actually, just take a look at pics of real men's skating costumes:

-yurio's feather-y things would likely be organza/chiffon or actual feathers
-that black flame-y part at the bottom is sewn TO the costume and would have to be made of some sort of stretch material (not that weird pleather)
-same with the silver parts
-figure skating costumes rarey have big blocks of color like that with no detail... often the edges between color blocks are outlined with rhinestones or sequins, even if they are the same color as the fabric. it adds depth & texture
-if it feels awkward to walk in you sure as shit wouldn't be able to perform in it
>>
>>9274289
This is why I want to make Yuri's agape outfit so badly... I just really need to lose weight first so I don't hate myself in it.

MomoCon's hosting a Cosplayers on Ice event this Sunday where's there's bound to be a ton of YoI cosplayers so I'll take a bunch of photos there and report back if y'all want. Even if there's nothing great it'll be a good representative of what the average cosplays for this series will look like.
>>
>>9275224
>Cosplayers on Ice event
This sounds like fun both to skate at and to watch. PMX had a rink nearby and there were YOI cosplayers there both days, but the con didn't partner with it specifically
>>
>>9275231
Yeah, it was really fun last year and had a huge attendance, so I'm excited. Can't skate, sadly, because I twisted my ankle when ice skating last week...

There's a reference for the actual materials the designer was imagining:

>>
>>9274289
Agreed. These are all good points. A skater needs to be able to have a full range of movement, including being able to tuck themselves in for various spins and jumps. Another point that YOI cosplayer wanting to do the skating costumes should note is that they shouldn't walk about in unguarded blades off the ice, aside for on the rubber matting areas in rinks. Especially if they want to then try to skate afterwards on the same skates. The blades can damage flooring, just as the blades likewise get damaged.
>>
>>9275312
onto this, not doing a YOI cosplay, but another skater, has anyone come up with ideas of making "fake" skates? Or modifying skates to be con-floor friendly? The idea of some kind of clear support on the foot comes to mind (think of clear bottom shoes for example) but I haven't seen anyone attempt it yet. I thought about buying skates and replacing the "blade" with wood or something so that the floor will be fine but still have the look of a blade on my foot, but I would still need better support than a strip of wood to walk around.
>>
>>9275321
The only thing that comes to mind if using real blades is to use clear blade guards. You also really do not want to be wearing skating boots all day. Actual skaters don't. Ive seen the damage to feet that skating boots can do to feet - it's not unlike the damage that pointe shoes deal to ballerinas' feet.

>MomoCon's hosting a Cosplayers on Ice event this Sunday

I'm thinking about skipping this year cause it's likely to rain. Last time it rained it was a huge annoyance cause it was cold, wet, and hard to take any decent photos.

But I am still slightly tempted to see what YOI cosplays will be there.
>>
>>9275328
Good luck finding those in men's sizes
>>
>>9275224
>just really need to lose weight first so I don't hate myself in it.
I know that feeling. I'm doing Yuri's street wear from the earlier episodes (I want to own that jacket and shirt so badly) and I cringed a little when I had to get Size 7 black skinny jeans for him. I'm already too tall and too old to pull off a teen but since he wears sunglasses and a face mask I figured I could use one or the other to help me out. The weight though.. well, easier said than done.

It's times like this where I almost wish we could have some sort of board "Get Cosplay Fit" group where all we do is use it to motivate by posting how many steps we've taken, miles walked, and weight loss. It's really hard to exercise and be motivated when you're doing it by yourself. It's not worth the /fit/ invasion though.
>>
>>9275378
Most of the skates in the show are black, which should be a lot easier to track down. Men's dress boots would be the best style to look at. Just avoid the combat/work boot styles.
>>
really stupid question but i have no experience with skating or creating skating costumes... how do skaters get their costumes on? i don't see any zippers on real skating costumes so is it over the head and then putting on a pair of modesty panties underneath?

Skater here.

If you're asking about female skating costumes the panties are attached and usually you either pull it on, there is an invisible zipper, or there is a clasp at the neck like a swimsuit.
>>
>>9275639
I'm laughing, because as a synchronized swimmer I can confirm female skate costumes work the same as swim suits, to the point where we 100% copy trends from you guys and even use the same costume makers.

