read the article about LTCM going down by michael lewis, talks a bit about how he got out of solomon brothers because all he cares about is his reputation, for the same reasons he stepped in when LTCM was floundering and looked like a hero but was just making a shit ton of money, did the same thing with GS during the financial crisis. hes a completely ego-driven psychopath just like you'd expect, just really got at hiding it and staying modest. still a genius tho

he seems basically like every old rich dude. His redeeming quality is his honesty about his rise to riches, and the fact he donates a lot of money. That being said often they are to 'for profit' stakeholder driven 'charities'... So maybe a large minority of his donations are truly altruistic.

spreading wealth is the best way to improving the economy, and profits generally do not spread wealth in any way. Stakeholders don't get equity in the company without dividends and stockprices are in no way indicative of a companies' market value/ profit margin, other business metrics.
