a feel it takes me back to childhood.
Weed will run out today and I'm not going back to associating with dealers all the time, so I'm gonna spend one more day floating on a cloud of comforting THC from morning to night, then tomorrow is the real test. Actual sobriety. No pro help, no social support structure, no weed. Got to fight the devil bare-knuckled and unassisted, to the death. If I relapse again I honestly think it'll kil me.

The myth of making booze is that you always have to deal with methanol. You don't. Fruit pectin creates methanol, that's why wine gives you a horrible hangover. If you don't have pectinase, you don't have methanol. Regardless I throw out 150ml of every 3 liters of distillate from a stripping run. It's mostly acetone like shit, ethyl acetate and whatnot. That mixture right there is actually tomato based.

115L of water
30Kg Sugar
1326ml tomato paste (8.5cans)
5tsp Citric Acid
380g Yeast
1 tsp Epsom salt
2 campden tablets in water

That finishes in 5 days and makes enough booze for half a year.

Is there any other tips you can give me or is that it? I see that you should preferably have a high quality termometer to be able to respond to the various volitale compounds evaporating.
Could freeze distilling with cryogenic liquids be an option due to the 15 degree difference in freezing point, or is it not worth the hassle?
Considering ethanol has the lowest boiling point too.
Ethyl acetate has almost the same boiling point as ethanol, but the freezing points are much farther apart.

>>
>>9420921
To add to that I actually feel more confident sober than drunk, it's like I understand that I'm inhibited and I get impaired. Anybody else gets shy when drunk, I think that's pretty atypical
>>
>>9420885
Obviously you don't want a shitty thermometer but it's not that critical. Substances will start to evaporate well before their literal boiling point. For example, if you put a pot of water on the stove to boil you'll notice that the bottom of the lid will fog up with condensation well before the water is actually boiling.

So even if you have a super-precisely made still and it's running at exactly, say, 65C there will still be some ethyl acetate adn ethanol coming out of the still even though we haven't reached their respective boiling points yet.

This is why distillers commonly discard the first stuff that comes out of the still (commonly called "the heads") when it's come up to the proper temperature. And likewise the last stuff to come out of the still, aka "tails", is also discarded.

Freeze distillation certainly is a thing. That's how many of the "beers" with crazy high ABVs are made. But it is a costly process so it's usually only used for expensive specialty products.

Yeah, that's a kind of a reflux column.

It's simply a tube with a bunch of surface area inside it. That gives space for liquid to condense out of the vapor inside and drip back to the bottom of the still.

When I make them for booze I stick copper pot-scrubbing pads down inside the column. Anything that adds surface area and can withstand the chemicals/temperature will work.

Making a sugar wash is cheaper, simpler and gives better end results though. The apple juice distillate tastes nice but it's less clean and pure.

Maybe some crossed wires, but my basic recipe is for homebrew cider/apple wine at a very low cost.
So two very different things, with brewing being far more accessible than distilling spirits.
Distilling takes equipment and time.
I would never try making prison wine or such concoctions when I can safely brew goodish cider instead.
Good luck with the distilling I do not have the room, but if I did I might think brewing would be more worthwhile, considering the price of 40% ethanol, would be interested in a cost breakdown for moonshine??? vs real though. :):):)

ok, 'turbo' yeast creates so many fusils and off putting tastes that it's far more of a problem that using bakers yeast. It will give you 18% alcohol, but that alcohol will make you wish you were dead. My booze gives you 13% with very low fusils that you can drink from the first extraction. I've drank turbo yeast sugar wash single distilled and unfiltered and felt better than with most store bought booze. I distil small batches slowly in an all copper still, that may help though.

I have yet to try baker's yeast but already bought soem. I know it's supposed to taste a lot better so I have high hopes if I already enjoy my current results. I have tried to use champagne and wine yeast and a specific vodka yeast (sort of a semi-turbo designed to get a relatively clean sugar wash result in a week for potstill plebs like me) and the last one was the cleanest so far. Now that the weather is getting cooler I will try a nice patient baker's yeast batch soon.

Do you do any filtration at all? And to what abv do you dilute?
>>
>>9418779
You need to come off the sauce slowly if you are going to do it. that's why people die in rehabs they go cold turkey and it fucks them up.
>>
>>9421900
imagine a bread taste in a liquid, also lots of residue because low volume alcohol before the yeast shit the bed.
>>

http://shuggo.com/birdwatchers/calculator.htm

I drink the 'low wines' because I'm lazy and it tastes so good. But I made a proper vodka a few times and it tastes like a mild vanilla if anything at all at 50%.