>>9275537
In addition to what >>9275639 has already said regarding invisible zips and clasps, like with swimming costumes, skating dresses are usually made of lycra, which also helps with pulling them on. It's the same for the mens' costumes. Use of elaborate sequins, beading, fabrics like chiffon for the skirts or overlays, etc, are very very common. If you see 'bare' skin, it is often covered my flesh-toned thick stockingette type fabric. A great example of this (and of brilliant skatin in general)g, is Evgeni Plushenko's Sex Bomb gala routine, which is one of the funniest routines I've ever watched. If you can't see the skating boots, they will be covered by the fabric of the tights or pants. It's worth studying various skating videos on youtube, look at both the men and womens figure skating. Plushenko is a genius, I wouldn't be surprised if he was at least some of the inspiration behind Viktor, and I know he's a huge fan of YOI. There are tons of videos out there. I can't recommend more recent skaters to watch, as it's been a while since I've followed figure skating. A while back there was a very good example of a very simple but dramatic mens routine costume - a French guy iirc did a superb Matrix routine and his costume was a good illustration of the depth of detail in 'simple' costumes/ blocks of colour point someone mentioned earlier.
>>
>>9276707

I think a lot of that has to do with the non-main characters not having much screen time aside from a few lines and a skating routine. It's hard to really grasp who they are otherwise.. except Georgi and Minami.

Pretty sure it's some type of twist in the front. Pic related is from Pattern Magic vol 1
>http://ancien-nouveau.blogspot.com/2009/11/pattern-magic-vol-1-draped-top-p59-60.html

But look up "blouse with twist" or "jersey twist" to get similar pieces.

I really wanna do Yuuri's free skate costume too especially because that sheer portion in the center has the potential to look really flattering and give me the illusion of a waist.
>>
>>9277624
I definitely laughed.

I wonder what the ratio of cosplays is going to be this summer when con season is in full force? I'm guessing casual wear Yuuri is going to out number everything by a lot since it's closet cosplay and chubby friendly which isn't bad at all, just that I'm afraid it'll be like looking into a sea of Homestuck trolls with all that same look. Second guess is that Yuri will be second most popular because casual wear as well while there will be very few Victor's only because of the hairline requiring lace fronts. Also even fewer young Victor's which is a shame because I'd love to cosplay that as well.

do reeaaallly young victor. short & round face can pass as a kid, depending on your body type.

>>
>>9283309
>mfw piercings and tattoos ruin a good cosplay
>>
>>9283494
They won't even get past peace bonding. It's the equivalent of bringing a real sword to a convention and trying to claim it's alright because it's in the sheath. They wouldn't let you past the checkpoint at my con and we even go further to state if you buy one in the dealer's room you have to immediately leave the con and take it off con property and put it somewhere before you're allowed back. They even have us look for a special colored tag on people coming out of the dealers room that signals they've bought a sword or other weapon inside so they can't sneak back into the con itself with it.

This summer is going to be an absolute shit show with all the little highschool weebs going to their first cons and ignoring months of cons going "No don't bring skates" and acting butthurt when they get to a con and staff tells them either get rid of their TOTES APPROPRIATE prop or have their badge taken.

I don't have the mental willpower to suffer that much, especially when I want to cosplay YoI myself.
>>
>>9284065
To be fair, there are cons I've been at that allowed real swords if they were peacebonded (they were zip tied shut during peace bonding).

I'm still 100% on the no ice skates at cons train, but it's not unheard of for steel to be allowed if it's been properly handled.
>>
>>9284065
>>9284181
they could zip tie the skate guards onto the skates during peacebonding which takes away some of the danger, but you know there are weebs who are going to throw a shitfest because "THEY'RE JUST SKATES, NOT WEAPONS!!1ONE!"
>>
>>9284181
>>9284190
Maybe we're just strict here but to me that sounds like a recipe for disaster.
>>
>>9284181
I almost feel like letting people just walk around with skates they've never worn before so they can learn that they are horrible to walk around in for more than 15 minutes.
>>
>>9284354
These kids who probably only wear one pair of converse everyday think they can just go to a con in strappy platform stilettos with fishnet stockings. Always see the ones leaving fucking barefoot. Princess Tutu all over again.
>>
>>9282765
I'm also short and very round faced, but I'm going to go for cosplaying young Victor anyway haha! I bought a long silver lace front wig for him in the 11/11 sales, I haven't done anything with it yet but I'm relieved that it's actually quite nice
>>
>>9281169
Do they have any social media? Like Weibo or Instagram? I want to check them out.
>>
>>9284190
That would be a recipe for disaster still, big tripping hazard, and still a risk to the skates and the flooring. You'd also damagae the blades just by walking around with them with the guards tied on. Easiest solution - don't take ice skates to cons.
>>
>>9284609
Yup, pretty much this, except that with skates there's the hazard to others as well as oneself. I can sadly foresee lots of potential for cuts and scratches, damaged skates and buildings, and broken limbs from people tripping up over the toe-picks while trying to walk. That's even not necessarily in the cons themselves.
>>
>>9285168
Do you still have a link to the wig? I've been looking through the lace front search term's pages, but I haven't found any that look right.

