On a similar note, one encounter really fucked me up.

I met a guy who was really wealthy, all due to his parents. He went to a private boarding school where very semester cost $600000 every semester, and it was a private high school. The workload was massive though and he was really, really well educated. Not just about the usual academic things, but also general life-education.

He already owned 2 cars. Not even cheap ones, the ones that are worth more than what most people earn in 30 years.

His parents owned a very low-work-intensity company. They had basically fully automated it, so when he was home they had a lot of time for him.

He talked about how much people at his school were pretty much set for life, either inheriting so much money they would never have to work, or a company that is extremely profitable.

It fucked me up because, in pretty much every playing field, he was better off. He had more money to start with, a guaranteed much better job, more intelligent and hardworking. The list goes on. All because he won the birth lottery.

I'm not lazy myself, I'm pretty hardworking, but the problem is, I have almost nothing to start on. I'll have to dedicate my entire life for a chance of the wealth he had since day 1.

It made me feel worse about being in the upper middle class.

This guy's family has "fuck you" wealth. His parents probably make 8 figures per year. When you think about it, $10MM/year isn't much different from $1,000,000/year (just no private jets), which you can definitely achieve before age 30.

It's demotivating to know that he was bred for success and there's a 99.99% chance he'll end life with a higher networth than you, but I'd say it's more satisfying to be the father that started the legacy of elite humans.

This is exactly my experience of being at the Grand Canyon. I'm there with around 100 people, enjoying one of the greatest natural sights our country has to offer. Probably about half of us will only be there this once. Only for the 10 or 15 minutes we stop at this spot.

And instead of taking in the experience, they're just sitting there snapping pictures?

Personally I find it a bit distasteful (and don't partake in that stuff myself) but if you were raised in the sure knowledge you had more money than you could ever waste on champagne and coke, it probably fucks a bit with your values.
I think flaunting your wealth isn't a good idea, though, it inspires envy (or possibly ambition, if we stay positive) at best and hatred at worst.
