Ask an airline pilot anything.

Thread started yesterday by some cocky dutchfag claiming to work in china and rubbing his salary in everyones faces. This isn't one of those threads.

And by airline I mean flying an airbus a319/20/21 in europe. ex 738.
>>
can you fly my acj380 i need pilot
>>
>>584062239
I could damn well try. All these airbuses seem the same.
>>
thought I was the only one on /b/ Anyway I hope your captain was landing while you were taking this picture afterwards him slapping the shit out of you.
>>
>>584062613
not good enough, would you do the training with Airbus corp?
>>
>>584062628
Yeah I think he was. No big deal anyway to be taking a photo while the other guy is flying. Unless you're some paranoid freak who is no fun to fly with. A comment like that makes me think you might be :/
>>
>>584062075
Have you encountered any close fighter jet flybys or escorts or something?
>>
>>584062703
I'd do the training with whoever you want provided you're paying.

Actually. No. I'm quite happy in my job and where I live so I don't think I'd like to move at all. Next question.
>>
>>584062736
Just got my ATPL a few months ago, at least in my experience for now if i tried taking a picture on the final, not good.
>>
Student pilot here, I'm a university student as well. How the hell do I come up for money for my flying hours? I'm out of funds, it's expensive as shit. I want to fly more than anything

Yup. Once. 2 fighter jets on portugese/spanish border. they were working a difference frequency and flew close to use. Trigger a TCAS RA. Traffic Collision Avoidance System - Resolution Asomething. Lots of bells and noises and flashing.
Think it means about 20s or less from hitting them. Had to manouvre the aircraft so as to not descend into them. Was fine though. Had a couple of warnings since due to other aircraft climbing/descending but nothing where i went "fuck nearly died there"
>>
>>584062075

What licence and qualifications do you have?
>>
>>584062924
after you get your PPL or LAPL, get certified to tow gliders. You don't get paid for it obviously but you also don't pay for flying. If you find a competition to fly for, you can easily get 3-5 hours in a day.
>>
Are there any pilots flying drunk? Not necessarily drinking while flying but the night before so they are drunk.

And are Stewardesses bitches?
>>
>>584062920
And are you flying for a company at the moment? You read the guy you're sitting beside after a while. You start to know who will care and who won't. I would never stress about someone taking a picture beside me in most cicrumstances.
>>
>>584063038
JAA/EASA ATPL. 3800hrs or something close to that.
>>
How common is pilot suicide, REALL?
>>
Do you get to have sex with the flight attendants?
>>
>>584063087
Been flying for a company for about 2 months now, private charter. The guy I usually fly with is an old WWII veteran, quite a dick.
>>
>>584063068
Never had anyone flying drunk. Know of one guy that got send home from crew room for being too ropey after the night before. Did encounter one guy who was a bit too far gone from the night before to be flying so he let the other guy do the work. bit risky.

Some are bitches. Some are not. Generally I find in my current company people are treated better by management and are happier in general then.
>>
>>584063156

What are your usual destinations?
>>
Ever gone through minimums without visual?

Ever had to take control from PF?

Ever had to declare a mayday?
>>
>>584063191
I'm sure one could but I don't and have never tried. Have a gf outside of aviation. It's a small world in aviation so I don't like shitting where I eat.
>>
>>584063216
Well that's your issue right there :-/
>>
>>584063438
I'm usually in Europe too, pleasure sharing airspace with you brother
>>
>>584063326
I'm short haul in europe so m>>584063328
ost major cities/destinations in Europe.
>>
>>584063328
Sorry last reply fucked up. Chasing the post timer here.

1. Yes.
2. Yes. From the captain no less.
3. No. Thankfully.
>>
>>584063496
You too. Good luck with your old guy. Hope it gets easier!

An airbus a319/20/21??? Do you even fly brah? Also, the is SOME THING on the wing of this plane!
>>
>>584063509

Any thoughts on french ATC?

Ever flew in to le bourget?
>>
>>584063659
Thanks man. Next time you see a Leerjet, remember it could be a fellow /b/tard
>>
>>584063691
Picture is taken from 738 which I used to fly.
Now flying 319/320/321. So yes i do BRAH.
>>
Companies left aside, what do you prefer, the A320 series or 737? Must be quite the change from yoke to stick and different design philosophies, right?
>>
>>584063691

Dude, a type rating for an airbus A320 also works for an A319 and an A321, chill.
>>
>>584063737
Don't like french ATC. But not as bad as some. Really don't like the guys speaking french only especially in small shitty places like Carcasone etc.

Only flown into BVA and CDG in paris.
>>
Oh I researched how to become a pilot for many months, spoke to so many pilots in so many different countries, in the end I decided it just wasn't worth it.

I mean £90,000, then a license that I could do barely anything with? Getting a job in Europe is almost impossible. It was my dream from the start, since when I was a kid. Guess my parents aren't rich.

I even considered going to aviation university in Russia, but citizenship would be impossible.

How did you do it OP? Rich parents?
>>
>>584062075
>>584062075

How much money do you make a year?

Ever fuck the flight attendants?

Ever had to land the flight because of an on board emergency?
>>
>>584063848
Prefer 737 to actually fly. Far better in crosswind and for feeling of control when manually flying. Much prefer the FMS in the 737 as well.
Airbus is much nicer flight deck to sit and work though. And you can't beat that pullout tray. The ECAM is pure class when something goes wrong too.

Sorry to hear that, as I'm working to be one, but seriously you should file an ASR if a controler won't communicate in English, that's fucking serious.