>>9283303
I'm glad they addressed it at least. Not excited to see people bitching about it anyway
>>
Adding to the skates-debate: what if someone wore skates but they unscrewed the blades so it's literally just the shoe itself. Obviously it gets rid of the issue of safety, but would the comfort be any better? Like, at all?
>>
>>9285310
Literally just get actual normal boots that look like skates. Not hard to find, way comfier.
>>
>>9285312
Everyone's suggesting granny boots in thread, but they look nothing like actual skate shoes and idk why everyone's insisting they do. I've been looking for weeks and turning up nothing :(
>>
>>9285310
You can buy the boots themselves without the blades on, but they can still cost quite a lot, and will wreck your feet if you wear them all day. Like the mention of wearing pointe shoes for Princess Tutu cosplays, they will damage your feet if worn all day, even if worn correctly. They are specialist equipment. Skaters will wear trainers with their fancy costumes outside of the side of the rink's protected rubber floor area. Just decorate or get some trainers clse to what they wear in the show, and leave it at that.

Why don't people just buy a skate bag and use it to keep all their stuff in. At least it gives the illusion of having skates with you when you actually don't and you have a handy (and pretty big) bag to use. They could literally just wear sports shoes and they'd be way comfier.
>>
>>9285568
The skate argument usually pops up when talking about the skating costume with the excuse of "if my character is in their skate costume why wouldn't they being wearing their skates. "
>>
>>9285310
They are very stiff, tight boots not built for heel-to -toe walking motions so no. It will be only slightly easier to walk.

There's so many other options and literally no one gives a fuck if you aren't wearing skates on a con floor. Also many of the outfits have the skates covered anyway

Because people want to whine about it being realistic.

Honestly if you take the blades out of this photo they just look like black boots so I don't know why everyone HAS to have skates.

The other thing with walking around in actual skates is that if you follow the references in this picture, three of the skaters I expect to be cosplayed the most have special blades: Victor's are gold, Yurio's are black, and JJ's have a shape seen on super expensive Wilsons and MKs.

You can fix that stuff easily in post for a shoot, but at a con setting there's literally no point fighting to wear them for "accuracy" if they're inaccurate anyway, lol

Seriously, yeah. If they want to take accurate photoshoots they should just find a skating rink. I live almost two hours from one but even I'm planning on going for photos when I'm in the area even if I have to use a damn selfie stick to take them.

That's one perk of this series at least, selfies and Instagram are in every episode so it's realistic to take selfies of yourself.

There's a part of me that really wants to cosplay Phichit since I adore his short program costume and I don't think he'll get much cosplay love, but even though I'm actually part Thai I still look like a basic-ass white girl unless I actively point it out. Should I even try for accuracy?

The general rule-of-thumb for darkening/lightening your skin for cosplay is get a lightweight concealer/foundation no more than two shades lighter or darker than your usual tone. Anything more than that tends to look awkward

Work be damned, I took these pictures for you today. Sorry it's a bit dark.

Positives: natural looking hairline, no cheap Chinese frizzy scalp, inside has sewn-in combs, smooth and long. Quality is pretty nice. Makes for a pretty thick ponytail, so will need thinning.

Negatives: the colour is a smidge on the warmer side of silver, so under certain lighting conditions (eg in my bedroom with beige curtains) it can look blonde? Definitely light silver though but I had to go from room to room when I first got it. Also I've taken it out of the packaging a few times now and it's starting to tangle at the bottom but I guess that's what you expect with long wigs anyway. Nothing a good spray and comb won't fix.

Would recommend, but see what you can find on taobao first, they might even have 12/12 sales

>>
>>9285666
I was about to mention this as well. Gold blades for skates are seriously expensive. You were already looking at spending something around the £500 mark for a set of decent boots with gold blades about10 years ago. I'm not sure on current prices, but they still won't be cheap. You can also tell the difference between cheaper and more experienced boots, and characters such as Victor and the two Yuris would not be in cheap boots. Do you really want to drop that kind of money on something you can't use properly?

I second the skates bag idea as a way to make it look like one has skates with them not not have any inside. It's honestly the best solution.

That's not beading, those are rhinestones glued on, which is just as hard to do.

I once had to cover a skating dress in rhinestones for a performance (Similar to picture)
Since I thought it wasn't going to be hard, I delayed starting the dress until the night before the dress rehearsal.
And so I ended up pulling an all-nighter to finish the dress and regretting my life choices.

If anyone is interested in using rhinestones on their costumes I can share a link to the skating designer who made the rhinestoning tutorial that I was following.

Here is the video. Most of the video is just a giveaway contest. The actual stoning of the dress starts at (3:44) and again at (43:53).

A couple of tips from my own personal experience.

I used both Gem Tac and E6000 for my dress, but I like E6000 more because Gem Tac comes out like watered down Elmers glue and if you're working with multiple gems, they will slide around.

I just used a tweezers, a pin and a pencil with some sewing thread primer on it to pick up gems.

