Let's try this again /b/. Recommend the best horror movies and games you know of. Make sure they're scary as fuck. Games have to be on PC and I really prefer that the movies be in English too cuz subtitles really kill a horror movie for me.

Yes, except it wasn't junk. It just wasn't a jump-scare horror film that Hollywood typically churns out.

Understood. A lot of people dislike or can't keep up with subtitles. I have to admit with some Japanese films, I've had to back up and use Pause to catch all of the dialog. I have my speed limit, too.

Yes to the French "The Martyrs."

Also, the scariest movie I've ever seen is "Audition (1999)." I HIGHLY recommend it. It's a slow build; I wasn't even sure I was watching a horror movie at first, but keep watching.
>>
>>736161313

That was very decent. Surprisingly good. Though I wasn't too huge on the direction it took near the end.

Decent body horror film that uses puppets, just like The Thing.

>>
>>736161356

I mean, my father had it on VHS and I kinda grew up on those films. So it's only logical that my mind went there first given mask, disfigured child, revenge, serial killing, that OP described.

Call it nostalgia if you will.
>>
>>736161548
It ran about 80 minutes too long...
>>
>>736159383
The horror involved is more about the characters than the ghost.

Spoilers, kind of: Not that the characters are turned against each other or unable to trust each other but rather that they've got this huge morbid weight hanging over them at all times and it wears at them psychologically little by little. The only way to save someone is to sacrifice someone else, and even then it's only temporary. At the end of the day they will all eventually die.

>>
>>736161821

Agreed. I love me some John Carpenter films. Prince of Darkness still gets under my skin after seeing it 20+ times.
>>
Also, if you haven't seen any of the "classics," do it:

Psycho
Carrie
The Shining
Halloween
Alien
Silence of the Lambs
Frankenstein
Rosemary's Baby
Cannibal Holocaust
Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
The Exorcist
28 Days Later
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Return of the Living Dead

There's a reason they're considered some of the best ever.
>>
>>736161928

IIRC from a Night of the Living Dead documentary, horror films back then were actually intended to be family friendly and the type of films that kids could go see. That's why NOTLD was so controversial. It wasn't family friendly.

So the cheese factor could be due to it being family friendly.
>>
>>736161951

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS IS NOT HORROR!!!!!!!!

It really isn't, though...
>>
Anything that tries to be scary or is supposed to be "scary" can get the fuck out right now because it isn't. Fucking bitch at me, I don't give a shit. Wish I never wasted time on any of these shitty recommendations you ill-advised faggots try to project on everyone. True horror is waking up every day, turning on the news, and seeing the daily, unimaginative Trump humor.
>>
>>736162208

I really beg to differ. People talk about "unfilmable" novels - if they exist, then I think Eraserhead is an "unwritable" film. It is an expression of surreal horror that absolutely needs a large screen, a clear speaker, and a dark room to properly experience. You could describe it as pure film, especially if you accepted the use of sound in that descriptor ("pure film" is really about images alone). I'm not claustrophobic but I think that Eraserhead gets as close to evoking that feeling as any film (Pi is another great example of that). The pace is steady, slow but unrelenting. You know you're unlikely to see anything truly shocking or gory but you're constantly uncomfortable about what you will see next.

My favorite thing about Eraserhead is that you could describe everything that happens in the movie in precise, specific detail to someone and they would still be shocked and confused when they actually watch it. Eraserhead is the best recreation of nightmares that I've ever seen in a movie. The crazy imagery might seem strange and otherworldly, but they're all rooted in actual fears and anxieties. Henry's social awkwardness and the people he interacts with (such as Mary's mother and father) are just real world scenarios filtered through dream logic (or un-logic, as the case may be). It's such an interesting psychological portrait of the protagonist (and maybe Lynch, if Henry is a bit of a surrogate) that expertly uses sensory details to sell its strange world.

It's irreplicable, a vision and work of art that was under complete control of it's artist. I think it's one of the greatest examples of the auteur theory. That being said, it's not what makes it a masterpiece it is. It's a cliche to say but for me, it just a completely indescribable experience. Everything about the technical aspect of cinema from cinematography to sound design to set pieces all are used to create such an experience. It's not a film to "get" but a film to "get into".
>>
>>736162298
54! Well I'll eat my hat. I remember his Master's of Horror episode, probably the best of the series, now that I think about it...

Well I for one have transitioned from watching Hollywood horror movies to Korean horror movies after watching most of Hollywood's horror movies. Let me tell ya, you'd be surprised how good Korean movies are. I'll recommend you some horror ones if any of you guys are interested:

1- Voice of a Murderer

Based on a true story; The only son of famous news anchor Han Kyung-bae disappears without a trace. The kidnapper calls the nine-year-old boy's mother, Oh Ji-sun, demanding 100,000 dollars as ransom.

NOTE: A recording of the real call the kidnapper had with the reporter (the child's father) can be heard at the end of the movie.

2- The Wailing

A Japanese man has recently arrived at a little village in the mountains of South Korea, living in a secluded house. A mysterious disease starts spreading among the villagers, causing a rash which precedes violent murderous outbreaks followed by stupor and eventually death.

