Learning piano keyboard for beginners thread.

I received a piano for christmas and wanted to learn for some time.
What is the best way to start learning?
What has worked for you?

Any information would be helpful.

I usually don't player longer than the time it takes for me to go poo

Do scales. This is for the patient learner who wants to learn the basics. I know people who want to jump immediately into popular songs to jam to but that's just sad. If you lean scales, arpeggios, and learn how to sight read, you can play anything you want. How good you play it depends on how much practise you put in a day.

I first started learning by having a tutor. I was 11 at the time so I don't remember much, all I remember was scales and basic basic songs. We had a book where it gave you melodies and exercises to play with your right hand. Then your left. Then it combined them together.

Shape notes? I've done 4 years theory and I have no idea what you mean by shape notes

I like the piano
>>
honestly i think the most important thing is to learn the mnemonics so that you know where the keys are located.
>>
>>588431437
sorry I meant musical notes.
So I am assuming things like "Twinkle twinkle little star" things like this?
>>
>>588431437

op you still here? I'd recommend getting a teacher. Either have the teacher go to your place to teach or go to the teacher's place. It might be expensive but it's worth it. They offer a lot of things a self taught piano teacher can't.
>>588429660
>>
>>588431878
Exactly. Start with twinkle twinkle little star, then work your way up to something more sexy

I am curious to hire a teacher. I would love to splurge for the lessons but I know I will just not feel too comfortable learning with a person in the room.
I do best working alone. Is it at all possible to learn by listening and repeating?

I mean scales. You know scales? Start by learning the c major scale. Easiest thing to play imo.

Yes, that's easy.
>>
>>588432849
>You know scales?
Yes, I'm not a potato
>>
>>588432513

Main problem is you'll have no way of knowing if your technique is shit. There are a lot of things you need to do to be able to play piano well involving your fingers, wrist, arms, back, all kinds of shit.

Of course if you're planning on just playing chords then this won't matter much. In that case just get a chord progression wheel and start messing around
>>
>>588432924
Next learn the blues scales
>>
>>588433129
I want to learn tight riffs mange
>>
>>588432175
Egypt? In egypt I will have no idea. Search your local newspaper or something. The price really comes down to the teacher. He or she will make up the price generally and the more professional she is, the higher the rate (of course). My last teacher was 60$ an hour.

>>588432513
It is possible but you will be missing out on a lot. The correct posture, hand placement, the emotion during a song, how you should land on certain notes.

>>588432740
Not right now but yes, as I said, once you learn how to sight read you can play anything. It just depends on how well you can play it. I haven't learnt that one, but I can play it if time gives.
>>
>>588433758
FUCK YOU DON'T KNOW ABOT EGYPT
>>
>>588433879
hehe. I don't live in Egypt sorry, I'm an aussie
>>
>>588433326

Even as someone who took years of lessons as a kid I still don't have great technique...you can probably learn some dank ass passages in time but it will be frustrating because of the aforementioned lack of guidance on technique, not to mention someone who can tell you "That piece is too difficult for you" and save you a bunch of wasted time
>>
>>588433758
>The correct posture, hand placement, the emotion during a song, how you should land on certain notes.
I know how to do all of this. I don't need help.

>>588429660

meh, i can do anything. i'm fantastic.
>>
>>588434017

>>
>>588434152

Then go be self taught if you truly believe what you know is right.

Teachers have years of expertise and the best ones know a lot more than a self taught player.
>>
>>588434341
i'm amazing, the best that has ever lived.

pro-tip: you suck.
>>
Fuck teachers, complete waste of money, they just sit there and tell you which bits were wrong, which you'll realize everywhere.

First you need to figure out what the notation means, i.e. which note you press and how long for, this can easily be found online.

After that it's really just practice, it's that fucking simple.

Google sheet music of songs or pieces you like and practice them, getting progressively harder

Learn music theory

Buy a book. Seriously. Preferably one aimed at beginner music school students. Learning from a book for kids is surprisingly beneficial.

Ask a classical pianist anything. 17 years experience, started at age three. Currently studying performance at a top 10 music school in the United States.
>>
>>588429660
this thread is relevant to my interests. Been playing guitar for years and wanted to start reading music, so I brought a keyboard recently to help visualise and string things together in that respect.
>>
Ive finally learned myself Comptine D'un Autre Ete, do you consider that a difficult piece?
>>
>>588429660
You have to learn music theory just as you would for any instrument. This would involve learning how to stack notes for creating chords, utilizing stacatto and legatto, scale-chord relationship and manipulation, etc...

After that, you apply said theory to an instrument, in this case the piano. The standard piano has three pedals on the bottom. Can't remember what all of them do but the pedal on the far right is for sustain and I think the middle one allows for the piano to stay in a mezzopiano kind of range.
Moving on, the harder you press the keys, the louder the note. Also, the piano is made up into 7 1/3 sets of octave ranges (i.e 88 keys/notes),
>>
>>588436167
I forgot to add in as well that you've got to practice timing like you would on any instrument, so buy a metronome.
>>
>>588436077
No, but nice dubs.
>>
>>588431437
Another one who wants to learn piano here. Taking lessons is unfortunately not an option and probably wont be for quite some times due to reasons. What i am wondering is, if i where to learn by my self, i would probably go the route of learning the scales, chords, arpeggios and all the basics and the theory instead of just practicing songs. But i am wondering if there are any major set backs to learning this on my own? Will i develop some seriously bad technique thats gonna majorly fuck me over in the future etc etc? What are the pitfalls and common mistakes someone learning by them selfs will most likely encounter and so on?

And are there any recommended books to follow? There are plenty out there i just don't know which one to pick
>>
>>588435825
What's the most ridiculous 20th (or 21th) "avant-garde" piece you've ever perform?
>>
Where does one learn how to read sheets? I've only been playing off Youtube and Synthesia.
>>
>>588437183
It's easy to develop bad technique if you don't have a teacher, yes. It won't matter up to a certain point, but when you decide to start somewhat advanced music and practice more than an hour- an hour and a half a day, you have the potential to damage your tendons if you don't learn how to play the instrument correctly.

Also, method books kind of suck. It's best to just get a teacher.
>>
>>588437424
I've performed original music composed by a student whose name I won't release for my own identity purposes, but he currently attends Juilliard.

I've played a good amount of Shostakovich (cello sonatas, trios, etc) but that's not too far out there.

in terms of ridiculousness I guess the Prokofiev Toccata in d minor is the first piece that comes to mind. Look it up, it's really cool.
>>
>>588437183
Some douche thought it would be cool to throw their name on the idea and call it the,"Suzuki method", but learn by playing with others. It's good to still learn theory on your own as well so you can form your own style, but still apply and practice music with others so you and they can learn and grow.
>>
>>588438680
Suzuki method isn't bad...
>>
>>588429660
OP I literally just looked up the Synthesia video for
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiW6akLxrCM
and spent a week learning it
First time i'd ever played a piano seriously
so did that, so I could impress this gal who is good at piano but I dropped spaghetti and fucked it up...
but I'd never received lessons at all, nor did I bother learning sheet music
within 2 months I could learn and play advanced pieces like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn-M2Hb61Og#t=102
>>
>>588439426
Didn't say it was bad, just saying it's just selfish to put your name on a method that people have been doing forever.