Lastly, I really wished I used a syringe when I started. It decreases the amount of glue fumes.
>>

I'm not sure why no one would recognize you? It's not changing the hairstyles or anything, it's just altering your makeup to avoid looking like you're trying to be a 5'7" teenager and how you present yourself when you're in costume.

I do decoden as a hobby and I can offer some tips as well if anyone wants them since finally it looks like my hobby has some cosplay use.

>E6000
This stuff is a godsend and I swear by it.. but only if you get the right kind. The fumes are terrible though, set up either outside and enjoy nature or get a fan going.

>tweezers, a pin, and a pencil
They have specialty pencils on eBay for picking up beads/rhinestones (I call it all beads by default sorry!) but in my experience they don't work so good. It's easier for me to just dump some rhinestones in a little lid container and pick through with my tweezers. Do get craft tweezers though!

>wished I used a syringe
I haven't personally tried a syringe but with how quick E6000 dried for me I don't see it working well unless you have extras or are doing your gluing all in one go. Personally my trick is getting "E6000 Bead & Jewelry" which has a special nozzle that attaches syringe tips to the end and then I just buy a bulk bag of tips in various sizes depending on how detailed my work is. I've straight up used regular E6000 after using the Bead & Jewelry version and I won't ever go back to the regular again because it's messy and hard to keep the glue where you need it. If you're doing any sort of craft that involves gluing down beads of any kind, get the Bead & Jewelry version. I can't speak for how well it'll work on fabric since I've only used plastics though.
>>
>>9287517

>E6000 Bead & Jewelry

Oh my god, thank you for mentioning this. If I knew an E6000 with a nozzle tip existed, then maybe stoning wouldn't have taken so long.
>>
>>9287620
When I discovered it, it was relatively new and no one had really talked about it but I seriously think it's the greatest thing ever. You just have to deal with clogged nozzles so buy extras.
>>
>>9287100
having done both beading and glueing rhinestones for similar purposes, I have to say beading is much harder. I'm not saying rhinestones are easy, but there's no way in hell you would have finished hand beading something that detailed in one night.

>And last (for now) we have Yurio’s Agape costume. The anime rendition of this one is actually pretty faithful to the original design. Most of the changes seem to be primarily about making sure it’s readable on screen––the white mesh is rendered in black, the more subtle rhinestones are replaced with sparkly rainbow ones and there are additional dark grey details.

>>
>>9290458
I love and cringe at when they say this but then go out in obvious rental skates to 'figure skate'. Can't wait til someone tries to do a jump and fucks it.

Also I wonder how many badly fitted cheap skates these cosplayers are buying online, someone is definitely going to break an ankle by not doing them up tight enough or something lmao
>>
>>9290729
So many of my friends are buying skates off Amazon and I'm just sitting here like ???

Skates are something you need to try on in person, usually lots, until you find the right ones. Simone is definitely going to fuck themselves this winter and I'm going to cackle when it happens
>>
>>9290426
Same. I don't have any desire to actually cosplay this series but I love making dancewear and menswear. This series is a dream come true. Hoping to cash in on the commissions crowd. Though unfortunately my local area is really young and therefore very cheap. Other than select clients, it seems all I ever make are hoodies and kigus.
>>
>>9290458
I use to do figure skating when I was younger and I can't wait to see a cosplayer damage their ankle trying to do a jump when they have no training
>>
>>9290760

I know it's taking on cost yourself which may make it a no go but have you considered making Yuri's Eros costume for the most average height and weight out there and then selling it?

I bet someone will fork over a couple hundred for it at least.
>>
>>9290763
Same here. Even simple jumps like a waltz jump can fuck you up if you don't know what you're doing
>>
>>9290733
I love that the show tries to be realistic so they should have thrown in a small bit with Yuri training with a harness in his early days to show people there's way more to it than jumping
>>
>>9290763
I say this all the time. I'm tired of these kids thinking they can just get on the ice and look ok, this isn't biking or swimming, kids.

I wonder how many people bought skates online and are trying to skate on unsharpened blades, lol.
>>
>>9290839

I totally didn't know about harnesses. I always thought jumping looked dangerous as fuck so having a safer way to learn looks neat.

I watched my cousin learn on a harness, its 100% how everyone learns. I cant wait for the first reports of cosplayers attempting jumps and fucking up.

>>
Hey Anons!
Anybody have references for this outfit? Especially the back and the bottom? I want to sew this but I can't find decent references anywhere ...
>>
>>9290844
So many... I do hockey so I'm at the rink all the time, there have been at least 10 weeb kiddos in brand new figure skates and shitty Cosplay wigs. I feel bad for the actual figure skaters who are just trying to warm up during public skate.
>>
>>9290844

Yeah, as someone who comes from a warm country with no snow, I spent last winter at a different country and tried skating at a ice ring.
Apparently I was doing everything wrong, some old coach pulled me aside and explained to me I tied my skates wrong and that I was risking a serious ankle injury skating with loosened ties.

