I am interested in starting a clothing brand. It will be based in California. What are the things I should know and things that I will need?

Good luck. Californians are some trendy motherfuckers. I should know because I live here.

if you know so little that autists on /biz/ could teach you about fashion, you're bound to fail

What's your target market?
>Teen Males
This brand should revolve around skateboarding and hip/hop culture. That means lots of brand endorsements, sponsorships, and EXCLUSIVITY. Look at Supreme, Diamond Supply Co., Palace, Bape, Pink Dolphin, etc.
>Teen Females
You. Will. Fail. Girls want foreign big brands. Tip: Instagram Sponsorships. A LOT OF THEM.
>Adult Males
Depends on what age group/class. Most men just wear whatever their wife buys them. Upper class likes European.
>Adult Females
Similar to above... But more complex.
>Children
They wear what their parents buy them at Macy's.
What do I recommend? Don't do it unless you got a lot of connections or you can start a real avant-garde movement that really grabs attention.

not really
Make some mandresses. They seem popular over there.
Making clothes is like making art. Think about who you're producing for, how they think, what YOU wear, and how YOU think. How will they feel when they see it in a store? What kind of store? What about seeing it on someone else? In a commercial? What's your audience?
Tl;dr, why buy your clothes and not someone else's?
