While i respect what you are saying, i have to say that the majority of people who didnt get the atar they want, and spoke of grandiose ideas such as gap years and returning as a mature age student and such never eventuate. If they dont have the discipline to get a good atar, they very rarely have the discipline or means to return to the course they had lofty dreams of completing after wasting a year(s) bludging around. Its unfortunate how much the atar can really shape ones life. In saying that many people go on to find other things they enjoy and forget about their atar pretty quickly, which i can appreciate the merit when they say it.