He sat me down and proceeded to tie them properly. Which makes me think that people who aren't used to skating can make serious mistakes aside from trying to copy jumps and choreographies. I couldn't even walk in a straight line my first time.
>>
>>9282765
Why not be Yuri's mom?
>>
>>9290924
I dunno, our cosplay group has a victor & yuuri cosplay set who have been consistently skating two or three times a week and inviting everyone along on Saturdays for months now. The Yuuri originally bought shitty second hand skates & then a couple weeks later made the investment on a properly fitting pair. I mean, there's also six or seven weebs in closet cosplay and bright wigs who are tripping over themselves, but we're all having fun.

I don't think it's wrong or something to laugh at when a flock of anime fans are all trying out the latest anime related hobby, because some of them are going to find out that they legitimately enjoy it. The ones who don't actually care will move on in a couple months, the ones who do have opened a whole new closet full of opportunities. Getting upset about it seems like a weirdly hipster "I liked it first" brand of hatred.
>>
For those that do skate regularly how hard is it to just skate simply? No jumps or anything, I just don't want to fall on my ass. I used to rollerblade daily so I know to lace up super tight and walk/move pretty well on balance challenging boots and we've got a roller rink here I could brush up my skills at before traveling the hour to an ice rink but I'd like to go just to try it out even if I don't take the opportunity to do cosplay photos.
>>
>>9291002
If you can inline roller blade, you can skate forwards in a line without falling over. I'm practically in the same boat, I used to rollerblade all the time but I hadn't really skated much before. I went skating last week and it only took me a few minutes skating while holding a friend's hand to find my balance.

I don't really know if I'm doing it correctly or anything, but I didn't fall down and I could turn and move pretty easily.
>>
>>9291002
Go to a free skate and make sure your skates are well fitted and laced and after a few laps around the rink grabbing the sides you'll probably be good.
>>
>>9291006
>>9291012

As long as they're not crashing freestyle sessions (how would someone even manage that?), I don't see what the problem is? If you're going on the ice during public sessions you're accepting that there are gonna be people, cosplayers or not, who don't know jack shit about skating on the ice.

>>9290984
>but we're all having fun
Fun, during a recreational activity, what a novel concept!

But seriously, this sounds cute. As long as everyone's practicing good etiquette and being as safe as they can manage, there shouldn't be an issue with groups like this.

>>9291002
>I just don't want to fall on my ass
Don't be too afraid of this, honestly. It's gonna happen. Learn to fall safely, remember to keep your fingers tucked in so there's no risk of someone skating over them.
>>
>>9290984
Yeah but if you're being a hipster and going vegan or eating avocado bun burgers, you're probably not going to hurt others. If you don't know how to skate or bother learning how to do it safely you can hurt other people too

I'd be so mad if some weeb took me out (or injured me) at a meet by being a fucknut on the ice. I've been skating competitively for 20 years but nothing can protect against stupid
>>

>>

Genuine question, do you know of a handy reference sheet of rink etiquette and safety that could easily be spread on twitter or facebook? It would require people actually read it, but if it got turned into a slideshow-style thing tumblr might eat that shit up
>>
>>9291110
>implying free skates aren't literally always populated with clueless people trying out skating for the first time
just admit you've got salt in your vag and move on
>>
>>9291118
Lol I never said I wasn't salty
But people at free skates usually have more sense than to try spins and jumps when they can hardly stand up straight

I'm not against people falling down or not being able to skate, this is all directed at people not being spacially aware/careful/common sense and slicing me (or someone else) with their blades
>>
>>9291121
I have yet to see a Weeb on Ice attempt a spin or jump. I think the most complicated thing I've witnessed was someone, after a few sessions, trying to learn how to skate backwards with the help of a more experience friend. I think you're chasing geese.
>>
>>9291114
There's always guidelines on the walls at rinks, like no legs above your head because the blades can hurt someone, generally no jumps/spins on a public session (unless they're actual figure skaters associated with the rink), and often theres unofficial rules against standing in one place chatting with your friends because you get in the way of the other skaters

>>9291002
Thats actually a pretty perfect base to begin with, but unlike other anon's advice I wouldn't hold onto the boards. it throws you off balance. like keep close to them by all means but try not to hold onto them. also you really aren't likely to get your fingers cut off contrary to popular belief, a lot of skates are too blunt especially rentals.

>>9291107
I'm just worried about weebs putting people in danger or hurting themselves just because they're trying to be like their anime boyfriends. factory sharpened blades, loose skates and them trying jumps/spins/flexible things sound like a disaster to me.
.
>>
>>9291125
You'd be surprised, someone in my comm tried it and hurt their wrist when they fell. Luckily they didn't hurt anyone else.

