Haven't seen one of these in a while
ITT: Your rig specs

Mine:
>CPU: i5-4440 Quad core 3.3 Ghz
>GPU: R9 270x 2Gb
>RAM: Corsair 8 Gb DDR3
>HDD: 1 TB, forgot the manufacturer, 7200 RPM
>PSU: Corsair 600W
>Fans: Coolmaster 212
>Case: Dell XPS 8700
> OS: Windows 7

Peripherals:
>Big ass 30" TV (1080p) as a monitor
>Old keyboard and mouse from like the late 90's. Stil amazing, feels very solid.

Cost was easily under 800$.
Runs almost all modern games very well. Overall very satisfied with it.

Don't see any potential upgrades in the future.

Haswell i5's should be good with gaming for quite some time, until more than 4 cores becomes a requirement. But r9 270 has a beast price to performance ratio, I wouldn't bother upgrading. I have virtually the same but a refresh 4460 instead.

Planning on buying a new machine this winter, pick up some good shit on the Steam sale.

Anyone care to comment on this build?

>Pentium G3258 (overlocking this one obviously)
>Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
>MSI Z97-G45 mobo
>G.Skill Ares 2x 4GB DDR3 1600

>Sapphire R9 280X 3GB Vapor-X

>Total: about $850 USD

Especially the CPU and graphics card are with budget considerations in mind. I'm planning on upgrading those to something rather more high end after about 1 year. Gives me a little time to save up.

i use the 280x ver of that graphics card what a fucking cool beast it is!!

wow u pretty much got nearly same specs as me only mine's literally one number better here and there (eg - i5 4670k, 16gb ram, 3x 1tb drives with one 7200rpm, 1000w silverstone PSU) except for the TV for a monitor, i use a 22in and sometimes plug in my nearby wall mounted 50in and 5.1 surround sound system via optical digital output.

its like we're similar minded brothers only i'm slightly richer.

Originally built this in 2007 when I was big into PC gaming. Over the years only ram and GPU upgraded. Added a second moniter (Two Dell 24" IPS LEDs).

Don't game on PC anymore, so stopped caring. Pretty much only use it for browsing the web and pirating media.

I started with a 5770 on my x58, at the moment i have a 560ti.
The Nvidia was quieter because it has 2 large fans instead of a single small one and better fan management software.
The sapphire r9 290 has 3 with reviews saying it is quiet. Nvidia has better compute ability but so far i havent used it for its video encoding as it tends to produce shit quality encodes.

i was genuinely interested, have to build a pc for a friend and an fx 6300 with a 270x would just be perfect given the price, but i've never tried amd cpus so i asked.
Also because i've read the fx 6300 is slighly better than a q9400, which i own and which kinda struggles with bf4 (while other games more gpu dependant are fine)

Interesting. I'm curious how that board responds to SLI, as a lot of my friends (and myself) have noticed wonky power delivery on certain Z97 boards.

Case in point, My MSI Gaming 5 sometimes forgets to send power to the USB ports when running a high Overclock.

Yeah its good budget stuff. My FX8350 got me through quite a bit. Only reason I switched to a 4790k is Micro center was offering unreal deals for that and a Mobo combo, and I wanted to Crossfire 2 290X's before I went 4K and knew I'd be doing so long before Jim Keller's new miracle architecture was released to save AMD.

Just remember you have unreal OC'ing headroom with that thing if you ever need more power. Most on overclock.net are running 4.7-5.0 with mundane cooling.

Anyone mind giving me a bit of advice?

I build a really nice PC about 2 years ago, its just now getting to the point where I have to play a game on high (watchdogs was first, now its the same with shadow of mordor) to keep a 60+fps average.

I think I'm going to do a GPU upgrade when I can only play new games on medium. When I do, should I SLI my current card or get a new one?

This was my first build so this is why I'm asking. My card is a gtx 670

the budget was 450 € so even getting a decent mobo and an after market cooler was a problem, and with those extra money i could have gotten a 8320 and keeping it stock (not sure it would be better than an OC'd fx 6300 though, just guessing)
