I just invested in an index fund a few weeks ago and of course now it's down. The indices always go up overtime though right? If I stick it out I'll end up making a good rate of return? Especially if I put X dollars into the fund each month?

Yes. Was it the dow?
Don't even check it..maybe once a month. Put it away. Have faith and work hard.

I hope you fully intend to hold these for decades.
Read: Decades
The theory goes, that over multiple decades the market always goes up. However, if your investing horizon is too short, your entry point can make or break you.

It's a Vanguard fund that pretty much follows the dow. I figure if the world economy comes to a complete downfall I'll have much bigger things to rworry about than my fund anyways.
You have no idea if it will go up or go down.
It might go up but you will have been lucky. Then you will post on boards like this telling people to do what you did.
It might go down. And then you won't post on boards like this.
I put a 8 thousand dollars in a IRA 2 years ago and now it's down over 1.3k. Don't even look anymore.

aren't you scared though?

Nah, It'll go back up before I can take it out without penalty. (Aka 36 fucking years)
I'm not worried.

With the time value of money factored in, you're fucked either way friend.
The purpose investing is to beat the time value of money.

>The indices always go up overtime though right?

Go check out the Nikkei and how Japan has been doing the last 30 years

History says yes.