>>
>>9291002
I was in the same boat as you, went for the first time yesterday (And really enjoyed myself! I'm considering signing up for beginner lessons because even though i'm too old to compete, I was a dancer for a long time and I really like the way that skating feels and looks, I need to get off my ass and do something or I'm going to go crazy) and it's... the pushing motion is a little different from roller blading, but I got a feel for it in just a few minutes, maybe two or three laps around the rink, and I could balance on one skate pretty much as soon as i got used to the feeling of the ice.

The only issue I had was, I could tell that the blades on the rental skates were really dull. I might buy my own pair, since there's a place nearby that I can go to frequently, that isn't very expensive.

It's also considerably harder to push and keep up speed than skates, which is... not what I expected desu. I definitely put a lot more effort into moving on ice than on wheels.
>>
>>9291213
Thank you so much for the account! I never would have thought it would be harder to move on skates since natural ice is so slippery. I'm excited to try this out now next time I'm nearby a rink on a weekend
>>
>>9291227
Yeah, it was really surprising to me. i guess part of that could have been the dull blades tho. I was really out of breath when i finished though.
>>
>>9291249
As someone who doesn't have roller blades but did recently switch from rentals to a personal pair with freshly sharpened blades, the difference in speed is pretty noticeable. I wasn't putting in as much effort to move as I had been the first few times I went. It was a problem because I got cold more easily than I'm used to...
>>

A lot of people suggest the Jackson Mystiques as a good starter skate, steer clear of anything less than £50 as a rule (soz 4 gbp) because the ankles will be too soft. Best thing to do though is go to a shop and get fitted, if there aren't any dedicated stores near you then rinks usually have a little one with a smaller variety of stuff to try on.

Literally no one here is shitting on new skaters? The only concern we have is people skating without common sense and putting themselves and others at risk
>>
>>9291761
Like >>9291787 is saying, those of us here who do have any actual skating experience think that safety is a big issue potentially, to not just yourself but to others. Ice skates can be dangerous, and it's easily possible to break limbs, deal serious cuts etc through incorrect use. Yuri on Ice as a series uses a lot of actual skating background research, so the info is available to produce high level cosplays. However, producing cosplayys of the characters in skates just isn't feasible to do in a convention setting, and even in a photo shoot setting it could be risky fir the aforementioned reasons. Thus the suggestions for safer alternatives, which can also prevent damage to buildings as well as the skates or oneself. In Princess Tutu cosplays the potential risk for non pointe dancers is limited to oneself, whereas there are a lot more risks in YOI cosplays to take into consideration once skates are brought into consideration. Any of the complaints regarding costumes comes from skating costumes having particular characteristics to them. They're ironically one of the few times were fabrics such as Lycra etc, are actually used abundantly.

Does anyone know what sort of fabric the main bodice would be made of? It has sparkles, but the sequins aren't distinct. I was at a con yesterday and saw a yuri on ice yuri with a Victor.

They had this pose planned where Yuri would lift one of his legs like a ballerina and Victor would hold him like he was helping or something. Yuri buys it as a good luck charm, not an engagement ring and they never fucking "promise" to get married, Viktor makes a joke about it since everyone assumed and Yuri was too embarrassed to keep trying.

They never actually promised anything or said they love each other, or did you not watch it?

I guess we have to spell it out for some people.

This is directly from the crators twitter. The drama theyre talking about in their post is a drama airing in japan right now and the main characters just had their first kiss the same week the yoi mains kissed.
>>
>>9293840
Love is expressed very differently in different countries. In japan, a guy could express a marriage propsal simply by showing his interest a picture of a wedding dress and say "would you wear this for me", and its basically a proposal. In high schools in japan, carrying someones books or bag could be their way of saying "i love you a lot". The japanese just domt express their feelings the same way other cultures do, and its the same in anime.
>>
>>9293855
>>9293859
They still arent actually in a relationship though.

Just because its implied they are gay doesnt mean they are automatically dating.

You can kiss a lot of people without dating them.

Whether or not culture is different you can not tell me a boy holding a girls books mean they are in a relationship unless they say they are in one. You cant just force people into a relationship because they act a certain way.

All they have done so far is heavily bait it.
>>
>>9293866
I don't know what you want for it to be canon. Do they need to have explicit sex on screen or explicitly exchange "I love you"s to each other's faces? Even if many malexfemale romances don't even do that.

You seem to be projecting your low-context western culture onto the show, which was made for and by a high-context culture. A boy holding a girl's books could very well mean they are in a relationship, even if they don't verbally say it. It's like you're saying that even if a couple has been living together for 7 years, because they are not legally married they aren't husband and wife. Actions speak louder than words.

