I just had an odd obsession with/attraction to violence involving women from a young age that is completely separate from my normal interactions with people outside of private fantasies and self-gratification.

As for the movie, it seems to me it's just a "shock porn" type of film. The type that garners attention/reverence from mostly teenagers and young adults and maintains a sort of cult notoriety.

When I was in my mid-late teens the Faces of Death series held a similar spot. No one other than people my age really gave any shits about the films.

I do think that this type of "shock porn" satisfies many people's truly morbid and innate curiosity. Especially the real stuff. Which is why there is such a large yet taboo market for it that no one ever talks about it. There are hundreds of websites that deal exclusively with this sort of thing (the YNC, kaotic, humoron, etc etc) that gets millions of hits a day.

You may contest that its all societies fault for making people this way and desensitizing them to it/causing them to seek it out.
I would argue that curiosity and at least some form of attraction to this sort of thing are intrinsically human. I think society is what "taboos away" that curiosity and makes people think it is scary/reprehensible/disgusting.

I would cite things like the High Place Phenomenon as contributing/causative/related factors for for this innate curiosity of the morbid and violent. I also think this plays heavily into the idea of moral relativism and the idea that society shapes and inflicts morals on people. Without society, the need to fit into it to survive, and the 'nurture' of being raised to conform to societal standards; people would be violent and morbid beings if left to 'nature'.
