New investors who have never owned BTC and aren't putting old BTC holdings into ETH think purely in a USD/BTC -> BTC/ETH converted pair.
They buy their BTC with USD and then immediately trade it for ETH and all they care about is the price they bought the BTC at and the price ETH was when they traded BTC to ETH.

I am an Australian living and working in China right now, and I can confirm the following:

1. Yes China is on holiday until today, so if there's a recent reason to have become hyped, China would pick it up starting this weekend.

2. The most recent Ethereum news on the Chinese internet was from November 2015.

3. There is no Ethereum discussion amongst Chinese trading communities/web cliques that I could find.

4. They had one exchange that opened up to it but their cold storage was 'hacked' ie. stolen by an inside man and then the news was obfuscated into oblivion. Classic China.

5. I signed up with Kraken without a problem, though when I had to use a VPN to solve the Captcha because it's currently blocked by the GFC (Great Firewall of China).

As for me I'm waiting for the right price today to drop a few grand into Eth and see if the Chinese do pick it up. If even a few shills or enthusiasts (among the millions) go for it, it's a win.