Yeah I said serious twice, that's how serious I am.
>>
>>584063929
Parents helped me with some of the initial training buy I went outside of europe to do that so it cost a lot less. Probably around 45k euro. They are far from rich, just were in a position to help out at the time. Type rating for first job (737) I paid for myself via bank loan.
I know lots of guys who paid for everything with bank loans, but that was when the banks were lending.

Nowadays the cost is ridiculous. And I fear for the industry with the guys its attracting.
>>
>>584062075
How much does it cost to become a commercial airline pilot? and how long does the prosess take?
>>
>>584064242
Oh no the guys talking to use always speak english. It's the others that speak french to french guys. Destroys our situational awareness. And you can hear them using french to skip the queues in big airports for departure. gets very frustrating. but at least you're not the spanish or the italians!
>>
>>584062075
See lots of usage of thrust reversal in scandinavian airports, especially during winter when there's even small amounts of snow on the runway during landing. Is it harder to control the airplane during thrust reversal? The airplane always feels a bit more wobbly to me during that, as opposed to normal braking.
>>
I'm thinking about becoming a pilot - Pros and cons?
>>
>>584064020
65k euro including sector pay. and that's because i moved company and am at the bottom of the pay scale.

never.

had a couple of medical issues needing us to land but never diverted or had to request priority/mayday no.
>>
>>584064443
pros - great job

cons - it is literally impossible to get into unless your parents are richfag
>>
>>584064418
Well when it's icy/slippy the thrust will cause the plane to wobble and the brakes will kick in as well with the anti-skid and she will shimmy around a fair bit as it hits ice/non ice etc. Just ride it out until you slow down. And if you start veering too much you cancel the reverse until you center yourself again. You get the hang of it. But the reverse saves your ass on those runways cos at high speeds on ice the brakes aint worth shit.
>>
>>584064597
That con isn't true all the time. There's a lot more places doing cadet schemes. I highly suggest only doing that. You can get your parents to go as collateral while you borrow from the bank. But it's so hard to get a job now in europe you might as well not bother. For that reason I'd find it very hard to recommend anyone doing it. It's such a big gamble. I got really lucky.
>>
>>584064310
At the moment I think it's around 60-100k to get to the CPL-MEIR stage with an MCC. Then you're employable on a jet once you get the type rating. That's another 20-35k and if you're lucky your company covers this. Process up until type rating should take 1.5-2 years. But fuck paying all that.
>>
>>584062075
I always wondered what the approach to Stansted Looked like
>>
>>584064925
Well that was a while ago. If you know your stanners the inbound course is now 224. Thankfully I don't go near the cesspit now.
>>
>>584064760
Heh, my parents don't have a mortgage or anything, so I can't get a large loan. I live in a large expensive city, that's why.

Cadet schemes, yeah they're great but still expensive as fuck.

I've just settled for becoming a ship/cruise officer, eventually I'll become captain.
>>
>>584064382

We're supposed to follow the pilot's lead, if he talks french, so do we. I guess if it becomes a serious (fuck, again? ) problem they'll force everyone to go to English, but that will pose other problems (have you heard some french pilots talk in English? )
>>
>>584065060
Yeah I know that's the rule but it's a pity for the rest of us. I have heard them speak english but every other non-english nation had the same problem and they sorted it. ICAO levels exist for a reason.

Oh and by the way I should be saying thank you. French ATCOs have been great with the directs lately. Years with none and now loads!

No. Seen the space station a few times and some awesome shooting stars/small meteorites burn up. That's about it!

Here's the alps.
>>
>>584062075
Do you ever fly to East Midlands Airport in Bongland?
>>
>>584065215

ICAO levels exist but a) a level 4 will still have trouble outside of normal phraseology and b) quite a lot of controlers also have to deal with PPL pilots, who mostly can't speak English to save their lives.

Do you mean that in the rest of europe, English is mandatory?
>>
>>584064760
Also, what about piloting in Russia? I'm aware they have a pilot shortage but not a first officer shortage

Is the job market less tight there?
>>
>>584065630
captain shortage*
>>
>>584065621
Used to quite a bit. Not any more.
>>
>>584062075
What is your opinion about chemtrails?
>>
>>584065625
Yup basically france is the biggest issue. They still speak it a little bit in spain and italy (mainly just VFR traffic though) but in france its the most common among the big planes.
>>
>>584062075
what do you think of the Macadamia queen fiasco?
>>
>>584066032
topkek.
>>
>>584066085

Well they're still working on SERA C so maybe the UE will make us switch too.

Couldn't care less personnaly but it'll piss off the PPL "union" (namely the french aviation federation).
>>
>>584062075 I can't be a military/jet pilot because I wear glasses. So can I be an airline pilot with glasses or maybe do a laser surgery(I know you can't fly in the military if you do the surgery)?
>>
>>584067272
You can be commercial pilot with glasses provided your uncorrected vision is within a certain threshold. Go do a class 1 medical for civilian ops and find out.
>>
>>584067272

Depends on the country, I read somewhere that the US Navy actually paid for its fighter pilots' lasik, you might want to contact your country's service and ask.
>>
PPL, 170h, doing the CPL exams, half way through, gunna get my CPL & MECIR done by half way through next year amd will have around 250-300h.

How in the fuck do you get your first pilot job and what's the best way to progress to the airlines, say, within 5 years?
>>
>>584067496
And is it expensive to get a license? My family is not very wealthy and I know that learning flying is pretty expensive. Can you get like a scholarship or some sort of help?
>>
>>584062075
