To all of the anons that are like "Skyrim sucks", if we are only looking at '00s and '10s games let's put it like this (because you're probably guys in early twenties who's first RPG experience was Oblivion and now you can't enjoy Skyrim enough because it doesn't have that nostalgic feeling.)

Let's compare Skyrim to Witcher.
In Skyrim you can play as whatever you like, you have thousands of NPCs to talk to and way more to kill. Those kind of numbers make it hard to have a good story driven game because you can't create a story behind death of every random bandit, every random encounter with Khajit caravans on the road, Nord prisoner escorted by the legion or tavern brawl.
In a game like Witcher where those numbers are way lower there's more space for this and you also play as a premade character that already has quite a lot of character traits decided before you even start the game so... you get the idea.
If you have like 100 friendly NPCs you can make a great interaction with each one of them but when those numbers are well over thousand it can get quite hard to do so.

In the end, TES games might be shallow but they're different kind of games compared to most other RPGs considering how much freedom they offer to the player. I can play run Skyrim whenever I want spend a few hours on it and drop it for like few months and say I had fun, but with most other RPGs I need to spend a lot of time in order to enjoy them considering how this is predominantely a story driven genre.

So, next time you're like "Why is my character standing here like an idiot not even changing his facial expression while he's becoming a leader of dark brotherhood", you should remember that not many games allow you to become the leader of the clan of assassins while at the same time giving you a chance to become a most feared thief, greatest mage, dragon slayer, nordic rebel or even a law abiding citizen that likes to go around the wild with axe in one and fireball in the other hand.

before skyrim was released i had multiple characters with different styles that I tried to max out before playing Oblivions main quest.
Even now with skyrim I have about 150+ hours on my character and I haven't even played the main quest yet or the dlc.
I can't even imagine how many hours id put in if i had it for PC...I don't think my social life would exist

With oblivion the problem wasn't the story, it was the broken leveling system. The best character I ever made in that game was a mage that used all warrior skills so he couldn't level up, and I was able to play throguh the whole story that way. Most of the character builds in that game are not viable at all unless you cheat or mod, and every time you leveled up a non-combat skill you were basically making yourself weaker unless it brought something game changing to the table. Oblivion is easily the worst of the elder scrolls game. It was still fun, and I get why it was popular on consoles, but I'd never install it again now that skyrim is out.
