I think I have an idea of why people act like this. Lack of skill / hobby. I've never met a single person act like they belong on tumblr who has gone out of their way to make an effort to learn something new. Whether it's a musical instrument, a new language, or even something as simple as learning how the nitty-gritty bits of science*.

The only thing they know how to do is sit on a couch and watch television, or read a book, sometimes they even go to college. Hell, even if they do, they're bombarded with messages telling them to instantly go find someone else, someone in "power" to fix it for them. But slowly, as they regurgitate the same bland drivel that gets them so much "attention"(read: people on the internet looking at your post for 5 seconds and then moving on to something about cats), they start to truly believe it.