If you want to call anything bait, it was Yuuko and Yuuri in the first episode.
>>
>>9293846
It says marriage rings on the receipt. I'm sure friends don't kiss either (it was an offscreen kiss, but Kubo's tweets practically confirm the action). There's enough support for me to say it's not just bait. Their feelings for each other aren't platonic.

honestly, I think there's enough evidence for you to say that Viktor might be interested in Yuuri, but Yuuri only ever proactively expresses interest before/during his Eros performance, which is easily explained as him 'getting into character' to give a good performance of the piece's theme. That aside, everything else is vague queerbaity fujoshit. And honestly, I think that's fine. There's so much more that makes this series a really good ensemble show that it doesn't need the fujobait/ "omg totally legit realistic gay couple!!!!" to make it good.

Yeah, I agree on your last point. I mean, I was prepared for it to be super bait-y and would have watched it anyway because I like skating. The skating part is super well done and researched. But to say that there's no canon romantic narrative between the main characters just shows extreme skepticism or willed blindness. It's not blatant like many want it to be, but it's definitely very different than Free's version of homo (which is true bait). Yuuri isn't very proactive in general, not just in his romantic life. For me, the fact that he buy Viktor very expensive rings (that says wedding on the receipt?) is an affirmation of his interest, and also what marks his past actions as genuine and not just "getting into character".
>>

The vendor said a plush went missing, accusations of stealing goes flying around, yada yada drama. It's not even remotely related to Yuri!!! on Ice apart from coincidence that they're cosplaying the show.

Can you imagine two 17yo dating each other and the second that one turn 18, it's pedophilia? How do these people even survive in the world.
>>
>>9294005
Yes, he does buy him the rings, but he also explains his intention behind them explicitly to Viktor. It's not for a romantic reason (I'm not arguing that the two don't share a strong bond at all ofc, just the romantic nature of it), and if it had been, Yuuri's explanation would have said it explicitly. I personally think it's really important for this bond not to be read as romantic, as the theme of the series seems to be highlighting all the different ways a person can give and receive love. To simplify the label of the relationship as "romantic" cheapens it and takes away from other facets of the relationship as a whole.

Also, unfortunately, by using an "if you don't see it as canon, you're buying your head in the sand" argument, you just sound like any other fujoshi trying to argue their 'canon' ship. And that, at least, is no different than Free. (I do, however, agree with you that YoI's type of bait is a lot better than Free's, at least in its frequency of reliance on fanservice.)

His words declare it just to be a good luck charm, but the context of the church bells and ring finger is undoubtedly romantic. And like I said, actions speak louder than words- especially in a high-context culture.

The theme is different types of love, yes, but not necessarily different types of love from one person (seeing as Yuuri's relationship with his parents is just parental love, for example). And I don't think them having a romantic bond cheapens it at all, because them having a romantic bond doesn't subtract from their professional bond or other emotional bonds. It's not a zero sum game.

I can't see it as anything but sand-burying if people keep moving their goal posts. That's why I asked what would make you believe it was canon. All the events so far go beyond the usual criteria for a romantic relationship (the sexual energy, the kiss, the ring exchange). If you're defining a canon romance as sex on the beach then of course, sure, it's not canon. But for me, canon is when the creators allow the a kiss to happen without denying it, where the other characters in the story genuinely support a marriage without treating it like a joke.

I'd believe it was canon if Yuuri ever showed sexual interest in Viktor outside of the Eros costume. Without sexual interest, or invitations to intimacy, the bond is a sterile one. Viktor does this, so we know that at least on his end, he is interested in Yuuri. What we don't see is Yuuri doing any of the same, so I can't say that they're a couple if only one character is clearly interested in being so.

tbqh, the imagery of the church bells and ring finger stuff really felt like fanservice for its own sake instead of an act of visual implication. Its only purpose is to excite fujoshis and give them something to cling to to keep them watching.

Yes, they were allowed a kiss, which again, only really supported Viktor's interest, not so much a mutual attraction, and allowing the other characters to support the potential relationship really says more about those characters (and/or the writers) than the actual characters in the potential couple. Relying on those to declare a ship 'canon' is really flimsy.
>>
>>9294145
to clarify what I mean by "a sterile bond" : I mean this from Yuuri's end of the relationship specifically.
>>
>>9294145
Bruh you can have a romantic relationship without having sexual interest.
>>
>>9294156
You can also have a deep, caring, loving relationship that isn't romantic.

>Its only purpose is to excite fujoshis
I'm not sure what makes you say this. Sure, it pleases the fans, but why would that mean it's not a valid implication?

