spreading cash savings between some banks can protect you - in the UK you're insured for a certain amount per banking group so splitting your cash gives you a greater portion of cash deposits that are insured (if you keep that much in cash anyway)

instead of cash gold coins might be useful if banks collapse - you'll pay 3-4% though above the spot price unfortunately... in the UK if you buy sovereigns they're exempt from sales tax and capital gains tax as they're legal tender