3- Oldboy

Dae-Su is an obnoxious drunk bailed from the police station yet again by a friend. However, he's abducted from the street and wakes up in a cell, where he remains for the next 15 years, drugged unconscious when human contact is unavoidable, otherwise with only the television as company.

NOTE: Do NOT watch the Hollywood version of this. It's terrible compared to this.
>>
>>736163787

>>736158085
I still don't understand what's so great about this movie. I just felt this as a totally normal movie. Didn't get scared.
>>
>>736163786

>>
>>736164061

Never seen The League so I think that helped.

To be honest, it was an actually realistic found footage film, which is what separates the shit from the good.

Spooky ghost? Nah.

Studying the habits of tribes in the middle or nowhere, or taking a job to make a film for a dying man's son? Realistic and convincing, which is what made them good.
>>
>>736164027
I think that it's detractors would say that its getting to that last ten minutes that is the problem. That said, it's still better than 99% of American horror over the past twenty or thirty years...

Great movie. I dread watching the new remake.
>>
>>736165095
My recommendation would be start at Season3Ep4 titled shut up and dance.

It's an anthology TV show meaning every episode is self contained and doesn't follow an overarching story.

I usually recommend people don't str at season 1 ep 1 because it's a type of horror that makes you feel gross and may make not want to watch the other episodes.

Go back to it if you feel ballsy lol

As a King fan and collector of his novels, I loved the film and hate what's going on with the show. But not as much as what they're doing to The Dark Tower film.

At least the Mist show fits into the Canon while Dark tower took the Canon and shit on it.

The Descent didn't work for me either. Not sure why.

Re-Animator is overrated. A few minor laughs. Terrible score.
>>
>>736165401

The concept was good. Creature designs good.

Actresses and actions of them? Not good.

>>736165419

Good film that was faithful to the book aside from some small changes. For example, in the book she cuts his foot off with an axe and cauterizes it with a blowtorch. Movie, she uses a sledgehammer and breaks his ankles.

And they're using the ending as an excuse for the change. No, he's the same fucking person. White, blue eyes and looks like Clint Eastwood. Not to mention how it will affect the Odetta/Detta arc.

I don't collect his novels for nothing. Been waiting for this movie since Wastelands. Now they've made it into a piece of PC garbage. I'd prefer no movie at this point.

Not to mention how they're taking elements from every book to fill run time while also fucking up the chain of events. Like removing Jakes death and throwing his straight through the house removes the aspect that Roland sacrifices others for getting to the tower. It's a big fucking part of who he is.

I'm going to go see it anyways, just so I can have my opinion validated. But probably gonna torrent it. Not giving them my cash for the garbage.

>I loved the film

The part of The Mist that really rattled me was towards the end when everybody was in the car/truck and there where thunderous stepping sounds approaching. Had my subwoofer turned on which just made it more unsettling.
>>
>>736166028
You and me both brother. You've got it figured out too. Any movie that I disagree with on principle like Get Out or game like the new mass effect I'll download and then seed until fucking forever on my seedbox to make sure I pull every dollar I can out of those kike pockets.
>>
>>736166060

Yep. Major improvement on the novellas ending where we don't know what happened to the group. It's left ambiguous for the reader to decide.

I liked having a solid answer in the film.
>>
>>736165698
>Jesus Camp

I really don't want to watch this movie but realize I need to. I know how pissed off I'm going to get.
>>
>>736165857
>event horizon

I just don't see the attraction of this film. It was just a boring trope mashup.
>>
>>736166242

Agreed. I'll probably go see IT. Looks like an actually faithful adaptation of the book aside from the time period change. Which IMO is necessary. Gives options for more common horror icons as opposed to Swamp Thing like in the book.

Plus allows for them to base the sequel in 2017/18
>>
>>736166422
It's like pussy. You don't get it. Doesn't mean it isn't great.

It was more the aspect of them being stuck in space it was different but i like the eerie suspensful vibe when the whole ship was taking over after shifting dimensions and shit.

Did you vomit into a bucket due to it's crapulence?
>>
>>736166589

In my (unpopular) opinion, Tim Curry didn't do a good job. He was too cheesy, goofy to pull off Bob Gray.

The purpose of the clown isn't to be funny, but to attract dumb kids like Georgie and switch instantly to salt the meat efficiently.

The Losers saw through it, and he was forced to take other forms, and therefore when he was a clown, he wasn't funny, but more so horrifying.

Guess it's also the fault of the writers of the script as well.
>>
>>736166729
I would give my left nut to be able to see the directors cut that doesn't exist. The torture set was supposed to be more than 10 minutes long. Test audiences were puking and passing out.

>>736166729

I do agree that it was a very well made movie. It's just that when I was watching it I was constantly saying to myself "Oh, I've seen this before". This works okay in some movies but it didn't work with me for Event Horizon. I understand why people may like it, I'm just not one of those people.
>>
>>736167286

Was a good novel and did show the effects of alcoholism on a man well. Also managed to finish the torrance legacy well IMO.