My Low Wines come off at 65% and 55% for the next handle. That's what I drink it at. No filtration that's pointless. If you create high or low fusils with turbo it's not worth it.
>>
>>9418779
Kindling.
>>
>>9421917

There's no bread taste at all in Birdwatcher's. If you had a taste carry over after distillation it would be tomato, but it just doesn't happen at all. This is about making EtOH and nothing else. That's how factional distillation works.
>>
>>9421900

My Birdwatcher's Bakers yeast batch finished in 3 days. Nothing patient about it. 5 days max on most batches. I actually hyperventilated walking into the room with the 300 Liters of fermenting booze because of the high CO2 content. Kinda dangerous.

By proper vodka do you mean running it twice or thrice or something?

>My Low Wines come off at 65% and 55% for the next handle. That's what I drink it at. No filtration that's pointless.
I like it the best fresh, but if it's a few days older running it through activated charcoal a few times improves it desu.

>If you create high or low fusils with turbo it's not worth it.

Good evening friends, I hope you are all doing well.
>>
>>9421939

Not like booze is not worth drinking, it's booze. But having all of those off flavours isn't worth the extra 5-6% alcohol you get from the low attenuation yeast strains. They're bread to live in high alcohol environments, but they produce shit we don't like. I make a shit load of 'natural' booze that immediately tastes good right out of the vat, so losing the extra percent per liter isn't a problem to me. Birdwatcher absolutely nailed his recipe while he was alive, 20 minutes after I pitch it, it's almost dangerous to be around its so active.

As for fresh, ahhhh not that important, I like the sodium bicarbonate to work on it for a while to deal with the 'volatiles' for a bit. It converts higher alcohols into ethanol over time. If you could add sodium carbonate itself instead of baking soda it would do the job in no time. I just can't find food safe sodium carbonate around here. It's "washing soda" here and it has perfumes in it.

It's so idiot proof I can't even sell it better. This is my recipe for a giant brute food safe container.

115L of water
30Kg Sugar
1326ml tomato paste (8.5cans)
5tsp Citric Acid
380g Yeast
1 tsp Epsom salt
2 campden tablets in water

The campden tablets are against contagion I presume? Do you ferment with open vats or was that just for the picture?

That's the yeast. Campden tablets are for dechlorinating. I get water from Lake Huron.
>>
>>9421988

Open covered. I tried to hermetically seal them, but it's a pain in the ass and not worth it. Just keep dirt out of them and bugs and you're fine. I've had vats sit around for half a year without any change at all. It's essentially wine, it kills everything.

>>
>>9422344
>It's a start for young guys
I think it's a load of shit
The time to be ruthless and put in the solid work needed to have a life worth living is when you're in your young 20s. Preferably earlier, but teens are too stupid really to do it right.

Don't just get a shit job to cruise your 20s.
You're never getting that time back and once it's gone, you'll be stigmatized for life
>It says here that you washed dishes for 6 years. Do you have any other experience?
You'll be labelled a retard and it doesn't matter if you have a university degree with honours. No one is going to want to hire you for anything above menial labour because lack of experience begs the question of why didn't anyone else hire you?

Yeah, that's true I guess.
Journey of a thousand miles starts with a first step and all that shit.
For NEETs though I'd recommend washing dishes. So long as you look remotely clean and can show up on time, you'll be hired. And you don't even need to talk to anyone.
Stocking shelves leaves you open to normies asking you where the fucking cornflakes are

I didn't go to my own brothers wedding because I was drunk and had crippling anxiety around all his wifes hot ass friends. I got up and got dressed, Had a few drinks for courage then wound up getting hammered drunk. Called a taxi then had second thoughts and cancelled the taxi.

I went to my best friend's wedding last year. I was sober when I arrived but not when I left.
I didn't get so bad, but I ended up talking about how much I didn't think it was a good idea to our mutual friend. I really hope I didn't say anything load enough to be overhead.
I mean, it it really was a bad idea. They've only been dating for less than a year and she's got all kinds of mental problems. And I was kinda sour that I wasn't offered to be best man despite being the groom's best friend for 15 years. I was just kinda shoved in the corner.

Whatever. It was still rude of me to talk bad then, even if they didn't hear me.

seriously? I also get the urge to masturbate more when hungover. My theory was that your "higher cognitive" processes are hindered by the hangover, making way for your more basic instincts to occupy yourself. I also notice craving savory/salty food when hungover, which fits with the theory that a hangover increases your basic instincts (eat and fuck).
