depends on how you look at it. in taipei, most schools will pay around $20 an hour for each hour taught. that usually doesn't include any time that you are grading homework, meetings, etc. i was making about 1,100 usd a month. not great pay, but it is about 3x the average taiwanese salary, so you can feel like it is a lot of money.
to put it another way, i took my first years pay and financed a month long trip in thailand, 1 week in vietnam, and a 2 week trip in china, and still brought back around 5k when i moved home.
it was a nice first job after college.

I think Rosetta stone is great though, a friend of mine pirated the Chinese module and was able to travel to China and survive solo after two months of really intensive lessons.

He can't read or write either but he can recognize simple characters.

i was able to small talk about work, family, ask for directions in a year. i studied in taipei, though. immersion is really the best way to learn, if you can afford it.
the foreigners i met who were generally conversational had studied 4 years in college.
if you are planning on learning by yourself, my only advice would be to find an online resource to practice with, or find asian people to chat with as friends.

rosetta stone for chinese is a great tool, but you really should have another resource to learn the grammar. mandarin grammar is actually very simple and once you figure out a few the the concepts, its quite easy to use and understand.
so, if you do the rosetta stone route, you should also be using supplementary resources that break down the grammar rules (like past tense) so you don't awkwardly have to guess when it it introduced in rosetta stone.