It seems most of your argument is pinned on Yuuri not displaying any attraction towards Viktor, but I don't think that's the case. Most of his reactions read to me as more undecided or shy than uninterested. Perhaps Yuuri didn't have romantic feelings for Viktor in the beginning, but somewhere along their training, possibly by the time he made the declaration of his skating theme, Yuuri did start to feel something more for Viktor. Sure, Viktor initiated the kiss, but that scene also showed Yuuri's interest since he accepted it. It's not just Viktor who ran at the airport, but they both did.

For me, canon relies on context and not content. The characters can strip naked and declare undying love for each other, and it would still be bait-y if the context is treating it as as joke.
>>
Can you faggots actually discuss cosplay please? This isn't /a/

>>9294182

>>
>>9294191
I see what you're saying, re context not content, but I disagree with you, personally. I think context helps direct the content, but the content is the bulk of what can actually be objectively referenced to. Everything else is just interpreting the context, which I think we're doing differently as evidenced by
>Most of his reactions read to me as more undecided or shy than uninterested.
I personally don't see it that way, but I can see how someone would.

>I'm not sure what makes you say this. Sure, it pleases the fans, but why would that mean it's not a valid implication?
because >The characters can strip naked and declare undying love for each other, and it would still be bait-y if the context is treating it as as joke.
Now, that's not to say the context treated it like a joke specifically in that particular scene, but it did come off to me as being eyerollingly fanservicey.

I suppose it boils down to interpretation of Yuuri's actions and reactions. At the very least, it's not any kind of denial or what have you.
>>
>>9294197
I thought it was Yuuri, but I think you're right. The eyebrows look like they were sharpied in just why.

>>9294199
I can see why you were classify Yuuri's actions as non-romantic too. Yeah, I guess the difference between our interpretation lies in the romantic cues we've experienced/been socialized to.

The church scene was over the top, yes. But multiple non-romantic scenes do that too (like Chris' skate) so while I laughed at the corniness, I didn't see it as fanservicey, just dramatic. But I see where you're coming from.

What material would be good for the bulk of th Eros costume? I was looking at dance-quality spandex, since it's essentially a dance costume, but I wasn't sure if men's figure skating costumes tend to be made of different materials than women's?

I picked out a variety of fabrics to actually go and have a look at, but is there anything in particular I should keep my eye out for?
>>
>>9294016
And for some reason they think Yurio is American where he has to be 18. He's 15 now, his birthday is in March and legal age in Russia is 16.
Not to mention it's not as if he's getting close to some old man, Otabek is 18 which is only a 2/2 and a half-year gap.
These same bandwagon fans probably came from Homestuck and had no issues with those ships, I'm sure.

And back on the topic of cosplay, who else expects some truly awful fanservice? I already know one girl that's been posted here is excited to use her cosplay to try and grope some Viktors.

Okay but that... doesn't tell me what kind of fabric that actually is.

I have seen that picture before, but I can't read moonrunes, and as far as I've seen, nobody has mentioned the type of fabric?

They have shimmery stuff like that in a bunch of different materials. As I said in my post, I assume it's some kind of dance-quality spandex blend, but this photo doesn't give any extra information to me.
>>
>>9294315
The majority of the eros costume is black, dumb fuck. Just use black spandex.
>>
>>9294497

Not the shopper but dude spandex comes in different weights, two different kinds of stretches, different spandex % content and several different fabric finishes.

"Just black spandex" doesn't cut it.

Then they can fucking choose themselves, how hard is that? Just use black spandex does cut it, use some fucking common sense and get the black spandex you feel is right.
>>
>>9294315
If you want full accuracy, the majority of the costume is made of velour (ベロア). The other parts are made of mesh, anons specifically recommended power mesh. Make sure to use stretch fabrics made for dance/sports/gymnastics/whatever so you can actually move in your costume.

> Yuuri ever showed sexual interest in Viktor outside of the Eros costume
Like this...? He's clearly attracted to him, and that's ignoring all his romantic interest. You can't separate the skating and their relationship in the first place, the programs are meta narratives symbolic of their real relationship dynamic.

Don't get me wrong, we are definitely being baited, but it's not specifically 'fujobaiting'. It's standard relationship teasing that you can find in many hetero shoujo, romcom, harem etc series. They aren't confirming an official couple because they want to milk the audience for longer, and that requires sustained romantic tension/drama, it really has nothing to do with avoiding making them gay. They are already blatantly gay.
>>
>>9297108
That kind of "baiting" is called blueballing. Baiting is when something is offered but then switched with another thing.

I teach skating as I've been skating all my life and the way we teach it is to"cha-cha" (it's mostly little kids so the wording isn't that great) meaning kind of step up and down on the ice, from that you learn to push off more and glide. For God's sake DON'T hold onto the wall, you're not going to learn that way and I've seen a lot of people fall because they cling onto it so much. You're going to fall but put your hands out in front and work on balance. Lace your skates up right, that's a huge part of skating. Don't be afraid to fall, you have to make mistakes to learn :)
